- [00:00:15.510]going on and it is real. I have
- [00:00:17.890]some
- [00:00:18.460]real life experiences to share
- [00:00:20.470]with you today.

- [00:00:32.900]All right. So my name is Dina
- [00:00:40.220]Noe. I work at the University
- [00:00:43.090]of Nebraska Federal Credit
- [00:00:44.980]Union. I really appreciate that
- [00:00:47.500]Annalise invited us to do a
- [00:00:49.270]challenge on financial
- [00:00:51.020]literacy. It isn't something
- [00:00:53.380]that everyone puts as their
- [00:00:55.380]priority, but it does add to
- [00:00:57.540]the
- [00:00:57.640]stress of our everyday lives.
- [00:00:59.730]And if we don't pay attention
- [00:01:01.570]to it, it can really affect
- [00:01:03.460]our wellness. So I think it
- [00:01:04.990]fits great with Campus Rec and
- [00:01:06.640]everything that they do. And
- [00:01:08.400]it's a perfect challenge. So
- [00:01:10.410]today we're doing resistance
- [00:01:12.350]training on scams. And I'll
- [00:01:14.270]just
- [00:01:14.720]go ahead and get started. So
- [00:01:17.420]our agenda today is different
- [00:01:20.130]ways scams
- [00:01:21.200]are initiated. Tips to help
- [00:01:23.100]protect your identity. How does
- [00:01:25.310]information get
- [00:01:26.460]shared? Scams. How to protect
- [00:01:28.300]yourself. Freezing your credit.
- [00:01:30.520]And then we'll do questions
- [00:01:31.460]afterwards through chat. So I
- [00:01:33.420]always like to start my
- [00:01:36.660]seminars and talk about the
- [00:01:37.820]difference
- [00:01:38.120]between what is identity theft
- [00:01:40.130]and fraud. So identity theft
- [00:01:41.980]occurs when someone tries
- [00:01:43.900]to impersonate you. They get
- [00:01:45.720]your information, such as your
- [00:01:47.610]social security number, your
- [00:01:49.460]date of birth, maybe some
- [00:01:51.100]information on your driver's
- [00:01:52.980]license, your address, all
- [00:01:54.840]those
- [00:01:55.280]particulars. And then they
- [00:01:57.950]impersonate you when trying to
- [00:02:00.720]get credit or even insurance.
- [00:02:04.040]So that
- [00:02:04.480]is a lot harder to get fixed.
- [00:02:06.750]If somebody becomes you and
- [00:02:08.910]tries to get your credit, it is
- [00:02:11.660]something
- [00:02:11.820]you have to work to reverse.
- [00:02:13.570]The other thing that people
- [00:02:15.170]might confuse with identity
- [00:02:16.870]theft is fraud.
- [00:02:18.080]Fraud happens every day. We see
- [00:02:20.390]it on our credit cards. We see
- [00:02:22.530]it in other places. In that
- [00:02:24.500]case,
- [00:02:25.280]it's usually your financial
- [00:02:26.630]institution can help you out
- [00:02:27.980]with that. A credit breach
- [00:02:31.520]would be a good
- [00:02:32.020]example of fraud, where then we
- [00:02:34.030]can step in as a financial
- [00:02:35.590]institution and we can go ahead
- [00:02:37.320]and help
- [00:02:37.660]you. We have dispute rights. We
- [00:02:39.540]have chargeback rights. We have
- [00:02:41.360]all kinds of things that we can
- [00:02:43.020]do when it comes to your credit
- [00:02:45.150]card and fraud happening. So I
- [00:02:47.480]just want to let you know that
- [00:02:49.640]if you get into a situation
- [00:02:50.740]where you have that fraud, make
- [00:02:52.090]sure you contact your financial
- [00:02:53.500]institution. Same thing with
- [00:02:54.710]identity theft, though. You do
- [00:02:56.000]need to talk to your financial
- [00:02:57.200]institution if you're having
- [00:02:58.740]issues with that so that we can
- [00:03:00.280]see if we can help you get that
- [00:03:01.880]corrected. I have a short video
- [00:03:04.130]here I'm going to show quickly
- [00:03:06.130]regarding this. All right, I'm
- [00:03:22.260]going
- [00:03:22.320]to go ahead and play that.
- [00:03:23.500]Identity theft happens. It's an
- [00:03:29.100]unfortunate fact of modern life.
- [00:03:31.300]But there are certain steps you
- [00:03:32.800]can
- [00:03:32.980]take to help keep your personal
- [00:03:34.670]information from falling into
- [00:03:36.350]the wrong hands. Every day you
- [00:03:38.140]do
- [00:03:38.320]things to protect what's most
- [00:03:39.690]important to you. And you know
- [00:03:41.160]what? You do them almost
- [00:03:42.480]automatically.
- [00:03:43.060]Routine things like looking
- [00:03:44.880]both ways before you cross,
- [00:03:46.750]brushing your teeth, and buckling
- [00:03:50.140]your
- [00:03:50.340]seatbelt. Another routine to
- [00:03:51.470]get into is keeping your
- [00:03:52.230]personal information in check.
- [00:03:53.480]If you're
- [00:03:53.500]not sure what your personal
- [00:03:54.400]information is, you can use
- [00:03:55.290]your credit card and bank
- [00:03:56.120]statements.
- [00:03:56.360]Here are five easy ways you can
- [00:03:58.290]do it.
- [00:03:58.900]Read your credit card and bank
- [00:04:00.100]statements carefully and often.
- [00:04:02.640]Show your payment due dates. If
- [00:04:04.330]a bill doesn't show up when you
- [00:04:05.540]expect it, look into it.
- [00:04:07.720]Read the statements from your
- [00:04:08.980]health insurance plan. Make
- [00:04:10.340]sure the claims paid match the
- [00:04:12.020]care you got.
- [00:04:13.860]Shred any documents with
- [00:04:15.650]personal and financial
- [00:04:17.060]information.
- [00:04:18.620]Review each of your three
- [00:04:19.850]credit reports at least once a
- [00:04:21.280]year. It's easy and it's free.
- [00:04:23.500]And before you know it,
- [00:04:24.880]protecting your personal
- [00:04:26.440]information can be as routine
- [00:04:27.820]as locking your
- [00:04:28.680]doors at night.

- [00:05:06.310]a few of these that the video
- [00:05:08.360]may or
- [00:05:09.380]may not have talked through.
- [00:05:11.400]One of them is, they said,
- [00:05:12.960]review your account statements.
- [00:05:15.300]I know that's
- [00:05:15.940]really hard for all of us. Most
- [00:05:17.860]of us get e-statements and we
- [00:05:19.550]might forget about the fact
- [00:05:21.220]that we should be looking those
- [00:05:21.530]over. So if you're not familiar

- [00:05:23.500]It might not be that I'm
- [00:05:24.740]reviewing my paper statement
- [00:05:26.400]that I get in the mail or even
- [00:05:28.000]maybe
- [00:05:28.340]my e-statement. It's important
- [00:05:30.980]to have some way, and what I
- [00:05:33.080]would suggest is online banking,
- [00:05:35.840]to go in, look at those
- [00:05:37.280]statements, and make sure that
- [00:05:39.430]there isn't something in there
- [00:05:41.340]that
- [00:05:41.740]you haven't done yourself. So
- [00:05:43.990]you can look over, try to see
- [00:05:45.820]if you have any charges that
- [00:05:47.970]you
- [00:05:48.120]question, or even look to see
- [00:05:50.260]if there are fees that you
- [00:05:52.140]deny.
- [00:05:53.500]And if you have any charges
- [00:05:54.560]that you didn't expect, so that
- [00:05:55.490]is our way here at the
- [00:05:57.620]financial
- [00:05:57.760]institution to let you know
- [00:05:58.930]what's going on, but it is also
- [00:06:00.240]where your insurance company is
- [00:06:01.830]letting
- [00:06:02.020]you know what's going on. It's
- [00:06:03.230]also where your credit card
- [00:06:04.240]company is letting you know. So
- [00:06:05.920]those
- [00:06:06.120]are very important things to
- [00:06:07.210]look at. I'm going to cover
- [00:06:08.820]credit reports later on in the
- [00:06:10.630]seminar,
- [00:06:11.360]and we can talk through why it's
- [00:06:12.750]important to look at those.
- [00:06:14.110]Health insurance is another one
- [00:06:16.720]that we are seeing a lot of uptick
- [00:06:18.780]in fraud, so it's important to
- [00:06:20.770]keep track of that.

- [00:06:22.460]deny.
- [00:06:22.560]They talked about shredding. As
- [00:06:24.690]you know, there's a lot of
- [00:06:26.950]places around Lincoln during
- [00:06:29.420]the spring,
- [00:06:29.900]right after we do our taxes,
- [00:06:31.520]that you can have free shred
- [00:06:33.060]days. So please think about
- [00:06:34.800]taking
- [00:06:35.080]advantage of it. One of the
- [00:06:36.680]things that I do is I just put
- [00:06:38.260]my documents that I think need
- [00:06:39.890]to be
- [00:06:40.360]shred. That does not include
- [00:06:42.350]newspapers. That does not
- [00:06:44.130]include an envelope. It
- [00:06:45.800]includes the things
- [00:06:46.940]that have your personal private
- [00:06:48.490]information on. So that would
- [00:06:50.020]include statements.
- [00:06:52.560]Go ahead and put those in a box,
- [00:06:54.230]and then you see that we have
- [00:06:55.720]these free shred days come up.
- [00:06:57.580]Take advantage of them, and
- [00:06:59.140]then you won't get piled up by
- [00:07:00.760]having a lot. Some people can
- [00:07:02.910]do that
- [00:07:03.300]at home, but it is harder to
- [00:07:04.910]shred each thing that you have
- [00:07:06.660]at home. You know, the shredder
- [00:07:08.760]doesn't
- [00:07:09.360]separate it the way it should.
- [00:07:11.310]I think it's just a good
- [00:07:12.580]practice to watch what's going
- [00:07:14.400]on
- [00:07:14.620]and find a shred day. So the
- [00:07:16.370]credit union has a shred day
- [00:07:18.060]every year, usually April or
- [00:07:19.890]May. But
- [00:07:21.520]many of you have accounts at
- [00:07:23.170]Union Bank, or maybe you have
- [00:07:24.960]an account at Pinnacle Bank.
- [00:07:26.940]Almost all of them have some
- [00:07:28.740]sort of shred day. So kind of
- [00:07:30.750]just watch their information
- [00:07:32.500]coming
- [00:07:32.820]on their website or an email,
- [00:07:34.670]and you can help yourself out
- [00:07:36.440]that way. I do also have on
- [00:07:39.080]here
- [00:07:39.680]to talk about passwords and
- [00:07:41.560]updating your passwords. I know
- [00:07:44.010]it's very difficult to keep
- [00:07:45.800]things going when it comes to
- [00:07:47.300]passwords. I don't know. I
- [00:07:49.050]think if all of us counted it
- [00:07:50.270]up, we'd say
- [00:07:50.940]like we have a million
- [00:07:51.900]passwords. And so what do we do?
- [00:07:53.570]We want to make them seem very
- [00:07:54.890]easy, so we
- [00:07:56.080]keep using the same one over
- [00:07:57.800]and over. I completely
- [00:07:59.370]understand doing something like
- [00:08:01.490]that, but when it
- [00:08:03.260]comes to your financial
- [00:08:04.420]information, it's important
- [00:08:05.990]that that password specifically
- [00:08:07.640]is something
- [00:08:08.380]different. I'd also encourage
- [00:08:10.010]you to think that way regarding
- [00:08:11.510]your email. What happens, you
- [00:08:14.410]know,
- [00:08:14.880]at a credit union or at a bank,
- [00:08:16.750]we have really good secure
- [00:08:18.400]systems. And for someone to
- [00:08:20.290]hack us,
- [00:08:20.860]get your information is very
- [00:08:23.070]unlikely, but through your
- [00:08:25.270]email or through a mobile app,
- [00:08:27.740]they have a lot more chance to
- [00:08:29.340]do that. So it's important to
- [00:08:31.060]keep those to be different from
- [00:08:32.950]what
- [00:08:33.100]you're using with your
- [00:08:34.160]financial institution. So I
- [00:08:36.200]have down here 10 strong rules
- [00:08:43.100]for keeping
- [00:08:43.660]safer passwords. I think the
- [00:08:46.020]first one here is pretty self-explanatory.
- [00:08:49.290]Don't share it with
- [00:08:50.780]anyone if possible. Try to
- [00:08:53.290]avoid things that someone can
- [00:08:55.480]find out about you. You know,
- [00:08:58.110]if you
- [00:08:58.940]use your pets on Facebook a lot,
- [00:09:00.710]you know, all of us like to
- [00:09:02.150]post a little bit about what
- [00:09:03.800]our cats
- [00:09:04.180]are doing for the day. You know,
- [00:09:05.630]they can pick up on that and
- [00:09:06.730]they can try to see if they can
- [00:09:07.980]get that information.
- [00:09:09.070]Unfortunately, birthdates,
- [00:09:10.470]anniversary, things like that
- [00:09:11.880]are also easily
- [00:09:12.880]found. So if you can avoid that,
- [00:09:15.490]most institutions that have
- [00:09:17.650]security, they will already ask
- [00:09:20.170]you to
- [00:09:20.700]have something that's at least
- [00:09:21.980]eight characters long. I'm
- [00:09:23.180]going to go over and show you
- [00:09:24.550]some
- [00:09:24.860]information about doing passphrases.
- [00:09:27.110]Passphrases are a really good
- [00:09:28.720]thing that we've all started to
- [00:09:30.300]change over the last... Anyway,
- [00:09:32.600]for us here, it was probably in
- [00:09:34.340]the last five years that we
- [00:09:35.980]went
- [00:09:36.300]away from having just a simple
- [00:09:38.280]password to using a passphrase.
- [00:09:40.640]It's easier to memorize and it's
- [00:09:42.540]harder for someone to break. Dina?

- [00:10:13.900]All right. So number six is
- [00:10:15.970]change your password for
- [00:10:17.800]sensitive websites over 60 to
- [00:10:20.540]every 60 to 90 days. And we do
- [00:10:22.730]not require, and most financial
- [00:10:24.570]institutions do not require you
- [00:10:25.820]to change your password every
- [00:10:27.070]60 to 90 days, but I think it's
- [00:10:28.720]a good practice if you could do
- [00:10:30.780]that.
- [00:10:31.100]Number seven is think your
- [00:10:32.640]password has been compromised,
- [00:10:34.570]change it immediately.
- [00:10:36.140]Make sure your security
- [00:10:37.870]questions are answered are hard
- [00:10:40.180]to guess. If your bank or webmail
- [00:10:42.780]offers
- [00:10:43.180]extra security, use that. So a
- [00:10:45.060]lot of us use multi-factor
- [00:10:46.520]authentication and it's
- [00:10:47.940]important that
- [00:10:48.860]we add that to any of our
- [00:10:49.240]passwords. So that's one of the
- [00:10:49.940]things that we want to make
- [00:10:50.260]sure we're
- [00:10:50.460]making sure that our passwords
- [00:10:53.080]are safe. All right. So I
- [00:10:58.920]talked a little bit about passphrases.
- [00:11:01.180]I'm going to show this quick
- [00:11:03.080]video to let you know a little
- [00:11:05.070]bit about
- [00:11:06.300]how you can use that instead of
- [00:11:08.280]a password.
- [00:11:20.380]I'm so sorry, just a second
- [00:11:37.840]here. I had that up so that we
- [00:11:40.840]wouldn't have any issues with
- [00:11:42.310]that,
- [00:11:42.560]and it's just on a different
- [00:11:43.690]screen. All right. Everyone see
- [00:11:49.380]that okay now? All right.
- [00:11:54.720]Choosing between a password or
- [00:11:57.520]passphrase, the latter is
- [00:11:59.690]better than the former, always.
- [00:12:02.480]Just to put everyone on the
- [00:12:04.050]same page, let's explain the
- [00:12:05.890]difference between a password
- [00:12:07.780]and a passphrase. A password is
- [00:12:10.270]commonly defined to be
- [00:12:11.980]a string of letters, numbers,
- [00:12:14.310]symbols, or all three. Whether
- [00:12:16.890]you chose the date you got that
- [00:12:18.760]gold ring or let a computer
- [00:12:20.450]build a random string,
- [00:12:22.350]passwords are relatively easy
- [00:12:24.020]to crack,
- [00:12:24.820]making all your accounts open
- [00:12:26.940]to a hack. So why not make it
- [00:12:28.960]longer? I can hear you say it.
- [00:12:31.460]Of course, that's a great way
- [00:12:33.060]to play it. The longer the
- [00:12:34.490]password, the stronger you've
- [00:12:36.200]made it,
- [00:12:36.840]but a random string is bound to
- [00:12:38.620]have your brain misplaced.
- [00:12:41.400]If you can't remember that
- [00:12:42.720]complicated selection, you'll
- [00:12:44.430]likely use the same ones and
- [00:12:46.240]lessen your
- [00:12:46.840]protection. Using a password
- [00:12:48.900]manager is absolutely quite
- [00:12:50.740]smart, but not all have access
- [00:12:53.380]and must
- [00:12:53.780]remember passwords by heart.
- [00:12:55.310]Passphrases are easier to keep
- [00:12:58.450]in your noggin, even when you
- [00:13:00.520]have different ones for each
- [00:13:02.080]login. Passphrases are a series
- [00:13:03.980]of words strung together. For
- [00:13:06.100]example,
- [00:13:06.580]gray clouds bring about stormy
- [00:13:08.740]weather. They can be complete
- [00:13:10.590]sentences,
- [00:13:11.380]with or without spaces. Have
- [00:13:13.850]symbols, letters in upper and
- [00:13:16.070]lower cases. Or simply be a
- [00:13:18.980]collection
- [00:13:19.340]of random words, such as chartreuse,
- [00:13:21.900]cookie, hummingbirds. Passphrase's
- [00:13:24.630]length is what
- [00:13:25.720]keeps it secure. The longer it
- [00:13:27.650]is, the stronger, for sure.
- [00:13:29.590]Unlike passwords, which are
- [00:13:31.350]forgotten
- [00:13:31.860]easily, a long passphrase can
- [00:13:33.790]be memorized speedily. The
- [00:13:35.990]second key to strength is
- [00:13:37.340]uniqueness. Using something
- [00:13:39.030]common will increase the
- [00:13:40.350]weakness.
- [00:13:41.380]Instead of all that glitters is
- [00:13:43.520]not gold, use something like spiky
- [00:13:45.840]pets are hard to hold.
- [00:13:47.180]Your passphrases should be easy
- [00:13:49.200]for you to remember, yet also
- [00:13:51.350]hard to guess by another staff
- [00:13:53.020]member. It should go without
- [00:13:54.840]saying, but let's make it clear.
- [00:13:57.150]For every device, personal, and
- [00:13:59.000]career,
- [00:13:59.820]please don't use the examples
- [00:14:01.090]that I've displayed here. Passphrases
- [00:14:03.390]are a much better way to secure
- [00:14:05.660]your information day to day.
- [00:14:07.410]They will give you peace of
- [00:14:08.900]mind every time you go online.
- [00:14:11.360]This is the end, but wait, don't
- [00:14:14.160]go. There's one more thing you
- [00:14:16.160]should know. Before updating
- [00:14:17.600]your passwords in any
- [00:14:18.910]application, always follow
- [00:14:20.740]policy at your organization.
- [00:14:41.340]All right. I found that video
- [00:14:45.700]really funny, how they rhyme
- [00:14:47.180]everything. That is talent,
- [00:14:48.680]I have to say. But it does help
- [00:14:50.580]you, does something
- [00:14:51.900]entertaining like that help you
- [00:14:54.000]remember why we need to use
- [00:14:55.480]passphrases instead of a
- [00:14:56.920]password. And I know once we
- [00:14:58.690]switched
- [00:14:59.000]here doing passphrases, I find
- [00:15:01.480]it a lot easier to memorize
- [00:15:03.490]that than a password that had
- [00:15:05.800]different characters in it and
- [00:15:07.310]had to remember that I capitalized
- [00:15:08.980]one of them, or that, you
- [00:15:11.320]know, I added a date to the end
- [00:15:13.450]of it with numbers. So I think
- [00:15:15.630]it's a really good idea when
- [00:15:18.020]thinking about what you're
- [00:15:19.310]going to do with that. Does
- [00:15:21.180]everybody see my screen? You
- [00:15:22.420]can just give
- [00:15:22.940]me a thumbs up. Okay, good. All
- [00:15:24.720]right. So identifying personal
- [00:15:26.170]information. We kind of talked
- [00:15:27.760]about
- [00:15:27.980]this a little bit about what it
- [00:15:29.850]is you want to keep secure.
- [00:15:31.690]This screen right here puts it
- [00:15:33.520]in a
- [00:15:33.900]good outline. So the most
- [00:15:35.900]important thing to keep secure
- [00:15:37.630]is that social security number.
- [00:15:39.840]That seems
- [00:15:40.620]to be the thing that you want
- [00:15:40.780]to keep secure. So if you're
- [00:15:40.950]going to keep secure, you want
- [00:15:41.140]to
- [00:15:41.300]keep that social security
- [00:15:41.480]number. So if you're going to
- [00:15:41.660]keep secure, you want to keep
- [00:15:41.840]that
- [00:15:42.000]social security number. So if
- [00:15:42.170]you're going to keep secure,
- [00:15:42.320]you want to keep that social
- [00:15:42.450]security

- [00:15:43.040]that's
- [00:15:43.080]something that is the one thing
- [00:15:45.760]that those people that are
- [00:15:48.030]fraudsters can focus on and can
- [00:15:50.780]use when
- [00:15:51.280]it comes to ID theft. When you
- [00:15:53.760]put that social security number
- [00:15:55.810]along with an address and a
- [00:15:57.780]name,
- [00:15:58.120]it becomes even worse that they

- [00:16:25.620]a good thing to add to your
- [00:16:27.320]passcode or add to your
- [00:16:29.000]passwords
- [00:16:29.900]is your social security number.
- [00:16:32.390]Motor vehicle operator license
- [00:16:35.060]number also is important to
- [00:16:36.780]keep safe. Your employment
- [00:16:38.300]information, maiden name of a
- [00:16:39.890]person's mother, just
- [00:16:41.260]because that is used. Although
- [00:16:42.890]I think we're turning away from
- [00:16:44.380]that a little more than we used
- [00:16:46.020]to. Charge card numbers, credit
- [00:16:48.200]cards, bank accounts, digital
- [00:16:50.370]signatures, all that
- [00:16:51.830]information
- [00:16:52.680]is important that you keep as
- [00:16:54.210]safe as possible. Beware of
- [00:16:57.320]these things that could cause
- [00:17:00.590]your
- [00:17:01.000]information to get out. Change
- [00:17:02.800]of address. Any place where you,
- [00:17:04.780]financial institution that you're
- [00:17:11.240]working with, any place where
- [00:17:12.020]you're working with, they
- [00:17:12.710]should be sending out something
- [00:17:13.360]when you
- [00:17:14.700]change the address. So just be
- [00:17:16.910]alert to that. Color of
- [00:17:19.990]authority. If everyone's been
- [00:17:21.580]watching the
- [00:17:22.080]news here lately, there has
- [00:17:23.800]been a ring right now going out
- [00:17:25.610]with someone calling that says
- [00:17:27.130]that
- [00:17:27.380]they're from the Lancaster
- [00:17:28.640]County Sheriff's Office and
- [00:17:29.960]that people have not shown up
- [00:17:31.280]for jury duty.
- [00:17:32.620]So that's what we mean by color
- [00:17:34.430]of authority. These individuals
- [00:17:36.520]that call and say they are the
- [00:17:41.220]sheriff or
- [00:17:41.220]the FBI, that's one we just had.
- [00:17:42.910]I'll go into that a little bit
- [00:17:44.310]when we talk about scams.
- [00:17:45.840]But they use that because it
- [00:17:47.790]adds to the pressure of the
- [00:17:49.660]situation, right? If somebody's
- [00:17:52.310]calling you
- [00:17:53.340]and they sound official and
- [00:17:54.740]they are telling you that you
- [00:17:56.190]didn't show up and you're going
- [00:17:57.900]to have
- [00:17:58.120]a fine, you just have a better,
- [00:17:59.800]you just tend to believe them,
- [00:18:01.430]right? Especially for us in
- [00:18:03.160]Nebraska,
- [00:18:03.580]we believe things when people
- [00:18:05.480]call. So just be careful of
- [00:18:07.170]that. We do a little bit of
- [00:18:08.790]talk,
- [00:18:09.360]but I don't see a lot of people
- [00:18:10.690]having,
- [00:18:11.200]issues when it comes to dumpster
- [00:18:12.640]diving or shoulder surfing. But
- [00:18:14.730]those are things just to look
- [00:18:16.840]out for
- [00:18:17.260]when you're trying to keep your
- [00:18:18.570]things safe. The thing that we
- [00:18:20.960]see more or something when it's
- [00:18:23.000]the,
- [00:18:23.100]I would consider the new way of
- [00:18:24.500]people getting involved. And
- [00:18:26.020]that one of them is skimming.
- [00:18:27.560]So this is a great photograph.
- [00:18:30.670]When you walk up to an ATM
- [00:18:32.960]machine, a lot of them have
- [00:18:35.600]that little
- [00:18:36.400]place where you put your card
- [00:18:37.780]in and it's got like a green
- [00:18:39.020]cover to it. This shows you
- [00:18:40.380]that a person
- [00:18:41.180]can create a skimmer. They put
- [00:18:44.710]right over that ATM machine and
- [00:18:46.830]then skim the cards. We haven't
- [00:18:49.880]had
- [00:18:50.080]that issue here at the credit
- [00:18:51.580]union, but it has come to
- [00:18:52.880]Nebraska. There have been gangs
- [00:18:54.810]that come
- [00:18:55.160]in. They attack a certain
- [00:18:57.010]number of machines in the city,
- [00:18:59.240]get their scamming done, pull
- [00:19:01.550]them off
- [00:19:02.180]and leave. It's a very quick
- [00:19:03.760]thing. We try to catch that as
- [00:19:05.240]financial institutions because
- [00:19:06.960]we
- [00:19:11.160]are not always something that
- [00:19:12.570]we can recognize. Our machines
- [00:19:14.140]are serviced every week. And
- [00:19:17.470]one of
- [00:19:18.020]the reasons we do that is just
- [00:19:19.380]to make sure this doesn't
- [00:19:20.570]happen. But you can get in a
- [00:19:21.920]good habit of
- [00:19:22.720]just kind of moving it a little
- [00:19:24.260]bit. And then you can see if
- [00:19:25.710]there's something attached to
- [00:19:27.330]it.
- [00:19:27.740]I think people also address
- [00:19:29.580]this when it comes to gas pumps
- [00:19:31.740]and just to look for that
- [00:19:33.290]sticker to
- [00:19:34.040]see that it's secure. But be
- [00:19:36.040]aware of your surroundings when
- [00:19:38.020]you're using an ATM machine.
- [00:19:41.140]Keep your ATM card. Keep your
- [00:19:43.740]pins secret. And then do not
- [00:19:46.240]account or visually display any
- [00:19:49.040]of
- [00:19:49.200]your money when you're using an
- [00:19:50.630]ATM. That's just some good tips
- [00:19:52.160]of advice.
- [00:19:52.860]Other ways that information
- [00:19:55.030]gets out, corrupt employees.
- [00:19:57.600]Again, I haven't heard a lot of
- [00:20:00.200]that
- [00:20:00.660]coming towards us. It's
- [00:20:01.700]something to watch for, but we
- [00:20:02.920]haven't seen it. Social
- [00:20:04.280]engineering,
- [00:20:05.120]though, we have had individuals
- [00:20:07.500]that have gotten caught up in
- [00:20:09.540]these kinds of things
- [00:20:11.120]dating sites. Facebook has now
- [00:20:14.470]become one of the top places
- [00:20:17.120]that having fraud occurred. We
- [00:20:20.000]had one
- [00:20:20.660]of our members get stuck with
- [00:20:22.260]thinking that they're getting
- [00:20:24.010]employment through Facebook.
- [00:20:25.760]And
- [00:20:26.000]then they had to, you know, pay
- [00:20:28.430]a certain amount of money in
- [00:20:30.530]order to be part of this job.
- [00:20:32.740]You know,
- [00:20:34.240]and there's just nothing we can
- [00:20:35.470]do after the fact when they get
- [00:20:36.650]their money involved with
- [00:20:37.820]that. So Facebook is something
- [00:20:39.310]to really watch out for. I'm
- [00:20:40.630]going to come back to that in a
- [00:20:41.100]little bit when we get to scams.
- [00:20:43.320]We've had students get involved
- [00:20:46.680]in dating site issues
- [00:20:49.760]where they get, you know, they
- [00:20:52.020]get really involved with the
- [00:20:54.030]person that's talking to them.
- [00:20:56.280]And they
- [00:20:56.560]think that this is a really,
- [00:20:58.200]you know, great relationship
- [00:20:59.950]they're building. And then the
- [00:21:01.980]person has something happen
- [00:21:03.510]where they need cash. And so
- [00:21:05.230]they send it to them. And it
- [00:21:06.570]just doesn't
- [00:21:11.080]work out for them. And so, you
- [00:21:12.240]know, we've seen a lot of
- [00:21:12.580]people get caught up in that.
- [00:21:13.080]We've seen a
- [00:21:13.080]lot of people get caught up in
- [00:21:13.080]that. And so we've seen a lot
- [00:21:13.080]of people get caught up in that.
- [00:21:13.080]And
- [00:21:13.080]sometimes students get checks
- [00:21:14.680]in the mail where the person
- [00:21:15.920]will ask them to bring them in,
- [00:21:17.800]cash them, send back $5,000,
- [00:21:19.630]but they get to keep the other
- [00:21:20.900]$2,000 and maybe it's a $7,000
- [00:21:23.400]check.
- [00:21:23.640]And the unfortunate thing is by
- [00:21:26.320]the time that check clears, it's
- [00:21:29.040]not a good check. And so
- [00:21:30.200]they're out that money. They're
- [00:21:31.650]not going to get their money.
- [00:21:32.950]They're not going to get
- [00:21:34.010]anything
- [00:21:34.360]back on that. We've seen quite
- [00:21:36.430]a, we've seen a few people get
- [00:21:38.330]caught up in that. Hasn't
- [00:21:40.200]happened for
- [00:21:40.680]the last couple of years. We've
- [00:21:41.060]seen a few people get caught up
- [00:21:41.060]in that. Hasn't happened for
- [00:21:41.060]the last
- [00:21:41.060]couple of years. So I'm hoping
- [00:21:43.030]that maybe sending checks to
- [00:21:44.750]the mail just hasn't been
- [00:21:46.280]profitable
- [00:21:46.720]for our criminals and they'll
- [00:21:48.370]stop doing that. Key logging
- [00:21:50.070]happens when somebody gets on
- [00:21:51.710]your
- [00:21:52.060]computer. You probably all know
- [00:21:53.830]that. And then they can capture
- [00:21:55.480]what's going on on that
- [00:21:56.630]computer.
- [00:21:57.380]We do have some situations with
- [00:22:00.040]phishing, and I'm going to show
- [00:22:02.790]you some examples. And that
- [00:22:05.480]comes through to us at the
- [00:22:06.870]credit union all the time. So
- [00:22:08.590]it's definitely used by our
- [00:22:10.130]fraudsters.
- [00:22:11.040]Also, they are doing some phishing,
- [00:22:15.760]like we just talked about. That
- [00:22:17.450]person from the Lancaster
- [00:22:18.800]County
- [00:22:19.360]Sheriff's Office, probably mimicking
- [00:22:22.850]their voice. Could be happening
- [00:22:25.820]to anyone that we hear those,
- [00:22:28.400]you might hear those situations
- [00:22:30.410]where a grandma gets a call and
- [00:22:32.300]they say, you know, your
- [00:22:34.000]grandson's in jail. And my mom
- [00:22:36.230]almost fell for it. She just
- [00:22:38.300]still claims to this day that
- [00:22:40.290]that was my
- [00:22:41.020]nephew on the phone. And I'm
- [00:22:42.770]just like, I don't think they're
- [00:22:44.730]probably using something to
- [00:22:46.410]mimic
- [00:22:46.820]his voice. I think it's just
- [00:22:48.770]they know how to say the right
- [00:22:50.660]things to get that grandma to
- [00:22:52.660]really
- [00:22:53.680]bite on what they're doing. Spoofing
- [00:22:56.550]is also happening a lot. I don't
- [00:22:59.010]think anybody in business
- [00:23:00.820]can get around having this
- [00:23:02.430]happen to you. They just go
- [00:23:04.170]ahead and pull off your phone
- [00:23:05.980]number,
- [00:23:06.500]call. We've had it here at the
- [00:23:07.710]credit union. That's why
- [00:23:08.800]sometimes you'll see an other
- [00:23:10.310]financial
- [00:23:11.000]institutions do this as well.
- [00:23:12.810]Put up a banner on our website
- [00:23:14.530]saying, just be careful. We're
- [00:23:16.420]not
- [00:23:16.620]going to call you and ask for
- [00:23:17.770]your personal private
- [00:23:18.770]information. We already have it.
- [00:23:20.330]If we
- [00:23:20.960]call you, we're going to know
- [00:23:22.840]we're talking to you. But they
- [00:23:24.870]can get our phone number, call,
- [00:23:27.820]say they're calling from the
- [00:23:29.120]credit union. I thought it was
- [00:23:30.580]very ingenious. We had a member
- [00:23:32.200]who thought she was being
- [00:23:33.800]transferred to the credit union
- [00:23:35.860]by a fraudster. And she said,
- [00:23:37.960]so
- [00:23:40.980]where are you calling from? And
- [00:23:42.180]the fraudster said, the
- [00:23:43.070]corporate office. And in her
- [00:23:44.190]mind,
- [00:23:44.520]she's like, the credit union,
- [00:23:45.880]there's like two offices. They
- [00:23:47.270]don't have a corporate office.
- [00:23:48.680]Then she says, well, where do
- [00:23:49.980]you think the corporate office
- [00:23:51.280]is? And they gave our East
- [00:23:52.500]Branch address. And so she knew
- [00:23:54.210]that that person wasn't correct
- [00:23:55.840]on the phone. So that's kind of
- [00:23:57.680]ingenious, I thought. So if it's
- [00:23:59.580]somebody calling and you think
- [00:24:01.230]that it's a place that you use
- [00:24:02.880]frequently, ask some questions
- [00:24:04.460]like that. And they'll probably
- [00:24:06.080]mess up. And then you can
- [00:24:07.310]really
- [00:24:07.740]know that you're talking to the
- [00:24:09.160]right person.
- [00:24:10.960]All right, let's go ahead and
- [00:24:12.780]get into scams. And the reason
- [00:24:15.310]I added a whole section and we
- [00:24:17.840]actually called this
- [00:24:19.500]presentation about scams is
- [00:24:21.680]because everything regarding ID
- [00:24:24.250]theft has
- [00:24:25.060]dropped off. ID theft is not
- [00:24:26.740]only 13% of the fraud that's
- [00:24:28.550]going on in Nebraska. When I
- [00:24:30.550]started doing
- [00:24:31.420]these seminars prior to COVID,
- [00:24:33.750]it was probably flip-flop from
- [00:24:36.000]here. Now scams make up 24% of
- [00:24:38.740]the fraud that is going on.
- [00:24:40.940]I have a quick list here of
- [00:24:43.190]what the percentages are. You
- [00:24:45.860]can kind of read that at your
- [00:24:47.400]own leisure
- [00:24:47.980]there. And then I have a couple
- [00:24:50.940]of slides here just to show you.
- [00:24:54.650]And I bet every one of you that's
- [00:24:57.840]listening today can raise your
- [00:24:59.910]hand and say, yes, I have
- [00:25:01.610]received one of these emails.
- [00:25:03.740]This one's a
- [00:25:05.760]little bit older, but I do want
- [00:25:07.320]to point out what to look for.
- [00:25:08.880]I think the first thing that
- [00:25:10.260]all of you can
- [00:25:10.920]see is at the top, it's a Gmail
- [00:25:12.830]account from Poppy. I don't
- [00:25:14.750]think the person from PayPal is
- [00:25:17.080]going to be sending you an
- [00:25:18.490]email from a Gmail account. So
- [00:25:20.300]that's the first thing that you
- [00:25:22.060]can
- [00:25:22.400]see from there. As you go down,
- [00:25:25.670]Gamby, they just kind of made
- [00:25:28.820]up something there that's $499.99.
- [00:25:33.880]I think also these numbers that
- [00:25:35.960]they come up with is a good
- [00:25:37.640]guide. It's really, what would
- [00:25:40.430]be $499
- [00:25:40.900]that you would do. But what
- [00:25:43.900]they're doing here is playing
- [00:25:47.180]into people's concern that they're
- [00:25:49.220]going
- [00:25:49.440]to be charged for something
- [00:25:50.620]that they didn't want or didn't
- [00:25:51.970]do, right? And in the past, we
- [00:25:54.820]could
- [00:25:55.080]always say, please don't click
- [00:25:56.550]on these. Don't click on them.
- [00:25:58.120]If you click on them, you're
- [00:25:59.420]going
- [00:25:59.800]to get into a certain situation.
- [00:26:01.250]So they've changed. You don't
- [00:26:02.600]click on them anymore. Now
- [00:26:03.860]they're putting in a bogus
- [00:26:05.010]phone number. And they're
- [00:26:06.590]really good. They'll have
- [00:26:07.550]somebody answer
- [00:26:08.480]the phone. They say, oh, yes,
- [00:26:09.920]you got that.
- [00:26:10.880]I need to get you to have
- [00:26:12.060]someone call you back from our
- [00:26:13.850]finance department so we can
- [00:26:15.440]get a credit
- [00:26:15.960]for you. And then they'll have
- [00:26:17.500]someone call back. And when you
- [00:26:19.150]talk to somebody who's been
- [00:26:20.560]part of
- [00:26:20.900]a scam, they'll say, but they
- [00:26:22.830]called me back. They knew
- [00:26:24.530]exactly who I was. They just
- [00:26:26.410]have gotten
- [00:26:27.040]really good at making it feel
- [00:26:28.480]like a very legitimate company
- [00:26:30.130]in what they're doing. So the
- [00:26:32.140]second one I have here is McAfee.
- [00:26:35.200]McAfee and Norton, which I have
- [00:26:37.650]at the back, those are really
- [00:26:40.240]popular
- [00:26:40.860]ones. We've been getting some
- [00:26:42.820]Geek Squad ones from Best Buy,
- [00:26:44.280]which really bothers me because
- [00:26:45.720]when
- [00:26:45.900]people have a scam and they
- [00:26:47.260]need to get their computer
- [00:26:49.800]fixed, I do send them either to
- [00:26:51.260]the Geek
- [00:26:51.660]Squad or to Schrock Innovations.
- [00:26:55.010]I'll walk through a little bit
- [00:26:57.040]on a scam and what to do when
- [00:26:58.740]that
- [00:26:58.920]happens. But I did want to show
- [00:27:01.190]you these again. The other part
- [00:27:03.580]of scam that's happening a
- [00:27:05.520]little
- [00:27:05.720]different than it used to. So
- [00:27:07.250]we preached and preached and
- [00:27:08.680]preached. Make sure not to go
- [00:27:10.240]out and get
- [00:27:10.840]gift cards. You've probably
- [00:27:12.080]heard that, right? Don't go out
- [00:27:13.440]and get a gift card when
- [00:27:14.340]somebody
- [00:27:14.920]asks you to do that. So now
- [00:27:16.400]they've switched. And what they
- [00:27:18.310]do is they have you get money
- [00:27:19.920]and put it
- [00:27:20.380]into an ATM that turns it into
- [00:27:22.010]Bitcoin. And once it's in that
- [00:27:23.780]ATM, you can't get it back. I
- [00:27:26.100]do like
- [00:27:29.660]to put this slide up when we
- [00:27:30.990]were talking about students and
- [00:27:32.640]the checks. It sometimes sounds
- [00:27:34.420]too
- [00:27:34.720]good to be true. Some of the scams
- [00:27:36.650]are going that way, but a lot
- [00:27:38.240]of them are more about what I
- [00:27:39.770]was
- [00:27:40.820]telling you were. They're
- [00:27:41.640]telling you you're going to be
- [00:27:42.560]charged and you don't want to
- [00:27:43.550]be charged.

- [00:35:34.890]are really panic, make you
- [00:35:36.740]panic. You don't know what to
- [00:35:38.980]do.
- [00:35:39.340]Those are the kinds of things
- [00:35:40.880]that happen when it comes to scams.
- [00:35:43.230]So be aware.
- [00:35:44.900]We had another, this happens
- [00:35:47.960]every day, if not two to three
- [00:35:51.010]times a day. So same thing,
- [00:35:54.020]scenario of a member who
- [00:35:56.870]received an email and this one
- [00:36:00.460]was from Norton,
- [00:36:02.640]called the phone number, again,
- [00:36:05.000]got through these scenarios,
- [00:36:08.500]have them come into the
- [00:36:09.540]financial institution, always
- [00:36:11.340]give them a story to tell us to
- [00:36:14.030]try to
- [00:36:14.580]withdraw the cash. I don't know
- [00:36:18.510]how much more we can talk about
- [00:36:21.770]it, but I want everyone to keep
- [00:36:25.340]talking about it. And don't be
- [00:36:26.840]embarrassed if you happen to be
- [00:36:28.300]someone that's a victim of a
- [00:36:29.550]scam.
- [00:36:30.040]Talk about it, report it,
- [00:36:31.770]because we need to keep telling
- [00:36:33.640]people that this is going on.
- [00:36:35.660]Right here, I have the weakest
- [00:36:37.150]linked up,
- [00:36:38.500]you probably know that because
- [00:36:39.400]you work at the university. So
- [00:36:40.960]you're always on tap that
- [00:36:42.770]people
- [00:36:43.060]are trying to scam you on your
- [00:36:45.190]computer at work. And so we
- [00:36:46.740]have to be really careful with
- [00:36:48.530]that as
- [00:36:48.880]well, because we can make the
- [00:36:50.440]system really vulnerable where
- [00:36:52.120]we work. That's usually the
- [00:36:54.080]weakest link in how they can
- [00:36:56.150]get in. Not very often do they
- [00:36:58.490]hack into a business computer,
- [00:37:00.300]it's usually someone letting
- [00:37:01.610]them in. Freezing your credit.
- [00:37:04.890]I'm not sure how many people
- [00:37:07.150]are on
- [00:37:07.720]the call today that have done
- [00:37:10.390]this. I've had my credit frozen
- [00:37:13.460]probably 12 years. These are
- [00:37:18.280]the
- [00:37:18.400]numbers here. Again, I can
- [00:37:20.330]share that with all of you. You
- [00:37:22.410]can call or you can go online
- [00:37:24.340]to the
- [00:37:25.240]three credit bureaus, Equifax,
- [00:37:27.990]Experian, TransUnion. All of
- [00:37:30.440]them do it a little bit
- [00:37:32.200]differently when you freeze
- [00:37:33.570]your credit. One of them will
- [00:37:35.050]give you a pin number, one of
- [00:37:36.390]them you
- [00:37:36.880]have to set. The important
- [00:37:38.490]thing is that you need to keep
- [00:37:40.090]that pin number in order to unfreeze
- [00:37:42.220]your
- [00:37:42.460]credit. And so some people ask,
- [00:37:44.330]well, what is the advantages
- [00:37:45.960]and disadvantages of freezing
- [00:37:47.780]your
- [00:37:48.040]credit? If you're younger, it
- [00:37:50.560]might be a little bit more clanky
- [00:37:52.990]for you because you're out
- [00:37:54.970]trying
- [00:37:55.540]to get credit a little bit more
- [00:37:57.060]than, say, someone who's my age,
- [00:37:58.850]and I already have my credit
- [00:38:00.350]cards,
- [00:38:00.640]and I have my car loan, and I
- [00:38:02.760]have my home. So I don't need
- [00:38:05.230]to unfreeze,
- [00:38:06.880]didn't freeze it as much. That
- [00:38:08.680]could be a deterrent to wanting
- [00:38:10.420]to freeze your credit.
- [00:38:11.560]But you can unfreeze it. So you
- [00:38:15.210]go in, you freeze it, you have
- [00:38:18.170]your pin number,
- [00:38:18.820]then let's say you need
- [00:38:20.580]something. So in my case, a
- [00:38:22.880]very long time ago, I needed to
- [00:38:25.780]switch my phone
- [00:38:26.680]carrier, and the phone carrier
- [00:38:28.730]that I was going to wanted to
- [00:38:30.460]pull my credit. So I'm like,
- [00:38:32.500]well,
- [00:38:32.680]I have my credit frozen.
- [00:38:34.050]Unfortunately, in this case,
- [00:38:35.320]the person didn't know which
- [00:38:36.880]credit bureau they're going to
- [00:38:37.950]pull. So I had to unfreeze all
- [00:38:38.990]of them. Again, that works a
- [00:38:41.080]little
- [00:38:41.200]bit different. Some of these
- [00:38:42.760]set a date, some you have to go
- [00:38:44.320]back in and freeze. That just
- [00:38:47.260]varies
- [00:38:47.620]between the three of them. But
- [00:38:49.100]it's a little clanky, but you
- [00:38:50.360]can do it. So you unfreeze them.
- [00:38:51.940]The person who pulls credit
- [00:38:53.490]does that. It could be a
- [00:38:54.710]financial institution here at
- [00:38:56.440]the credit union.
- [00:38:57.040]We know that you have it frozen.
- [00:38:58.570]You unfreeze it. We pull the
- [00:38:59.920]credit. You freeze it back up.
- [00:39:01.720]It's all free. You don't have
- [00:39:03.650]to pay to do that.
- [00:39:05.860]The advantages, if your credit
- [00:39:09.070]card is part of a breach, so
- [00:39:11.780]for instance, the reason these
- [00:39:14.140]are
- [00:39:14.200]free to freeze now is that Equifax
- [00:39:16.320]had a huge breach probably
- [00:39:17.940]about six years ago when a
- [00:39:20.500]credit
- [00:39:20.800]bureau is compromised. That's
- [00:39:22.510]pretty scary because it has all
- [00:39:24.130]of your information and
- [00:39:25.420]there's nothing really they can
- [00:39:26.960]do except watch to try to make
- [00:39:28.320]sure you don't have any
- [00:39:29.390]problems.
- [00:39:29.680]You can't change your account
- [00:39:30.870]numbers. You can't get a new
- [00:39:32.040]social security number.
- [00:39:34.840]But in that case, I didn't need
- [00:39:36.260]to worry about it because no
- [00:39:37.520]one can open anything. They
- [00:39:39.400]cannot
- [00:39:39.760]go into the credit bureau and
- [00:39:41.490]get my information and get it
- [00:39:43.230]out. So I don't need to worry
- [00:39:45.400]about
- [00:39:45.640]that kind of any kind of breach
- [00:39:48.140]on my credit. The other thing,
- [00:39:52.060]I don't know if you'll be
- [00:39:53.560]interested in this, but I don't
- [00:39:55.300]have any direct mail pieces
- [00:39:56.790]from anyone coming to my house,
- [00:39:59.500]except for political ads. I can't
- [00:40:01.260]seem to get rid of those. But
- [00:40:03.490]for
- [00:40:03.820]anything that has to do with
- [00:40:05.760]credit, I no longer get those
- [00:40:07.840]mailings to my house offering
- [00:40:09.640]me
- [00:40:09.760]different credit because there
- [00:40:11.280]is no way for them to do that.
- [00:40:12.520]I've had the question someone
- [00:40:13.960]asked,
- [00:40:14.260]well, what about the fact that
- [00:40:16.010]your insurance rates are off
- [00:40:17.630]the credit bureau? Sometimes
- [00:40:20.080]some healthcare issues are with
- [00:40:22.050]credit bureaus. Once you've
- [00:40:23.920]allowed someone to pull your
- [00:40:25.670]credit,
- [00:40:26.320]they can go and get updates,
- [00:40:28.040]even if you have your credit
- [00:40:29.820]frozen. So that's not a deterrent.
- [00:40:32.440]That's
- [00:40:32.800]not going to cause your
- [00:40:33.810]insurance rates to go up or
- [00:40:34.960]cause any problems with other
- [00:40:36.340]things you
- [00:40:36.760]do if you want to go ahead and
- [00:40:38.950]freeze your credit. So up to
- [00:40:41.640]you. I do find it, for me,
- [00:40:45.280]it's just a peace of mind.
- [00:40:48.250]Annual credit report, I said
- [00:40:50.020]that I would go ahead and talk
- [00:40:50.860]about
- [00:40:51.160]reviewing your credit report.
- [00:40:53.320]So one of the things we talked
- [00:40:55.150]about at the very start was one
- [00:40:57.760]of the
- [00:40:58.000]things you can do is to check
- [00:40:59.380]your credit report. So annualcreditreport.com,
- [00:41:02.360]that is a government
- [00:41:04.360]website. There are others,
- [00:41:05.990]right? I think they're, you
- [00:41:07.610]know, karma, some other things
- [00:41:10.120]you can get in
- [00:41:10.780]the get through email. They
- [00:41:12.360]might tell you about it or
- [00:41:13.680]might advertise about it. The
- [00:41:16.240]thing I like
- [00:41:16.660]the most about annual credit
- [00:41:18.100]report is you're not going to
- [00:41:19.670]get any spam afterwards. It's a
- [00:41:21.340]government site. You go in, you
- [00:41:23.090]get your credit report. That's
- [00:41:24.770]it. There's nothing more to the
- [00:41:26.560]site.
- [00:41:28.000]It will ask you for your social
- [00:41:30.000]security number. So don't get
- [00:41:31.740]freaked out when you go in
- [00:41:32.980]there to
- [00:41:33.320]get that. But that's the only
- [00:41:34.950]way to get your credit report
- [00:41:36.540]done. Now, everyone can get one
- [00:41:38.860]free credit report a year, but
- [00:41:40.720]we have three credit bureau
- [00:41:42.480]agencies. So truthfully, you
- [00:41:44.370]can
- [00:41:44.700]get two a year, right? So get
- [00:41:46.940]one first. I would always
- [00:41:48.920]suggest, if you haven't done
- [00:41:51.080]this, to go
- [00:41:52.160]to Experian first. Most
- [00:41:53.960]financial institutions in
- [00:41:55.220]Nebraska use Experian. So that
- [00:41:57.170]would probably
- [00:41:57.780]give you the best updated
- [00:41:59.590]information. Go in, get that,
- [00:42:02.080]see how that's going. If there's
- [00:42:04.690]anything
- [00:42:04.960]on that credit report that you
- [00:42:06.440]see is wrong, then you can
- [00:42:07.620]dispute that with the credit
- [00:42:09.000]bureau.
- [00:42:09.560]It takes about six months to
- [00:42:11.110]clear up. So it's another
- [00:42:12.800]suggestion if you're going out
- [00:42:14.390]to get
- [00:42:14.840]credit, such as buying a home.
- [00:42:16.810]Good idea to make sure you go
- [00:42:17.980]and look at this credit report
- [00:42:19.610]six
- [00:42:20.260]months in advance. If there is
- [00:42:22.000]an error, you can get it
- [00:42:23.280]corrected before you go talk to
- [00:42:24.970]that loan
- [00:42:27.560]agency. So then go to Equifax
- [00:42:30.600]next. Get that six months after
- [00:42:33.990]that. So you can be really on
- [00:42:37.620]top of
- [00:42:38.020]what's going on with your
- [00:42:39.320]credit and making sure there
- [00:42:40.800]isn't anything on there that
- [00:42:42.280]shouldn't be
- [00:42:43.060]reported. Another myth, and I
- [00:42:45.190]think we'll probably cover this
- [00:42:47.240]again in another series I'm
- [00:42:49.340]going to do
- [00:42:49.640]for this challenge, but people
- [00:42:53.600]have a fear of wanting to close.
- [00:42:57.340]A credit card or other lines of
- [00:42:59.480]credit. It is okay to do that.
- [00:43:01.920]If you're out shopping for a
- [00:43:04.070]home for
- [00:43:04.560]a mortgage, I would hesitate to
- [00:43:06.810]close anything at that time.
- [00:43:08.980]But if you're not doing that,
- [00:43:11.180]your credit will dip your score
- [00:43:13.840]a little bit, but it will come
- [00:43:16.370]right back up the next time
- [00:43:20.080]that
- [00:43:20.240]report comes out. So it is okay.
- [00:43:22.590]Even if you've had a credit
- [00:43:24.100]card for a long time, it is
- [00:43:25.730]okay to
- [00:43:26.220]get that off there.
- [00:43:27.120]The reason that I suggest that
- [00:43:29.750]you look at doing that is the
- [00:43:32.300]more lines of credit you have
- [00:43:33.680]out there that are open and
- [00:43:35.360]available, it's just hard to
- [00:43:36.820]keep track of. You may have
- [00:43:39.620]opened up a department store
- [00:43:40.820]card 10 years ago, and that
- [00:43:44.500]available credit's still out
- [00:43:45.770]there. Well, you kind of forget,
- [00:43:46.640]right? You get it and you put
- [00:43:48.440]it in a drawer and you kind of
- [00:43:49.760]forget about it. Well, that's
- [00:43:51.500]an open avenue for ID theft or
- [00:43:53.250]scams, and so that's why I'm
- [00:43:54.960]adding it here, even though I
- [00:43:56.900]wouldn't do that.
- [00:43:56.900]I will cover that a little bit
- [00:43:58.100]more in depth in another
- [00:43:59.160]seminar.
- [00:43:59.760]All right. I don't know if any
- [00:44:03.010]of you have this available, but
- [00:44:04.990]most financial institutions now
- [00:44:07.160]give you this advantage with
- [00:44:08.920]your card, and that is called
- [00:44:10.730]card controls. Here at the
- [00:44:12.830]credit union,
- [00:44:13.200]we have it under my cards, and
- [00:44:15.320]these give you the ability to
- [00:44:16.850]turn the cards on and off.
- [00:44:18.660]It also gives you the ability
- [00:44:21.060]to set alerts on your cards. So
- [00:44:23.760]you can set it up. Let's say
- [00:44:26.170]that
- [00:44:26.680]you're real comfortable if a
- [00:44:28.260]charge goes through that's $50,
- [00:44:30.370]but I'm not real comfortable. I
- [00:44:32.210]don't
- [00:44:32.660]do a lot of charges that are
- [00:44:33.590]around $100. So if something
- [00:44:34.960]goes through for $100, I'd like
- [00:44:36.360]it to
- [00:44:36.680]alert me, and then I can just
- [00:44:37.990]look at it and make sure that
- [00:44:39.250]it's okay. You can set
- [00:44:40.330]something that
- [00:44:41.580]specific. Also, you can set it
- [00:44:43.730]up so that you have regions,
- [00:44:45.570]for instance. So I only want my
- [00:44:47.830]card used
- [00:44:48.280]in Nebraska. You can set that
- [00:44:50.400]up. Of course, you can take
- [00:44:52.160]that block off when you travel,
- [00:44:54.320]but that might also help.
- [00:44:56.460]You keep track of what's going
- [00:44:58.780]on to control it for that. One
- [00:45:00.850]really cool thing that most
- [00:45:02.820]card
- [00:45:03.500]controls have, and if you're a
- [00:45:05.070]parent, you might like this.
- [00:45:06.690]You can make sure that that
- [00:45:08.050]card
- [00:45:08.360]isn't useful for out on the
- [00:45:10.180]internet. You can't do any
- [00:45:12.170]online purchases with the card.
- [00:45:14.680]You can
- [00:45:15.140]turn that off and on. So if it's
- [00:45:16.820]your card and you're letting
- [00:45:18.200]them use it, maybe you just
- [00:45:19.590]want
- [00:45:19.940]them to go get some gas, which
- [00:45:21.420]is fine. We totally understand
- [00:45:23.070]that. You clamp that card down
- [00:45:24.750]while
- [00:45:24.940]they're going to do that.
- [00:45:26.240]And then bring it back. Or if
- [00:45:27.420]you're just trying to teach
- [00:45:29.140]some responsibility to your
- [00:45:31.700]child,
- [00:45:32.060]you can get a debit card for
- [00:45:33.600]them and then really tie that
- [00:45:35.290]thing down so that all they can
- [00:45:37.080]do maybe
- [00:45:37.680]is gas. But at least you're
- [00:45:39.300]teaching them all about credit
- [00:45:41.070]cards and plastics. There's no
- [00:45:46.100]question that that's where we're
- [00:45:47.510]moving, right? We're not going
- [00:45:48.990]to have kids running around
- [00:45:50.110]with
- [00:45:50.420]cash much. They're going to be
- [00:45:51.740]running around with cards. So
- [00:45:53.050]they need to understand that
- [00:45:54.310]that's real
- [00:45:54.760]money. I know it's
- [00:45:56.020]you know, in the day when we
- [00:45:57.190]only had $10, the $10 was gone.
- [00:45:59.530]You know, now you have a card
- [00:46:00.960]and it
- [00:46:01.460]seems, you know, an infinite
- [00:46:02.920]amount of money on there. So
- [00:46:04.570]good way to teach them. But
- [00:46:06.320]card controls
- [00:46:06.980]is really an awesome
- [00:46:08.380]opportunity to pay attention to
- [00:46:10.610]what's going on with your cards.
- [00:46:13.570]Some people
- [00:46:14.440]might be concerned about using
- [00:46:16.050]a digital wallet, but I do want
- [00:46:17.650]to assure everyone that these
- [00:46:20.180]digital
- [00:46:20.520]wallets are safe. In fact, it's
- [00:46:23.330]changing the algorithm on the
- [00:46:25.800]card. So if you're using a
- [00:46:25.800]digital
- [00:46:25.800]wallet, you want to make sure
- [00:46:27.170]that you're using a digital
- [00:46:28.430]wallet on the card each time it's
- [00:46:30.350]being
- [00:46:31.060]used. So it's really hard for
- [00:46:32.880]anyone to steal the information
- [00:46:34.780]while you're using that digital
- [00:46:36.740]wallet. We have Google Pay,
- [00:46:38.270]Samsung Pay and Apple Pay. If
- [00:46:40.230]you haven't tried it, it is a
- [00:46:43.480]lot of fun
- [00:46:44.280]and makes things makes charging
- [00:46:46.170]easier. And in that case, also,
- [00:46:48.270]you can set it an alert. So
- [00:46:49.960]that
- [00:46:50.300]alert comes right away telling
- [00:46:51.920]you you just did a transaction.
- [00:46:53.680]So if someone else is getting ahold
- [00:46:55.580]of
- [00:46:55.580]it, you can set it an alert. So
- [00:46:56.680]you don't have to worry about
- [00:46:57.990]that. And that is all I have

- [00:50:59.940]it. So if she hasn't already
- [00:51:02.080]done facial recognition or
- [00:51:03.700]any other biometrics on her
- [00:51:05.710]phone, it will require that in
- [00:51:07.950]order to do that.
- [00:51:09.360]But as a also you can talk to
- [00:51:11.700]her about this. There should be
- [00:51:14.700]a way for you to wipe that
- [00:51:16.360]phone in case she does lose it
- [00:51:19.010]and to have that ability to do
- [00:51:21.660]that. I'm pretty sure Apple has
- [00:51:24.200]a
- [00:51:24.200]program that can help you to
- [00:51:26.270]help you do that for her. But
- [00:51:28.350]yeah, it is safe because one,
- [00:51:30.880]we tend to lose our purses. We
- [00:51:32.440]lose our cards. Right. We just
- [00:51:34.200]don't lose our phones.
- [00:51:35.560]It does change the algorithm
- [00:51:37.740]every time. So they can't pick
- [00:51:40.170]up the number. So even if there
- [00:51:42.770]is
- [00:51:42.980]some sort of skimmer or
- [00:51:44.150]something on the machine, it
- [00:51:45.680]can't. It's a different number.
- [00:51:47.570]It can't get
- [00:51:48.460]that information. So that's why
- [00:51:50.980]the wallets, they also verify
- [00:51:53.240]you when you put your phone
- [00:51:54.180]on your phone to make sure it's
- [00:51:55.520]you that's doing that. We have
- [00:51:57.380]not had an ounce of trouble.
- [00:51:59.520]And so
- [00:51:59.820]if there's a question, then the
- [00:52:02.100]financial institution can go
- [00:52:04.200]into Visa and we can
- [00:52:05.620]research it and make sure that
- [00:52:06.930]that's the person that's coming
- [00:52:08.350]in. So if there's any flags,
- [00:52:09.800]the financial institution gets
- [00:52:11.400]involved. Okay, perfect.
- [00:52:13.240]But I think for your daughter,
- [00:52:14.400]she just seems like she's
- [00:52:15.340]probably going to go out and
- [00:52:16.480]use that where she wants. So
- [00:52:18.410]probably it's more about just a
- [00:52:20.420]conversation about
- [00:52:24.160]certain things are.
