- [00:00:00.000]so this morning i'm asked i
- [00:00:05.070]asked doug to give us an update
- [00:00:11.170]on his digital marketing
- [00:00:14.760]courses
- [00:00:15.660]because i had a lot of
- [00:00:17.120]questions about who's coming to
- [00:00:19.460]the class and all that kind of
- [00:00:21.540]stuff
- [00:00:22.080]so doug has done that so let's
- [00:00:24.280]let him just give us a brief
- [00:00:26.690]update sure you bet so we've uh
- [00:00:28.730]we've
- [00:00:29.260]kick-started the classes the
- [00:00:31.510]first one was earlier has
- [00:00:33.220]already has already come and
- [00:00:35.330]gone
- [00:00:35.760]we set a limit of 25 and we hit
- [00:00:38.210]that pretty quickly for all the
- [00:00:41.120]courses they're all the same
- [00:00:42.880]all 25 people signed up for all
- [00:00:45.390]five classes um there might
- [00:00:47.730]have been one one person in
- [00:00:49.290]there who
- [00:00:50.060]who signed up for four of the
- [00:00:52.210]five um but we were able to
- [00:00:54.170]still get another person that
- [00:00:56.510]was
- [00:00:56.900]more than happy to take that um
- [00:00:59.260]mostly the panhandle um in fact
- [00:01:01.690]the only person outside of the
- [00:01:03.140]panhandle came from kansas city
- [00:01:04.880]which is kind of fascinating um
- [00:01:08.360]that uh that we were able to
- [00:01:10.820]get that far um pretty good
- [00:01:13.980]spread from kimball to to shatter
- [00:01:16.140]and scott's bluff sydney bridgeport
- [00:01:18.640]um a few spots here in
- [00:01:21.960]between so we are looking to
- [00:01:24.050]redo or reschedule the courses
- [00:01:26.200]again they'll probably start
- [00:01:28.690]out in the
- [00:01:29.260]summer but we're hoping that we
- [00:01:31.510]can get them up closer towards
- [00:01:31.840]the end of summer um by the
- [00:01:32.330]time
- [00:01:32.400]these are done summer's a hard
- [00:01:34.260]time um we usually use summer
- [00:01:36.460]for a lot of planning so summer
- [00:01:38.600]is
- [00:01:38.760]is uh less than ideal so we'll
- [00:01:40.680]start start up another session
- [00:01:42.780]once we get to um get to the
- [00:01:47.320]summer i don't have dates to
- [00:01:48.700]deb davis is on my team she's
- [00:01:50.080]working on those as we speak
- [00:01:51.520]we are also looking um to do
- [00:01:54.030]some face-to-face coursework
- [00:01:56.970]with these
- [00:01:59.260]um we're looking at doing some
- [00:02:06.420]of those in the southern tier
- [00:02:13.350]right now i don't have dates
- [00:02:19.950]but we're
- [00:02:22.400]working with uh sarah bennett
- [00:02:24.080]with the nebraska business
- [00:02:25.630]development center i know i
- [00:02:27.460]know jamie
- [00:02:27.960]would know know sarah
- [00:02:29.260]and they've got some um some
- [00:02:31.240]funding so that we can continue
- [00:02:33.000]to do basically what we've just
- [00:02:34.920]done
- [00:02:35.300]and that funding really is
- [00:02:36.870]geared towards those some
- [00:02:38.380]southern tier communities so
- [00:02:40.140]hopefully like
- [00:02:41.140]kimball um the sydney chapel
- [00:02:43.780]area and then again um oshkosh
- [00:02:46.670]llewellyn that area to to do uh
- [00:02:49.720]basically an eight to five
- [00:02:51.170]might not be eight to five but
- [00:02:52.730]but ballpark digital marketing
- [00:02:55.740]class
- [00:02:56.320]that would be in person and
- [00:02:59.260]um give give individuals in
- [00:03:01.140]those communities a chance to
- [00:03:02.820]to really dive in hands-on and
- [00:03:04.620]get
- [00:03:04.960]experience with that so the
- [00:03:06.910]feedback's been really great i
- [00:03:08.390]don't know if anybody on here i
- [00:03:10.240]don't i don't have the list i
- [00:03:12.400]should know um who was in the
- [00:03:14.570]class um don's pretty dynamic
- [00:03:17.040]he's a
- [00:03:17.480]really fun guy and the last
- [00:03:19.610]thing don wants to do is be
- [00:03:21.640]boring um so just be careful
- [00:03:23.860]don has his
- [00:03:24.620]own little band and if you're
- [00:03:26.350]not careful don will be on
- [00:03:28.030]there with a guitar so i'm
- [00:03:29.240]going to
- [00:03:29.260]just throw that out there i
- [00:03:31.400]mean that in a positive way but
- [00:03:33.660]it's going really well and we
- [00:03:35.020]look forward to doing even more
- [00:03:36.600]awesome i see we've got a
- [00:03:40.100]couple more people have joined
- [00:03:44.680]us um i i know we do have one
- [00:03:47.470]that
- [00:03:48.020]we have not had before and i'm
- [00:03:49.910]gonna just connie i'm gonna
- [00:03:51.630]call you out because i know who
- [00:03:53.720]you are
- [00:03:54.260]um we have mayor connie shell
- [00:03:57.450]who's the mayor of crawford and
- [00:03:59.530]she's been on our
- [00:04:00.660]list for quite a while but uh i
- [00:04:02.300]don't know that she's had a
- [00:04:03.630]chance to get on so i just
- [00:04:05.080]wanted to
- [00:04:05.400]make sure that we introduced
- [00:04:06.670]her and i think actually let's
- [00:04:08.000]let's do a round of
- [00:04:08.780]introductions
- [00:04:09.580]because we have several people
- [00:04:11.310]who are on the phone as well so
- [00:04:12.890]i'm just going to kind of go
- [00:04:14.620]around um chelsea you're the
- [00:04:17.010]first one on my camera uh chelsea

- [00:07:02.940]oh star says she's got her it's
- [00:07:06.300]her phone so she's trying to
- [00:07:09.120]figure out how to unmute the
- [00:07:10.740]phone and say something sorry
- [00:07:12.780]star um thank you for joining
- [00:07:14.810]us that's awesome um we have emily
- [00:07:18.920]emily with us today would you
- [00:07:21.090]um just introduce yourself
- [00:07:22.950]briefly
- [00:07:23.240]hi emily shook i'm the director
- [00:07:25.580]of economic development for the
- [00:07:27.990]city of bassett nebraska
- [00:07:29.600]awesome and mike verge i made
- [00:07:34.960]it why does your computer have
- [00:07:37.230]to act up right before you're
- [00:07:38.840]going
- [00:07:38.940]to do something like this so
- [00:07:40.610]but i might have some advice
- [00:07:42.280]for star because when you get
- [00:07:44.050]into
- [00:07:44.460]the meeting on a phone it says
- [00:07:45.990]you have to press star six on
- [00:07:47.480]your phone in the zoom
- [00:07:48.920]and then that will let you in
- [00:07:50.530]to the meeting but then you can
- [00:07:52.400]mute it or unmute it from your
- [00:07:54.120]phone
- [00:07:54.460]stuff there so try the star six
- [00:07:56.210]see if that works star and then
- [00:07:57.970]maybe you can work from there i
- [00:07:59.560]don't know i'm mike verge uh
- [00:08:00.990]valentine economic development
- [00:08:02.770]glad to be here we don't have
- [00:08:04.190]as much
- [00:08:04.680]snow as they do out west but we
- [00:08:06.450]did get an inch and a half of
- [00:08:07.740]moisture out of all of it so
- [00:08:09.360]awesome and connie was there
- [00:08:11.720]anything you wanted to to say
- [00:08:13.730]about uh
- [00:08:14.920]to introduce yourself other
- [00:08:16.390]than my brief introduction
- [00:08:18.920]no you're good oh thank you i
- [00:08:21.570]see star got it to work go
- [00:08:23.450]ahead star i'm here i kept
- [00:08:25.230]hitting pound
- [00:08:26.080]six i knew it was something duh
- [00:08:27.930]anyway i'm star layla in the
- [00:08:29.700]economic development director
- [00:08:31.710]for
- [00:08:31.900]the city of scott's bluff and
- [00:08:34.200]technically challenged most of
- [00:08:36.790]the time well you've got
- [00:08:38.660]a piece of advice today if you'll
- [00:08:40.040]write that down maybe to work
- [00:08:41.250]every day awesome yes star
- [00:08:42.640]star six instead of pound six i'll
- [00:08:44.840]just remember it from your name
- [00:08:46.830]that would be great
- [00:08:48.920]today we have with us daniel bennett
- [00:08:51.920]you probably remember that daniel
- [00:08:54.600]bennett used to be coming to
- [00:08:56.420]these things a while ago and um
- [00:08:58.950]we are so glad to have him back
- [00:09:01.440]daniel would you go ahead and
- [00:09:03.360]tell us what you're up to now
- [00:09:05.180]sure yeah thanks for having me
- [00:09:08.660]um i've uh been seeing some of
- [00:09:12.000]you
- [00:09:12.120]around a little bit more
- [00:09:13.570]recently but um for those of
- [00:09:15.260]you who i didn't meet when i
- [00:09:16.840]was at my
- [00:09:18.920]at pad i was there for about
- [00:09:20.150]five years working as a
- [00:09:21.230]community planner um so was uh
- [00:09:23.860]was able to
- [00:09:25.540]travel around the panhandle
- [00:09:28.050]working on plans and studies um
- [00:09:30.560]brownfields work um and uh so
- [00:09:33.060]that's
- [00:09:33.280]where i got to know most of you
- [00:09:35.190]but i went away for a little
- [00:09:36.620]while and i have been back for
- [00:09:38.440]about
- [00:09:38.840]a year and now i'm working with
- [00:09:40.970]an organization called civic nebraska
- [00:09:43.800]um it's a non-profit we're
- [00:09:48.920]but uh they let me work
- [00:09:50.260]remotely from the panhandle
- [00:09:52.050]which works out for me um and
- [00:09:54.960]so uh
- [00:09:55.760]so i work across the state and
- [00:09:58.260]uh and i guess today um when jenny
- [00:10:01.250]extended the invite i just
- [00:10:04.240]wanted to uh one of the things
- [00:10:06.220]that we ought that i work in is
- [00:10:08.190]uh in civic health so working
- [00:10:10.200]with
- [00:10:10.640]youth and adults across the
- [00:10:12.390]state um worked with pad on a
- [00:10:14.210]comprehensive development plan
- [00:10:16.320]in potter
- [00:10:18.920]sort of weave civic engagement
- [00:10:21.270]into that plan and into the
- [00:10:23.350]process uh of of developing
- [00:10:25.330]that plan
- [00:10:26.120]and so whether it's youth or
- [00:10:27.700]adults across the state um work
- [00:10:29.480]on identifying what are those
- [00:10:31.300]skills
- [00:10:31.680]and civic habits of building a
- [00:10:33.520]strong community of building
- [00:10:35.370]connection and engagement um
- [00:10:37.370]and so
- [00:10:37.680]i want to talk a little bit
- [00:10:38.970]about just sort of how we
- [00:10:40.200]arrived at that how it connects
- [00:10:41.800]to community
- [00:10:42.280]and economic development and
- [00:10:44.610]then um with the group here i
- [00:10:46.810]uh that's pretty informal
- [00:10:48.920]i think we can be pretty
- [00:10:49.820]conversational about it i'll
- [00:10:50.990]share a little bit of
- [00:10:51.770]background data on
- [00:10:52.840]nebraska sorry for those of you
- [00:10:54.660]who have seen this maybe like
- [00:10:56.340]once or twice already but i
- [00:10:57.880]know
- [00:10:58.260]there's some people who i haven't
- [00:10:59.960]who i haven't met so hopefully
- [00:11:01.450]it'll be informative and then
- [00:11:03.060]we can just talk a little bit
- [00:11:04.780]about um you know what does
- [00:11:05.830]this look like for us to set
- [00:11:07.220]the stage
- [00:11:07.800]for uh for connection for
- [00:11:09.720]engagement for confidence in
- [00:11:11.910]institutions and for political
- [00:11:14.080]involvement in our towns and
- [00:11:16.030]why is that important um it's
- [00:11:17.970]uh not
- [00:11:18.920]every day that i get to uh sort
- [00:11:21.340]of jump back into the old crew
- [00:11:23.540]of people that i uh used to
- [00:11:25.320]work with and more in the
- [00:11:26.520]community economic development
- [00:11:28.320]realm so uh so i'm excited
- [00:11:29.470]about
- [00:11:29.840]the discussion so uh i'm going
- [00:11:32.380]to try to present i don't know
- [00:11:34.780]if i'm able to do that uh jenny
- [00:11:37.320]you should have ability to do
- [00:11:40.790]it
- [00:11:41.080]great
- [00:11:48.920]oh
- [00:11:53.080]there we go
- [00:11:58.540]okay so uh i wanted to start
- [00:12:02.160]out as a community planner i
- [00:12:05.920]came across this quote a couple
- [00:12:07.950]of
- [00:12:08.100]years ago that i that i uh
- [00:12:09.830]really liked and it's from dwight
- [00:12:12.320]eisenhower he was given a
- [00:12:14.200]speech and
- [00:12:14.520]he said plans are worthless but
- [00:12:16.670]planning is everything and uh
- [00:12:18.780]i'm going to start out as a
- [00:12:18.780]community planner i came across
- [00:12:18.800]this quote a couple of years
- [00:12:18.800]ago
- [00:12:18.920]that really resonated with me
- [00:12:20.920]as far as the uh somebody in
- [00:12:23.620]the planning business
- [00:12:24.760]who uh you know you see
- [00:12:26.430]sometimes these plans that just
- [00:12:28.930]sit on the shelf and so that um
- [00:12:31.640]to me i you
- [00:12:33.240]know uh eisenhower was talking
- [00:12:35.890]about um especially the uh
- [00:12:38.140]invasion of normandy um and
- [00:12:41.200]that you know
- [00:12:41.640]you can plan for everything to
- [00:12:43.270]go right you can you can make
- [00:12:44.730]these plans based on what you
- [00:12:46.320]think
- [00:12:46.520]will happen and things are
- [00:12:47.200]inevitably going to happen and
- [00:12:48.000]things are going to happen and
- [00:12:48.760]things
- [00:12:48.780]are going to happen that are
- [00:12:49.790]different um you're dealing
- [00:12:51.110]with dynamic changing
- [00:12:52.300]situations but if
- [00:12:54.280]you're uh so the the plans
- [00:12:57.580]ultimately might not pan out
- [00:12:59.560]but um oh yes but uh but if you're
- [00:13:04.040]sort of
- [00:13:04.380]steeped in the character of
- [00:13:05.930]those problems then you can
- [00:13:07.490]manage those situations so for
- [00:13:09.380]me um you
- [00:13:09.900]know in the comprehensive plan
- [00:13:11.150]we always everybody's saying we
- [00:13:12.480]want this to be a living
- [00:13:13.460]document uh
- [00:13:14.920]we want it to be something that's
- [00:13:16.690]uh that's alive something that
- [00:13:18.400]is constantly changing and
- [00:13:19.980]being
- [00:13:20.260]used you can see it in almost
- [00:13:21.850]every comprehensive plan that's
- [00:13:23.670]been written ever including the
- [00:13:25.420]ones
- [00:13:25.620]that i've written uh is always
- [00:13:27.510]there's that component that you
- [00:13:29.520]put in there that says it's
- [00:13:31.140]like here's all these these
- [00:13:32.850]detailed plans and by the way
- [00:13:34.690]at the end for all of this to
- [00:13:36.260]work you have
- [00:13:36.940]to have coordination
- [00:13:38.280]collaboration uh and to make
- [00:13:40.000]this a living document and
- [00:13:41.590]something that's that's
- [00:13:43.060]viable for your community
- [00:13:44.780]and so uh it's like yeah that
- [00:13:46.470]seems like the secret sauce
- [00:13:48.200]there and if you don't have
- [00:13:49.680]that
- [00:13:50.040]then the plans really don't
- [00:13:51.210]amount to too much so uh what
- [00:13:52.730]he said later on in that speech
- [00:13:54.940]was you
- [00:13:55.360]must be keep yourself steeped
- [00:13:57.020]in the character of the problem
- [00:13:58.760]you'll one day be called to
- [00:14:00.230]solve
- [00:14:00.660]for the plans to be worth
- [00:14:02.120]anything um and that's where
- [00:14:03.750]that planning process is so
- [00:14:05.380]important
- [00:14:06.100]so this is uh for me the
- [00:14:07.790]question was what does it look
- [00:14:10.120]like to be steeped in the
- [00:14:12.020]character of
- [00:14:13.120]the problems we're called to
- [00:14:14.640]solve um and for me this is uh
- [00:14:20.300]we're working with people all
- [00:14:22.040]the time and so you know if you're
- [00:14:25.220]steeped in what do people need
- [00:14:27.050]what are the assets that people
- [00:14:28.870]can bring to the table
- [00:14:30.240]um then that's sort of the
- [00:14:31.770]character of the problems we're
- [00:14:33.810]called to solve it's not as
- [00:14:35.390]much
- [00:14:35.780]in the data uh not as much in
- [00:14:38.020]the specific strategies that we
- [00:14:40.310]undertake or the best practices
- [00:14:42.740]um but we're
- [00:14:44.500]ultimately dealing with people
- [00:14:45.780]and changing situations and so
- [00:14:47.880]uh so for me i became really
- [00:14:50.100]interested in that side of
- [00:14:51.540]community engagement of how uh
- [00:14:53.400]how do we organize ourselves to
- [00:14:56.020]really
- [00:14:56.260]get things done to motivate
- [00:14:58.010]people to draw upon the gifts
- [00:14:59.860]that they have to give and that
- [00:15:01.620]they
- [00:15:01.780]want to contribute to the
- [00:15:02.830]community
- [00:15:03.300]so at seven nebraska we uh we
- [00:15:06.090]call this civic health um sort
- [00:15:09.160]of like a community that is
- [00:15:12.020]that is well connected
- [00:15:14.360]that's politically involved
- [00:15:15.880]that gets involved in
- [00:15:17.650]initiatives to help get things
- [00:15:18.860]done those are
- [00:15:19.480]communities that are civically
- [00:15:21.170]healthy and uh for the example
- [00:15:22.970]in the top picture there um the
- [00:15:25.870]people
- [00:15:26.040]preparing for uh trying to keep
- [00:15:27.900]the flood waters at bay you
- [00:15:29.400]know that's those are the times
- [00:15:31.160]that
- [00:15:31.320]we see it really when our
- [00:15:32.780]communities are at its best at
- [00:15:34.590]its best or when we come
- [00:15:36.020]together to do a
- [00:15:37.720]uh an initiative that took a
- [00:15:39.580]lot of um it takes a lot of
- [00:15:41.360]coordinating between uh
- [00:15:43.110]different people
- [00:15:44.220]maybe passing some kind of a a
- [00:15:46.530]ballot initiative you know
- [00:15:48.140]those are the efforts that take
- [00:15:50.300]a lot of
- [00:15:50.620]coming together and if you
- [00:15:52.180]haven't really built that base
- [00:15:53.980]of connection um it's going to
- [00:15:56.090]be
- [00:15:56.300]difficult to get those things
- [00:15:57.710]done you have to draw on
- [00:15:58.720]relationships so that's what we
- [00:16:01.740]talk about
- [00:16:02.220]with civic health
- [00:16:02.940]so today i'm going to go
- [00:16:06.110]through these four and think
- [00:16:09.780]about how do they relate to the
- [00:16:11.190]work that
- [00:16:11.420]we do as a community and
- [00:16:12.740]economic development
- [00:16:14.080]and how do we set the stage for
- [00:16:15.520]these
- [00:16:15.860]so just some background we just
- [00:16:18.880]released a civic health index
- [00:16:21.500]which i'm actually going to
- [00:16:22.500]drop in
- [00:16:22.900]the chat here if i can maybe i'll
- [00:16:25.930]do that after i'll do that at
- [00:16:27.130]the end it'll i don't want to
- [00:16:28.420]mess
- [00:16:28.700]up and navigate away from the
- [00:16:30.040]screen and then have have me
- [00:16:31.320]lose everything here so um so i'll
- [00:16:33.820]post that in the chat at the
- [00:16:35.570]end but uh we just updated this
- [00:16:37.110]with the help of the national
- [00:16:38.620]conference on citizenship and
- [00:16:40.330]the university of nebraska
- [00:16:41.830]public policy center um the uh
- [00:16:43.450]center of
- [00:16:43.940]public affairs research with
- [00:16:45.070]help from the weitz family
- [00:16:46.050]foundation and brian health
- [00:16:47.200]foundation
- [00:16:47.760]um if you want to know more
- [00:16:50.950]about methods ask me later
- [00:16:53.600]basically with some census data
- [00:16:55.840]and uh the
- [00:16:57.000]rural poll so we're definitely
- [00:16:58.210]appreciative of the rural poll
- [00:16:59.320]and all our university nebraska
- [00:17:00.720]folks on there um for uh for
- [00:17:02.840]the help with that so diving in
- [00:17:05.240]um social connectedness i
- [00:17:07.840]always
- [00:17:08.160]anytime i'm in a classroom or
- [00:17:09.680]with any group talking about
- [00:17:11.220]how it's really the foundation
- [00:17:12.950]of uh
- [00:17:13.800]of what we have to draw upon so
- [00:17:15.360]just for some brief background
- [00:17:17.070]info um in uh nebraska uh
- [00:17:22.040]spending
- [00:17:22.500]time with family and friends
- [00:17:23.840]frequently we're tenth in the
- [00:17:25.230]nation neighbors frequently
- [00:17:26.670]fifth in
- [00:17:27.060]the nation um and not too much
- [00:17:29.090]uh information on change but it
- [00:17:31.860]has been increasing um and then
- [00:17:35.660]time
- [00:17:35.940]with different people of
- [00:17:37.170]different backgrounds uh that's
- [00:17:38.720]where we don't do quite as well
- [00:17:40.140]uh compared
- [00:17:41.380]to the nation doing favors for
- [00:17:42.710]neighbors frequently
- [00:17:43.660]that's kind of a surprise um
- [00:17:45.660]that we wouldn't do as well
- [00:17:47.970]there but there's indication a
- [00:17:50.010]lot of people
- [00:17:50.460]do favors for neighbors infrequently
- [00:17:52.410]so like less uh you know once a
- [00:17:53.850]month or something like that
- [00:17:55.420]um this is the non-metro metro
- [00:17:59.390]breakdown for spending time
- [00:18:02.220]with someone from a different
- [00:18:03.580]background than yours um as you
- [00:18:05.980]might guess in the metro area a
- [00:18:08.560]lot more um
- [00:18:09.660]more frequency of getting
- [00:18:11.950]together with people from
- [00:18:13.520]a different background than in
- [00:18:14.940]the non-metro areas with uh i
- [00:18:17.420]think it was about 35 percent
- [00:18:20.560]not at all in the last year
- [00:18:22.290]spending time with a person of
- [00:18:24.360]a different different
- [00:18:25.650]background
- [00:18:26.080]so some of the priorities that
- [00:18:28.830]came out of the index was this
- [00:18:31.830]idea of like the infrastructure
- [00:18:33.440]of connection so that in our
- [00:18:34.700]communities there's the events
- [00:18:36.170]associations and places
- [00:18:37.440]where people build connection
- [00:18:39.080]so how can we support those and
- [00:18:40.770]also the bridging our social
- [00:18:42.800]connect uh
- [00:18:43.360]the people who bridge social
- [00:18:45.150]connections these are formal
- [00:18:47.030]and informal leaders um there
- [00:18:49.440]are
- [00:18:49.600]connectors and includers who
- [00:18:51.050]are sort of weaving that social
- [00:18:52.550]fabric in our communities and
- [00:18:54.770]bridging
- [00:18:55.360]networks so um if i can i
- [00:18:58.400]wanted to just discuss a little
- [00:19:02.550]bit you know a part of this
- [00:19:05.600]being steeped
- [00:19:06.400]in the in the uh nature of the
- [00:19:08.390]problems that we're called upon
- [00:19:10.750]to solve is knowing what are
- [00:19:13.200]our
- [00:19:13.200]strengths what are our assets
- [00:19:14.820]uh as people in community and
- [00:19:16.380]economic development um so uh i'd
- [00:19:19.600]like to feel free to open your
- [00:19:22.140]mics um and just want to get an
- [00:19:24.050]idea of what you feel are some
- [00:19:26.160]of
- [00:19:26.320]your strengths and assets in
- [00:19:27.860]social connection in your
- [00:19:29.140]communities what are the things
- [00:19:30.790]that you draw
- [00:19:31.520]upon the relationships that uh
- [00:19:33.620]or the bridgers of
- [00:19:34.810]relationships that you call
- [00:19:36.760]upon to to get things
- [00:19:38.000]done
- [00:19:43.200]i'll throw out a suggestion
- [00:19:45.780]here i guess daniel um i think
- [00:19:48.720]what we're talking about here
- [00:19:49.660]is probably
- [00:19:50.080]jenny's familiar with our
- [00:19:51.800]champions group that uh got
- [00:19:53.810]together with a you know just
- [00:19:55.760]people that
- [00:19:56.000]have been involved in the
- [00:19:57.090]community in the past and
- [00:19:58.170]involved a couple of new people
- [00:19:59.680]so
- [00:19:59.680]our champions group we haven't
- [00:20:01.340]gotten together as much with
- [00:20:02.860]our uh covid things but that
- [00:20:05.360]represents
- [00:20:06.480]everything from government to
- [00:20:08.580]public health to the community
- [00:20:10.780]to the community to the
- [00:20:12.220]community to the
- [00:20:13.040]government entities to some
- [00:20:14.780]other civic organizations
- [00:20:16.590]private citizens retired people
- [00:20:18.800]young people all of those
- [00:20:20.760]things to try to form a group
- [00:20:23.190]that looks toward the next 20
- [00:20:25.520]years or so
- [00:20:26.400]daniel i'd like to add in hemmingford
- [00:20:32.110]particularly
- [00:20:34.400]i think right now what we're
- [00:20:37.000]having is just a tremendous uh
- [00:20:39.820]youth impact um young adults
- [00:20:42.630]you
- [00:20:42.880]know 30-ish uh that are coming
- [00:20:45.040]back to hemmingford and opening
- [00:20:47.050]businesses and our main streets
- [00:20:49.040]filling up and it is incredible
- [00:20:51.350]and i'd like to think maybe the
- [00:20:53.410]fiber in our community has a
- [00:20:55.360]little bit to do with it but
- [00:20:56.780]mostly i think people have
- [00:20:58.200]realized they want to be back
- [00:20:59.910]home and so
- [00:21:00.960]that means opening businesses
- [00:21:02.700]so super excited about our
- [00:21:04.160]community right now
- [00:21:05.360]yeah so what does that look
- [00:21:08.300]like uh both for the champions
- [00:21:11.590]group and
- [00:21:12.720]joanie what you said um i mean
- [00:21:15.660]when people are coming back how
- [00:21:17.800]do they get linkedin
- [00:21:19.040]uh is it like they're drawing
- [00:21:20.510]on those relationships in the
- [00:21:22.010]past kind of that
- [00:21:22.880]they had had and they are
- [00:21:24.080]wanting to come back like how
- [00:21:25.500]do those things come about
- [00:21:26.880]you want to go mike
- [00:21:31.120]you take that one first i went
- [00:21:33.810]first last time johnny okay i'll
- [00:21:37.200]do it um i really truly believe
- [00:21:41.520]it's the connection of family
- [00:21:44.360]for hemmingford um i think our
- [00:21:47.360]school system is is just
- [00:21:49.590]tremendous
- [00:21:50.720]and of course that's young
- [00:21:52.700]families and so i think that
- [00:21:55.050]really coming back and and the
- [00:21:57.440]blessing our community has is a
- [00:21:59.500]business like ours a business
- [00:22:01.480]like farmers co-op
- [00:22:02.800]a business like the school
- [00:22:05.180]system that employ a lot of
- [00:22:07.560]people with good wages and
- [00:22:11.360]i think that's some keys for us
- [00:22:12.880]yeah um just a couple of points
- [00:22:17.630]there one of the data
- [00:22:20.560]indicators that we actually
- [00:22:22.160]didn't include
- [00:22:22.720]this time that we used that we
- [00:22:24.830]have in the past is um how many
- [00:22:26.960]people uh eat dinner with
- [00:22:28.800]with people in their household
- [00:22:30.500]you know they uh sit down
- [00:22:31.790]actually and spend the meal
- [00:22:33.360]together
- [00:22:34.160]uh nebraska typically is uh it
- [00:22:36.550]was like second in the nation
- [00:22:38.550]for that um but the vast
- [00:22:40.400]majority of
- [00:22:41.200]people sharing a meal with one
- [00:22:42.620]another um within their family
- [00:22:44.090]and so i think that's a really
- [00:22:45.520]important thing and i think
- [00:22:46.790]like you said you're seeing
- [00:22:48.080]that play out that connection
- [00:22:49.470]of family
- [00:22:50.000]plays out and has real benefits
- [00:22:52.550]for the whole community
- [00:22:54.560]well and i want to say one more
- [00:22:56.750]thing sorry daniel this is this
- [00:22:59.130]is key to our community too
- [00:23:01.440]and that is the compassion that
- [00:23:04.680]people have to give so we are
- [00:23:06.850]very uh uh community oriented
- [00:23:09.460]in
- [00:23:09.760]helping um
- [00:23:11.040]so you know so if something
- [00:23:13.470]happens good or bad people are
- [00:23:15.210]there to help because if they
- [00:23:16.720]know we
- [00:23:17.120]got to flourish together so we
- [00:23:19.400]really have um that feeling of
- [00:23:21.460]giving and like you've got to
- [00:23:23.360]have that
- [00:23:23.680]in the community you can't be
- [00:23:26.350]selfish right no and to add to
- [00:23:28.710]that um i find that positive uh
- [00:23:31.440]forward
- [00:23:32.560]looking leadership and
- [00:23:34.120]communications that come from
- [00:23:36.150]leaders that that look at those
- [00:23:38.200]positive things are so
- [00:23:40.880]helpful in moving everyone
- [00:23:43.640]together you know in a positive
- [00:23:45.550]way of joni always speaks
- [00:23:46.980]positive you
- [00:23:47.520]know that's just what she does
- [00:23:49.390]but you know that's catching as
- [00:23:51.490]well and so i i always uh
- [00:23:53.530]learned about
- [00:23:54.320]um think say do if you're
- [00:23:56.820]thinking those thoughts and
- [00:23:58.840]those positive thoughts and you're
- [00:24:00.280]talking
- [00:24:00.560]about them and then you're
- [00:24:02.040]doing it but it follows all the
- [00:24:03.710]way down the road everyone
- [00:24:04.880]who hears you talking those
- [00:24:06.630]things it just um creates more
- [00:24:08.520]of the same
- [00:24:10.720]um yeah absolutely it starts uh
- [00:24:14.320]sort of internally first
- [00:24:15.440]um someone else who what other
- [00:24:17.970]way does your community just in
- [00:24:20.290]a really concrete way
- [00:24:22.080]um sort of create those
- [00:24:24.150]connections that you're able to
- [00:24:26.570]draw upon later um i mean for
- [00:24:28.800]example i
- [00:24:29.760]feel like in potter they have
- [00:24:31.670]this group that um that meets
- [00:24:33.390]together at bags bar and it's
- [00:24:35.840]just a
- [00:24:36.080]real cross-section of the
- [00:24:37.420]community i feel like dawes
- [00:24:38.810]county joint planning is a
- [00:24:40.230]great
- [00:24:40.560]example of that it's sort of
- [00:24:41.940]cross-cutting standing
- [00:24:43.200]opportunity for everybody to
- [00:24:44.710]get
- [00:24:44.960]connected anything else that
- [00:24:47.080]just is really kind of a
- [00:24:48.690]standing opportunity to for
- [00:24:51.110]people to to
- [00:24:52.960]reconnect in your community
- [00:24:54.880]well there's heritage
- [00:25:04.830]celebrations in most of our
- [00:25:06.320]communities and
- [00:25:07.200]you know the willow tree
- [00:25:08.530]festivals and those kinds of
- [00:25:09.950]things
- [00:25:10.400]and i think those are important
- [00:25:12.640]parts of our community as well
- [00:25:13.840]yeah absolutely i'm not sure
- [00:25:17.840]this is marlin i'm not sure
- [00:25:20.110]this is i think it fits in
- [00:25:22.040]though is the leadership groups
- [00:25:25.360]that we
- [00:25:25.760]have in our communities like
- [00:25:27.450]the leadership scott's bluff
- [00:25:29.210]leadership shadron leadership
- [00:25:31.200]kimball i think that those are
- [00:25:33.170]those are those things that
- [00:25:34.980]help make those social
- [00:25:36.250]connections
- [00:25:36.880]because when i attended
- [00:25:38.460]leadership scott's bluff
- [00:25:40.240]i met people that i wouldn't
- [00:25:42.360]normally have ever come in
- [00:25:44.350]contact with but yet i still
- [00:25:46.480]have those
- [00:25:46.960]people you know and i mean if i
- [00:25:48.950]need something i pick up the
- [00:25:50.720]phone and i call them and we
- [00:25:52.600]still
- [00:25:52.800]have that connection yeah yeah
- [00:25:54.760]no that's that's exactly that
- [00:25:56.640]definitely fits in um yeah and
- [00:26:00.800]if you
- [00:26:00.960]didn't have an opportunity whoa
- [00:26:02.360]if you didn't have an
- [00:26:03.240]opportunity to make those
- [00:26:04.410]connections then
- [00:26:05.520]you can drop on them later uh
- [00:26:08.630]anybody
- [00:26:10.080]like to take a stab at
- [00:26:11.440]opportunity for growth in uh in
- [00:26:13.690]connection your community um
- [00:26:17.080]what's uh what's
- [00:26:18.080]maybe a threat to a project you're
- [00:26:19.980]trying to get done where there's
- [00:26:21.600]maybe not a social connection
- [00:26:23.120]or that communication breakdown
- [00:26:25.470]um what's uh where do you maybe
- [00:26:27.520]have some room to go and
- [00:26:29.120]um and it being truly
- [00:26:30.770]representative any thoughts
- [00:26:32.790]there
- [00:26:33.280]i think an opportunity for
- [00:26:36.180]growth in our valentine
- [00:26:38.720]community is
- [00:26:39.920]some type of a a new leadership
- [00:26:42.280]program would be one thing in
- [00:26:45.170]there um
- [00:26:47.280]i thought about two things i
- [00:26:49.190]could add to that but that's
- [00:26:50.600]the only one that came out
- [00:26:52.720]right there
- [00:26:53.120]but i'll i'll think of the
- [00:26:54.390]other one is i'm sure joni has
- [00:26:55.850]one or emily has something
- [00:26:57.180]maybe chelsea
- [00:26:58.080]has something from alliance in
- [00:26:59.980]there as well but i think our
- [00:27:01.660]if we had a
- [00:27:02.320]leadership program like she was
- [00:27:04.450]just saying that network of
- [00:27:06.320]people you can call on from the
- [00:27:08.240]community
- [00:27:09.760]that's really important yeah i'll
- [00:27:13.300]kind of jump in here i guess i'm
- [00:27:16.030]pretty new to this whole scene
- [00:27:17.920]but i guess uh in bassett me
- [00:27:19.820]myself is kind of being one of
- [00:27:21.890]those i'm kind of seeing an
- [00:27:23.440]opportunity
- [00:27:23.760]for growth for the younger
- [00:27:25.080]generations to kind of step
- [00:27:26.470]into those leadership
- [00:27:27.680]roles um we have a lot of
- [00:27:29.080]younger people kind of jumping
- [00:27:31.000]on to like city council and
- [00:27:32.640]other
- [00:27:32.880]boards and really getting
- [00:27:34.670]involved and being like what
- [00:27:36.850]can we do um how can we improve
- [00:27:38.660]and they want
- [00:27:39.600]to like you know do whatever
- [00:27:40.910]they can to help keep basset
- [00:27:42.220]alive and going and improving
- [00:27:43.840]so that's just
- [00:27:44.160]kind of something that i've
- [00:27:46.270]noticed within my first four
- [00:27:48.570]months of this job sure do you
- [00:27:52.590]have
- [00:27:52.720]any sense for how you encourage
- [00:27:54.390]that at this point like what
- [00:27:55.880]kinds of things um
- [00:27:57.360]uh would encourage the younger
- [00:27:59.840]generation to step into those
- [00:28:02.230]roles um i mean i always just
- [00:28:04.470]try to
- [00:28:04.720]like talk about it and invite
- [00:28:06.110]people and be like hey this is
- [00:28:07.470]what we're doing always try to
- [00:28:08.900]like you
- [00:28:09.440]know keep marketing it on
- [00:28:10.700]social media myself personally
- [00:28:12.350]because i'm friends with a lot
- [00:28:13.820]of
- [00:28:14.000]them and be like hey i'm doing
- [00:28:16.320]it it's cool you should do it
- [00:28:18.540]like i don't know i just always
- [00:28:20.560]try
- [00:28:20.800]to talk about it invite people
- [00:28:22.240]and kind of make it always keep
- [00:28:23.670]everything positive you know
- [00:28:25.200]you
- [00:28:25.360]can't always come at it like we
- [00:28:26.490]need to do this so you should
- [00:28:27.510]probably come and be like yeah
- [00:28:28.720]we're
- [00:28:28.880]doing this you know you should
- [00:28:30.420]definitely be involved with it
- [00:28:32.030]it's going to turn out great
- [00:28:33.600]you know we can only do it if
- [00:28:35.510]we work together yeah
- [00:28:37.070]absolutely be one of the cool
- [00:28:38.850]kids
- [00:28:39.280]yeah join the crew positive
- [00:28:42.340]peer pressure is always always
- [00:28:44.250]welcome positive peer pressure
- [00:28:45.760]i think emily makes a good
- [00:28:47.580]point there and i think we need
- [00:28:49.760]to as an opportunity for growth
- [00:28:52.240]the old guard needs to welcome
- [00:28:54.570]the new guard you know there
- [00:28:56.720]has to be a transition in
- [00:28:58.240]there and we can't continually
- [00:29:00.060]do things the way we've been
- [00:29:01.670]doing that we have to
- [00:29:02.880]be more inviting and more
- [00:29:04.610]welcoming to youth to become
- [00:29:06.480]involved in things yeah i think
- [00:29:08.560]that's
- [00:29:09.120]really good point because i
- [00:29:10.990]mean i've had to break through
- [00:29:13.070]that gate myself and just keep
- [00:29:15.190]you know
- [00:29:15.760]keep at it but i'd say that
- [00:29:17.100]that's definitely kind of a
- [00:29:18.610]change that is always going to
- [00:29:20.240]be
- [00:29:20.480]difficult for any and like any
- [00:29:22.320]community but i feel like it's
- [00:29:24.660]something that we all need to
- [00:29:26.000]you know keep in our back
- [00:29:27.640]pocket yeah i think if that's
- [00:29:29.640]where that leadership comes in
- [00:29:31.730]where if you
- [00:29:32.480]have a group of people with you
- [00:29:34.570]that you know it's like this
- [00:29:36.050]group here the rural rendezvous
- [00:29:38.030]group you
- [00:29:38.960]go out there and get beat up on
- [00:29:40.320]a day-by-day basis but every
- [00:29:41.670]two weeks we get a chance to
- [00:29:43.180]meet with
- [00:29:43.520]people of our own um thought
- [00:29:45.260]process for the most part and
- [00:29:47.080]it kind of re it can rejuvenate
- [00:29:49.040]you to go
- [00:29:49.520]out and do battle again i had
- [00:29:52.090]an email yesterday i think from
- [00:29:57.690]a small business person who was
- [00:30:00.080]looking to connect with other
- [00:30:02.320]small businesses in a you know
- [00:30:04.800]kind of like this you know how
- [00:30:06.060]do we get together and learn
- [00:30:07.260]from each other so this i think
- [00:30:08.580]was
- [00:30:08.800]an opportunity that i thought
- [00:30:11.660]was awesome um as something
- [00:30:14.310]that we can use to help
- [00:30:16.400]them connect as well as learn
- [00:30:18.620]and grow from
- [00:30:19.600]yeah these are great ideas um
- [00:30:24.680]especially that
- [00:30:27.680]these these places to get rejuvenated
- [00:30:30.520]the place where you can really
- [00:30:32.800]uh connect with
- [00:30:34.160]some peers who are sort of on
- [00:30:35.670]the same wavelength and then
- [00:30:37.250]the power of invitation
- [00:30:38.640]i think i've seen that over and
- [00:30:40.840]over again like uh even in my
- [00:30:43.450]church uh someone who really
- [00:30:45.920]loved
- [00:30:46.160]singing he was like why haven't
- [00:30:47.580]you been involved he's like
- [00:30:48.990]never been asked um so
- [00:30:51.120]just making that invitation is
- [00:30:53.920]so important so um spending a
- [00:30:56.210]lot of time here on social
- [00:30:58.400]social connection but i think
- [00:31:00.050]it's okay because i think that
- [00:31:01.590]that creation of that social
- [00:31:03.040]environment how we set the
- [00:31:04.230]stage as professionals in the
- [00:31:05.600]community is really important
- [00:31:07.080]so um
- [00:31:08.480]so thinking of your role in the
- [00:31:11.520]community our role sort of as a
- [00:31:13.200]um as a profession as an
- [00:31:15.440]industry
- [00:31:16.080]maybe um how do we set the
- [00:31:19.020]stage for connection our
- [00:31:21.190]communities could be some of
- [00:31:23.180]the ones that
- [00:31:23.600]you mentioned above but what's
- [00:31:26.360]really you know in your scope
- [00:31:27.930]what's what's uh what's in your
- [00:31:29.680]responsibility here i want to i
- [00:31:31.490]want to add this because this
- [00:31:33.600]is rural rendezvous this is
- [00:31:35.520]what it's
- [00:31:35.920]done for me is it gives me two
- [00:31:36.620]ways to connect with people and
- [00:31:37.420]i think it's really important
- [00:31:38.300]to
- [00:31:38.320]connect with people and i think
- [00:31:38.600]it's really important to
- [00:31:39.000]connect with people i think it's
- [00:31:39.280]really important to connect
- [00:31:39.650]with people and i think it's
- [00:31:40.010]really important to connect
- [00:31:40.350]with people
- [00:31:40.400]and i think it's really
- [00:31:40.960]important to connect with
- [00:31:41.220]people and i think it's really
- [00:31:42.040]important to connect
- [00:31:42.080]with people and i think it's
- [00:31:42.240]really important to connect
- [00:31:42.440]with people and i think it's
- [00:31:42.600]really important
- [00:31:42.880]to connect with people and i
- [00:31:43.300]think it's really important to
- [00:31:43.670]connect with people and i think
- [00:31:44.960]it's
- [00:31:44.960]really important to connect
- [00:31:45.350]with people and i think it's
- [00:31:45.710]really important to connect
- [00:31:46.020]with people
- [00:31:46.080]okay here's my arsenal of
- [00:31:47.590]people and most of the people
- [00:31:49.360]on here i called for that i
- [00:31:51.840]think what we
- [00:31:52.400]have to do as economic
- [00:31:53.660]developers is be in the know we
- [00:31:55.410]don't know everything but we
- [00:31:57.200]know who to
- [00:31:57.920]call that knows that and to me
- [00:32:00.370]if somebody young is starting
- [00:32:02.320]something i i'm just so excited
- [00:32:05.050]to
- [00:32:05.200]offer them you know star and scott's
- [00:32:07.340]bluff chelsea
- [00:32:08.160]chelsea um jenny you know
- [00:32:10.430]whoever might have
- [00:32:11.440]um jenny you know whoever might
- [00:32:11.440]have
- [00:32:11.440]um jenny you know whoever might

- [00:35:53.030]because they just
- [00:35:53.600]called me this morning because

- [00:35:55.520]had two people resign from the
- [00:35:55.520]board and
- [00:35:55.520]had two people resign from the
- [00:35:55.870]board and they were looking for
- [00:35:56.320]young people to
- [00:35:57.280]they were looking for young
- [00:35:57.280]people to
- [00:35:57.280]they were looking for young
- [00:35:57.620]people to join
- [00:36:08.160]join

- [00:36:11.550]oh okay well
- [00:36:12.240]no i didn't ask them that oh
- [00:36:12.240]okay well
- [00:36:12.240]no i didn't ask them that oh

- [00:36:13.680]i thought you said you they
- [00:36:14.260]asked you for young people and
- [00:36:14.930]i'm like oh wait a
- [00:36:15.360]for young people and i'm like
- [00:36:15.360]oh wait a
- [00:36:15.360]for young people and i'm like
- [00:36:15.530]oh wait a minute jamie's young
- [00:36:16.950]well i don't know
- [00:36:17.360]minute jamie's young well i don't
- [00:36:17.360]know
- [00:36:17.360]minute jamie's young well i don't
- [00:36:18.040]know if they thought i knew
- [00:36:18.580]other young
- [00:36:18.880]if they thought i knew other
- [00:36:18.880]young
- [00:36:18.880]if they thought i knew other
- [00:36:19.240]young people i actually tend to
- [00:36:20.340]know older
- [00:36:20.880]people i actually tend to know
- [00:36:20.880]older
- [00:36:20.880]people i actually tend to know
- [00:36:21.940]older people in the community
- [00:36:23.010]but
- [00:36:23.200]people in the community but
- [00:36:23.200]people in the community but
- [00:36:25.200]okay
- [00:36:25.600]okay
- [00:36:25.600]okay i do know that uh so the
- [00:36:26.920]chamber in
- [00:36:27.520]i do know that uh so the
- [00:36:27.520]chamber in
- [00:36:27.520]i do know that uh so the
- [00:36:27.740]chamber in chatham takes uh
- [00:36:28.960]chatham takes uh
- [00:36:28.960]chatham takes uh an hour in the
- [00:36:30.250]radio every every week and
- [00:36:31.600]an hour in the radio every
- [00:36:31.600]every week and
- [00:36:31.600]an hour in the radio every
- [00:36:32.310]every week and and uh
- [00:36:32.880]and uh
- [00:36:32.880]and uh does something really
- [00:36:34.110]cool she brings in
- [00:36:34.800]does something really cool she
- [00:36:34.800]brings in
- [00:36:34.800]does something really cool she
- [00:36:35.510]brings in guests they talk
- [00:36:36.050]about programs they
- [00:36:36.560]guests they talk about programs
- [00:36:36.560]they
- [00:36:36.560]guests they talk about programs
- [00:36:37.420]they you know that's um because
- [00:36:38.380]that radio is
- [00:36:39.760]you know that's um because that
- [00:36:39.760]radio is
- [00:36:39.760]you know that's um because that
- [00:36:40.540]radio is we have a really
- [00:36:41.140]unique radio that kind
- [00:36:41.760]we have a really unique radio
- [00:36:41.760]that kind
- [00:36:41.760]we have a really unique radio
- [00:36:41.830]that kind of serves as our
- [00:36:42.690]meeting place for
- [00:36:43.760]of serves as our meeting place
- [00:36:43.760]for
- [00:36:43.760]of serves as our meeting place
- [00:36:44.880]for a ton of stuff and that's
- [00:36:46.340]been a great
- [00:36:46.800]a ton of stuff and that's been
- [00:36:46.800]a great
- [00:36:46.800]a ton of stuff and that's been
- [00:36:47.040]a great way for her to
- [00:36:48.240]way for her to
- [00:36:48.240]way for her to to make
- [00:36:51.770]connections with groups
- [00:36:54.320]great well these are all uh i
- [00:36:55.830]think you
- [00:36:56.400]great well these are all uh i
- [00:36:56.400]think you
- [00:36:56.400]great well these are all uh i
- [00:36:57.020]think you hit
- [00:36:57.360]hit
- [00:36:57.360]hit hit a lot of good good
- [00:36:59.680]themes here um
- [00:37:01.760]hit a lot of good good themes
- [00:37:01.760]here um
- [00:37:01.760]hit a lot of good good themes
- [00:37:02.650]here um the other thing that's
- [00:37:03.600]just uh
- [00:37:04.640]the other thing that's just uh
- [00:37:04.640]the other thing that's just uh
- [00:37:05.590]one of the things we had um brian
- [00:37:06.880]seck
- [00:37:07.360]one of the things we had um brian
- [00:37:07.360]seck
- [00:37:07.360]one of the things we had um brian
- [00:37:08.040]seck from
- [00:37:08.240]from
- [00:37:08.240]from lincoln partnership for
- [00:37:10.090]economic
- [00:37:10.480]lincoln partnership for
- [00:37:10.480]economic
- [00:37:10.480]development on a webinar last
- [00:37:12.950]week, and he was talking about
- [00:37:14.820]how 70% of people find their
- [00:37:17.260]jobs
- [00:37:17.680]through a personal connection
- [00:37:19.610]of some kind. So he's saying,
- [00:37:21.510]how do we tell the neighbor
- [00:37:23.200]about
- [00:37:23.680]the better job? How do we use
- [00:37:25.690]those networks to provide that
- [00:37:27.830]information for people to get
- [00:37:30.000]connected, to not have an
- [00:37:32.470]excuse not to know about an
- [00:37:34.950]opportunity, which is really
- [00:37:37.890]great.
- [00:37:39.020]And then also, I think in some
- [00:37:40.380]of the work that I see you all
- [00:37:41.620]doing is those places of
- [00:37:43.620]connection
- [00:37:44.000]as well, and in maintaining
- [00:37:45.920]those events, those
- [00:37:47.360]opportunities to connect to,
- [00:37:49.550]that it's not
- [00:37:52.220]just a throwaway thing if a
- [00:37:55.110]long-standing community event
- [00:37:58.660]stops running. And so keeping
- [00:38:01.640]those running is a big piece of
- [00:38:03.320]keeping that social
- [00:38:04.480]infrastructure in your
- [00:38:05.840]communities.
- [00:38:07.560]All right. We are, I'm going to
- [00:38:10.330]blow through the rest of this
- [00:38:12.280]here. We can get some ideas on
- [00:38:14.420]it.
- [00:38:14.720]The next one that I mentioned
- [00:38:17.570]was confidence in institutions.
- [00:38:20.420]And the big piece that I want
- [00:38:22.280]to take away here, I'm going to
- [00:38:24.280]jump to the rural poll data.
- [00:38:26.210]The trend that you'll see is
- [00:38:28.840]increasing confidence in local
- [00:38:31.230]institutions that decreases as
- [00:38:33.620]you go federal, which probably
- [00:38:36.100]isn't a surprise to anybody,
- [00:38:37.850]but I think it, you know, you
- [00:38:39.600]can see public safety agencies,
- [00:38:41.660]public schools voting in
- [00:38:43.340]elections in systems in your
- [00:38:45.260]county, which we'll see how
- [00:38:47.200]that changes
- [00:38:48.140]after the last year. Those
- [00:38:49.690]perceptions could have changed
- [00:38:51.380]a little bit, but local
- [00:38:52.700]municipal
- [00:38:53.040]government, you know, and
- [00:38:54.990]similarly with our news
- [00:38:56.630]organizations too, local TV,
- [00:38:58.830]news, newspapers,
- [00:39:00.420]family, friends, and acquaintances
- [00:39:01.960]is where we get a lot of our
- [00:39:02.950]information from.
- [00:39:04.640]So the big points to mention
- [00:39:06.630]here is how do we leverage
- [00:39:08.440]these high confidence in local
- [00:39:10.340]institutions
- [00:39:10.840]to get things done? There's so
- [00:39:13.120]much, I think we're so fraught
- [00:39:15.240]about our sort of our national
- [00:39:17.420]politics at this moment, that
- [00:39:19.000]how can we use these, these
- [00:39:20.390]local opportunities to
- [00:39:21.600]reconnect people
- [00:39:22.860]who are, I think, wanting to
- [00:39:24.320]see progress on some of these
- [00:39:25.740]issues that they care about,
- [00:39:27.300]but they maybe don't even know
- [00:39:29.050]what's on their city council
- [00:39:30.790]agenda from week to week. They
- [00:39:32.580]don't
- [00:39:32.680]even know exactly all the
- [00:39:33.190]things that they're doing. So I
- [00:39:33.940]think it's a great question.
- [00:39:34.620]a city council does. So I think
- [00:39:36.840]there's a big opportunity there
- [00:39:39.050]to give people sort of the
- [00:39:40.900]meaning, the impact that they're
- [00:39:43.640]longing for. But it's that
- [00:39:45.920]confidence in institutions, it
- [00:39:49.070]starts at
- [00:39:49.700]the local level. So I'm going
- [00:39:52.340]to jump to this one here. Ways
- [00:39:56.600]that you build and maintain
- [00:39:59.140]confidence
- [00:40:00.480]in institutions or confidence
- [00:40:02.230]in your work, confidence in the
- [00:40:04.040]institutions that you work with.
- [00:40:05.940]What words of wisdom do you
- [00:40:07.800]have here? What's important for
- [00:40:10.260]us as community economic
- [00:40:11.760]development professionals? I
- [00:40:14.420]think a big thing is
- [00:40:16.020]communications. Because a lot
- [00:40:18.600]of times
- [00:40:19.360]the general public, like you
- [00:40:21.090]said, they don't know what's on
- [00:40:22.740]the agenda. And they think that
- [00:40:24.580]a lot of
- [00:40:24.920]these things are done in secret
- [00:40:26.290]doors, you know, with nobody
- [00:40:27.650]invited. And even though there
- [00:40:29.130]were
- [00:40:29.440]three public hearings on the
- [00:40:29.760]agenda, there's a lot of people
- [00:40:30.100]that were not invited. And so I
- [00:40:30.460]think
- [00:40:30.460]that's a big thing. And so I
- [00:40:30.460]think that's a big thing. And
- [00:40:30.460]so I think that's a big thing.
- [00:40:30.460]And so I
- [00:40:30.520]think that's a big thing. And
- [00:40:30.520]so I think that's a big thing.
- [00:40:30.520]And so I think that's a big
- [00:40:30.520]thing. And
- [00:40:30.580]you know, and all of a sudden,
- [00:40:31.860]they go, wow, where'd that come
- [00:40:33.260]from? Well, you know, so I
- [00:40:36.280]think
- [00:40:36.400]communications of doing radio
- [00:40:38.570]programs, newspaper articles,
- [00:40:41.250]yes, and even some social media
- [00:40:43.530]would
- [00:40:43.760]probably help in those aspects.
- [00:40:45.850]So I mean, just getting the
- [00:40:47.430]word out about some of those
- [00:40:49.040]things,
- [00:40:49.720]I think helps to, oh, I know
- [00:40:51.450]why they did that. Because, you
- [00:40:53.650]know, of this or that reason.
- [00:40:55.560]So
- [00:40:55.640]they're not just out there at
- [00:40:56.660]the coffee shop going, well,
- [00:40:57.830]they, them idiots did this or
- [00:40:58.820]that.
- [00:41:00.440]Communications would be one of
- [00:41:01.480]my ideals.
- [00:41:01.940]Yeah, we, we do a monthly
- [00:41:03.960]coffee, we've started those
- [00:41:06.070]back up now, finally, post
- [00:41:08.430]COVID. So,
- [00:41:09.780]but we move around to
- [00:41:11.500]businesses, and Alliance and
- [00:41:14.140]Hummingford, once a month,
- [00:41:16.760]or we'll invite a program in
- [00:41:18.740]like last month, the city
- [00:41:20.660]talked about ACE, your choice
- [00:41:22.970]gas selection
- [00:41:24.000]period, things like that. But I
- [00:41:26.510]mean, we've been in businesses
- [00:41:28.300]that I mean, people have lived
- [00:41:30.420]here their whole life and never
- [00:41:32.450]stepped foot in some of these
- [00:41:34.190]businesses. And so just kind of
- [00:41:36.300]providing that open door free
- [00:41:38.500]advertising for the business.
- [00:41:40.970]But anyway, so those are kind
- [00:41:43.550]of a new
- [00:41:43.980]thing. And we've been doing
- [00:41:44.910]those for three years. I was
- [00:41:46.420]gonna say like building good
- [00:41:50.510]morale, like
- [00:41:52.500]among leadership and like the
- [00:41:54.660]employees, because that
- [00:41:56.560]definitely reflects on the
- [00:41:58.550]residents, there's
- [00:42:00.400]places in the panhandle
- [00:42:02.600]currently that I would say, due
- [00:42:05.590]to leadership conflict and
- [00:42:07.160]stuff, it
- [00:42:07.880]definitely reflects poorly on
- [00:42:10.050]the community. And I think it
- [00:42:12.220]deters them from having
- [00:42:14.010]confidence in
- [00:42:14.980]them to make good decisions.
- [00:42:17.300]And like high turnover of those
- [00:42:19.430]positions as well also doesn't
- [00:42:21.300]give a lot of confidence in the
- [00:42:23.110]community to go to go to
- [00:42:24.480]leadership for issues or for
- [00:42:26.210]anything.
- [00:42:30.380]Yeah, that's a great point. I
- [00:42:34.190]think one of the things most
- [00:42:36.200]attractive in a community that
- [00:42:37.560]you
- [00:42:37.780]is when people are if it's
- [00:42:39.500]enjoyable to be to be in. And
- [00:42:41.550]if there's so much, if it's
- [00:42:43.750]just the
- [00:42:44.560]tension is like, is white hot
- [00:42:46.060]all the time, it's not gonna be
- [00:42:47.780]comfortable for people. So yeah,
- [00:42:49.560]how we how we build that good
- [00:42:51.300]morale. Do people feel
- [00:42:52.970]comfortable like they're be
- [00:42:54.900]able to raise an
- [00:42:55.660]issue without, without being
- [00:42:58.170]torn down?
- [00:43:00.360]I think that's important.
- [00:43:01.800]Don't look at Kimball for good
- [00:43:06.210]examples of this right now.
- [00:43:09.780]Look at us for the bad example.
- [00:43:11.460]I totally didn't have Kimball
- [00:43:14.720]in mind at all when I was
- [00:43:17.190]saying that, Jamie.
- [00:43:18.660]Perhaps someplace between here
- [00:43:22.330]and there.
- [00:43:23.480]So, so I'm Don Lease with
- [00:43:27.240]Nebraska Strong.
- [00:43:30.340]One of the things that we've
- [00:43:32.380]had to do is build connections
- [00:43:35.760]within communities that
- [00:43:37.250]basically
- [00:43:37.740]didn't exist, because we're
- [00:43:39.580]basically a new organization.
- [00:43:41.640]We're not going to be here
- [00:43:43.490]forever
- [00:43:43.900]either. So, so there's a
- [00:43:45.530]temporal aspect of what we've
- [00:43:47.380]done. One of the things I've
- [00:43:49.090]noticed with
- [00:43:50.060]people is never promise
- [00:43:51.980]something that you can't
- [00:43:54.000]deliver. They go in and want to
- [00:43:56.580]sell the sun, the
- [00:43:58.140]stars and the moon.
- [00:44:00.320]And they just, you know, in our
- [00:44:02.410]organization is, is an example
- [00:44:04.740]of one that doesn't have any
- [00:44:05.820]funding to deliver anything. So
- [00:44:08.350]we require partners throughout
- [00:44:10.510]the community if we want to do
- [00:44:11.940]anything.
- [00:44:12.560]So we've been very careful try
- [00:44:14.820]not to, to build, trying to
- [00:44:18.220]build non intrusive contacts.
- [00:44:20.750]We don't bug them and bug them
- [00:44:22.480]and bug them until they let us
- [00:44:23.710]in the door. We quietly go in
- [00:44:25.620]and explain what we're here for.
- [00:44:27.950]And I think this, this is what
- [00:44:30.300]we're here for. And I think
- [00:44:30.300]this, this is what
- [00:44:30.300]community development too.
- [00:44:31.940]Understanding all along that
- [00:44:34.240]there are communities it's
- [00:44:36.440]really
- [00:44:36.980]hard to get into and community
- [00:44:39.150]institutions too sometimes don't
- [00:44:41.430]want to let you in.
- [00:44:42.900]So those are just some of the
- [00:44:45.420]things we've you know again I
- [00:44:48.070]can't stress how much you need
- [00:44:50.820]to
- [00:44:51.140]be non-intrusive if people want
- [00:44:53.490]to be part of what you're doing
- [00:44:55.520]as a community resource
- [00:44:57.320]they'll choose to do that and
- [00:44:59.550]if you have integrity and
- [00:45:01.640]continue to approach them on a
- [00:45:04.140]non-intrusive basis that can
- [00:45:06.410]help. It isn't always the
- [00:45:08.540]answer to the problem
- [00:45:10.220]but that can certainly help. So
- [00:45:12.300]those are some of my thoughts.
- [00:45:14.360]Great thanks.
- [00:45:16.920]I'm going to keep moving along.
- [00:45:19.630]Jenny I don't know is there
- [00:45:21.420]anything we need to hit after
- [00:45:23.580]this?
- [00:45:24.260]Yeah we'll just do a wrap-up.
- [00:45:27.320]Okay well we'll I'll buzz
- [00:45:29.360]through the rest of this here.
- [00:45:31.650]So you know the other thing
- [00:45:34.180]the big piece is community
- [00:45:35.570]engagement which is where I
- [00:45:37.080]feel like the rubber hits the
- [00:45:38.540]road
- [00:45:38.860]and you can see most of these
- [00:45:41.200]in Nebraska have increased. We
- [00:45:43.960]do pretty well here in
- [00:45:45.800]volunteering
- [00:45:46.280]working with neighbors towards
- [00:45:47.780]something positive, attending a
- [00:45:49.380]public meeting,
- [00:45:50.240]you know providing these
- [00:45:51.750]opportunities to be involved
- [00:45:53.670]builds that attachment. It
- [00:45:55.630]builds that
- [00:45:56.240]practice of being a part of the
- [00:45:56.900]community. I think that's a
- [00:45:57.300]really good point.
- [00:45:57.320]Being connected, of working
- [00:45:59.130]together on something. So that
- [00:46:01.110]helps that's sort of the
- [00:46:03.280]practice for
- [00:46:04.160]the big moments when we need to
- [00:46:05.410]get something pulled together
- [00:46:06.750]really get something good done.
- [00:46:08.240]Moments of crisis you know if
- [00:46:10.780]you have if you have those
- [00:46:12.960]habits of engagement those will
- [00:46:14.760]those will pay off down the
- [00:46:16.230]road.
- [00:46:16.560]You can find these online. I'll
- [00:46:21.810]send the link.
- [00:46:23.920]Main thing here is focusing on
- [00:46:27.220]assets. I can't stress that
- [00:46:29.800]enough. That was something that
- [00:46:31.000]I've
- [00:46:31.320]just feel like in the last
- [00:46:32.410]couple of years I've really
- [00:46:33.590]come around to focusing on.
- [00:46:34.820]So much we focus on the
- [00:46:37.200]problems of what we don't have
- [00:46:40.260]but focusing on those assets
- [00:46:43.400]and
- [00:46:43.580]in particularly what people can
- [00:46:45.910]contribute and what that can
- [00:46:48.100]that what they're wanting to
- [00:46:50.040]give.
- [00:46:53.160]I think one of the things that
- [00:46:54.360]I've learned over the last
- [00:46:55.460]couple of years, and I think
- [00:46:57.080]this is
- [00:46:57.360]one of the things I've learned
- [00:46:58.390]over the last couple of years,
- [00:46:59.630]and I think this is one of the
- [00:47:00.770]things that
- [00:47:01.100]I've learned over the last
- [00:47:02.380]couple of years, and I think
- [00:47:03.390]this is one of the things that
- [00:47:04.060]I've learned over the last
- [00:47:04.600]couple of years,
- [00:47:04.600]is that people are engaged in
- [00:47:06.270]their community if they feel
- [00:47:06.730]like they have something of
- [00:47:07.180]value to contribute.
- [00:47:07.660]So providing them that that
- [00:47:09.590]feeling that yes we do value
- [00:47:10.720]what you have, we value what
- [00:47:11.710]you have to contribute and we're
- [00:47:11.890]going to give you an
- [00:47:11.980]opportunity to do it.
- [00:47:12.140]But it starts with knowing what
- [00:47:14.300]it is that people have to
- [00:47:15.640]contribute, what way do people
- [00:47:16.940]want to be involved.
- [00:47:17.880]So that's that's been a huge
- [00:47:20.140]piece for me.
- [00:47:21.140]And then those formal and
- [00:47:22.490]informal opportunities as well.
- [00:47:24.460]I think we are getting the gist
- [00:47:29.190]of this but so I'm going to
- [00:47:31.590]move on to political
- [00:47:32.660]involvement because I think
- [00:47:33.580]there's some interesting things
- [00:47:34.890]here too.
- [00:47:35.380]In political involvement, we
- [00:47:38.910]talk about voting in local
- [00:47:41.130]elections, being registered to
- [00:47:43.330]vote, discussing politics with
- [00:47:45.400]neighbors, family and friends,
- [00:47:47.160]that civil discourse, all of
- [00:47:50.380]these are increasing
- [00:47:50.380]in the in the last few years.
- [00:47:53.520]So that's all good news.
- [00:47:56.260]Civil discourse, maybe not
- [00:47:57.730]surprisingly, do it more with
- [00:47:59.330]family and friends than
- [00:48:00.240]neighbors tend to avoid
- [00:48:01.720]discussing political issues
- [00:48:03.380]with people we're not as close
- [00:48:05.050]to.
- [00:48:05.480]And the other thing I wanted to
- [00:48:07.350]point out here is that this is
- [00:48:10.740]competitive election races from
- [00:48:15.170]2000 to 2020.
- [00:48:17.220]You can see at the state,
- [00:48:18.700]federal level, pretty much 100%
- [00:48:19.620]of people are voting in local
- [00:48:19.620]elections.
- [00:48:19.620]You can see at the state,
- [00:48:19.870]federal level, pretty much 100%
- [00:48:20.240]of people are voting in local
- [00:48:20.510]elections.
- [00:48:20.760]You can see at the state,
- [00:48:20.970]federal level, pretty much 100%
- [00:48:21.310]of people are voting in local
- [00:48:21.550]elections.
- [00:48:21.760]So there's, you know, more than
- [00:48:23.570]one person running for one seat,
- [00:48:25.380]so you get down to some of the
- [00:48:26.860]more local levels even state
- [00:48:28.410]Board of Education, and then
- [00:48:30.240]definitely community colleges,
- [00:48:33.080]you know, community colleges in
- [00:48:34.440]the state of Nebraska over the
- [00:48:35.260]past 20 years, about 25 to 30%
- [00:48:36.460]of those races were competitive.
- [00:48:39.760]So you get down to some of the
- [00:48:39.810]more local levels even state
- [00:48:39.890]Board of Education, and then
- [00:48:40.010]definitely community colleges,
- [00:48:40.080]you know, community colleges in
- [00:48:40.170]the state of Nebraska over the
- [00:48:40.260]past 20 years, about 25 to 30%
- [00:48:40.360]of those races were competitive.
- [00:48:40.760]So you get down to some of the
- [00:48:40.900]more local levels even state
- [00:48:41.100]Board of Education, and then
- [00:48:41.290]definitely community colleges,
- [00:48:41.540]you know, community colleges in
- [00:48:41.760]the state of Nebraska over the
- [00:48:41.950]past 20 years, about 25 to 30%
- [00:48:42.230]of those races were competitive.
- [00:48:49.620]to run for office, to be
- [00:48:50.940]involved in their community in
- [00:48:52.690]that way? How are we creating a
- [00:48:55.200]political environment locally
- [00:48:56.870]that's encouraging of people to
- [00:48:58.520]run for office rather than
- [00:48:59.860]thinking
- [00:49:00.440]like, oh God, I'm going to not
- [00:49:02.110]touch that with a 10 foot pole.
- [00:49:04.150]So that's, that's something
- [00:49:05.730]else.
- [00:49:06.260]So what, in that political
- [00:49:09.940]involvement, getting people to
- [00:49:13.020]be involved,
- [00:49:14.700]um, what are some ways that,
- [00:49:16.800]that you as professionals set
- [00:49:18.980]the stage for that? Um,
- [00:49:21.140]how do you encourage, uh, good
- [00:49:23.440]political involvement,
- [00:49:25.310]productive political
- [00:49:26.930]involvement?
- [00:49:28.180]What are your, what are your
- [00:49:31.560]tips and tricks?
- [00:49:33.300]I'm just going to throw this
- [00:49:38.710]out. I think at one point,
- [00:49:44.440]um,
- [00:49:44.700]Hemingford might've been kind
- [00:49:46.410]of on the fringe of Kimball's
- [00:49:48.830]situation. Um, it was bad,
- [00:49:50.780]every bit of morale, every bit
- [00:49:53.020]of leadership, um, no cohesiveness.
- [00:49:56.120]And I think it just came a time
- [00:49:59.060]where the voters kind of
- [00:50:00.370]stepped up a little bit. And
- [00:50:01.880]when the people ran, they, they
- [00:50:03.680]took charge,
- [00:50:04.360]kind of, uh, changed the whole
- [00:50:07.060]scope. And we have a really,
- [00:50:09.660]really phenomenal group now. So
- [00:50:12.760]I do
- [00:50:13.480]think that politically,
- [00:50:14.580]leadership for our village has
- [00:50:15.970]made a huge difference, huge
- [00:50:17.360]impact.
- [00:50:17.820]You know, we mentioned this
- [00:50:22.850]before in a different topic,
- [00:50:24.100]but I think one of the, most of
- [00:50:26.980]the people, communities that
- [00:50:29.310]host local leadership
- [00:50:31.090]development programs would hope
- [00:50:32.690]that going through the program
- [00:50:34.880]would create awareness of, of,
- [00:50:36.700]uh, using trends, objective
- [00:50:39.100]issues. And then they would
- [00:50:40.840]take those new found skills to
- [00:50:42.400]then, you know, run for a
- [00:50:44.040]public
- [00:50:44.460]office, um, as a council or
- [00:50:46.620]board, school board, city
- [00:50:47.800]council. And I would say, you
- [00:50:50.480]know, starting
- [00:50:51.000]with youth leadership
- [00:50:52.250]development, um, you know, even
- [00:50:54.220]at the high school level, um,
- [00:50:56.480]and in addition
- [00:50:57.900]to adult or community level
- [00:50:59.910]leadership development programs
- [00:51:02.460]is one way to encourage not
- [00:51:05.010]only political
- [00:51:05.900]involvement, but more objective
- [00:51:07.490]political involvement. In other
- [00:51:08.920]words, not the city
- [00:51:09.860]council person who runs because
- [00:51:11.940]they're mad because the
- [00:51:13.140]ordinance,
- [00:51:14.340]you know, they don't want to
- [00:51:15.640]mess up their sister's junk
- [00:51:17.400]yard.
- [00:51:17.400]So I'm just, you know what I'm
- [00:51:19.260]saying?
- [00:51:19.660]We don't want those, we don't,
- [00:51:20.880]we don't want these, uh, one-sided
- [00:51:23.130]biased folks running for office.
- [00:51:24.900]We want folks that are, uh, try
- [00:51:27.030]to do their homework before
- [00:51:29.020]taking a stand on an issue.
- [00:51:30.280]And, you know, one thing that I
- [00:51:33.250]attended can handle partnership
- [00:51:35.080]did a, um, it was an amazing,
- [00:51:38.410]um, board masters training
- [00:51:40.920]program, and that's exactly
- [00:51:43.040]right, Sean.
- [00:51:44.220]It was to, I mean, if we could
- [00:51:46.390]have, if we could get it to
- [00:51:47.840]come to our community and
- [00:51:48.720]people would attend it, it, it
- [00:51:50.310]rises the level of why they're
- [00:51:52.660]applying to run for the board.
- [00:51:54.100]It was a great leadership thing.
- [00:51:56.440]If you find somebody that has
- [00:51:59.600]an interest in a particular
- [00:52:02.680]subject that your city council,
- [00:52:05.160]your county commissioner,
- [00:52:06.280]somebody is, is working on, it's,
- [00:52:08.330]it's good to take them to that
- [00:52:09.950]meeting or encourage them to
- [00:52:11.560]attend the meeting and become
- [00:52:13.340]involved in that.
- [00:52:14.100]And then from there, they might,
- [00:52:14.470]they learn a little bit more
- [00:52:14.770]about what that group is all
- [00:52:15.070]about.
- [00:52:15.300]And then from there, they might,
- [00:52:16.960]they learn a little bit more
- [00:52:18.280]about what that group is all
- [00:52:19.610]about.
- [00:52:20.260]And maybe they get a little
- [00:52:21.650]feeling that, yeah, maybe one
- [00:52:23.340]person can make a difference
- [00:52:24.850]with opinion here or there.
- [00:52:26.540]So, um, just encouraging people
- [00:52:28.720]or taking them to meetings and
- [00:52:30.590]stuff.
- [00:52:31.240]Yeah.
- [00:52:32.360]That's a great idea.
- [00:52:34.420]Great.
- [00:52:36.780]Well, thanks everybody.
- [00:52:37.940]Um, again, uh, I'll drop the, I'll
- [00:52:41.370]drop the link to the full.
- [00:52:43.980]Full index.
- [00:52:44.700]We can peruse this information
- [00:52:46.640]for yourself, um, in a more
- [00:52:48.430]formal setting or in like a
- [00:52:50.090]present in more like
- [00:52:51.060]presentation mode, more than a
- [00:52:53.240]conversational as we've been
- [00:52:54.200]doing.
- [00:52:54.500]Um, we'll go through that data.
- [00:52:55.920]I'm happy to come speak to any
- [00:52:58.220]local Rotary group or, uh, Qantas
- [00:53:00.300]or community group, you know,
- [00:53:02.500]anything like that.
- [00:53:04.220]Happy to fill a program slot.
- [00:53:06.000]Um, uh, also we'll, uh, we'll
- [00:53:08.120]be doing our second monthly
- [00:53:09.910]webinar next week.
- [00:53:11.460]This one's about, um,
- [00:53:12.660]connecting across.
- [00:53:13.860]Diversity is being a, uh, a big,
- [00:53:16.490]uh, piece of that social
- [00:53:17.890]connectedness that people see
- [00:53:19.800]is, uh, that we've seen in the
- [00:53:21.560]civic health index this last
- [00:53:22.700]year.
- [00:53:23.080]Um, so that'll be, uh, next
- [00:53:25.360]Tuesday, um, at 11 AM mountain
- [00:53:28.270]time.
- [00:53:28.980]Um, and then, uh, some other
- [00:53:31.320]things that, that, uh, we'll be
- [00:53:33.650]able to offer at civic Nebraska.
- [00:53:36.220]Like I said, I work a lot with
- [00:53:37.230]youth.
- [00:53:37.640]So local government inaction
- [00:53:39.370]days, local civic health days.
- [00:53:41.420]Um, so maybe beyond government
- [00:53:43.230]even.
- [00:53:43.740]How do local volunteers, what's
- [00:53:45.030]their relationship to the
- [00:53:46.100]community?
- [00:53:46.680]Like, um, I can do
- [00:53:47.960]presentations and workshops for
- [00:53:50.270]anybody, uh, service learning
- [00:53:51.980]opportunities for higher ed and
- [00:53:53.940]then, um, that civic asset
- [00:53:55.260]mapping.
- [00:53:55.740]We've sort of dipped our toes
- [00:53:57.340]in that water and, uh, in Ashland
- [00:53:59.270]and in Harvard with a couple of
- [00:54:01.090]interns and, um, and then in
- [00:54:03.280]Potter, and I'm going to be
- [00:54:04.060]working with Julia and big
- [00:54:05.290]Springs as well for, um,
- [00:54:07.120]wrapping in civic engagement
- [00:54:08.920]into their comprehensive
- [00:54:09.700]planning process.
- [00:54:10.540]So feel free to, uh, to get in
- [00:54:12.840]touch.
- [00:54:13.620]With me, um, anytime, and, um,
- [00:54:16.980]thanks for the work you do and,
- [00:54:18.700]uh, hopefully this has spurred
- [00:54:20.690]some ideas for how you can, uh,
- [00:54:22.260]for the importance of weaving
- [00:54:23.900]that engagement, that
- [00:54:25.220]connection into the work that
- [00:54:26.860]you do.
- [00:54:27.540]So thanks everybody.
- [00:54:28.620]Awesome.
- [00:54:33.900]We are so glad that you're
- [00:54:35.650]going to be such a great
- [00:54:37.260]resource in the region that you
- [00:54:39.410]are.
- [00:54:40.020]That's excellent.
- [00:54:40.920]All right.
- [00:54:43.500]And, uh, the last, next couple
- [00:54:46.080]of minutes, I'm going to tell
- [00:54:48.370]you that in two weeks, we have,
- [00:54:50.870]um, a legislative update, um,
- [00:54:53.420]from Deb Cottier and I had a
- [00:54:55.530]comment from Mike about still
- [00:54:58.130]looking for information.
- [00:55:00.220]I think, um, on explain again,
- [00:55:02.910]what we're looking for there,
- [00:55:05.360]the, the health care piece,
- [00:55:07.950]Mike, um, just information.
- [00:55:12.120]If there's somebody out there
- [00:55:13.060]that.
- [00:55:13.380]Can provide answers to health
- [00:55:15.800]care workforce, um, for
- [00:55:19.020]whatever it might be long-term
- [00:55:20.750]care facilities, uh, hospitals,
- [00:55:22.990]clinics, all of those kinds of
- [00:55:24.810]things.
- [00:55:25.460]It seems like a lot of people I've
- [00:55:27.160]talked to have been shorthanded,
- [00:55:28.950]um, agencies have taken a lot
- [00:55:30.520]of our young people because
- [00:55:31.970]they can make big bucks going
- [00:55:33.490]somewhere for a while.
- [00:55:35.020]I don't know how long, um, that
- [00:55:37.570]this pandemic will last for
- [00:55:39.750]that.
- [00:55:40.500]Uh, I think we're on the verge
- [00:55:42.310]of hiring.
- [00:55:43.260]A consulting firm to help us
- [00:55:44.920]address some of these issues
- [00:55:46.660]out of the Minneapolis area, uh,
- [00:55:48.970]and kind of find out to do some
- [00:55:50.480]studies on what's going to
- [00:55:52.060]happen with baby boomers as
- [00:55:53.930]they get into that age where
- [00:55:55.980]they might need some more care
- [00:55:58.850]and what kind of a workforce
- [00:56:00.800]and where is that workforce
- [00:56:01.930]going to come from to take care
- [00:56:03.390]of them as that increases, or
- [00:56:05.220]are we going to ship our
- [00:56:07.010]elderly off to the big city to
- [00:56:09.540]live in a nursing home their
- [00:56:11.140]final years?
- [00:56:13.140]So, I think that's something
- [00:56:15.010]that we really need to be, um,
- [00:56:17.220]looking at here.
- [00:56:17.860]So, I tasked Jordan and Sean to
- [00:56:19.760]think about it a little bit,
- [00:56:21.360]and they're, uh, they're
- [00:56:22.860]helping me, me think about that,
- [00:56:24.840]too.
- [00:56:25.420]But if you guys have any ideas
- [00:56:27.100]of people who might have, uh,
- [00:56:29.050]good resources or, or links or,
- [00:56:30.840]or have good information to
- [00:56:32.450]bring forward, uh, let me know,
- [00:56:34.490]and we'll try and follow up on
- [00:56:36.120]that and get something solid
- [00:56:37.810]for you guys to, uh, uh,
- [00:56:39.710]interact with.
- [00:56:43.020]I have had an enjoyable morning
- [00:56:44.950]here, and you guys have shared
- [00:56:46.970]some great stuff.
- [00:56:48.140]So, other than, if you don't
- [00:56:50.010]have anything else, uh, we'll
- [00:56:52.020]see you next two weeks.
- [00:56:53.700]Thanks, Jenny.
- [00:56:56.720]Bye.
- [00:57:01.100]Bye.
- [00:57:01.120]Bye.
