- [00:00:00.000]As an
- [00:00:06.090]Assistant Professor of Sports
- [00:00:08.130]Media and Communications for
- [00:00:10.110]the
- [00:00:10.300]University of Nebraska-Lincoln's
- [00:00:11.730]College of Journalism and Mass
- [00:00:12.960]Communications,
- [00:00:13.860]Brian helps to develop the next
- [00:00:15.500]generation of sports broadcasters.
- [00:00:17.640]But important to all of us
- [00:00:19.620]today, Brian has studied
- [00:00:20.950]challenges presented by legalized
- [00:00:22.770]sports betting and the media,
- [00:00:24.300]where he's had his findings
- [00:00:25.700]published and presented. I've
- [00:00:27.500]been fortunate enough to visit
- [00:00:28.980]his classrooms, and now I kind
- [00:00:30.550]of wish I could get a degree
- [00:00:31.870]through the J-School at UNL.
- [00:00:33.520]Brian's insights and data
- [00:00:35.080]regarding sports betting and
- [00:00:36.860]the media are extremely
- [00:00:38.260]valuable,
- [00:00:38.940]and I look forward to hearing
- [00:00:40.080]more about it today. And with
- [00:00:41.480]that, I turn it over to Brian.
- [00:00:42.740]All right, Mike, thank you so
- [00:00:45.710]much. I will share my screen
- [00:00:48.570]here and get rolling.
- [00:00:52.220]How is that looking to everyone?
- [00:00:54.970]Good? Good enough? Okay, good
- [00:00:57.830]enough.
- [00:00:58.980]Sometimes good enough is good
- [00:01:00.420]enough. Okay, so I'm going to
- [00:01:03.140]talk about responsible,
- [00:01:04.360]specifically sports gambling,
- [00:01:06.420]as Mike noted. My background is
- [00:01:08.460]in sports, and that's what I
- [00:01:10.480]teach
- [00:01:10.760]at UNL. And so, this will let
- [00:01:14.700]me advance. There we go. So
- [00:01:18.980]this is a very brief overview
- [00:01:22.280]of what
- [00:01:23.360]I'll be doing here. So I'm
- [00:01:24.430]going to talk about why sports,
- [00:01:25.810]why sports betting, why sports
- [00:01:27.040]gambling,
- [00:01:27.520]and why in the classroom.
- [00:01:28.980]I'll tell you a little bit
- [00:01:30.170]about me, which also dovetails
- [00:01:31.990]in with how I got here,
- [00:01:33.140]some theoretical influences
- [00:01:35.290]that I've kind of dug up
- [00:01:36.890]through my research into sports
- [00:01:39.370]betting,
- [00:01:39.520]and how that informs what I do
- [00:01:40.960]in the classroom. And I'll take
- [00:01:42.640]you through a dedicated class
- [00:01:44.140]that
- [00:01:44.420]I've had the opportunity to
- [00:01:45.930]teach twice now, and that's
- [00:01:47.400]sports betting and the media.
- [00:01:49.220]Some really interesting
- [00:01:50.510]insights out of that, which I'll
- [00:01:52.270]get into later.
- [00:01:53.200]And then I'll talk about also
- [00:01:54.690]integrating this topic into
- [00:01:56.190]existing classes that are not
- [00:01:58.040]sports
- [00:01:58.440]betting.
- [00:01:58.980]Specific. And then at the end,
- [00:02:02.080]again, I'll share a little bit
- [00:02:03.330]of data. At the end of the
- [00:02:05.700]semester,
- [00:02:06.080]I have administered a very
- [00:02:07.670]brief survey, and it's revealed
- [00:02:09.670]some pretty interesting
- [00:02:11.260]statistics from the students
- [00:02:13.130]that have taken this class. So
- [00:02:15.140]I will talk about that. And
- [00:02:16.930]then also,
- [00:02:17.380]of course, welcome your
- [00:02:18.980]comments and questions. Always
- [00:02:20.970]looking to improve this class
- [00:02:22.780]and think
- [00:02:23.440]of new ways to engage the
- [00:02:24.840]students. So we'll get into
- [00:02:26.590]that too. But first,
- [00:02:28.980]sports betting. Three main
- [00:02:30.220]reasons. First of all, it's
- [00:02:32.200]kind of the shiny new thing
- [00:02:33.890]when it comes to
- [00:02:34.660]gambling. As some of our
- [00:02:35.910]panelists have mentioned
- [00:02:37.180]already, in 2018, the Supreme
- [00:02:39.180]Court struck down
- [00:02:40.160]the federal ban on sports
- [00:02:41.640]betting. So now, since that
- [00:02:43.300]time, 38 states have joined
- [00:02:45.170]Nevada
- [00:02:45.680]in legalizing some form of
- [00:02:47.730]sports betting. Most places,
- [00:02:50.180]that includes online. Here in
- [00:02:52.760]Nebraska,
- [00:02:53.860]it's in-person only. Regardless,
- [00:02:56.910]we're talking about,
- [00:02:58.980]industry that has generated $150
- [00:03:01.780]billion wagered legally each
- [00:03:03.800]year on sports. So very much a
- [00:03:05.920]shiny
- [00:03:06.140]new thing, and it's kind of
- [00:03:07.520]everywhere. Along with this,
- [00:03:09.210]though, with the legal market,
- [00:03:10.980]there
- [00:03:11.260]is a rampant emergent of what
- [00:03:12.830]we call gray markets. So that
- [00:03:14.530]includes daily fantasy,
- [00:03:16.060]things like prize picks and
- [00:03:18.000]underdog, which are not categorized
- [00:03:20.690]as sports betting and
- [00:03:22.280]not regulated in the same way.
- [00:03:24.230]Similarly, sweepstakes apps
- [00:03:25.860]like Fliff. That one's really
- [00:03:28.840]interesting and one that a lot
- [00:03:30.510]of students are using. And then
- [00:03:32.370]the new one on the block is the
- [00:03:34.000]prediction markets,
- [00:03:35.440]specifically a company called Kalshi,
- [00:03:37.810]which garnered some press and
- [00:03:42.260]attention
- [00:03:42.640]in November when they started
- [00:03:45.320]to take bets on the election,
- [00:03:47.990]on the actual election in the
- [00:03:50.500]United
- [00:03:50.760]States. And they had the green
- [00:03:53.900]light to do so from a
- [00:03:55.110]regulatory standpoint. And they
- [00:03:58.150]got a lot of
- [00:03:58.700]it, but about a 61% to win the
- [00:04:00.630]election, whereas most of the
- [00:04:02.280]polls had it about 50-50. And
- [00:04:04.500]so Kalshi
- [00:04:05.080]is now touting itself as this
- [00:04:07.720]new beacon of truth and a
- [00:04:09.980]greater source of truth than
- [00:04:12.560]polls. But
- [00:04:13.900]they've recently started to
- [00:04:15.760]offer predictions on the
- [00:04:17.390]outcomes of sporting events.
- [00:04:19.480]And again,
- [00:04:20.360]this is not regulated as sports
- [00:04:21.860]betting, and it's available to
- [00:04:23.410]those who are under the age of
- [00:04:24.780]21.
- [00:04:25.440]And then the final one,
- [00:04:28.560]which has been touched on, I
- [00:04:29.730]think, a little bit in some of
- [00:04:30.860]our other presentations,
- [00:04:32.080]including the previous one with
- [00:04:34.510]Matt. It's the I know sports
- [00:04:36.610]approach towards this form of
- [00:04:39.040]gambling. It's familiarity. We've
- [00:04:41.120]played it. We played Little
- [00:04:42.660]League. We played soccer. We
- [00:04:45.050]played
- [00:04:45.720]other sports, maybe up through
- [00:04:46.990]high school, perhaps even into
- [00:04:48.220]college. So we think that we
- [00:04:49.380]know sports. We also watch a
- [00:04:51.510]lot of sports on TV, sports
- [00:04:53.640]programming. We're on our apps
- [00:04:55.880]and online
- [00:04:58.420]media. We watch a lot of media
- [00:04:59.750]around sports. So we think that
- [00:05:01.180]we're experts. And so that, as
- [00:05:03.060]I say,
- [00:05:03.420]it seduces us. It seduces us as
- [00:05:04.930]bettors into believing that we're
- [00:05:06.580]going to be successful
- [00:05:07.860]on betting on game outcomes,
- [00:05:09.730]quote, because we know sports.
- [00:05:11.890]So that's three reasons why
- [00:05:13.660]I'm drawn to this topic and
- [00:05:16.200]what I try to address in the
- [00:05:18.650]class. So first of all, a
- [00:05:21.200]little bit about
- [00:05:21.740]me. My background is in sports
- [00:05:23.550]media. I spent eight years
- [00:05:25.230]doing play-by-play in minor
- [00:05:26.770]league baseball.
- [00:05:28.420]Another seven years as a sports
- [00:05:30.290]information director and broadcaster
- [00:05:32.390]in college sports.
- [00:05:33.580]So I've seen the professional
- [00:05:34.840]side. I've seen the amateur
- [00:05:36.080]side. And in 15 years of
- [00:05:38.460]covering sports,
- [00:05:39.900]not once did I publicly discuss
- [00:05:42.130]sports betting. All of my
- [00:05:44.100]experience was prior to 2018,
- [00:05:47.100]I should note. So it was
- [00:05:48.790]something that we did not talk
- [00:05:50.840]about. Now, everybody talks
- [00:05:53.680]about it
- [00:05:54.220]on every station. And that's
- [00:05:56.170]kind of fascinating to me.
- [00:05:58.280]My only real brush with
- [00:06:00.600]gambling that I saw in person
- [00:06:03.650]was 2005. I was working for the
- [00:06:08.260]minor
- [00:06:08.440]league baseball team in Vero
- [00:06:09.680]Beach, Florida. That's also at
- [00:06:11.170]the time where the Dodgers were
- [00:06:12.600]holding their spring training.
- [00:06:14.450]So during spring training, I
- [00:06:16.020]worked with the Dodgers
- [00:06:17.280]publicity
- [00:06:17.940]office. And so that granted me
- [00:06:19.470]access pretty much everywhere.
- [00:06:21.020]And hey, what's going on during
- [00:06:22.620]March
- [00:06:23.080]in the United States? It's
- [00:06:24.450]March Madness, the basketball
- [00:06:26.000]tournaments. Everybody feels
- [00:06:28.140]out their brackets, right? So I'm
- [00:06:30.620]in the Dodgers locker room, and
- [00:06:32.780]I'm seeing more cash with my
- [00:06:35.080]own
- [00:06:35.340]eyes than I've ever seen in my
- [00:06:37.910]entire life being traded on the
- [00:06:40.710]NCAA tournament and the
- [00:06:43.030]brackets
- [00:06:43.340]that they had going on here.
- [00:06:44.450]And it blew my mind. And I
- [00:06:45.460]couldn't believe this was going
- [00:06:46.600]on
- [00:06:46.760]in a major league baseball
- [00:06:49.010]locker room. So it's been
- [00:06:50.430]around even before the legalization.
- [00:06:53.340]A little bit about my education.
- [00:06:55.720]I earned my bachelor's at KU.
- [00:06:58.000]My master's from Oklahoma State
- [00:06:59.670]and my PhD from University of
- [00:07:01.150]Oklahoma. Now I teach at
- [00:07:02.900]Nebraska.
- [00:07:03.320]So as I like to joke, I'm
- [00:07:04.210]trying to bring back the Big
- [00:07:05.240]Eight Conference. So we're
- [00:07:06.390]going to have
- [00:07:06.920]all this conference realignment.
- [00:07:08.630]Let's go back to the good old
- [00:07:09.880]days. A little bit more
- [00:07:12.280]specifically
- [00:07:12.700]about how that education has
- [00:07:14.440]directed my career path and my
- [00:07:16.260]research interests. So in
- [00:07:18.040]August of
- [00:07:18.640]2016, I start my master's
- [00:07:20.780]program in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
- [00:07:23.060]And I had to come up with a
- [00:07:24.460]topic for a
- [00:07:27.860]class. It was a research theory
- [00:07:29.850]class. And so I needed a topic.
- [00:07:31.850]Well, about this time,
- [00:07:33.360]picture in the bottom right-hand
- [00:07:34.990]corner there, that's me with a
- [00:07:36.510]couple of my friends who
- [00:07:37.800]started
- [00:07:38.160]our first fantasy football
- [00:07:39.680]league in 1994 when we were all
- [00:07:41.810]freshmen in college. And this
- [00:07:44.580]September
- [00:07:45.480]will be the 31st anniversary of
- [00:07:47.480]our league. We've kept it
- [00:07:49.060]intact for 31 years. We have
- [00:07:51.630]never played
- [00:07:52.740]for money. We never will. But
- [00:07:55.460]it's been a social glue. We've
- [00:07:57.720]never played for money. We've
- [00:07:57.720]never
- [00:07:57.720]that gentleman on the right is
- [00:07:59.770]Colonel Strack, who spent 20
- [00:08:02.160]years in the Marines. He once
- [00:08:05.440]famously
- [00:08:06.180]got online for a fantasy
- [00:08:08.260]football draft in the wee hours
- [00:08:10.840]of the morning from Africa
- [00:08:13.100]while he was stationed abroad.
- [00:08:16.260]That's how seriously we took
- [00:08:18.820]the draft. But it's kept us
- [00:08:21.460]intact for all
- [00:08:22.060]of these years. But I thought
- [00:08:23.620]this was really kind of a
- [00:08:24.810]fascinating thing. And as it
- [00:08:26.390]turned out,
- [00:08:27.580]there was some research on
- [00:08:28.750]fantasy sports in the United
- [00:08:30.030]States. And I thought, wow, we
- [00:08:31.760]can do this
- [00:08:33.000]for our career. This is a
- [00:08:34.760]research path. And so it's
- [00:08:36.680]turned into a fruitful area for
- [00:08:38.760]me. And that
- [00:08:39.600]leads to some things that I've
- [00:08:41.660]researched. And again, this all
- [00:08:44.170]ties into how I construct the
- [00:08:46.160]class and why. So these
- [00:08:47.660]theoretical influences. Out of
- [00:08:49.340]my master's program, the timing
- [00:08:51.480]was
- [00:08:51.780]immaculate. So I started in
- [00:08:53.680]2016, 2018. May of 2018 is
- [00:08:57.440]when the Supreme Court decision
- [00:08:59.130]came down that snuffed out the
- [00:09:00.690]federal ban on sports betting.
- [00:09:02.540]And so within a few weeks of
- [00:09:04.540]that decision, I gathered a
- [00:09:06.550]series of focus groups of
- [00:09:08.680]people who
- [00:09:09.760]had played fantasy sports and
- [00:09:11.800]tried to get their takes on
- [00:09:13.590]what does this mean now that
- [00:09:15.480]sports
- [00:09:16.080]betting is going to be legalized
- [00:09:17.750]in a lot of places. So it kind
- [00:09:19.300]of came at it from a social
- [00:09:20.740]cognitive theory perspective,
- [00:09:22.640]which is very, very big on
- [00:09:24.110]observational learning. So we
- [00:09:25.990]learn from
- [00:09:27.300]our family. And yes, we learn
- [00:09:29.910]from media. And so that was the
- [00:09:31.900]angle that I took on that one.
- [00:09:33.780]My dissertation for my Ph.D.
- [00:09:36.660]program was this one. And it
- [00:09:39.280]was looking at framing and sourcing
- [00:09:42.020]of the legalization of sports
- [00:09:43.770]betting in the U.S. So when
- [00:09:45.590]looking at how is sports
- [00:09:46.990]betting covered
- [00:09:48.040]from 1992, when the federal ban
- [00:09:50.840]on sports betting was
- [00:09:52.280]implemented, to 2018, when the
- [00:09:55.160]Supreme Court
- [00:09:56.180]decision came down. And so that
- [00:09:57.160]was the angle that I took on
- [00:09:57.160]that one. And so that was the
- [00:09:57.160]angle that
- [00:09:57.160]I took on. And the change in
- [00:09:59.320]tone was extraordinary. In the
- [00:10:01.640]early 90s, it was all about we
- [00:10:03.740]need to
- [00:10:03.980]protect our children. We can't
- [00:10:06.120]have our athletes being seen as
- [00:10:08.180]poker chips. We must protect
- [00:10:10.600]the
- [00:10:10.960]integrity of the games. We can't
- [00:10:12.580]have game outcomes being
- [00:10:13.860]questioned. And that will
- [00:10:15.080]happen
- [00:10:15.500]if we have widespread legalized
- [00:10:17.050]sports betting. Well, what
- [00:10:18.720]happened by 2018 is that the
- [00:10:20.370]tone had
- [00:10:20.840]almost completely flipped.
- [00:10:22.240]Those concerns were no longer
- [00:10:23.570]at the forefront. What was
- [00:10:24.840]being reported
- [00:10:27.020]by the Supreme Court was, you
- [00:10:27.770]know, this is going to create
- [00:10:28.520]jobs. This is going to create
- [00:10:29.400]needed tax
- [00:10:30.200]dollars for states that are
- [00:10:32.380]starving in their budgets. It
- [00:10:35.120]was described by one congressman
- [00:10:37.640]as
- [00:10:38.160]a tax that people line up to
- [00:10:39.700]pay. So people have smiles on
- [00:10:41.520]their faces. They're placing
- [00:10:43.410]their bets
- [00:10:44.060]and paying taxes. And so it's
- [00:10:45.980]rather attractive to both sides
- [00:10:47.990]of the aisle. You know, we seem
- [00:10:50.140]to
- [00:10:50.260]be in a political climate where
- [00:10:51.630]we can't agree on much of
- [00:10:53.020]anything. But remarkably, legalization
- [00:10:55.280]of
- [00:10:56.880]all sides, we're pretty happy
- [00:10:59.020]to take on. And so that
- [00:11:00.660]certainly has an impact on how
- [00:11:02.840]we view sports
- [00:11:04.160]betting when our primary media
- [00:11:05.630]outlets are framing it in a
- [00:11:06.880]very different manner. A couple
- [00:11:09.030]of other
- [00:11:09.520]studies that are kind of
- [00:11:10.620]ongoing. One that I'm starting
- [00:11:12.150]now is specific to college
- [00:11:13.360]students and
- [00:11:14.280]responsible gambling messaging.
- [00:11:16.560]We're doing an online
- [00:11:17.860]experiment to test a few things
- [00:11:19.830]there.
- [00:11:20.420]Responsible gambling in ESPN
- [00:11:23.190]betting shows. So this one,
- [00:11:26.740]a colleague and I went through
- [00:11:29.500]45 episodes of ESPN's dedicated
- [00:11:32.680]sports betting program called
- [00:11:34.140]ESPN Bet Live. And we developed
- [00:11:36.130]a typology of the responsible
- [00:11:37.910]gambling language that's used.
- [00:11:40.100]And it's very heavy on
- [00:11:41.540]responsible gambling, not on
- [00:11:43.640]problem gambling or gambling
- [00:11:45.670]disorder. In fact,
- [00:11:47.220]there was virtually no mention
- [00:11:49.050]of gambling disorder whatsoever.
- [00:11:51.280]So we found some ways
- [00:11:53.720]that they are maybe trying to
- [00:11:55.230]be or present gambling in a
- [00:11:56.600]responsible way. But there is
- [00:11:58.430]certainly extraordinary room
- [00:12:00.480]for growth in that area.
- [00:12:02.420]And then one other kind of fun
- [00:12:04.160]one we did was looking at
- [00:12:05.600]social media responses to a
- [00:12:07.350]couple of
- [00:12:07.860]large and high profile suspensions
- [00:12:10.260]due to betting. So Calvin Ridley,
- [00:12:12.780]an NFL All-Pro wide receiver,
- [00:12:14.960]was suspended for a year. Ivan
- [00:12:16.580]Toney, who was referenced in
- [00:12:18.080]the last
- [00:12:18.560]presentation over in the UK, he
- [00:12:21.270]was suspended for eight months.
- [00:12:24.360]And so we got to look at
- [00:12:26.070]responses
- [00:12:26.460]between the US, where sports
- [00:12:28.150]betting is relatively new as a
- [00:12:29.850]legal entity, and the UK, where
- [00:12:32.200]it's been
- [00:12:32.500]legal for decades, and also
- [00:12:34.870]athlete mental health. So
- [00:12:37.060]Calvin Ridley was expressed
- [00:12:39.330]that he was dealing
- [00:12:40.540]with very deep depression at
- [00:12:42.170]the time that he placed his
- [00:12:43.650]bets. Ivan Toney confessed to a
- [00:12:45.690]gambling
- [00:12:45.980]addiction. So two kind of
- [00:12:47.880]different types of mental
- [00:12:49.870]health issues there. But all of
- [00:12:52.020]these things kind
- [00:12:56.320]of play into the sports betting
- [00:12:57.530]and the sports betting in the
- [00:12:58.650]media class.
- [00:12:59.160]You see a lot of activity here
- [00:13:02.180]on this page. Again, ESPN has
- [00:13:05.570]its own sports book now.
- [00:13:08.240]The Better Collective there on
- [00:13:10.320]the left-hand side of the page,
- [00:13:12.320]that's a media company that has
- [00:13:14.580]several different entities
- [00:13:16.320]underneath it that are betting-focused
- [00:13:18.780]or gambling-focused in terms of
- [00:13:21.120]content. VEASAN up there in the
- [00:13:22.940]top right-hand corner, the Musburger's,
- [00:13:25.360]started this week.
- [00:13:26.180]This one almost immediately
- [00:13:27.630]after the Supreme Court
- [00:13:28.830]decision came down. It's a 24-hour-a-day,
- [00:13:31.960]seven-day-a-week sports betting
- [00:13:34.510]programming. Some of it's live,
- [00:13:37.250]some of it's recorded,
- [00:13:39.080]but it was the first one fully
- [00:13:41.080]dedicated to sports betting
- [00:13:43.070]network. And then FanDuel TV,
- [00:13:45.480]FanDuel being one of the most,
- [00:13:47.730]or in fact, the most profitable
- [00:13:49.920]legal sports book in the
- [00:13:51.600]country.
- [00:13:52.540]They have the naming rights for
- [00:13:55.010]some sports betting. They have
- [00:13:55.640]the naming rights for some
- [00:13:56.060]sports betting.
- [00:13:56.160]Regional sports networks, but
- [00:13:57.910]they also have their own TV
- [00:13:59.330]network, which is mostly,
- [00:14:00.940]you can find it on their
- [00:14:02.190]website. That's the most
- [00:14:03.700]prominent place to see it,
- [00:14:05.300]but it is available on some
- [00:14:06.780]other streaming services. So
- [00:14:09.120]understanding this, what we
- [00:14:12.850]call
- [00:14:13.680]kind of the media ecology that
- [00:14:15.430]has embraced sports betting,
- [00:14:17.250]that's why we felt like there
- [00:14:18.960]was a need for this class. And
- [00:14:20.880]so we named it Sports Betting
- [00:14:22.670]and the Media. So it kind of
- [00:14:26.140]touches on three primary areas
- [00:14:28.130]this course does. One is just
- [00:14:30.360]to give that broad history of
- [00:14:33.070]gambling
- [00:14:33.400]in general, and then
- [00:14:34.310]specifically of sports betting
- [00:14:35.720]in the United States, basically
- [00:14:37.160]trying
- [00:14:37.560]to answer the question, where
- [00:14:39.260]have we been? How did we get to
- [00:14:41.000]where we are today? And why is
- [00:14:42.610]it
- [00:14:42.880]important? Number two is I want
- [00:14:44.580]to make sure the students
- [00:14:45.860]understand the definitions and
- [00:14:47.600]mechanics
- [00:14:47.980]of sports betting. So they need
- [00:14:50.330]to understand the basic
- [00:14:51.970]terminology of it. And then the
- [00:14:54.290]mechanics,
- [00:14:56.120]odds are calculated. What
- [00:14:58.260]happens when you bet a parlay?
- [00:15:00.680]Why is that riskier than it is
- [00:15:02.880]a straight money line bet?
- [00:15:04.580]Things like that. And then the
- [00:15:06.840]third one is contemporary
- [00:15:08.050]issues.
- [00:15:08.820]This business has been changing
- [00:15:11.580]so rapidly since the fall of PASPA
- [00:15:14.420]in 2018.
- [00:15:16.240]My courses looked almost
- [00:15:18.190]entirely different and they
- [00:15:20.430]were a year apart. So fall of
- [00:15:22.740]2023 versus
- [00:15:24.540]fall of 2024.
- [00:15:26.100]We were talking about very
- [00:15:27.280]different things in terms of
- [00:15:29.240]contemporary issues between
- [00:15:30.500]those two
- [00:15:30.960]classes. So I do try to keep it
- [00:15:32.370]nimble. Here's a look at a few
- [00:15:34.520]of the assignments. I'll get
- [00:15:36.720]into
- [00:15:36.880]some of the bigger ones a
- [00:15:38.420]little later. By far the least
- [00:15:40.580]popular is the midterm exam.
- [00:15:42.520]But I feel like
- [00:15:43.840]this one is important because
- [00:15:45.640]again, the terminology is very,
- [00:15:47.720]very important. Knowing some of
- [00:15:52.850]the
- [00:15:56.080]key elements of the midterm
- [00:15:56.480]exam is very, very important.
- [00:15:57.080]And so I need to make sure that
- [00:15:57.620]we're
- [00:15:57.840]all on more or less even ground
- [00:15:59.580]after the first four or five
- [00:16:01.260]weeks of the class before we
- [00:16:02.810]really
- [00:16:03.300]get in to the nitty gritty. And
- [00:16:05.640]so that's where we start with
- [00:16:07.730]the midterm exam. The first few
- [00:16:10.360]weeks
- [00:16:10.520]of the class maybe isn't
- [00:16:11.820]terribly exciting or what they
- [00:16:13.510]want to know, but it gives us a
- [00:16:15.130]baseline
- [00:16:15.740]because they do come in with
- [00:16:17.730]widely different understandings
- [00:16:20.260]and perspectives on what
- [00:16:22.090]gambling
- [00:16:22.840]and sports betting is. The
- [00:16:23.920]second one is a little more
- [00:16:24.940]complicated. It's a little bit
- [00:16:25.840]more
- [00:16:26.060]exciting. That's the scandal
- [00:16:27.950]presentations. So both semesters
- [00:16:30.130]I've taught the class have
- [00:16:31.740]had 30 students. So I divide
- [00:16:33.930]them into 15 pairs of two, and
- [00:16:36.180]then they get to get with their
- [00:16:38.140]partner
- [00:16:38.400]and draft from a list of, I
- [00:16:40.010]give them 18 to 20 prominent
- [00:16:42.200]sports betting scandals
- [00:16:43.720]throughout
- [00:16:44.520]history. The 20s, I mean,
- [00:16:46.550]pretty tame. There are
- [00:16:48.030]certainly more that are out
- [00:16:49.630]there, but I try to
- [00:16:51.240]pick a mixture of ones that
- [00:16:52.810]they maybe don't know about
- [00:16:54.010]that happened way back when.
- [00:16:55.660]And
- [00:16:56.040]then some of the more, again,
- [00:16:57.130]contemporary ones, which there
- [00:16:58.330]have been quite a few, even in
- [00:16:59.670]the
- [00:16:59.900]last few years. And then they
- [00:17:01.340]get together and they put
- [00:17:02.520]together a 10 minute multimedia
- [00:17:04.320]presentation on their
- [00:17:06.120]particular scandal. And then I
- [00:17:08.770]do use a textbook of sorts.
- [00:17:11.030]This one was
- [00:17:12.000]printed right about the time
- [00:17:13.480]that the Supreme Court decision
- [00:17:15.150]came down. So even though it
- [00:17:16.690]was
- [00:17:16.960]published in 2019, it's already
- [00:17:19.790]becoming somewhat dated, which
- [00:17:21.980]is pretty wild to think about.
- [00:17:24.670]But
- [00:17:26.020]it's a great way to write about
- [00:17:27.310]a 250 word summary and
- [00:17:28.580]reflection on the reading
- [00:17:29.740]material for about
- [00:17:32.080]10 to 11 weeks during the
- [00:17:33.890]semester. One part to keep me
- [00:17:35.430]up and to keep the students up
- [00:17:37.630]with what's
- [00:17:38.000]happening in the industry is
- [00:17:40.040]the list of guest speakers. So
- [00:17:42.320]Mike noted that he's spoken to
- [00:17:44.520]the
- [00:17:44.640]class and he was wonderful.
- [00:17:46.420]John has also spoken with the
- [00:17:48.140]class. I've had Jason Johnston,
- [00:17:50.440]who's
- [00:17:50.640]the War Horse Casino Sportsbook
- [00:17:52.590]Manager here in Lincoln. He's
- [00:17:54.420]come to talk to the class in
- [00:17:56.000]person.
- [00:17:56.000]I'll get back to you in a
- [00:17:57.780]second. David Faccio works for
- [00:18:00.370]Fox Media. This company has
- [00:18:02.780]several
- [00:18:03.980]media properties under its
- [00:18:05.650]umbrella, including Bleacher
- [00:18:07.610]Report, but they do some
- [00:18:09.130]gambling focused
- [00:18:10.380]content and reporting. And
- [00:18:12.580]David's kind of been on the
- [00:18:14.490]forefront of that. So he brings
- [00:18:17.030]a nice
- [00:18:17.560]perspective on responsibly
- [00:18:19.860]reporting on betting. Brad
- [00:18:22.720]Evans is a Fantasy Sports Hall
- [00:18:24.640]of Fame writer
- [00:18:25.980]and content producer, a really
- [00:18:28.180]energetic guy. He brings a good
- [00:18:30.710]perspective. His primary ethic
- [00:18:33.300]as a
- [00:18:33.840]fantasy sports or gambling
- [00:18:36.010]writer or content creator is
- [00:18:38.180]transparency. So he's the type,
- [00:18:41.090]he's
- [00:18:41.240]going to give you a full
- [00:18:42.520]spreadsheet of everything that
- [00:18:44.400]he does. You can see exactly
- [00:18:46.070]what he is
- [00:18:46.740]wagering himself and you can
- [00:18:48.750]see the outcomes of those wagers
- [00:18:51.020]that he does. And that's
- [00:18:52.880]something
- [00:18:55.960]these content creators that are
- [00:18:57.760]out there will actually do.
- [00:18:59.720]Danny Burke is a Nebraska grad.
- [00:19:02.660]He was
- [00:19:02.960]one of the first hires at Visa
- [00:19:04.460]and he now works for Action
- [00:19:05.850]Network, which is similar to Vox
- [00:19:07.610]Media
- [00:19:08.060]in terms of their family of
- [00:19:10.170]gambling content that they
- [00:19:12.380]produce. Brett Smiley is the co-founder
- [00:19:15.680]of a
- [00:19:15.940]website called Sports Handle.
- [00:19:18.010]That sprouted up in the mid-2010s
- [00:19:20.420]when FanDuel and DraftKings
- [00:19:22.220]began
- [00:19:22.740]to prominently advertise and
- [00:19:25.120]become a buyout.
- [00:19:25.940]So he's a very reliable
- [00:19:27.940]industry with their daily
- [00:19:29.160]fantasy sports products. Brett
- [00:19:31.210]Smiley has reported on the
- [00:19:33.250]industry for 10 years now and
- [00:19:36.760]he knows the industry's ins and
- [00:19:38.900]outs very, very well. So he's a
- [00:19:40.080]very good journalist and he
- [00:19:41.320]covers the industry
- [00:19:42.940]extraordinarily well.
- [00:19:44.080]Brett Abarbanel is the director
- [00:19:46.040]of the UNLV International
- [00:19:47.640]Gaming Institute. Most
- [00:19:49.680]importantly, she does research
- [00:19:52.430]on esports and betting.
- [00:19:55.920]Esports is fairly outside of my
- [00:19:58.200]realm of expertise. So Brett
- [00:20:00.980]was wonderful. Not only does
- [00:20:03.080]she head up the
- [00:20:03.700]wonderful UNLV International
- [00:20:05.290]Gaming Institute, but she had
- [00:20:06.870]that specific area of expertise.
- [00:20:08.800]And I've also had John Holden,
- [00:20:10.360]who is a legal scholar
- [00:20:11.440]currently at the University of
- [00:20:13.020]Indiana.
- [00:20:13.700]He used to be at Oklahoma State.
- [00:20:15.710]And so he brings the legal
- [00:20:16.970]perspective in there. I'm going
- [00:20:19.200]to go
- [00:20:19.580]back to Dustin Galker. So that's
- [00:20:21.510]the big face you see right
- [00:20:22.910]there in the glasses. Dustin
- [00:20:24.650]runs a company called Declosure.
- [00:20:25.900]He runs a company called Declosure.
- [00:20:26.380]He runs a company called Declosure.
- [00:20:41.100]He runs a company called Declosure.
- [00:20:55.880]He runs a consulting business.
- [00:20:57.650]But he is as plugged in as
- [00:20:58.890]anybody in the industry. And
- [00:21:00.820]really, I trust his reporting
- [00:21:03.650]above really anyone else in
- [00:21:06.120]this space.
- [00:21:07.100]So he's been very kind and
- [00:21:08.480]joined us a couple of times.
- [00:21:10.200]All right. So those are some of
- [00:21:12.280]the main ones. But here's the
- [00:21:14.370]driving force, I guess, behind
- [00:21:16.450]the class. And it's content
- [00:21:18.100]creation.
- [00:21:18.600]So again, I'm in a journalism
- [00:21:20.040]and media college. So that's
- [00:21:21.530]something that we do. This is
- [00:21:23.020]what our students are expected
- [00:21:24.530]to do.
- [00:21:25.860]So I'm trying to meld all
- [00:21:27.360]together all of these ideas,
- [00:21:28.870]the legality, the terminology,
- [00:21:31.060]the mechanics, everything into
- [00:21:33.100]11 weekly assignments.
- [00:21:34.780]For the first three weeks of
- [00:21:36.670]these weekly assignments, they
- [00:21:38.980]will compare and contrast three
- [00:21:41.230]tipsters content for the same
- [00:21:43.300]game.
- [00:21:44.000]So again, we're coming in with
- [00:21:45.820]different levels of expertise,
- [00:21:47.780]different levels of comfortability
- [00:21:49.950]with sports betting.
- [00:21:51.460]So what I have them do is pick
- [00:21:53.220]a game, say Nebraska versus...
- [00:21:55.840]Michigan. And they're going to
- [00:21:57.150]go out and find three different
- [00:21:58.520]people who have written about
- [00:22:00.160]this game and made some sort of
- [00:22:01.850]a prediction on it.
- [00:22:02.760]So they will compare and
- [00:22:04.060]contrast those tipsters. And so
- [00:22:06.280]on Thursday, they will turn
- [00:22:08.900]that in.
- [00:22:09.940]On Tuesday, we'll come back and
- [00:22:11.830]we're going to review what
- [00:22:13.370]happened in the game versus
- [00:22:14.990]what was in the content.
- [00:22:16.560]For the final eight weeks, they
- [00:22:18.050]do this on their own. So they
- [00:22:19.420]create their own content.
- [00:22:20.820]And I have them do the lock of
- [00:22:22.940]the week. So think of one bet.
- [00:22:25.820]Think of one outcome that you
- [00:22:27.320]think is absolutely certain to
- [00:22:28.980]happen.
- [00:22:29.580]And I want you to write some
- [00:22:31.270]content about it or do a social
- [00:22:33.200]media post.
- [00:22:34.240]And the same kind of thing. So
- [00:22:36.490]they do that. They turn it in
- [00:22:37.500]by Thursday.
- [00:22:38.100]Tuesday, we come back. They're
- [00:22:39.830]going to recap what happened in
- [00:22:41.310]the game.
- [00:22:41.920]And they're going to analyze
- [00:22:43.510]what their content was, what
- [00:22:45.200]they got right, what they got
- [00:22:46.860]wrong, maybe where their
- [00:22:48.740]assumptions were off base.
- [00:22:50.980]And so that's kind of the hook
- [00:22:52.310]of the assignment is it allows
- [00:22:53.710]them to critically examine.
- [00:22:55.800]What is being printed out there,
- [00:22:57.800]what is being produced, and
- [00:22:59.570]then that themselves to look
- [00:23:01.250]back critically at what their
- [00:23:02.710]own thought process is.
- [00:23:04.100]So here's an example of what
- [00:23:06.330]this looks like. I'm not sure
- [00:23:08.360]if you're going to be able to
- [00:23:09.280]hear this, but we're going to
- [00:23:10.280]try it.
- [00:23:10.720]So here's on the left. This is
- [00:23:12.540]the prediction.
- [00:23:13.500]This has UCLA takes on Nebraska
- [00:23:15.210]for Nebraska's first home game
- [00:23:16.920]in a week.
- [00:23:17.640]FanDuel has Nebraska as a six
- [00:23:19.100]and a half point favorite, and
- [00:23:20.700]I'm backing the Huskers to
- [00:23:22.040]cover.
- [00:23:22.700]UCLA is new to the Big Ten and
- [00:23:24.540]their season.
- [00:23:25.780]It has been quite rocky.
- [00:23:26.580]Both teams have had a mixed
- [00:23:27.770]season, but Nebraska has proven
- [00:23:29.240]its toughness against harder
- [00:23:30.650]points.
- [00:23:31.120]Nebraska's got the edge in
- [00:23:32.900]almost this Saturday.
- [00:23:34.520]Skip through this a little.
- [00:23:35.780]Let's get through this. There
- [00:23:39.960]we go.
- [00:23:40.360]Comment your thoughts and
- [00:23:41.700]subscribe and come back next
- [00:23:43.150]week to recap the game and see
- [00:23:44.590]more insights into this week's
- [00:23:46.510]biggest matchups.
- [00:23:47.380]All right. So I picked this one
- [00:23:50.470]because her post game analysis,
- [00:23:52.820]I thought was fantastic.
- [00:23:55.760]So it was earlier this fall.
- [00:23:58.480]It was the Nebraska-UCLA game.
- [00:24:01.720]Nebraska was obviously favored.
- [00:24:03.780]She picked Nebraska.
- [00:24:04.860]However, UCLA ends up winning
- [00:24:06.780]the game.
- [00:24:07.560]And so I've highlighted a few
- [00:24:08.550]things here.
- [00:24:09.120]Specifically, she noted what
- [00:24:10.370]she overestimated and what she
- [00:24:11.600]underestimated.
- [00:24:12.560]And then that final sentence I
- [00:24:14.480]thought was key and I thought
- [00:24:16.320]was very insightful on her part.
- [00:24:18.640]And she shows that this game
- [00:24:20.580]just shows how risky betting
- [00:24:22.520]can be, because even if the
- [00:24:23.870]stats and trends give a team
- [00:24:24.940]the percentage,
- [00:24:25.740]the likelihood of winning,
- [00:24:27.440]there can always be an
- [00:24:28.290]unexpected game or a team
- [00:24:29.690]arises when least expected.
- [00:24:31.160]I just love the word expected,
- [00:24:32.860]how many times are unexpected,
- [00:24:34.740]how often she used it and how
- [00:24:36.100]well she used it.
- [00:24:37.080]Words like perception, risk,
- [00:24:38.920]overestimate, underestimate.
- [00:24:40.880]I thought it was a really,
- [00:24:43.620]again, strong analysis of what
- [00:24:46.900]she had come up with.
- [00:24:49.340]And that's what I hope comes
- [00:24:51.630]out of this.
- [00:24:52.880]So here's how they did.
- [00:24:55.720]So they picked their locks of
- [00:24:56.860]the week, and then I keep track
- [00:24:58.050]of it throughout the semester.
- [00:24:59.260]So you can see week one, they
- [00:25:00.940]won eight, they lost 15, we had
- [00:25:03.150]three pushes.
- [00:25:04.260]And so as a team, as a class,
- [00:25:06.180]we're assuming this is a wager
- [00:25:08.180]of $100 on each of these games.
- [00:25:10.920]So as a class, we lost $900 in
- [00:25:12.790]that first week.
- [00:25:13.900]Now, I started to panic,
- [00:25:15.180]because as you come through
- [00:25:16.540]here, you see by week eight,
- [00:25:19.380]all of a sudden we were 18 and
- [00:25:20.820]11 and had won $1,500.
- [00:25:22.640]And I thought, they're going to
- [00:25:24.260]get the wrong message.
- [00:25:25.700]I'm going to get out of this.
- [00:25:26.200]Fortunately, quote unquote,
- [00:25:29.850]things evened out there at the
- [00:25:32.830]end.
- [00:25:33.660]And so by the end of the
- [00:25:34.850]semester, they had 95 correct
- [00:25:36.910]predictions, 120 incorrect
- [00:25:39.240]predictions, six pushes.
- [00:25:40.900]And so as a class, we lost
- [00:25:42.500]almost $2,400.
- [00:25:44.460]So again, this is the idea with
- [00:25:47.640]these content creations are
- [00:25:50.850]three primary learning outcomes.
- [00:25:54.520]So first is media literacy.
- [00:25:55.680]This is good and serves us in
- [00:25:57.280]many different ways, but
- [00:25:59.000]specific to sports betting,
- [00:26:01.670]what makes a tipster credible,
- [00:26:03.680]what went right, what went
- [00:26:06.390]wrong, what are maybe some
- [00:26:08.000]triggers that you can look for
- [00:26:09.680]that this person is maybe not
- [00:26:11.880]the best to listen to, or even
- [00:26:14.130]if they are the best to listen
- [00:26:15.920]to, did they get their
- [00:26:17.330]prediction correctly?
- [00:26:19.020]And more often than not,
- [00:26:20.540]actually, they don't.
- [00:26:22.180]And then I want them to think
- [00:26:23.100]about themselves in media
- [00:26:24.000]literacy.
- [00:26:24.520]What tools do you use?
- [00:26:25.660]What evidence did you use to
- [00:26:27.420]build your case when you were
- [00:26:29.270]making your own content for
- [00:26:31.040]these things?
- [00:26:32.200]Then it's also learning the
- [00:26:34.100]language.
- [00:26:35.080]So whether they become sports
- [00:26:36.740]bettors or not, even if they're
- [00:26:38.430]going to report on sports and
- [00:26:40.000]not have anything to do with
- [00:26:41.500]betting, we're at a point where
- [00:26:43.200]they need to at least
- [00:26:44.170]understand the language of it.
- [00:26:45.860]And that's becoming an
- [00:26:46.750]expectation now that we're
- [00:26:47.840]finding.
- [00:26:48.380]And I'm a strong believer, and
- [00:26:50.530]I think most of us on this call
- [00:26:52.500]here are, that education helps
- [00:26:54.850]inform.
- [00:26:55.640]Responsible reporting and
- [00:26:57.200]responsible content creation
- [00:26:59.000]and responsible behaviors
- [00:27:00.840]overall when it comes to sports
- [00:27:02.920]betting.
- [00:27:03.760]So my feeling is that if we are
- [00:27:05.470]training our media people to be
- [00:27:07.300]more responsible in talking
- [00:27:09.030]about sports betting, that this
- [00:27:11.300]next generation of sports bettors
- [00:27:13.540]who are coming up will
- [00:27:14.980]hopefully have better models
- [00:27:17.100]along the way as well.
- [00:27:18.660]And then, of course, a lock is
- [00:27:20.910]rarely a lock.
- [00:27:22.200]You see our record.
- [00:27:23.820]We lost as a class nearly 2400.
- [00:27:25.620]And these are the best bets,
- [00:27:27.870]right?
- [00:27:28.660]These are supposed to be the
- [00:27:30.200]things that absolutely are
- [00:27:31.760]going to happen.
- [00:27:32.920]We have no doubt in our mind
- [00:27:34.240]that this is the outcome for
- [00:27:35.620]this week.
- [00:27:36.320]And even on our quote unquote
- [00:27:38.930]best bets, we were not very
- [00:27:40.890]successful as a class.
- [00:27:43.080]Finally, they do one big
- [00:27:45.100]project at the end of the year,
- [00:27:46.860]multimedia project, and it's
- [00:27:48.960]student choice.
- [00:27:50.360]I leave this entirely up to the
- [00:27:51.950]student.
- [00:27:52.400]They have to clear the topic or
- [00:27:54.010]project with me.
- [00:27:55.600]But I want them to take this
- [00:27:57.190]however they want to take it.
- [00:27:59.160]So one talked about the online
- [00:28:01.140]harassment of college athletes.
- [00:28:03.560]What a really good paper on
- [00:28:04.500]that.
- [00:28:04.840]Another one talked about the
- [00:28:06.610]legality of Fliff.
- [00:28:07.980]Again, that's the sweepstakes
- [00:28:09.790]app, which, again, online
- [00:28:11.660]sports betting is not
- [00:28:12.690]technically legal in Nebraska.
- [00:28:14.880]However, these students are
- [00:28:16.990]able to use Fliff legally at
- [00:28:18.970]the moment.
- [00:28:20.020]And that includes people who
- [00:28:21.130]are under the age of 21.
- [00:28:22.320]The shifting of fan priority.
- [00:28:25.740]So it used to be game outcomes,
- [00:28:27.050]root for my favorite player.
- [00:28:28.480]Now this paper was looking at,
- [00:28:30.380]wow, fans are starting to look
- [00:28:32.270]more towards what's the over
- [00:28:34.020]under, what's the line.
- [00:28:35.860]Some just did betting content
- [00:28:37.790]creations for the college
- [00:28:39.490]football playoffs or the NBA
- [00:28:41.340]preview.
- [00:28:42.180]Some looked deep into sports
- [00:28:43.810]betting promotions and
- [00:28:45.180]partnerships, particularly with
- [00:28:47.260]college students and on college
- [00:28:49.080]campuses.
- [00:28:49.960]And then one or two started to
- [00:28:52.550]tackle sports betting at A&M.
- [00:28:55.560]I imagine in future classes,
- [00:28:58.370]that topic will become more
- [00:29:00.960]prominent.
- [00:29:02.380]That's some of the ideas.
- [00:29:04.920]So here's two specific examples
- [00:29:07.340]as well.
- [00:29:08.180]So the one on the left, this
- [00:29:10.350]student was an athlete at UNL.
- [00:29:12.960]This student interviewed fellow
- [00:29:15.430]UNL athletes, coaches, and
- [00:29:17.600]staff and actually got a wide
- [00:29:19.690]range of responses on how they
- [00:29:21.870]feel about sports betting in
- [00:29:23.990]general.
- [00:29:25.560]I'm not going to share the
- [00:29:28.520]video here today because I don't
- [00:29:32.120]have permission from her or
- [00:29:35.300]from the athletes to do so.
- [00:29:38.680]So I don't want to compromise
- [00:29:40.670]any of that.
- [00:29:41.680]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:29:44.710]here today because I don't have
- [00:29:47.600]permission from her or from the
- [00:29:50.640]athletes to do so.
- [00:29:52.760]So I don't want to compromise
- [00:29:54.490]any of that.
- [00:29:55.440]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:29:55.440]here today because I don't have
- [00:29:55.440]permission from her or from the
- [00:29:55.450]athletes to do so.
- [00:29:55.540]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:30:03.470]here today because I don't have
- [00:30:11.730]permission from her or from the
- [00:30:19.980]athletes to do so.
- [00:30:25.520]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:30:33.450]here today because I don't have
- [00:30:41.860]permission from her or from the
- [00:30:49.960]athletes to do so.
- [00:30:55.500]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:31:03.430]here today because I don't have
- [00:31:11.690]permission from her or from the
- [00:31:19.940]athletes to do so.
- [00:31:25.480]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:31:33.410]here today because I don't have
- [00:31:42.800]permission from her or from the
- [00:31:49.920]athletes to do so.
- [00:31:55.460]So I'm going to share the video
- [00:31:55.460]here today because I don't have
- [00:31:55.460]permission from her or from the
- [00:31:55.460]athletes to do so.
