- [00:00:00.000]- Nebraska Extension is working
- [00:00:02.000]to prepare
- [00:00:02.560]the next generation of
- [00:00:03.810]agriculture.
- [00:00:04.760]A new campaign is focused on
- [00:00:06.380]the state's 4-H members,
- [00:00:07.880]connecting young people to
- [00:00:09.270]hands-on,
- [00:00:10.080]real-world learning experiences.
- [00:00:12.680]Dr. Kathleen Lodl joins us now
- [00:00:14.560]with a closer look.
- [00:00:15.840]So good to have you with us
- [00:00:16.990]today.
- [00:00:17.480]So what is the inspiration
- [00:00:18.910]behind this campaign?
- [00:00:20.300]- Well, Tammy, it's so good to
- [00:00:22.470]be here
- [00:00:22.760]and share about what's
- [00:00:23.600]happening in Nebraska 4-H.
- [00:00:25.640]You know, we've always been
- [00:00:27.180]focused
- [00:00:27.600]on helping create the next
- [00:00:28.900]generation of leaders
- [00:00:30.000]and the next generation of
- [00:00:31.860]young people.
- [00:00:32.820]But right now, we're really
- [00:00:34.500]focusing,
- [00:00:35.160]helping those young people not
- [00:00:36.940]only be ready,
- [00:00:37.840]but beyond ready, ready to
- [00:00:39.870]serve, ready to lead,
- [00:00:41.720]and really prepared to face the
- [00:00:43.800]challenges
- [00:00:44.640]that are coming ahead in
- [00:00:45.890]agriculture and embrace those.
- [00:00:48.360]- I love that, beyond ready,
- [00:00:50.400]that's very powerful.
- [00:00:51.600]So how does 4-H help make that
- [00:00:53.620]vision a reality?
- [00:00:54.900]- You know, as part of the Land-Grant
- [00:00:57.400]University system across the
- [00:00:59.020]country,
- [00:00:59.640]4-H draws upon the research and
- [00:01:02.010]the knowledge
- [00:01:02.720]of all aspects of that Land-Grant
- [00:01:04.690]system
- [00:01:05.160]and translates those into hands-on
- [00:01:08.180]learning experiences
- [00:01:09.780]where young people can get an
- [00:01:11.460]idea
- [00:01:11.780]of what it means to do the
- [00:01:13.890]science
- [00:01:14.660]behind where our food comes
- [00:01:16.350]from,
- [00:01:16.680]to practice the technologies
- [00:01:18.780]and the decision-making
- [00:01:20.200]processes
- [00:01:20.860]that really prepare them to
- [00:01:22.230]answer
- [00:01:22.620]some of those challenging
- [00:01:24.210]questions.
- [00:01:25.120]At the same time, what we do,
- [00:01:27.200]is help those young people
- [00:01:28.660]develop
- [00:01:29.060]the kinds of life skills they're
- [00:01:30.530]going to need,
- [00:01:31.160]communication skills, decision-making
- [00:01:33.750]skills,
- [00:01:34.340]standing up in front of a group,
- [00:01:36.200]trying out ideas,
- [00:01:37.820]that passion to learn, that
- [00:01:39.520]passion to grow,
- [00:01:40.800]all through your 4-H program.
- [00:01:43.380]- And that's, I was gonna say,
- [00:01:44.660]you've actually got some strong
- [00:01:46.230]data
- [00:01:46.500]and research behind this, don't
- [00:01:48.640]you?
- [00:01:49.280]- Absolutely.
- [00:01:50.460]Through a longitudinal study by
- [00:01:52.180]Tufts University,
- [00:01:53.420]we know that the young people
- [00:01:54.780]engaged in 4-H
- [00:01:56.060]are more likely to participate
- [00:01:57.000]in 4-H.
- [00:01:57.000]They're more likely to pursue
- [00:01:58.640]careers in STEM,
- [00:01:59.460]help make healthy decisions for
- [00:02:01.670]their futures,
- [00:02:02.440]and also seem to have more
- [00:02:03.750]purpose in life,
- [00:02:04.640]and we're pretty proud of that.
- [00:02:06.800]- Absolutely.
- [00:02:07.720]So what role can the public or
- [00:02:09.900]other partners play
- [00:02:11.020]in supporting this effort?
- [00:02:12.960]- You know, Tammy, there's a
- [00:02:14.300]role for all of us.
- [00:02:15.080]From those who want to
- [00:02:16.210]volunteer to help with programs,
- [00:02:18.320]from parents to those who are
- [00:02:20.180]experts
- [00:02:20.760]and want to be leaders of clubs
- [00:02:22.720]or additional programming,
- [00:02:24.020]it's all possible.
- [00:02:25.300]And you can find out more about
- [00:02:26.800]those opportunities
- [00:02:26.800]locally by checking the website,
- [00:02:29.550]4h.unl.edu.
- [00:02:32.040]- I've always said, I think 4-H
- [00:02:33.500]played a role
- [00:02:34.140]in what I do today.
- [00:02:35.540]I was a 4-H kid.
- [00:02:37.140]That's Dr. Kathleen Lodle with
- [00:02:38.630]Nebraska Extension.
- [00:02:39.680]Thank you so much for joining
- [00:02:40.980]us.
