- [00:00:00.000]well good morning everybody
- [00:00:07.340]thanks for joining us we know
- [00:00:09.670]it's a busy time of year and we
- [00:00:11.600]hope
- [00:00:11.940]that it's going well and we
- [00:00:13.190]also hope that the information
- [00:00:14.680]we're going to share today is
- [00:00:16.040]helpful
- [00:00:16.540]it's kind of fun to see the
- [00:00:17.910]evolution of this process and
- [00:00:19.520]see all the things that are
- [00:00:20.930]going on
- [00:00:21.480]just to start today i'm going
- [00:00:23.330]to share my screen and take you
- [00:00:25.260]back to where the information
- [00:00:27.210]for
- [00:00:27.580]all of this information is on
- [00:00:29.290]the mdp programs just in case
- [00:00:31.000]you've missed that or in case
- [00:00:32.710]you
- [00:00:33.020]just need a little catch-up and
- [00:00:36.860]we're going to go here to the
- [00:00:41.360]extension website so you all
- [00:00:43.430]know
- [00:00:43.760]how to get to that extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:46.590]all of the information for the
- [00:00:48.620]mdp programming
- [00:00:49.900]is here under about extension
- [00:00:53.200]employee resources
- [00:00:55.500]and
- [00:00:55.820]you're going to go to extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]and you're going to go to
- [00:00:57.560]extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]and you're going to go to
- [00:00:57.560]extension.unl.edu and you're
- [00:00:57.560]going to go to extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]extension.unl.edu and you're
- [00:00:57.560]going to go to extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]and you're going to go to
- [00:00:57.560]extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]extension.unl.edu and you're
- [00:00:57.560]going to go to extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]and you're going to go to
- [00:00:57.560]extension.unl.edu
- [00:00:57.560]and then from there i go down
- [00:00:58.880]to the employee resources page
- [00:01:00.800]and just so you know in case
- [00:01:02.760]you
- [00:01:02.900]haven't caught this our
- [00:01:04.420]employee resource pages aren't
- [00:01:06.440]behind firewalls anymore none
- [00:01:08.440]of those can
- [00:01:09.140]be passworded as we went into
- [00:01:10.980]the new system of drupal so as
- [00:01:12.800]you look at any pages that we've
- [00:01:14.980]got
- [00:01:15.300]anybody can click on those we
- [00:01:16.990]don't know what kind of hits
- [00:01:18.650]they get from outside of us but
- [00:01:20.520]just fyi so it's our employer
- [00:01:22.930]resource pages all of our work
- [00:01:25.440]is there if i go up here to
- [00:01:27.540]unit management i see nebraska
- [00:01:30.290]extension mvp i click on that
- [00:01:33.670]and it has the recordings
- [00:01:36.700]has some of the slide decks the
- [00:01:40.440]information that you need okay
- [00:01:43.260]so uh we are today going to be
- [00:01:48.240]looking at revenue generation
- [00:01:50.730]models and tools and so you
- [00:01:52.850]will get the live link or the
- [00:01:55.050]links to that
- [00:01:56.180]and the recordings after
- [00:01:57.520]today's recording but just
- [00:01:58.810]wanted to give you a heads up
- [00:02:00.220]on where that information was
- [00:02:01.760]any questions it doesn't allow
- [00:02:04.760]you to recall it no it's like
- [00:02:06.480]yours it's just okay you might
- [00:02:08.250]all
- [00:02:08.400]want to put yourself on mute
- [00:02:10.290]then check with hannah yeah
- [00:02:12.210]that's right sorry okay thanks
- [00:02:16.240]questions before we get started
- [00:02:19.120]today oh so mine's showing the
- [00:02:22.750]same as yours so i'll
- [00:02:27.500]i'm going to turn it over john
- [00:02:31.180]to you and in the meantime i'll
- [00:02:33.880]get people muted
- [00:02:35.020]oh great thanks kathleen um and
- [00:02:39.250]i appreciate everyone being on
- [00:02:41.440]this morning uh what i'm going
- [00:02:44.220]to try and do is um i've got a
- [00:02:46.420]couple of now kind of three
- [00:02:49.400]sections that i'm going to
- [00:02:50.820]cover
- [00:02:51.420]one is just a brief overview of
- [00:02:55.520]kind of
- [00:02:57.420]uh the motivation and rationale
- [00:03:02.970]for this whole effort uh so
- [00:03:05.420]just reviewing some slides that
- [00:03:07.100]i
- [00:03:07.180]presented last year about this
- [00:03:09.330]time then i'll go into some of
- [00:03:11.580]uh the updates that were made
- [00:03:13.740]to the spreadsheet tools that
- [00:03:16.180]we've got online and then uh we'll
- [00:03:18.890]finish up with uh some examples
- [00:03:21.740]i had
- [00:03:22.140]a good conversation with gentry
- [00:03:24.430]barrett last week we had talked
- [00:03:26.630]actually
- [00:03:27.340]gosh late late 2024 early 2025
- [00:03:32.410]about a couple of
- [00:03:33.980]collaborations that she was
- [00:03:36.460]involved with with
- [00:03:37.340]unmc and i think these are uh a
- [00:03:40.220]couple of really good examples
- [00:03:43.350]of how these kind of efforts
- [00:03:46.450]work
- [00:03:47.100]i would kind of muddle through
- [00:03:48.540]them for lack of a better word
- [00:03:49.920]of describing the process
- [00:03:51.340]and then just i think moving
- [00:03:53.980]forward thinking about the
- [00:03:56.810]close
- [00:03:57.260]uh closer collaboration that we'll
- [00:03:59.980]probably be having with unmc
- [00:04:02.140]in the future and looking at
- [00:04:04.270]and thinking about
- [00:04:05.750]opportunities for how those
- [00:04:07.980]might intersect with
- [00:04:09.580]our current program areas or
- [00:04:11.570]current programming that we're
- [00:04:13.810]doing and other opportunities
- [00:04:15.560]that
- [00:04:15.820]might exist and just being open
- [00:04:18.460]to to change which i think is
- [00:04:20.780]is part of our history and
- [00:04:22.890]extension so
- [00:04:24.140]let me
- [00:04:27.180]let's see if i can get that
- [00:04:29.260]i think i got that
- [00:04:39.100]all right are you seeing the
- [00:04:42.700]presentation we're not yet it
- [00:04:46.750]says uh you've started
- [00:04:48.380]screen sharing but we're not
- [00:04:50.790]seeing it oh there it goes
- [00:04:52.180]there we go and we'll see if it
- [00:04:54.200]works
- [00:04:57.100]slideshow anyway
- [00:04:57.900]okay
- [00:05:07.820]let's see
- [00:05:09.500]there we go
- [00:05:14.140]i gotta change the
- [00:05:23.420]sorry
- [00:05:27.020]sorry about this i gotta change
- [00:05:29.420]the screen that's actually
- [00:05:31.100]sharing
- [00:05:31.420]lots of pieces and parts yeah i
- [00:05:38.020]think i'm sure none of us have
- [00:05:40.280]experienced this before
- [00:05:41.660]there we go now she's up okay
- [00:05:44.690]so as i said before what i'm
- [00:05:46.410]going to try and do
- [00:05:47.660]in the first five minutes or so
- [00:05:49.790]is just kind of give
- [00:05:51.100]an overview of why we're going
- [00:05:53.600]down this path you know most of
- [00:05:56.100]you have been
- [00:05:56.940]involved with this now for a
- [00:05:58.560]year or more as faculty or
- [00:06:01.490]members of the mvp committee
- [00:06:03.820]and
- [00:06:04.860]just to bring us back to when
- [00:06:07.690]we first started this journey a
- [00:06:10.640]couple of things that we were
- [00:06:12.620]talking about and i want to
- [00:06:14.440]just remind folks about is this
- [00:06:16.540]whole effort uh that we've
- [00:06:19.420]undertaken in
- [00:06:20.220]nebraska extension is basically
- [00:06:22.900]designed to help us look at
- [00:06:24.910]ways we can maximize the value
- [00:06:26.860]of our
- [00:06:26.860]skills and the value of the
- [00:06:29.920]programming that we have done
- [00:06:30.680]historically or that we might
- [00:06:33.090]be doing
- [00:06:33.820]in the future to new audiences
- [00:06:36.720]new programming whatever that
- [00:06:39.750]may be and this effort is
- [00:06:42.880]grounded
- [00:06:43.420]in the idea that we're trying
- [00:06:45.260]to look at ways in which we can
- [00:06:47.090]leverage our skills
- [00:06:48.460]as faculty and staff in nebraska
- [00:06:50.770]extension to maximize the value
- [00:06:53.090]of the work that we do this is
- [00:06:56.780]not you know as we've said
- [00:06:58.320]repeatedly and as i want to
- [00:06:59.840]emphasize again this is not a
- [00:07:03.180]an effort
- [00:07:04.540]to chase dollars this isn't a
- [00:07:07.470]money grab so to speak what
- [00:07:09.580]this is is a way for us to
- [00:07:11.080]think about
- [00:07:12.220]how do we maximize the value of
- [00:07:15.960]the work that we do to both our
- [00:07:19.390]audiences
- [00:07:20.460]and to our colleagues within nebraska
- [00:07:23.070]extension and the university of
- [00:07:25.240]nebraska lincoln
- [00:07:27.420]so that's kind of the the
- [00:07:28.600]framework in which uh this
- [00:07:30.860]whole effort was started
- [00:07:32.860]um and as i said we're also
- [00:07:35.030]looking at not only um how do
- [00:07:37.420]we maximize the value of work
- [00:07:39.910]that we've
- [00:07:40.940]done historically but how do we
- [00:07:43.660]leverage our connections the uh
- [00:07:46.480]work that we have done in
- [00:07:48.620]the past potential partners etc
- [00:07:51.000]to increase that value to the
- [00:07:53.100]stakeholders that we serve
- [00:07:55.130]because at
- [00:07:56.060]the end of the day that's
- [00:07:58.060]really what we're about it's
- [00:08:00.650]about delivering quality
- [00:08:02.780]educational
- [00:08:03.420]programming that is going to
- [00:08:05.210]improve the lives and
- [00:08:06.540]livelihoods of the people of nebraska
- [00:08:09.070]and beyond
- [00:08:09.660]okay the other thing that i
- [00:08:12.860]wanted to to remind everyone
- [00:08:16.370]about uh and that i
- [00:08:18.620]always am thinking about when i'm
- [00:08:21.190]looking at areas where i might
- [00:08:23.490]be expanding is we need to
- [00:08:25.980]be thinking about how does this
- [00:08:28.470]potential change in what we're
- [00:08:30.970]doing align with the goals of
- [00:08:33.500]our
- [00:08:33.820]programming in terms of our
- [00:08:36.060]program area or us as an
- [00:08:37.900]individual or the team that we
- [00:08:40.340]work with
- [00:08:41.260]because that's where we have
- [00:08:44.070]the most potential for making
- [00:08:47.140]an impact is if we're
- [00:08:48.780]developing and delivering
- [00:08:50.600]programming or expanding
- [00:08:52.340]existing programming to new
- [00:08:54.240]audiences or expanding
- [00:08:55.900]it in new ways that's where we
- [00:08:57.740]have the biggest potential of
- [00:08:59.610]having a significant impact
- [00:09:01.440]because
- [00:09:02.060]we've got skills and abilities
- [00:09:04.660]and strengths developed in that
- [00:09:07.360]area and so we're leveraging
- [00:09:09.580]that to help expand and
- [00:09:11.490]increase the impact of the work
- [00:09:13.660]we do and so this may be
- [00:09:15.280]working with new
- [00:09:16.620]partners it may be expanding
- [00:09:18.880]those relationships uh whatever
- [00:09:21.520]the situation for you may be
- [00:09:23.730]that's
- [00:09:24.700]another key thing to remember
- [00:09:25.820]and i think that's a really
- [00:09:25.820]important thing to keep in mind
- [00:09:25.820]when you're
- [00:09:25.820]be reminded of throughout this
- [00:09:27.860]effort as we're looking at how
- [00:09:29.870]to what we do with new or
- [00:09:32.930]expanded
- [00:09:33.580]programming how does that align
- [00:09:36.910]with the goals of our team
- [00:09:39.770]ourselves uh i and r etc okay
- [00:09:43.980]and then last the last bullet
- [00:09:47.380]point there is the the idea
- [00:09:50.540]that
- [00:09:50.700]you know most of what we're
- [00:09:52.800]talking about is not new to nebraska
- [00:09:55.740]because
- [00:09:55.740]we've been doing this for a
- [00:09:57.170]long time we've been doing it
- [00:09:58.480]for a long time we've been
- [00:09:58.940]doing it for
- [00:09:58.940]a long time we've been doing it
- [00:09:59.570]for a long time we've been
- [00:09:59.970]doing it for a long time we've
- [00:10:00.510]been
- [00:10:00.780]doing it for a long time we've
- [00:10:01.260]been doing it for a long time
- [00:10:01.740]we've been doing it for a long
- [00:10:01.740]time
- [00:10:01.740]we've been doing it for a long
- [00:10:01.890]time we've been doing it for a
- [00:10:02.040]long time we've been doing it
- [00:10:02.300]for
- [00:10:02.300]a long time we've been doing it
- [00:10:02.420]for a long time we've been
- [00:10:02.500]doing it for a long time we've
- [00:10:02.600]been
- [00:10:02.700]doing it for a long time we've
- [00:10:02.940]been doing it for a long time
- [00:10:03.250]we've been doing it for a long
- [00:10:03.260]time
- [00:10:03.260]so over 100 120 years now
- [00:10:06.170]probably we've been working in
- [00:10:07.820]this space and doing these
- [00:10:09.480]things
- [00:10:09.820]okay so um one of the things
- [00:10:15.740]that this um these spreadsheet
- [00:10:19.990]tools uh evolve from
- [00:10:22.060]is this idea that we're trying
- [00:10:24.320]to help everyone
- [00:10:25.660]involved in our extension
- [00:10:29.330]programming understand what the
- [00:10:31.770]true cost
- [00:10:32.700]of developing and delivering
- [00:10:34.890]programming is in our state it's
- [00:10:38.100]not necessarily to develop a
- [00:10:42.780]cost
- [00:10:44.620]for the program and then that's
- [00:10:46.110]what we're going to charge
- [00:10:47.370]everyone who participates in it
- [00:10:49.260]that's
- [00:10:49.340]not what this is about it's to
- [00:10:51.320]help us understand the cost of
- [00:10:53.140]developing and delivering
- [00:10:55.310]programs
- [00:10:55.580]for the program and then that's
- [00:10:55.580]what we're going to charge
- [00:10:55.580]everyone who participates in it
- [00:10:55.580]that's
- [00:10:55.660]not what this is about it's to
- [00:10:55.660]help us understand the cost of
- [00:10:55.660]developing and delivering
- [00:10:55.660]programs
- [00:10:55.740]that are impactful and critical
- [00:10:58.230]to our stakeholders and then
- [00:11:00.520]help us understand
- [00:11:02.140]well gosh where might potential
- [00:11:04.720]sources of support be with
- [00:11:06.950]existing partners what are
- [00:11:09.420]some potential grant
- [00:11:10.870]opportunities etc so it's
- [00:11:12.440]designed really to help us
- [00:11:14.120]think holistically
- [00:11:16.300]about this whole effort of
- [00:11:18.300]covering the costs of
- [00:11:19.950]developing and delivering our
- [00:11:22.330]extension work and so
- [00:11:25.500]some of us already have
- [00:11:26.930]existing partnerships and some
- [00:11:28.990]of us have strong ones some of
- [00:11:30.860]us have some
- [00:11:31.580]that are just beginning and so
- [00:11:33.390]this is also an idea to help us
- [00:11:35.150]think about how can we leverage
- [00:11:36.860]those partnerships and how can
- [00:11:38.860]we have a conversation with
- [00:11:40.630]people uh if they approach us
- [00:11:42.540]about developing or delivering
- [00:11:44.750]a program uh that aligns with
- [00:11:46.690]what we're doing and so that'll
- [00:11:48.620]get
- [00:11:49.580]to uh the the last part of our
- [00:11:51.340]conversation this morning with
- [00:11:53.450]gentry and some folks from gmv
- [00:11:55.420]bc about some efforts that they
- [00:11:57.650]undertook okay just a brief um
- [00:12:02.860]a few points i wanted to make
- [00:12:05.900]uh just to set the stage so
- [00:12:07.710]these uh spreadsheet tools and
- [00:12:09.900]i'll go over i'm just going to
- [00:12:11.590]present
- [00:12:11.980]one of them this morning the
- [00:12:13.300]other is available online that
- [00:12:14.810]as well and i'll put both uh
- [00:12:17.500]recent
- [00:12:17.900]the most recent versions of
- [00:12:20.090]these on the employee uh
- [00:12:22.000]resources page uh later today
- [00:12:25.340]uh but just to remind folks
- [00:12:27.710]these were uh developed as a
- [00:12:31.000]result of input from both the mvp
- [00:12:34.620]committee but also faculty and
- [00:12:36.850]staff who've been working with
- [00:12:39.090]these or other kinds of tools
- [00:12:41.150]like
- [00:12:41.580]that some for quite a while
- [00:12:43.820]some of the one of the tools
- [00:12:45.980]that we have to help uh faculty
- [00:12:48.540]was developed
- [00:12:49.740]by some of our colleagues uh in
- [00:12:51.420]the 4-h arena and they've been
- [00:12:53.380]using that for quite a while to
- [00:12:54.890]help
- [00:12:55.260]them basically figure out how
- [00:12:57.510]much is it going to cost them
- [00:12:59.710]for supplies for a particular
- [00:13:02.040]like an
- [00:13:02.220]after-school program or a
- [00:13:03.540]particular 4-h program that
- [00:13:05.100]they're developing so they can
- [00:13:07.020]figure out how
- [00:13:07.420]are they going to cover the
- [00:13:09.270]cost of that all right another
- [00:13:11.780]thing that we wanted to bring
- [00:13:13.410]up uh or i
- [00:13:14.460]wanted to remind folks of is
- [00:13:17.360]that um what we are trying to
- [00:13:20.010]do through these efforts is
- [00:13:22.790]highlight some
- [00:13:25.180]of the successes that some of
- [00:13:27.230]our program areas have had as a
- [00:13:29.220]result of these and other
- [00:13:31.220]efforts
- [00:13:31.900]through the mvp umbrella and i
- [00:13:35.170]think some of you are aware i
- [00:13:38.190]think kathleen brought up i don't
- [00:13:41.420]know
- [00:13:41.500]if it was in the last uh last
- [00:13:43.500]session or maybe the one before
- [00:13:45.880]that about how successful this
- [00:13:48.400]effort
- [00:13:48.700]has been in terms of dollars
- [00:13:50.480]generated through these
- [00:13:52.130]programs and just wanted to
- [00:13:53.920]remind people that
- [00:13:55.100]some programs have been very
- [00:13:57.020]successful others are just
- [00:13:58.870]developing and beginning this
- [00:14:00.860]and the
- [00:14:01.500]other thing i wanted to remind
- [00:14:04.420]folks is this as all of you
- [00:14:05.980]know there is a cyclical nature
- [00:14:08.540]to a
- [00:14:08.860]lot of the programming that we
- [00:14:11.070]do so one program area uh if
- [00:14:12.970]you look at the numbers that kathleen
- [00:14:15.420]shared uh it may look like gosh
- [00:14:17.460]they're doing great work here
- [00:14:19.580]they're getting a lot of
- [00:14:20.500]revenue
- [00:14:21.020]and that may be a function of
- [00:14:22.640]the fact that most of their
- [00:14:24.180]programming
- [00:14:25.020]is done in the fall and winter
- [00:14:26.690]and then they don't do
- [00:14:28.260]necessarily a lot of
- [00:14:29.590]programming in the summer
- [00:14:30.940]spring and summer and others it
- [00:14:33.140]may be the exact opposite
- [00:14:34.900]situation and then others may
- [00:14:36.700]have year
- [00:14:37.260]round efforts and others may
- [00:14:39.630]have you know maybe a function
- [00:14:42.150]of a particular effort that
- [00:14:44.460]they're
- [00:14:44.780]working to develop so the thing
- [00:14:47.920]i would just say is don't
- [00:14:50.320]necessarily um or just let me
- [00:14:53.210]rephrase that
- [00:14:54.940]when you look at those numbers
- [00:14:56.740]that kathleen presented just be
- [00:14:58.940]mindful of that and try not
- [00:15:00.460]to be comparing your program
- [00:15:02.360]area with another program area
- [00:15:04.540]but look at how you in the
- [00:15:06.050]program
- [00:15:06.380]area in which you operate can
- [00:15:08.480]move to make your programs more
- [00:15:10.750]successful okay one last thing
- [00:15:17.580]and then i'll get to an
- [00:15:18.770]overview slide and this is as
- [00:15:20.710]um i think ruby urban had
- [00:15:24.860]several weeks back uh talked
- [00:15:27.740]about uh some of the effort
- [00:15:30.440]that our gmbc staff uh are are
- [00:15:34.350]doing
- [00:15:35.180]to help us navigate these
- [00:15:37.540]waters and so um i'm going to
- [00:15:40.010]be talking with them later
- [00:15:42.700]during the
- [00:15:43.180]broadcast uh they're in the
- [00:15:44.790]webinar with gentry to talk
- [00:15:46.400]about how gentry in particular
- [00:15:48.220]worked with
- [00:15:48.940]them to then kind of navigate
- [00:15:50.860]through some questions that she
- [00:15:53.030]had and just to emphasize
- [00:15:54.780]the importance uh for all of us
- [00:15:57.700]to interact with those within
- [00:16:00.700]uh our sphere as early as we
- [00:16:04.540]can to
- [00:16:06.060]help us make the best decisions
- [00:16:08.120]uh and navigating these these
- [00:16:10.120]waters because sometimes some
- [00:16:11.990]of these
- [00:16:12.380]situations that we're talking
- [00:16:14.550]about are new or unique and so
- [00:16:16.540]it's better to have more minds
- [00:16:18.940]thinking about this that's the
- [00:16:20.830]way i've always tried to
- [00:16:22.270]approach it you know more minds
- [00:16:24.170]or more
- [00:16:24.700]more brains working on this are
- [00:16:26.510]better than one i know i don't
- [00:16:28.190]have all the answers and so i
- [00:16:30.060]always
- [00:16:30.860]look to others and their
- [00:16:32.860]expertise to help me navigate
- [00:16:35.360]these situations okay so just
- [00:16:37.900]last slide
- [00:16:39.900]this morning for me anyway uh
- [00:16:42.310]just wanted to go over i'll go
- [00:16:44.710]over some of the uh updates to
- [00:16:47.180]the
- [00:16:47.500]the larger spreadsheet tool
- [00:16:49.520]that was developed last year
- [00:16:51.350]then we'll move on into talking
- [00:16:53.430]with
- [00:16:54.620]and gmbc folks on a couple
- [00:16:57.210]three examples that that she
- [00:17:00.200]has on interactions with and
- [00:17:03.270]collaborations
- [00:17:04.220]with uh unmc and then uh talk
- [00:17:07.360]about how we and she work
- [00:17:10.100]through that uh and then talk
- [00:17:13.400]about what
- [00:17:14.380]does that look like moving
- [00:17:16.810]forward and then open it up for
- [00:17:19.620]questions so that's that for my
- [00:17:22.540]let me
- [00:17:24.540]just move on into the
- [00:17:27.160]presentation or powerpoint let's
- [00:17:31.900]move that now let me just move
- [00:17:34.820]on into the
- [00:17:36.460]spreadsheet quick like get too
- [00:17:45.620]many screens open i think okay
- [00:17:54.460]okay so let's go over this
- [00:17:57.070]quick like so as you may recall
- [00:17:59.010]this um this spreadsheet tool
- [00:18:02.540]don you might want to just blow
- [00:18:04.080]it up a little bit on your
- [00:18:05.300]screen that's all
- [00:18:06.220]you mean you can't read that
- [00:18:08.190]without binoculars charlie
- [00:18:10.300]you're gonna make me cheat on
- [00:18:13.850]this one yeah yeah no thank you
- [00:18:17.090]and that's yeah i usually
- [00:18:19.020]have to put it up above that
- [00:18:20.630]too um so is that good can
- [00:18:21.820]people see that a little better
- [00:18:24.380]much better okay great so just
- [00:18:27.080]uh just a reminder folks this
- [00:18:31.260]spreadsheet which is available
- [00:18:32.620]online
- [00:18:33.180]um or this modif the the newest
- [00:18:35.520]version will be up there later
- [00:18:37.540]today
- [00:18:38.060]um but it has it's kind of
- [00:18:40.080]divided into into two different
- [00:18:42.890]areas uh there's kind of this
- [00:18:45.180]overview sheet here that talks
- [00:18:48.330]about uh what this is but
- [00:18:50.720]basically there's two sets of
- [00:18:53.790]four
- [00:18:54.300]sheets the first set is is when
- [00:18:57.230]you're developing a program and
- [00:18:59.440]you're kind of estimating uh
- [00:19:02.940]the
- [00:19:03.100]number of people that might
- [00:19:04.600]come the number of times you're
- [00:19:06.300]going to do these trainings
- [00:19:07.900]and then what your costs and
- [00:19:10.730]expected revenue or income from
- [00:19:14.060]that might be
- [00:19:15.500]from either fees that you might
- [00:19:18.700]charge for registration or
- [00:19:21.760]grants donations etc and
- [00:19:24.220]so you can put all that in
- [00:19:25.260]there then this so this is that
- [00:19:28.180]that first part
- [00:19:29.900]is basically useful when you're
- [00:19:32.570]looking at uh putting in a
- [00:19:34.700]proposal for example for a
- [00:19:36.860]grant
- [00:19:37.580]uh or looking at support from a
- [00:19:39.740]collaborator and you're saying
- [00:19:42.100]gosh
- [00:19:42.540]this is what i've estimated
- [00:19:44.300]this cost is going to be i'm
- [00:19:45.970]looking for donations for
- [00:19:47.660]support for
- [00:19:48.540]collaboration here how much you
- [00:19:50.730]know could you help me with and
- [00:19:52.200]then you got what this helps
- [00:19:53.810]you
- [00:19:54.140]do is have specific details
- [00:19:57.010]which a lot of funders uh
- [00:19:59.570]appreciate um because it gives
- [00:20:02.780]them a better
- [00:20:03.260]understanding of essentially
- [00:20:04.630]what are they getting for the
- [00:20:05.900]money that they're uh
- [00:20:07.610]contributing to this
- [00:20:09.180]particular effort then the next
- [00:20:11.800]set of four questions that are
- [00:20:14.350]the a1 through a4
- [00:20:16.060]are basically what you do to
- [00:20:18.490]kind of keep track of your
- [00:20:20.700]expenses and your income the
- [00:20:23.280]numbers
- [00:20:24.060]of people that participated etc
- [00:20:26.250]and what this will do is it'll
- [00:20:28.170]help you better understand
- [00:20:30.140]okay i estimate it i'll bring
- [00:20:31.770]up the example in a minute i
- [00:20:33.220]estimated this number of people
- [00:20:35.180]be here
- [00:20:36.140]this is how many actually
- [00:20:37.830]registered and participated so
- [00:20:40.570]um and this is how much i
- [00:20:42.780]generated in revenue and etc so
- [00:20:46.580]um excuse me that's kind of how
- [00:20:50.410]this tool is divided and
- [00:20:53.980]um you know as i've always said
- [00:20:56.340]please use it let me know what
- [00:20:58.850]could be done differently and i'm
- [00:21:00.940]happy
- [00:21:01.260]to modify it and make updates
- [00:21:03.830]at any time okay so let's look
- [00:21:06.400]at the first set here
- [00:21:08.380]which is uh like i said kind of
- [00:21:11.910]an overview of the program
- [00:21:15.180]so this is basically where you
- [00:21:17.940]put in the details on um what
- [00:21:20.470]you're planning to do for this
- [00:21:23.010]project
- [00:21:23.980]and so this one um is a project
- [00:21:26.060]that you're going to be
- [00:21:27.710]developing for this july it's
- [00:21:31.420]going to be
- [00:21:31.980]and you can change all of this
- [00:21:33.680]these are just examples or
- [00:21:35.260]placeholders but essentially
- [00:21:37.180]what
- [00:21:37.260]you're going to be doing is you're
- [00:21:39.010]going to have two training
- [00:21:40.410]sessions with about 100 people
- [00:21:42.540]each and that's what your
- [00:21:44.960]estimated participation would
- [00:21:47.670]be
- [00:21:47.740]and then you go through here
- [00:21:49.640]and you get three faculty
- [00:21:51.420]involved maybe uh or maybe
- [00:21:53.900]four i'll have to update that
- [00:21:56.140]and then you have uh estimates
- [00:21:58.530]of how much they uh earn with
- [00:22:02.140]salary
- [00:22:02.540]and benefits just to give you
- [00:22:04.340]an idea of what the total
- [00:22:05.840]personnel commitment is there
- [00:22:07.910]and we'll show
- [00:22:09.500]you what that is in the
- [00:22:11.700]overview in a minute and then
- [00:22:14.940]you also have um you know you're
- [00:22:17.500]going to be
- [00:22:18.060]traveling to do the programming
- [00:22:20.360]so you've got well how many
- [00:22:22.210]miles is each faculty
- [00:22:23.820]member going to travel what's
- [00:22:25.830]uh you know the mileage rate
- [00:22:27.540]here that's a change from last
- [00:22:29.500]year
- [00:22:29.580]now we just have one mileage
- [00:22:31.420]rate uh regardless of where you're
- [00:22:33.750]located um and then you know
- [00:22:37.660]you
- [00:22:37.820]can change this for each each
- [00:22:39.810]individual person to give you
- [00:22:41.880]an idea of what your your
- [00:22:44.140]mileage cost
- [00:22:45.180]will be for those faculty to
- [00:22:46.660]help you with that program and
- [00:22:48.460]then if you've got faculty that
- [00:22:51.900]have
- [00:22:52.060]to spend the night at a
- [00:22:53.120]particular location you're
- [00:22:53.740]going to have to spend the
- [00:22:53.740]night at a particular
- [00:22:53.740]area where you're going to be
- [00:22:56.190]doing the programming what's
- [00:22:57.640]that going to cost
- [00:22:58.540]how many meals they might uh or
- [00:23:00.970]days with meals they might have
- [00:23:03.580]whether it's the first day or
- [00:23:06.060]last
- [00:23:06.380]day etc and those are some
- [00:23:08.750]things basic things that uh
- [00:23:11.340]were updated this past year
- [00:23:13.980]just to
- [00:23:14.300]reflect the latest uh rates for
- [00:23:17.330]mileage for meals uh reimbursements
- [00:23:20.810]rates for the university etc
- [00:23:23.660]and those will be uh you know
- [00:23:25.320]updated every year as those
- [00:23:26.970]things get changed
- [00:23:28.220]okay so next section that we
- [00:23:34.370]deal with is you know some of
- [00:23:37.490]the the mechanics of the
- [00:23:39.180]actual program so oftentimes we
- [00:23:41.610]have meals associated with
- [00:23:43.770]those so we put those in here
- [00:23:45.660]um and that's important
- [00:23:47.720]especially when you're looking
- [00:23:50.250]at uh sponsorship or maybe a
- [00:23:52.720]particular
- [00:23:53.580]break that's often the way some
- [00:23:55.630]of these work you might get a
- [00:23:57.450]local bank or local
- [00:23:58.700]organization
- [00:23:59.500]to help cover the cost of maybe
- [00:24:01.830]the registration coffee donuts
- [00:24:04.370]etc so this gives you a tool to
- [00:24:06.540]help
- [00:24:06.700]you figure it okay well this is
- [00:24:09.430]what it might cost me um what
- [00:24:12.110]are the meals costing etc so
- [00:24:14.380]you can
- [00:24:15.020]approach a potential sponsor
- [00:24:17.490]with those kind of of details
- [00:24:19.520]uh and and see what they can do
- [00:24:22.150]there
- [00:24:23.500]um other things i wanted to
- [00:24:25.230]bring up uh updates um or
- [00:24:28.320]changes and these are going to
- [00:24:30.440]change again
- [00:24:31.260]um a couple things so in this
- [00:24:33.590]situation the example i've got
- [00:24:36.230]here we're assuming
- [00:24:38.060]that there's going to be an
- [00:24:40.530]online registration and they
- [00:24:43.360]are uh running this through cvent
- [00:24:46.620]which
- [00:24:46.860]is currently the the the
- [00:24:48.270]program that we have with
- [00:24:49.750]extension and with the
- [00:24:51.090]university uh for conference
- [00:24:53.420]registration uh there are going
- [00:24:55.590]to be changes with that over
- [00:24:57.430]the next year i believe uh dave
- [00:25:00.220]talked about this uh in a huddle
- [00:25:02.840]i think last month uh but for
- [00:25:05.180]now we are continuing to use cvent
- [00:25:07.900]until uh changes are made i
- [00:25:09.960]believe it's going to be
- [00:25:11.330]through pears is how the new uh
- [00:25:14.140]possible
- [00:25:14.620]registration and and uh
- [00:25:16.710]processing of fees will be run
- [00:25:19.410]but for currently we're running
- [00:25:22.360]those through
- [00:25:23.340]events so just be mindful that
- [00:25:26.160]in many cases the registration
- [00:25:28.680]excuse me the per transaction
- [00:25:31.890]fee for
- [00:25:32.540]using cvent to register is five
- [00:25:36.060]dollars and fifty cents so each
- [00:25:39.600]registration uh or refund for
- [00:25:42.940]registration if you have to run
- [00:25:44.880]those is gonna cost you five
- [00:25:46.600]dollars and fifty cents in
- [00:25:49.080]addition
- [00:25:50.220]there is a credit card
- [00:25:51.910]transaction fee
- [00:25:53.260]fee that is charged uh for
- [00:25:57.670]credit card use and that's
- [00:26:00.070]three percent of the value of
- [00:26:01.500]that
- [00:26:01.740]uh transaction so those are
- [00:26:03.720]numbers that we've got included
- [00:26:06.040]in here as expenses
- [00:26:07.500]uh so one thing i just wanted
- [00:26:10.030]you to remember and be mindful
- [00:26:12.780]of is that um you know if you're
- [00:26:15.740]going to be doing a
- [00:26:17.260]registration uh through cvent
- [00:26:19.920]and you're only charging ten
- [00:26:22.660]dollars
- [00:26:23.180]for the event that's probably
- [00:26:26.230]not a good use of anyone's
- [00:26:28.990]resources so you might want to
- [00:26:30.540]think about
- [00:26:31.100]another another approach to
- [00:26:33.130]doing the registration and
- [00:26:35.070]there are others that are
- [00:26:36.650]available and we can
- [00:26:37.580]talk about that uh but the the
- [00:26:40.490]reality is is that given the
- [00:26:42.760]high cost of the cvent system
- [00:26:45.260]using that to register for uh
- [00:26:47.760]sessions where the registration
- [00:26:50.700]fees just a nominal amount
- [00:26:53.100]is probably not worth using
- [00:26:56.510]that uh platform and so look at
- [00:26:58.690]other ways to keep account of
- [00:27:00.540]your
- [00:27:00.780]the folks that are going there
- [00:27:03.700]okay
- [00:27:03.740]so looking up all these things
- [00:27:07.600]you get this uh total uh
- [00:27:12.060]expenses of about 82.88
- [00:27:16.220]for this program given what we're
- [00:27:18.500]doing they gotta they've got
- [00:27:20.370]some handouts they've got booklets
- [00:27:23.020]or books that they're giving
- [00:27:25.180]out so this this is a fairly
- [00:27:27.160]intensive
- [00:27:28.060]type of training that's going
- [00:27:30.000]to be probably an all-day event
- [00:27:31.980]so as a result of that in this
- [00:27:35.540]situation i'll try and get
- [00:27:37.830]through this quick like um
- [00:27:41.260]you know they've got um again
- [00:27:46.350]like i said they've got a
- [00:27:48.880]hundred books for or booklets
- [00:27:51.880]for eight
- [00:27:52.940]hours each of the sessions they've
- [00:27:54.690]got two sessions uh i've got a
- [00:27:56.990]hundred books of four
- [00:27:57.980]dollars each so times the two
- [00:27:59.720]is eight hundred dollars for
- [00:28:01.500]just that and that's being
- [00:28:04.180]charged
- [00:28:04.860]to the people that are
- [00:28:06.410]registering possibly unless we're
- [00:28:08.990]getting a you know somebody
- [00:28:11.020]sponsoring that
- [00:28:11.820]uh and then this goes through
- [00:28:13.560]some of the other revenue that
- [00:28:15.370]we're getting
- [00:28:16.300]through the various registrations
- [00:28:18.910]and the registration fees again
- [00:28:21.260]here
- [00:28:22.860]um these are fairly modest 25
- [00:28:25.460]to 40 50 um then we look at the
- [00:28:29.880]kinds of sponsorship that we've
- [00:28:31.820]got
- [00:28:32.060]here so this is other support
- [00:28:33.980]that we're getting to run this
- [00:28:35.980]program so we've got uh in this
- [00:28:39.580]example we've got a couple of
- [00:28:41.350]sponsors that are putting up
- [00:28:43.060]750 dollars at least that's
- [00:28:45.260]what they've
- [00:28:46.140]they promised when we were
- [00:28:47.890]developing this program um and
- [00:28:49.980]talking with them and then we've
- [00:28:52.140]got some
- [00:28:52.780]other folks uh like the
- [00:28:54.440]publisher is going to put in
- [00:28:56.440]250 dollars towards the cost of
- [00:28:59.340]publishing
- [00:28:59.900]those books so giving us a
- [00:29:01.880]discount on that um and then
- [00:29:04.190]there's some other things in
- [00:29:06.330]there as well
- [00:29:07.260]so our estimated income is
- [00:29:08.890]going to be about ten thousand
- [00:29:10.740]six hundred dollars and then
- [00:29:14.190]this last
- [00:29:15.100]sheet here under the ease the e4
- [00:29:17.540]just is kind of a summary sheet
- [00:29:19.720]and this is one that you might
- [00:29:21.980]want
- [00:29:22.700]to get closely when you're um
- [00:29:25.100]when you're going through this
- [00:29:28.070]to make sure that these numbers
- [00:29:29.980]are
- [00:29:30.380]balancing so you know we look
- [00:29:32.900]at this what's our estimated
- [00:29:35.420]income from participation and
- [00:29:38.220]sales is
- [00:29:38.860]about 73.50 then we've got some
- [00:29:42.830]other expenses in here about 10
- [00:29:45.940]000 a little over 10 000 so
- [00:29:49.980]essentially
- [00:29:51.580]if we weren't
- [00:29:52.620]uh getting sponsorships and
- [00:29:54.780]donors etc we'd be losing about
- [00:29:56.780]twenty seven hundred dollars in
- [00:29:59.020]expenses or excuse me we'd be
- [00:30:00.740]losing about twenty seven
- [00:30:02.310]hundred dollars if we were to
- [00:30:04.060]develop and
- [00:30:04.620]deliver this program as is so
- [00:30:07.160]that i think helps point out
- [00:30:09.330]the importance of doing this
- [00:30:11.890]exercise
- [00:30:12.620]to help us understand the level
- [00:30:15.150]of support that we need to get
- [00:30:17.500]to help us uh cover the cost of
- [00:30:19.900]this
- [00:30:20.540]uh this event this program
- [00:30:22.540]um and so because otherwise we'd
- [00:30:26.860]have to increase the
- [00:30:28.860]registration fee potentially
- [00:30:32.220]for that and that
- [00:30:33.420]may preclude others from some
- [00:30:34.990]of the participants from
- [00:30:36.310]actually participating in this
- [00:30:38.040]okay and then
- [00:30:41.820]the actual program uh details
- [00:30:44.960]that's you know kind of an
- [00:30:47.650]after your program is done or
- [00:30:50.680]kind of in the
- [00:30:51.660]middle of it too
- [00:30:52.460]you know you're putting in how
- [00:30:54.380]many people actually
- [00:30:55.420]participated in it
- [00:30:56.860]uh how many faculty actually
- [00:30:59.130]participated and helped with
- [00:31:01.540]the training
- [00:31:02.300]how what were their lodging
- [00:31:04.270]expenses how much mileage was
- [00:31:06.420]actually used okay and that
- [00:31:11.420]gets put in
- [00:31:12.060]this session here on uh you
- [00:31:14.720]know again how much we actually
- [00:31:18.140]spent for the meals the
- [00:31:21.170]material
- [00:31:22.380]uh room rentals uh all these
- [00:31:27.600]other things on the uh the
- [00:31:30.540]registration and then also what
- [00:31:33.620]kind of revenue
- [00:31:35.100]came in and some sponsorship
- [00:31:37.370]and support did we have so the
- [00:31:39.640]registration the the booklets
- [00:31:41.980]which
- [00:31:42.940]were charged we got seven
- [00:31:45.090]hundred and sixty eight dollars
- [00:31:48.170]for that we got about forty
- [00:31:50.110]five hundred
- [00:31:51.340]eighty dollars in registration
- [00:31:53.490]fees and then we got about
- [00:31:55.570]thirty one seventy five in
- [00:31:58.130]support from
- [00:31:59.420]the various donors some of
- [00:32:01.350]which uh ended up not being
- [00:32:03.520]able to support at the level
- [00:32:05.420]they had
- [00:32:05.980]initially uh indicated in
- [00:32:08.220]others uh a little more than
- [00:32:10.560]they were able to uh what they
- [00:32:13.020]had
- [00:32:13.420]initially indicated so at the
- [00:32:16.550]end of the day um what we ended
- [00:32:19.300]up if we look at this
- [00:32:21.260]sheet here we can see uh we
- [00:32:24.680]ended up uh just covering the
- [00:32:28.660]expenses uh about 290 dollars
- [00:32:33.020]so we're able to deliver the
- [00:32:35.440]program we had almost 200
- [00:32:38.370]people participate 196 i think
- [00:32:41.670]it was
- [00:32:42.300]and we were able to do that and
- [00:32:45.580]we actually uh ended up with a
- [00:32:48.900]little bit of extra
- [00:32:51.180]surplus at the end of that and
- [00:32:53.540]that would help our particular
- [00:32:56.070]program area that includes and
- [00:32:59.900]um
- [00:33:00.380]and and and some of the and
- [00:33:03.840]part of the revenue that goes
- [00:33:06.710]back to uh the ten percent that
- [00:33:08.860]goes
- [00:33:09.100]back to extension uh and then
- [00:33:11.100]to your program area the five
- [00:33:12.810]percent that's retained for
- [00:33:14.780]your
- [00:33:14.940]program area all that's
- [00:33:16.750]included in this so um that's
- [00:33:18.920]kind of a summary an example of
- [00:33:21.100]what we went through i don't
- [00:33:22.590]know if we have any questions
- [00:33:24.750]on any of this i'll have uh you
- [00:33:27.580]know a few minutes for
- [00:33:29.620]questions on this and then we'll
- [00:33:32.660]ask um if there are other
- [00:33:34.920]questions on okay
- [00:33:39.180]so silvana asked about how do
- [00:33:42.940]sponsorships work do donations
- [00:33:46.460]go directly to the program
- [00:33:48.380]or do they have to be processed
- [00:33:49.890]for the nu foundation
- [00:33:51.020]so it depends um
- [00:33:55.180]so for example uh what i think
- [00:33:58.140]about is just a concrete
- [00:34:00.380]example so we have
- [00:34:01.580]a field day out at our research
- [00:34:04.690]facility out in the panhandle
- [00:34:06.860]and so we solicit
- [00:34:09.660]sponsorships from local uh
- [00:34:13.340]banks local uh equipment
- [00:34:18.690]dealers
- [00:34:20.940]uh the uh local uh bean growers
- [00:34:25.100]association etc and essentially
- [00:34:27.600]what they do is they uh give a
- [00:34:31.340]check
- [00:34:31.980]and it goes into this
- [00:34:34.020]particular account that we have
- [00:34:36.900]for this um
- [00:34:38.620]our field day and that's
- [00:34:42.340]identified as a sponsorship etc
- [00:34:47.420]um in the way that it's handled
- [00:34:50.860]in terms of the journal entry
- [00:34:52.570]in the for that accounting and
- [00:34:54.490]so it goes directly into that
- [00:34:56.300]um
- [00:34:56.540]that account and then that
- [00:34:59.480]account minus all the expenses
- [00:35:02.950]for the meals etc
- [00:35:05.020]those get credited or debited
- [00:35:07.350]against that so that's the way
- [00:35:09.740]that particular uh sponsorship
- [00:35:12.540]works but now it varies
- [00:35:14.710]depending on the kind of
- [00:35:17.000]donation it is and that's why
- [00:35:20.780]i would suggest talking to the
- [00:35:22.440]business folks in your unit and
- [00:35:25.480]they can help you clarify
- [00:35:27.420]because
- [00:35:27.580]it really comes down to the
- [00:35:28.950]purpose of the fund and the
- [00:35:30.330]source of the fund and so those
- [00:35:32.780]are the
- [00:35:33.100]two big determinants of that i
- [00:35:35.600]think that's a great segue into
- [00:35:38.200]the next section uh which is
- [00:35:40.780]gentry barrett and uh let's see
- [00:35:43.750]we have a couple folks i think
- [00:35:46.480]we have alicia's here from gmvc
- [00:35:49.580]as
- [00:35:49.740]well i don't know if sarah
- [00:35:50.700]wants to say anything about
- [00:35:50.700]that but i think it's a great
- [00:35:50.700]segue into the next section uh
- [00:35:50.700]which is gentry barrett and uh
- [00:35:50.700]let's see we have a couple
- [00:35:50.700]folks i think we have alicia's
- [00:35:50.700]here from gmbc as well i don't
- [00:35:50.700]know if sarah
- [00:35:50.700]was able to join or not but
- [00:35:52.710]yeah i think i see sarah too
- [00:35:53.900]okay so gentry why don't you
- [00:35:56.140]get us
- [00:35:56.460]started in this next section
- [00:35:58.750]and we can talk about our
- [00:36:00.640]experience and our con uh
- [00:36:03.110]collaboration and
- [00:36:04.060]conversations etc thanks john i
- [00:36:06.710]really appreciate it i also
- [00:36:08.130]really appreciate
- [00:36:09.500]all the labor you went in with
- [00:36:11.490]that spreadsheet uh there's
- [00:36:13.710]there's a a saying that i flip
- [00:36:15.580]around
- [00:36:15.820]that i'm too flippant with like
- [00:36:17.550]there's not a lot that a
- [00:36:18.840]spreadsheet can't solve and so
- [00:36:20.620]that was excellent work john
- [00:36:22.900]well done so i i think the
- [00:36:25.000]reason john wanted me to talk
- [00:36:27.190]about
- [00:36:27.460]my experience over the past
- [00:36:29.770]seven months is that it doesn't
- [00:36:32.380]fit neatly into what we just
- [00:36:35.840]went through
- [00:36:36.300]with this spreadsheet because
- [00:36:37.790]it's not necessarily
- [00:36:38.810]programming and it's not
- [00:36:40.000]necessarily a grant but
- [00:36:41.740]we had partners who wanted to
- [00:36:43.770]give us money and we had to
- [00:36:45.540]figure out how are we going to
- [00:36:47.560]partner
- [00:36:48.220]with them so for the past three
- [00:36:50.780]years charlie dr charlie and i
- [00:36:53.360]have been working to develop
- [00:36:55.500]relationships with the
- [00:36:57.460]university of nebraska medical
- [00:36:59.920]center up in omaha and right at
- [00:37:02.520]the end
- [00:37:03.180]of 2024 some partnership
- [00:37:05.700]opportunities presented
- [00:37:08.050]themselves and they kind of
- [00:37:09.630]like stacked right
- [00:37:10.940]on top of each other and so for
- [00:37:12.660]for since then we've been
- [00:37:14.380]really trying to figure out how
- [00:37:16.370]do we
- [00:37:18.140]navigate these sorts of
- [00:37:19.500]partnerships that don't fit
- [00:37:21.180]neatly into these buckets that
- [00:37:23.260]we've already
- [00:37:23.980]determined how how we proceed
- [00:37:26.240]so the first is that the fred
- [00:37:28.310]and pamela buffett cancer
- [00:37:30.380]center
- [00:37:30.780]reached out and said okay part
- [00:37:34.040]of our mission is to provide
- [00:37:37.030]education and and cancer cancer
- [00:37:40.540]education cancer prevention
- [00:37:42.910]education across the state and
- [00:37:45.530]instead of us hiring new people
- [00:37:47.820]to
- [00:37:48.060]do this could we possibly buy
- [00:37:50.560]out some extension educators
- [00:37:53.180]time to do this cancer
- [00:37:55.350]education and
- [00:37:56.380]prevention work especially in
- [00:37:58.860]they wanted some in the panhandle
- [00:38:01.380]they wanted some in northeastern
- [00:38:03.580]nebraska and so that was
- [00:38:05.310]opportunity number one
- [00:38:07.370]opportunity number two the fred
- [00:38:09.430]and pamela buffett
- [00:38:10.940]cancer center came back again
- [00:38:12.860]and said we have been putting
- [00:38:14.710]on these events called science
- [00:38:16.700]cafes
- [00:38:17.180]where our faculty are where we're
- [00:38:19.530]pulling together members of the
- [00:38:21.800]community and our
- [00:38:23.020]cancer faculty are presenting
- [00:38:25.150]information about cancer to
- [00:38:27.120]them we've done them
- [00:38:28.510]successfully in
- [00:38:29.740]omaha we'd like to do them
- [00:38:31.230]across the state but we don't
- [00:38:32.980]have the social capital that
- [00:38:34.700]extension does
- [00:38:35.820]could we possibly pay for
- [00:38:37.420]engagement zone coordinators to
- [00:38:39.590]help us put on these events
- [00:38:41.180]across the state and help us
- [00:38:42.940]recruit people who would come
- [00:38:44.860]to these events and then the
- [00:38:46.740]third
- [00:38:47.100]opportunity was the college of
- [00:38:48.640]public health a faculty member
- [00:38:50.160]of the college of public health
- [00:38:51.500]reached out and said we have
- [00:38:54.000]been we have a survey that's
- [00:38:56.310]out in the field where we're
- [00:38:58.770]trying to
- [00:38:59.260]understand specifically ag
- [00:39:01.810]producers colorectal cancer
- [00:39:04.420]screening practices we have
- [00:39:06.950]collected quite
- [00:39:08.220]a bit of data so far but we see
- [00:39:10.470]a gap in our age brackets and
- [00:39:12.530]we'd like to fill that gap
- [00:39:14.610]bracket
- [00:39:15.260]could extension personnel help
- [00:39:17.870]us recruit people to take this
- [00:39:20.330]survey? So we had three
- [00:39:24.120]opportunities
- [00:39:24.740]that were kind of really
- [00:39:26.280]stacked on top of each other.
- [00:39:28.300]And we had to figure out one,
- [00:39:30.320]how do we, how do we exchange,
- [00:39:32.810]like, how do we charge for our
- [00:39:35.210]services? How do we do that?
- [00:39:37.880]And then how much should it
- [00:39:39.640]cost? And it doesn't, and I
- [00:39:41.650]remember calling John kind of
- [00:39:43.640]in the first
- [00:39:44.480]throes of this, like, I have no
- [00:39:47.340]idea how much to charge UNMC.
- [00:39:50.330]Do we, like for the, for the
- [00:39:52.440]survey,
- [00:39:52.800]do we charge by the number of
- [00:39:54.980]surveys we get completed? Do we
- [00:39:57.680]figure out, like, do we just
- [00:39:59.900]ask two or three educators to
- [00:40:01.610]do it? And then the money goes
- [00:40:03.410]into their cost savings. Is
- [00:40:05.890]this
- [00:40:06.200]somehow an MVP thing? It, we
- [00:40:09.320]went through kind of six months
- [00:40:11.950]of like, how much,
- [00:40:14.300]how much is the cost of the
- [00:40:14.300]survey? And then we had to
- [00:40:14.310]figure out, like, how much is
- [00:40:14.320]the cost of
- [00:40:14.460]the survey? And then we had to
- [00:40:14.880]figure out, like, how much is
- [00:40:15.290]our time actually worth? How
- [00:40:17.340]much do
- [00:40:17.740]we need to charge in order to
- [00:40:19.230]make it worth it on the
- [00:40:20.390]business center side of things?
- [00:40:22.260]And then how
- [00:40:24.460]do we transfer the money? And
- [00:40:26.540]just like John said, it really,
- [00:40:28.780]the, the first answer I got,
- [00:40:30.840]I called Alicia Hoth and I was
- [00:40:32.340]like, I, I don't know, help.
- [00:40:34.010]And she's like, well, it
- [00:40:35.350]depends
- [00:40:35.960]where, what is the source of UNMC's
- [00:40:38.360]funding? How are they paying
- [00:40:40.440]for it? Because that's going to
- [00:40:44.440]we can take their money. And so
- [00:40:46.920]Alicia and Sarah, if you have,
- [00:40:49.130]so if there's one, if there's
- [00:40:51.140]one
- [00:40:51.340]lesson to bring home to
- [00:40:53.440]everybody, it's just like John
- [00:40:56.730]said, I wish, I think I took
- [00:40:59.160]the,
- [00:40:59.840]the ideas at the beginning was
- [00:41:02.100]like, okay, everybody's super
- [00:41:04.630]busy. Let's try to get as
- [00:41:06.860]much done through email as
- [00:41:08.220]possible. What I wish I would
- [00:41:09.740]have done is pulled everybody
- [00:41:11.820]into a
- [00:41:14.420]meeting and pulled the business
- [00:41:16.850]center into the meeting, both
- [00:41:18.990]on our side and on UNMC side
- [00:41:21.260]from the very beginning. Cause
- [00:41:23.150]I think that would have helped
- [00:41:24.850]because we would get together
- [00:41:26.640]in
- [00:41:26.820]meetings to talk about the idea
- [00:41:28.180]and like, Hey, here are the
- [00:41:29.440]educators that we think would
- [00:41:30.750]be
- [00:41:30.960]useful to buy out their time to
- [00:41:32.540]do this cancer prevention
- [00:41:33.850]research. And here's, we kind
- [00:41:35.740]of got
- [00:41:36.140]into the weeds on the like
- [00:41:37.660]programmatic side, but we
- [00:41:39.320]needed to get into the weeds on
- [00:41:41.130]the business
- [00:41:42.020]center side. And I learned
- [00:41:44.400]quickly, like we needed our
- [00:41:46.010]side and their side to talk to
- [00:41:47.470]each other because I think that's,
- [00:41:49.420]and then, and then we were
- [00:41:50.800]trying to do the rest through
- [00:41:52.250]email and we were
- [00:41:53.200]misunderstanding each
- [00:41:54.240]other. And I was getting
- [00:41:55.340]confused because three projects
- [00:41:56.740]were going on at the same time.
- [00:41:58.090]They all
- [00:41:58.660]three need something, needed
- [00:42:00.260]something different. And so I
- [00:42:01.940]think that was the lesson I
- [00:42:03.260]learned the
- [00:42:03.960]most and that I have sworn up
- [00:42:05.340]and down to Alicia and Sarah
- [00:42:06.860]that I will do from now on. I
- [00:42:08.230]will learn
- [00:42:08.860]my lesson and that business
- [00:42:10.240]center needs to be involved
- [00:42:11.620]from the beginning on both
- [00:42:12.940]sides. Alicia,
- [00:42:14.380]what, what, what can you add?
- [00:42:16.100]Jennifer, I think you kind of
- [00:42:21.100]captured it very well in that.
- [00:42:23.520]And, and we don't necessarily,
- [00:42:25.140]when you're, when you're flushing
- [00:42:27.240]out those initial ideas, a lot
- [00:42:29.420]of times just getting to like,
- [00:42:31.620]what is it that you want to do?
- [00:42:33.350]Who's going to be involved?
- [00:42:35.050]Those can all be kind of have,
- [00:42:38.190]you can
- [00:42:38.340]have those conversations
- [00:42:39.500]absolutely. And then bring us
- [00:42:40.920]in and say, here's what we want
- [00:42:42.270]to do. I also
- [00:42:44.360]think that getting us in
- [00:42:46.210]contact with their, their
- [00:42:48.390]business staff, their offices
- [00:42:50.660]sponsored programs,
- [00:42:51.920]whoever it may be is often, it's
- [00:42:54.410]very, it's kind of difficult to
- [00:42:56.870]navigate who we need to be
- [00:42:58.820]talking
- [00:42:59.240]to as well. But if you, if you
- [00:43:01.320]bring us in, we can definitely
- [00:43:03.410]help figure all of that out.
- [00:43:05.540]And then
- [00:43:05.860]looking at John's spreadsheet
- [00:43:07.830]on, on how to, to determine
- [00:43:09.650]programmatic costs, we have to
- [00:43:11.900]pull that
- [00:43:12.200]into a whole different spread.
- [00:43:14.340]And I think that's, I think
- [00:43:14.340]that's really important. And I
- [00:43:14.340]think that's
- [00:43:14.340]one of the things that we can
- [00:43:14.360]do. And I think that's one of
- [00:43:14.380]the things that we can do. And
- [00:43:14.400]I think
- [00:43:14.580]spreadsheet for offices
- [00:43:16.250]sponsored programs. So that's
- [00:43:19.600]also, you know, to, to
- [00:43:21.290]translate that
- [00:43:22.380]into what is needed and how
- [00:43:24.200]that's going to flush out on
- [00:43:26.120]the backside for management
- [00:43:28.140]and SAP. Cause that's really
- [00:43:30.380]how that aligns. So, you know,
- [00:43:32.980]even if you are using that
- [00:43:34.890]spreadsheet
- [00:43:35.200]to, to, to determine what your
- [00:43:37.550]program costs are to, to, I
- [00:43:39.630]mean, show that to me, I can
- [00:43:41.820]help
- [00:43:42.120]kind of just determine how that's
- [00:43:43.850]going to, you know, how that's
- [00:43:44.320]going to, you know, how that's
- [00:43:44.320]going to look within the
- [00:43:45.350]overall budget for your, for
- [00:43:46.630]your program ask. But yeah, I
- [00:43:48.810]think
- [00:43:49.180]Gentry, I appreciate it. I, I
- [00:43:51.320]love the message. Please bring
- [00:43:53.450]us in early. So you don't start
- [00:43:56.320]heading down a pathway that we
- [00:43:57.850]have to completely reverse in
- [00:43:59.480]the end.
- [00:44:00.020]Because I would, I was just
- [00:44:02.600]going to interject Gentry that
- [00:44:05.550]I think one of the lessons that
- [00:44:07.820]I
- [00:44:08.020]appreciate from this effort, my
- [00:44:10.190]own experience as well, is that
- [00:44:14.300]you just save a lot more time
- [00:44:16.760]when you engage the business
- [00:44:19.340]center earlier rather than
- [00:44:22.280]later,
- [00:44:22.660]because they can help you
- [00:44:23.930]navigate some of these
- [00:44:25.080]difficult questions that you
- [00:44:26.600]might have.
- [00:44:27.420]And instead of, you know, going
- [00:44:29.310]down an avenue, that's really
- [00:44:31.320]not going to work
- [00:44:32.500]for what you're trying to do.
- [00:44:35.370]You're much better off, you
- [00:44:38.070]know, kind of after you've
- [00:44:39.600]fleshed out what you want to do
- [00:44:41.600]in, you know, kind of general
- [00:44:43.680]terms,
- [00:44:44.280]and then talk to them and say,
- [00:44:46.270]okay, how can we make this
- [00:44:48.010]happen? And what does that look
- [00:44:51.410]like?
- [00:44:51.740]And then how, you know, how can
- [00:44:53.850]we manage the money side of it,
- [00:44:55.900]you know, for lack of a better
- [00:44:57.980]descriptor. So I think that's a
- [00:45:00.090]critical thing to always
- [00:45:01.690]remember, you know, the
- [00:45:03.650]business center
- [00:45:04.540]people are our colleagues.
- [00:45:07.010]There are partners in this.
- [00:45:09.880]They are not obstacles. They're
- [00:45:12.360]going to,
- [00:45:14.260]back when I first started in
- [00:45:16.280]these roles back at LSU, one of
- [00:45:18.540]the business people said, the
- [00:45:21.240]first
- [00:45:21.480]chair was there, she said, my
- [00:45:23.040]job is to keep you out of jail.
- [00:45:24.560]And I've never forgotten that.
- [00:45:26.870]And
- [00:45:27.080]that's basically a kind of a
- [00:45:29.520]blunt way of saying, helping
- [00:45:32.200]you comply with all the rules,
- [00:45:34.950]which are
- [00:45:35.900]constantly changing. And what
- [00:45:38.540]you think might be the case for
- [00:45:40.900]a particular project based on
- [00:45:43.320]one you just completed may not
- [00:45:45.740]be at all the way you need to
- [00:45:47.850]process things because of the
- [00:45:50.360]source
- [00:45:50.720]of funding and what you're
- [00:45:52.450]trying to do. So always be
- [00:45:53.980]mindful of that, that when you've
- [00:45:56.160]done something
- [00:45:56.620]one way, and you think you can
- [00:45:58.780]do the same thing, the same way
- [00:46:01.030]with another funder, well, that's
- [00:46:03.820]not
- [00:46:04.020]always the case. So always work
- [00:46:05.550]with the business folks. Anyway,
- [00:46:07.540]sorry, Gentry, you were saying.
- [00:46:09.100]This is going to happen here
- [00:46:10.870]real quick. Is that,
- [00:46:13.320]oh, the program spreadsheet,
- [00:46:14.920]John, that you've created is a
- [00:46:16.690]really great way to kind of
- [00:46:18.320]have like
- [00:46:18.820]that pocket idea, elevator
- [00:46:20.660]speech, whatever, right? Like,
- [00:46:23.100]so how much does your program
- [00:46:24.950]cost? Oh,
- [00:46:25.780]it costs $60,000, right?
- [00:46:27.290]Because you've done that work
- [00:46:28.370]and figured it out. A couple of
- [00:46:30.880]things,
- [00:46:31.720]though, to add, though, is if
- [00:46:32.980]it does go through sponsored
- [00:46:34.130]programs, and there's a couple
- [00:46:35.430]of key
- [00:46:35.820]things that require it to kick
- [00:46:37.310]over into sponsored programs,
- [00:46:38.800]such as if we have to have a
- [00:46:39.980]signed
- [00:46:40.440]agreement, if they come from a
- [00:46:41.980]federal source.
- [00:46:43.320]Um, is there anything related
- [00:46:45.260]to intellectual property? Like,
- [00:46:47.580]what if you are co-creating a
- [00:46:49.440]curriculum with an industry
- [00:46:51.360]partner, and now you want to
- [00:46:53.280]talk about how you're going to
- [00:46:55.280]split
- [00:46:55.720]the rights to that? That is
- [00:46:57.950]something that should be
- [00:46:59.780]negotiated with the office of
- [00:47:02.190]sponsored
- [00:47:02.420]programs and not between
- [00:47:04.530]yourself and the industry
- [00:47:05.930]partner. Other things, like any
- [00:47:08.420]other compliance
- [00:47:09.260]approval. So when we talk about
- [00:47:10.860]evaluation, for example, if the,
- [00:47:13.320]IRB is involved in any way in
- [00:47:14.900]your project, that also needs
- [00:47:16.530]to be put into sponsored
- [00:47:17.780]programs. So I
- [00:47:18.940]know we've been kind of talking
- [00:47:20.890]a little bit about evaluation
- [00:47:22.790]and UNMC and just being real
- [00:47:24.620]mindful of
- [00:47:25.380]that. Um, we do have a, an
- [00:47:27.930]abbreviated process, uh, to
- [00:47:30.730]exchange information between
- [00:47:33.550]the two sister
- [00:47:34.700]campuses that, um, that we don't
- [00:47:37.160]have for other, like, other
- [00:47:39.270]institutions. So, um, I mean,
- [00:47:41.810]we,
- [00:47:42.040]we provide the same information.
- [00:47:43.320]But it's in a kind of different
- [00:47:45.550]format, uh, because we share a
- [00:47:47.740]lot of that same information
- [00:47:49.000]already. Um, but to know that F&A
- [00:47:51.840]costs may be applied. So if you
- [00:47:54.830]think your project is worth
- [00:47:56.520]60,000, if I, if we have to
- [00:47:58.900]charge F&A, it's going to be a
- [00:48:00.660]lot higher than that. And
- [00:48:02.260]sometimes that
- [00:48:02.920]can kind of cause a roadblock,
- [00:48:05.070]um, when we get down to the end
- [00:48:06.920]of, yep, we're finally going to
- [00:48:09.580]get this going forward. And
- [00:48:11.160]then we say, Hey, we have to
- [00:48:12.640]add,
- [00:48:13.320]you know, $12,000 on here. And
- [00:48:16.100]now all of a sudden it's like,
- [00:48:17.900]oh, whoa, whoa, that wasn't
- [00:48:19.740]included in our original budget.
- [00:48:21.980]Um, so please, yep. Like
- [00:48:23.520]everyone is saying, just engage
- [00:48:25.610]the
- [00:48:25.720]business center. Um, however
- [00:48:27.540]that might look, uh, for
- [00:48:29.010]whichever unit that you are
- [00:48:30.450]involved in,
- [00:48:31.280]just to help kind of navigate
- [00:48:32.590]some of those waters. So we can
- [00:48:34.070]try to make it as easy as we
- [00:48:35.250]can
- [00:48:35.440]on the backend. Yeah. And Sarah,
- [00:48:37.630]that's what happened to us is
- [00:48:39.310]that we were like, okay,
- [00:48:40.700]well, we'll just figure out for
- [00:48:42.170]the, for cancer.
- [00:48:43.320]For buying an educator's time.
- [00:48:44.480]Okay. Well, here's how much do
- [00:48:45.980]they make? So here's,
- [00:48:47.520]and here's the percentage we
- [00:48:48.970]want. And so that's how much it
- [00:48:50.650]should cost. And then we went
- [00:48:52.280]down
- [00:48:52.500]four or five, you know, email
- [00:48:53.980]exchanges and business center
- [00:48:55.480]got involved and they're like,
- [00:48:57.140]hold, well, hold on. We've got
- [00:48:59.170]to do F&A. And then they were
- [00:49:00.920]upset because F&A hadn't been
- [00:49:02.580]included at the beginning and
- [00:49:04.620]all the benefit rates and that
- [00:49:06.660]type of things, you know,
- [00:49:08.640]things
- [00:49:09.060]that we don't, you know, we
- [00:49:10.610]look at salary and we say, okay,
- [00:49:12.420]you know, they,
- [00:49:13.320]we make, you know, X amount of
- [00:49:14.960]year, you know, X amount of
- [00:49:16.420]years, but how do I figure out
- [00:49:18.060]what
- [00:49:18.240]the benefits? Some people
- [00:49:19.870]charge more or some people have
- [00:49:21.630]a higher estimate. Some people
- [00:49:23.540]don't,
- [00:49:24.160]you know, so there's just a lot
- [00:49:25.980]of nuance that's kind of
- [00:49:27.210]calculated and kept in mind.
- [00:49:29.040]Right. And all three of these
- [00:49:30.880]were also different because
- [00:49:32.720]they were paying for it in
- [00:49:34.080]three different
- [00:49:34.840]ways. And so they are, one was
- [00:49:37.290]philanthropic funds that they're
- [00:49:39.950]paying for. Another was
- [00:49:43.320]money that they had received
- [00:49:45.300]from the state legislature.
- [00:49:47.320]Another again was
- [00:49:48.630]administrative
- [00:49:49.680]cost. I forget exactly. It came
- [00:49:51.990]directly from the, from the
- [00:49:53.710]director. And so all three of
- [00:49:55.810]those
- [00:49:56.040]determined the, like the rates
- [00:49:58.780]on, on different parts of the
- [00:50:01.240]project. And so anyway, all of
- [00:50:04.050]this
- [00:50:04.540]to say is that I have, I've had
- [00:50:07.140]a baptism by fire of how to
- [00:50:09.520]navigate these sorts of odd
- [00:50:12.190]relationships,
- [00:50:13.320]where, and, and I, and I hope
- [00:50:15.810]that this has started something
- [00:50:18.430]where other organizations
- [00:50:20.740]are going to start seeing
- [00:50:22.470]extension in this way, that
- [00:50:24.450]instead of hiring, you know,
- [00:50:26.610]three or four
- [00:50:27.600]people to run the education arm
- [00:50:29.190]of their organization, they
- [00:50:30.740]could instead just purchase
- [00:50:32.300]some of our time. And so
- [00:50:34.190]hopefully these sorts of
- [00:50:36.080]partnerships will be become
- [00:50:38.240]more commonplace
- [00:50:39.640]and extension as the state
- [00:50:41.710]continues to see how you,
- [00:50:43.320]how successful we are and what
- [00:50:44.860]an incredible infrastructure we
- [00:50:46.320]have across the state and our
- [00:50:48.360]ability, our, our master
- [00:50:50.810]ability to educate the public.
- [00:50:53.800]I also, funny enough, as we
- [00:50:56.040]were talking,
- [00:50:56.760]I got an email from one of our
- [00:50:58.990]extension educators asking the
- [00:51:01.860]cancer center or excuse me,
- [00:51:04.120]the public health faculty, like,
- [00:51:06.010]Hey, I could use some help,
- [00:51:07.510]like developing a survey. Would
- [00:51:09.400]you be willing to like, kind of
- [00:51:10.730]sit down and, and mentor me
- [00:51:11.900]just a little bit?
- [00:51:13.320]We've been getting some, and so
- [00:51:14.750]I was like, Hey, that's really
- [00:51:16.700]nice that it's now becoming
- [00:51:18.420]also some reciprocal that there's
- [00:51:20.320]some mentoring relationships
- [00:51:22.050]possibly starting because of
- [00:51:23.680]this opportunity. Kathleen, I
- [00:51:25.240]see you on mute.
- [00:51:26.840]John, go ahead. You were going
- [00:51:28.650]to chime in before.
- [00:51:29.740]Yeah, I was just going to
- [00:51:31.870]follow up on what Gentry said
- [00:51:33.680]that there are, I know in
- [00:51:35.800]several
- [00:51:36.160]program areas, probably all of
- [00:51:38.050]our program areas, there are
- [00:51:39.800]examples of just that Gentry
- [00:51:41.500]where states.
- [00:51:43.000]State or federal agencies,
- [00:51:45.120]nonprofits, et cetera, have
- [00:51:47.520]essentially tapped our shoulder
- [00:51:50.780]to help
- [00:51:51.840]deliver programming because
- [00:51:53.890]they don't have the capacity,
- [00:51:55.810]they, whatever it may be,
- [00:51:58.270]personnel,
- [00:51:58.680]et cetera. So they rely on our
- [00:52:00.600]expertise to help them develop
- [00:52:02.860]and deliver that program to
- [00:52:04.940]either
- [00:52:05.420]internal stakeholders. So
- [00:52:07.200]people within their own
- [00:52:08.630]organization or agency or
- [00:52:10.650]external stakeholders.
- [00:52:11.920]So there's,
- [00:52:12.680]there's lots of examples of
- [00:52:14.350]that. And I, I, you know, would
- [00:52:17.190]just encourage folks to share
- [00:52:18.520]those
- [00:52:18.920]with others outside of the
- [00:52:21.250]program area so that others can
- [00:52:23.910]see, oh, there are
- [00:52:25.600]opportunities for me
- [00:52:27.320]to collaborate with other
- [00:52:29.180]agencies who know the great
- [00:52:31.120]work that we're doing in our
- [00:52:33.060]program area
- [00:52:34.040]and can leverage our expertise.
- [00:52:37.230]And it'll help cover the costs
- [00:52:39.420]of maybe our salary, maybe some
- [00:52:41.800]of
- [00:52:42.360]these other opportunities that
- [00:52:43.330]we're doing in our program area,
- [00:52:44.360]like a salary for an, an
- [00:52:45.270]associate or whatever it may be.
- [00:52:47.280]And so just be thinking broadly
- [00:52:48.970]about those opportunities,
- [00:52:50.710]because there's a lot of them
- [00:52:52.360]that have happened
- [00:52:53.440]with extension, and there are
- [00:52:55.020]many that will happen.
- [00:52:56.480]So Kathleen.
- [00:52:57.780]Yeah, all great, great feedback
- [00:53:01.150]and great ideas. And don't let
- [00:53:03.860]the, the process scare you away
- [00:53:07.080]from doing
- [00:53:07.600]these things. What we're hoping
- [00:53:09.140]to do is develop some models.
- [00:53:10.640]So this becomes pretty seamless.
- [00:53:12.040]And so we'll have like
- [00:53:13.600]different, oh, this looks like
- [00:53:15.910]this, and this is how we need
- [00:53:17.160]to progress.
- [00:53:17.800]And this looks like this. So
- [00:53:19.680]just because the first couple
- [00:53:21.490]of them might've taken longer
- [00:53:23.000]than
- [00:53:23.240]we thought, or you ran into
- [00:53:24.720]some things that never thought
- [00:53:26.420]of F&A. That's one of the
- [00:53:28.400]reasons we have
- [00:53:28.920]the spreadsheets. That's one of
- [00:53:30.550]the reasons we continue to have
- [00:53:32.010]discussions like this,
- [00:53:33.160]because to Gentry's point, once
- [00:53:35.090]you do it, once you, you get,
- [00:53:36.840]you get it and you're like, oh,
- [00:53:38.160]okay, this is what we need to
- [00:53:39.300]do. And our business center is,
- [00:53:41.720]is there to help us just a
- [00:53:43.570]couple of things. One is we are
- [00:53:46.780]working on the link to that,
- [00:53:48.840]that guide, what I was going to
- [00:53:50.750]do. And then I was quickly
- [00:53:52.630]reminded because John said
- [00:53:53.720]something,
- [00:53:54.120]and I thought, do not do that.
- [00:53:55.620]I was going to just download it
- [00:53:57.080]and attach it to all of you,
- [00:53:58.360]just like to make it quick. And
- [00:53:59.690]I thought, you know what, we
- [00:54:00.550]just changed that June, 2025,
- [00:54:02.920]and we're going to probably
- [00:54:04.070]change again in August, 2025.
- [00:54:05.880]And I don't want any of you to
- [00:54:07.400]have this document that looks
- [00:54:10.030]pretty current.
- [00:54:11.400]And isn't so we will fix that
- [00:54:14.200]link, but that's just things
- [00:54:16.040]are changing quickly. And so
- [00:54:17.720]always, always check, never
- [00:54:19.660]assume, you know, the most
- [00:54:21.450]current information because
- [00:54:23.400]things do change.
- [00:54:25.320]Another piece I wanted to share
- [00:54:28.470]with you, what you have done
- [00:54:31.640]related to
- [00:54:33.720]earning dollars, just to John
- [00:54:36.640]alluded to this before, but I
- [00:54:39.460]wanted to show it
- [00:54:41.080]to you just for reminder, to
- [00:54:42.810]see your progress, because I
- [00:54:44.820]really think that this is
- [00:54:46.060]amazing.
- [00:54:46.760]Okay. We are talking less than
- [00:54:48.840]a year ago, right? We started
- [00:54:51.270]doing this in July of 2024. So
- [00:54:56.360]in the
- [00:54:56.760]last year, we've now got three
- [00:54:58.490]quarters of data. This is
- [00:55:00.050]exactly what John said. You can
- [00:55:01.980]see some
- [00:55:02.840]groups are doing more at
- [00:55:04.790]different times of year. And as
- [00:55:07.640]content areas, you're going to
- [00:55:09.400]start being
- [00:55:09.800]able to track that a little bit
- [00:55:11.190]more, like, okay, we know this
- [00:55:12.590]is a high time for us. We know
- [00:55:13.880]this
- [00:55:14.120]is a lower time, but you're
- [00:55:16.050]starting to be really
- [00:55:17.010]consistent. You're starting to
- [00:55:19.330]increase that
- [00:55:20.040]amount and you're starting to
- [00:55:21.200]get some pretty good chunks of
- [00:55:22.350]change. And I know there's
- [00:55:24.760]examples of
- [00:55:25.480]how the different program areas
- [00:55:27.190]are using those dollars. Just
- [00:55:29.270]wanted to remind you of that
- [00:55:30.280]and
- [00:55:30.360]say congratulations once again.
- [00:55:37.730]Okay. Oh, thank you, Ruby. The
- [00:55:39.640]guide was updated last week. So
- [00:55:41.240]watch for the email with more
- [00:55:42.620]details on the guide. Perfect.
- [00:55:45.080]Any other questions that you
- [00:55:48.360]have
- [00:55:48.600]for today? Thanks so much to
- [00:55:51.220]John and the team for putting
- [00:55:53.720]together those spreadsheets and
- [00:55:55.880]continuing to refine them. What
- [00:55:57.320]we're finding with everybody
- [00:55:58.580]who uses them, they're saying,
- [00:56:00.040]oh, I didn't think about this
- [00:56:01.440]before, or I hadn't been
- [00:56:02.620]thinking about this in the same
- [00:56:04.200]way.
- [00:56:04.440]And it's just part of doing
- [00:56:06.300]business. As you think about
- [00:56:08.390]those costs, other orgs are
- [00:56:10.620]charging those
- [00:56:11.240]same costs. Okay. They may call
- [00:56:12.790]them different things. They may
- [00:56:14.310]put them in different places
- [00:56:16.040]and in their overall fees, but
- [00:56:18.250]those costs are included. So
- [00:56:20.330]don't feel shy or bad or
- [00:56:24.680]anything about charging those
- [00:56:26.460]things. It's just getting a
- [00:56:28.140]real handle on what actual
- [00:56:29.720]costs of programs are. So just
- [00:56:33.710]two things I wanted to mention,
- [00:56:35.080]Kathleen, before I think you're
- [00:56:37.080]going
- [00:56:37.240]to mention what we're going to
- [00:56:39.520]be talking about in a couple of
- [00:56:41.770]weeks, is I think one of the
- [00:56:43.640]things
- [00:56:43.800]I want to emphasize through
- [00:56:45.410]this conversation, and
- [00:56:46.900]including Gentry, Alicia, and
- [00:56:48.850]Sarah in it, was that
- [00:56:50.040]I am open to talking about and
- [00:56:52.500]having discussions about other
- [00:56:55.300]efforts that you might
- [00:56:57.260]undertake that
- [00:56:59.400]may or may not fit within one
- [00:57:01.160]of the tools that we have
- [00:57:02.670]available and see how it might
- [00:57:04.600]work for
- [00:57:05.080]your particular situation. The
- [00:57:07.510]second thing I wanted to
- [00:57:09.170]mention also is that, as Sarah
- [00:57:11.880]and
- [00:57:11.960]Alicia also indicated, OSP has
- [00:57:15.080]other spreadsheet tools that
- [00:57:17.980]are there designed to help
- [00:57:20.600]primarily
- [00:57:22.040]researchers, but research and
- [00:57:24.250]extension efforts as well, to
- [00:57:26.370]fully capture the costs of all
- [00:57:28.400]aspects
- [00:57:29.080]of a particular project. And so
- [00:57:31.490]those are more involved and
- [00:57:33.480]have specific information that
- [00:57:37.480]you
- [00:57:37.640]need to be aware of when you're
- [00:57:39.250]developing a program, in
- [00:57:40.700]particular when you're
- [00:57:42.000]submitting
- [00:57:42.760]it through a sponsored program.
- [00:57:45.660]So just be mindful of that as
- [00:57:47.950]well. So thanks to both Alicia
- [00:57:50.450]and Sarah
- [00:57:50.920]for reminding us all of that.
- [00:57:54.240]Kathleen? Perfect. So quite
- [00:57:56.040]into two weeks from now, we're
- [00:57:57.720]going to be spending some time
- [00:57:58.760]talking a little bit about
- [00:57:59.820]projects that have been going
- [00:58:00.910]through this process and have
- [00:58:02.960]been doing so
- [00:58:03.560]successfully. Maybe some snags
- [00:58:05.320]they went through along the way,
- [00:58:07.020]what they've learned, so that
- [00:58:08.510]you
- [00:58:08.600]can continue to evolve your
- [00:58:10.250]skill set. Thank you, thank you,
- [00:58:13.750]thank you to all for being a
- [00:58:16.190]part of it
- [00:58:16.760]and for contributing the great
- [00:58:18.430]work that you do. But most
- [00:58:19.940]importantly, thanks for making
- [00:58:21.800]the lives
- [00:58:22.280]of Nebraskans better by the
- [00:58:23.890]work that you do. Have a great
- [00:58:26.130]Monday. If you have questions,
- [00:58:27.740]let us know.
- [00:58:28.440]So, bye.
