- [00:00:25.440]Ah,the sweet sound of parenting: laughter, giggles, and… whining.
- [00:00:31.560]Yes, whining.
- [00:00:33.000]That nails-on-a-chalkboard sound that can turn
- [00:00:35.140]even the calmest parent into a human volcano.
- [00:00:38.640]But before you grab the earplugs, let me tell you something
- [00:00:42.640]whining isn’t just a kid’s way of testing your sanity.
- [00:00:45.740]It’s actually their way of saying, “Help me, Mom! Dad!
- [00:00:48.840]I’m overwhelmed, or tired, or maybe just
- [00:00:52.220]really, really need that cookie at the checkout!”
- [00:00:55.240][Sound effect of a kid whining]
- [00:00:58.260]Sound familiar? Of course it does.
- [00:01:00.520]Here’s the deal: kids whine because they don’t yet have
- [00:01:03.380]the vocabulary or skills to express themselves.
- [00:01:05.840]It’s not personal.
- [00:01:07.580]Okay, maybe it’s a little personal when it’s in the
- [00:01:10.091]middle of a crowded store - but stay with me.
- [00:01:12.860]So how do you deal with the whining without losing your cool?
- [00:01:17.228]First, figure out why they’re whining.
- [00:01:19.528]Are they tired? Hungry? Bored? A combination of all three?
- [00:01:24.100]Trust me, prevention is your best friend here.
- [00:01:26.980]Run errands after nap time.
- [00:01:29.080]Pack snacks like you’re going on a cross-country road trip.
- [00:01:32.440]And always have an emergency "fun stash" ready that can include
- [00:01:35.780]crayons, puzzles, or a tiny toy just for these moments.
- [00:01:40.240][Sound effect of a zipper opening, followed by a child's cheerful "Whoa"]
- [00:01:44.200]Now here’s the magic trick: teach your child to use their words.
- [00:01:49.280]If little Susie is whining for milk, don’t just hand it over.
- [00:01:52.760]Say,“You can ask, ‘Mommy, milk please.’”
- [00:01:56.060]And when she does, throw her a mini party:
- [00:01:58.620]“Of course, here’s your milk!
- [00:02:00.580]Thanks for using your words!”
- [00:02:02.500]Want to make it fun?
- [00:02:04.240]Play a little game at home.
- [00:02:05.600]Grab a stop sign with “STOP” on one side and “GO” on the other.
- [00:02:09.640]Take turns asking for toys in different voices
- [00:02:12.336]- whiny, yelling, whispering, or just plain talking.
- [00:02:16.983]When your kid uses their “talking voice,”
- [00:02:19.700]cheer like they’ve just won an Olympic medal.
- [00:02:22.240]Who knows, you might even get a kiss as a bonus prize.
- [00:02:26.140][Sound effect of a kiss, followed by laughter.]
- [00:02:28.360]And if you’re wondering how this works at school
- [00:02:30.700]- teachers do the same thing!
- [00:02:33.060]They remind kids to use their words.
- [00:02:35.620][Upbeat music swells.] I don’t understand you when you whine,”
- [00:02:39.620]“but I’ll help when you ask with words.”
- [00:02:42.320]Teachers even model it: “You sound hungry.
- [00:02:45.320]You can say, ‘More crackers please.’”
- [00:02:48.040]And just like that - problem solved.
- [00:02:50.200]So, next time your kid starts that whine, remember
- [00:02:52.641]- they’re not trying to drive you crazy.
- [00:02:55.158]They just need a little help figuring out
- [00:02:57.429]how to ask for what they need.
- [00:02:58.978]Teach them, encourage them, and - above all
- [00:03:01.580]- don’t give in to the checkout counter whine.
- [00:03:04.020]Unless, of course, you really need that candy bar too.
- [00:03:07.960]You’ve got this, parents!
- [00:03:09.220]Now go out there and tackle that whine
- [00:03:11.641]- one “please” at a time.
- [00:03:13.560]Thanks for tuning in to Big Emotions of Little Ones
- [00:03:16.700]- because growing up is big work, and you’re doing a great job!
- [00:03:20.460]See you next time!"
