- [00:00:00.000]Morning, Jamie, Paula.
- [00:00:20.180]Oh, you're muted. That's okay.
- [00:00:26.740]So, let's see. Jamie figured
- [00:00:28.570]out her Cinco de Mayo
- [00:00:30.160]background.
- [00:00:30.920]So, we go to choose a virtual
- [00:00:34.870]background.
- [00:00:37.040]I had to download one. I didn't
- [00:00:42.190]see any.
- [00:00:42.780]I don't see it in there either.
- [00:00:44.320]That were loaded.
- [00:00:45.640]Look at you go.
- [00:00:48.520]Filters. Oh, wait. There's a
- [00:00:55.050]filter.
- [00:00:56.740]Yeah, there's some kind of
- [00:00:58.990]party filters that would work,
- [00:01:00.990]probably.
- [00:01:01.600]I was trying to figure out,
- [00:01:03.580]Jenny, how do you download
- [00:01:05.610]custom filters?
- [00:01:06.980]I just search on Google and
- [00:01:11.570]find them.
- [00:01:13.360]There's usually a program you
- [00:01:15.020]got to run.
- [00:01:15.800]Okay.
- [00:01:16.640]I was seeing that you can kind
- [00:01:18.880]of do it through Snapchat, but
- [00:01:21.200]I can figure that out on my
- [00:01:22.720]phone, probably, but not my
- [00:01:24.540]computer.
- [00:01:25.440]Yes.
- [00:01:26.740]Snapchat also has a bunch that
- [00:01:28.870]play well with it or, I don't
- [00:01:30.670]know.
- [00:01:31.320]There.
- [00:01:32.100]Jodi has an actual hat.
- [00:01:34.280]Oh, and Jamie, I love your
- [00:01:36.470]background so much.
- [00:01:38.360]I love it.
- [00:01:39.860]Except my earrings keep
- [00:01:41.360]disappearing.
- [00:01:42.520]I love it.
- [00:01:44.140]And Jenny, your parrot. Oh, my
- [00:01:46.120]goodness. How fun is that?
- [00:01:47.680]Oh, thank you.
- [00:01:48.780]Margaritaville.
- [00:01:49.760]That's it.
- [00:01:51.320]So, there's a super fun thing
- [00:01:54.740]happening.
- [00:01:56.740]It's happening down at the Westside
- [00:01:58.160]Event Center, formerly the
- [00:01:59.310]Country Club and Alliance.
- [00:02:00.620]They're doing a margarita and
- [00:02:03.040]bottomless chip night.
- [00:02:05.240]And so, you pay a certain fee
- [00:02:06.840]and you get your margarita and
- [00:02:08.510]bottomless chips for as long as
- [00:02:10.280]you're there.
- [00:02:11.400]And then if you want another
- [00:02:12.650]margarita, you'll have to
- [00:02:14.080]purchase it.
- [00:02:14.660]But it's going to be outside.
- [00:02:15.900]It's going to be really fun.
- [00:02:16.940]So, cool thing.
- [00:02:18.060]Yeah.
- [00:02:25.980]I'd like to welcome Ishmael Dweikot
- [00:02:29.120]to our session today.
- [00:02:31.300]He is joining us, I assume,
- [00:02:33.780]from Lincoln.
- [00:02:35.280]He is a professor of agronomy
- [00:02:37.350]and horticulture.
- [00:02:39.000]And I found this great book on
- [00:02:41.360]hemp production in Nebraska.
- [00:02:43.580]And I thought, oh, you guys
- [00:02:45.270]were wanting to know this stuff.
- [00:02:47.440]So, I thought we were going to
- [00:02:49.530]invite him to talk a little bit
- [00:02:51.610]about hemp production in
- [00:02:53.450]Nebraska.
- [00:02:54.400]There's a couple of different
- [00:02:55.400]uses.
- [00:02:55.800]And maybe how well does it grow
- [00:02:58.050]and where do we process it and
- [00:03:00.220]stuff.
- [00:03:01.040]So, you know, Ishmael, we have
- [00:03:02.480]this group of people there.
- [00:03:03.900]There's a huge variety of
- [00:03:05.700]people on from mostly western
- [00:03:07.790]Nebraska, but a few maybe not.
- [00:03:10.240]And Valentine.
- [00:03:12.200]And I got more people coming in.
- [00:03:14.180]I got one from Lincoln coming
- [00:03:15.430]in here.
- [00:03:15.940]So, there are people from all
- [00:03:17.370]over the state, literally.
- [00:03:18.960]Okay.
- [00:03:19.860]Good to have you all.
- [00:03:22.100]It is very good.
- [00:03:24.520]Thank you.
- [00:03:25.040]I think we've got most of who
- [00:03:26.980]was said they would be on today.
- [00:03:29.440]And we wanted to celebrate the
- [00:03:31.260]fact that this is Cinco de Mayo.
- [00:03:33.280]Oh, I see the hat.
- [00:03:35.640]Wear the hat.
- [00:03:36.940]Johnny has the hat.
- [00:03:38.160]Yeah, I know.
- [00:03:38.980]Who else?
- [00:03:39.660]Yeah, that's it.
- [00:03:40.600]So, we're all having a little
- [00:03:42.270]fun practicing with our Zoom
- [00:03:43.950]skills.
- [00:03:44.580]It's very fun.
- [00:03:45.560]Oh, Jamie, that's such a
- [00:03:46.670]beautiful background.
- [00:03:47.760]That is so lovely.
- [00:03:48.760]Oh, yeah.
- [00:03:50.000]Jenny, too.
- [00:03:50.960]So, Ishmael, do you want to
- [00:03:53.870]share?
- [00:03:55.040]Do you want to share a screen
- [00:03:55.960]at all today?
- [00:03:56.520]Well, sure, I do, but I thought
- [00:04:01.630]that you guys, whatever
- [00:04:03.040]question you have about him,
- [00:04:06.630]what
- [00:04:07.720]I'll do, I'm going to go ahead
- [00:04:09.070]and just give you some
- [00:04:10.050]background, and if we need
- [00:04:12.360]screen,
- [00:04:12.780]we'll share a screen.
- [00:04:13.680]My name is Ishmael Duwakar.
- [00:04:16.280]I'm a professor in agronomy and
- [00:04:17.640]horticulture.
- [00:04:18.500]I've been working with him
- [00:04:20.570]since 2015.
- [00:04:25.040]We started working with the
- [00:04:26.880]Canadian-Italian hemp because
- [00:04:29.450]the 2014 farm bill said that
- [00:04:33.020]if we are going to work with
- [00:04:35.000]hemp, we have to use certified
- [00:04:37.350]seed from overseas.
- [00:04:39.180]So, we did, and we planted the
- [00:04:43.080]hemp at Mead here, which is
- [00:04:47.270]about 40 miles northeast of
- [00:04:50.680]Lincoln.
- [00:04:51.280]And to my surprise...
- [00:04:55.040]I was surprised that hemp
- [00:04:56.570]flower within 45 days, because
- [00:05:00.680]when you bring hemp from the
- [00:05:02.610]long-day climate,
- [00:05:03.720]like Canada and Europe, our
- [00:05:05.500]days are not as long as the
- [00:05:08.120]Canadian.
- [00:05:09.360]So, hemp being a short-day
- [00:05:13.500]species, recognize the length
- [00:05:17.100]of the day and start flowering
- [00:05:19.830]before it reaches full maturity,
- [00:05:21.700]which is bad because it's...
- [00:05:23.900]you're not going to get it.
- [00:05:25.040]You're not going to get full
- [00:05:26.050]yield if the hemp start flowering
- [00:05:28.320]when it's still young.
- [00:05:29.220]So, my main focus working with
- [00:05:34.030]hemp is mostly breeding,
- [00:05:36.480]breeding and genetics.
- [00:05:37.680]I try to get some hemp,
- [00:05:40.150]especially from around Nebraska,
- [00:05:44.360]because this hemp here has been...
- [00:05:46.220]you know, been in existence
- [00:05:48.790]since 1850 at least in Nebraska.
- [00:05:55.040]So, year in and year out, the
- [00:05:58.180]weak plant died and the strong
- [00:06:01.150]plant survived during the
- [00:06:03.650]drought and the insect and
- [00:06:05.600]disease pressure.
- [00:06:06.500]So, I thought that, hey, this
- [00:06:09.150]would be a good source to do
- [00:06:11.150]any breeding to provide or to
- [00:06:14.480]introduce varieties that could
- [00:06:17.350]grow in Nebraska.
- [00:06:19.200]The only thing we need to do is
- [00:06:20.790]just to clean them up because
- [00:06:22.390]these are wild hemp.
- [00:06:23.740]We call them ditchweed.
- [00:06:25.040]They are mostly fiber-oriented
- [00:06:29.280]or grain type.
- [00:06:31.540]They have very low THC, tested
- [00:06:34.570]some that are almost zero THC,
- [00:06:37.610]have two to three percent CBD.
- [00:06:40.840]So, they are good fiber
- [00:06:45.150]varieties.
- [00:06:47.780]Some of them are good for grain,
- [00:06:50.150]but they just need to be
- [00:06:51.780]cleaned up and developed to...
- [00:06:55.040]hopefully produce more yield
- [00:06:56.930]and more fiber.
- [00:06:58.080]So, that's what my main focus
- [00:07:01.110]for the past five years.
- [00:07:03.840]When the 2014 Farm Bill passed,
- [00:07:07.510]we were able to do research
- [00:07:09.760]freely at the University of
- [00:07:12.170]Nebraska with no problem and
- [00:07:14.490]with not many restrictions.
- [00:07:17.080]And last year, the legislators
- [00:07:20.070]here passed a law saying that
- [00:07:23.500]university scientists...
- [00:07:25.040]should be treated as the
- [00:07:27.370]farmers.
- [00:07:28.040]So, we have to apply for a
- [00:07:30.140]license.
- [00:07:31.200]We have to be subjected to all
- [00:07:33.560]the rules and regulations in
- [00:07:35.810]terms of testing.
- [00:07:37.240]Which hinders our ability to do
- [00:07:40.780]research because for each site
- [00:07:44.320]you want to do research, you
- [00:07:47.470]have to apply for a separate
- [00:07:49.070]license.
- [00:07:49.780]And that cost about $800 to do
- [00:07:52.990]that.
- [00:07:55.040]So, if I have two or three
- [00:07:56.730]sites at Mead for tests for
- [00:07:58.490]drought and for natural use
- [00:08:00.400]efficiency, for spacing, then I
- [00:08:03.830]have to have enough money to
- [00:08:07.050]cover this license and in
- [00:08:09.800]addition, I have one for the
- [00:08:10.920]greenhouse.
- [00:08:11.500]So, I can't really afford that.
- [00:08:14.040]So, I'm not planning on doing
- [00:08:16.290]any research this year at Mead,
- [00:08:18.720]which is very bad because that
- [00:08:20.970]affects the farmers in Nebraska.
- [00:08:23.700]Because if we do not really...
- [00:08:25.040]do research to benefit the
- [00:08:27.050]farmers, who is going to do it?
- [00:08:29.900]How the farmer is going to get
- [00:08:31.510]information on how to grow the
- [00:08:33.200]crop?
- [00:08:33.780]So, I am hoping that some days,
- [00:08:37.090]Nebraska will wake up and start
- [00:08:40.440]recognizing that hemp is a good
- [00:08:44.040]crop.
- [00:08:45.080]So, we do research on plant
- [00:08:50.680]spacing also, population.
- [00:08:55.040]Nitrogen application and phosphorous.
- [00:09:00.040]If you are growing hemp for
- [00:09:03.770]fiber, we recommend that you
- [00:09:06.850]plant at least 300,000 seeds
- [00:09:10.050]per acre.
- [00:09:11.040]It has to be so dense so the
- [00:09:13.090]plants will just grow up to be
- [00:09:15.640]8 to 10 feet tall and harvest
- [00:09:19.580]it before it starts flowering.
- [00:09:22.940]To give you a maximum quality
- [00:09:24.320]of fiber.
- [00:09:25.040]If you are growing it for grain,
- [00:09:29.040]we recommend about 100,000
- [00:09:32.690]plants per acre and spaced at
- [00:09:36.040]20 to 30 inch between the rows
- [00:09:40.040]and 2 inches within the row.
- [00:09:44.040]And that will give you about 1,500
- [00:09:47.370]pounds of seed if you are
- [00:09:49.380]growing it for grain.
- [00:09:51.040]For fiber, if you have 300,000
- [00:09:54.240]plants.
- [00:09:55.040]You will get about 1,500 pounds
- [00:09:58.080]of good fiber.
- [00:09:59.040]So, that's...
- [00:10:01.040]If you are growing it for CBD,
- [00:10:04.440]we planted here in the field
- [00:10:07.040]and we planted it.
- [00:10:09.040]Density ranges from 2,500
- [00:10:11.830]plants to 5,000 plants per acre.
- [00:10:15.040]And that will give you about 1
- [00:10:17.470]pound of dry matter for each
- [00:10:20.840]plant.
- [00:10:22.040]That will give you about...
- [00:10:25.040]2,000 to 3,000 pounds of
- [00:10:29.750]biomass.
- [00:10:31.040]So, that's...
- [00:10:33.040]For Nebraska, for Western
- [00:10:35.530]Nebraska, I think you could
- [00:10:37.520]grow hemp for CBD.
- [00:10:39.040]We do not recommend growing
- [00:10:40.930]hemp for CBD in Central and
- [00:10:42.750]East Nebraska.
- [00:10:44.040]Especially outside.
- [00:10:46.040]You could grow it anywhere if
- [00:10:47.760]you are growing it in a
- [00:10:49.030]greenhouse.
- [00:10:50.040]But outside, it's...
- [00:10:52.040]We have so many...
- [00:10:53.040]So much...
- [00:10:55.040]Ditch weed in here.
- [00:10:57.040]And that's going to affect your...
- [00:11:01.040]Quality and concentration of...
- [00:11:05.040]Cannabinoid or CBD.
- [00:11:07.040]I think I have a slide here
- [00:11:09.030]showing that.
- [00:11:10.040]Let me see.
- [00:11:12.040]Yeah, let me see.
- [00:11:16.040]Let's see if I could share the
- [00:11:18.940]screen and see what...
- [00:11:22.040]Yeah.
- [00:11:23.040]So, this is...
- [00:11:44.040]I don't know if you could see
- [00:11:45.690]this one here.
- [00:11:47.040]Do you see the slides in here I'm
- [00:11:48.490]showing?
- [00:11:49.040]Yes.
- [00:11:50.040]Okay.
- [00:11:51.040]So, if you look to the right,
- [00:11:53.040]it show you that it's hemp for
- [00:11:55.680]CBD that has no seed on it.
- [00:11:58.040]And the one in the left, you
- [00:11:59.860]could see that it's total CBD
- [00:12:02.170]concentration when it has
- [00:12:04.630]pollen in it.
- [00:12:06.040]And that will go from bottom of
- [00:12:09.010]the plants, the blue, top of
- [00:12:11.480]the plants where it's that
- [00:12:13.040]orange one.
- [00:12:15.040]And that's the total.
- [00:12:16.040]You could see that you lose
- [00:12:17.790]more than half percent of your
- [00:12:19.680]CBD concentration.
- [00:12:21.040]So, you have a lot of seed set
- [00:12:27.300]on your plants.
- [00:12:32.040]This one here, this is...
- [00:12:35.040]Let me see if I could do that
- [00:12:39.880]differently.
- [00:12:43.040]Let's see.
- [00:12:44.040]I'll put this one here.
- [00:12:46.040]I can show the slide in here.
- [00:12:49.040]Okay.
- [00:12:50.040]So, here it's on the top, that's
- [00:12:53.490]hemp for CBD grown at mid-2019.
- [00:12:58.040]And you could see this is about
- [00:12:59.820]2,500 plants per acre.
- [00:13:02.040]And the plant reaches the same
- [00:13:03.890]height as corn.
- [00:13:05.040]And that's...
- [00:13:07.040]When we harvested this one, we
- [00:13:08.210]had to get...
- [00:13:09.040]We were able to get about 2
- [00:13:11.720]pounds per plant's dry weight.
- [00:13:15.040]So, if you have 2,500 plants,
- [00:13:18.070]that's 5,000 pounds of the...
- [00:13:19.040]Bounds of the biomass.
- [00:13:23.040]The one in the bottom, this is...
- [00:13:26.040]Behind me, it's the hemp from a
- [00:13:28.290]sewer that I collected.
- [00:13:30.040]And we are trying to purify it
- [00:13:32.410]and clean it to develop
- [00:13:34.190]varieties from it.
- [00:13:36.040]That's hemp for grain type.
- [00:13:39.040]The one on the left, the bottom
- [00:13:42.250]left, it's showing you the hemp
- [00:13:45.160]for grain compared to the hemp
- [00:13:47.500]for CBD.
- [00:13:48.040]So, this is our attempt to grow
- [00:13:52.230]hemp in Nebraska.
- [00:13:55.040]This one at the top, actually,
- [00:13:57.010]the CBD, we had no additional
- [00:14:00.160]irrigation.
- [00:14:01.040]So, this is just rain feed.
- [00:14:04.040]And that's planted the 1st of
- [00:14:08.650]June.
- [00:14:10.040]We added 80 pounds of nitrogen.
- [00:14:14.040]That's it.
- [00:14:15.040]No phosphorus, no potassium.
- [00:14:17.040]Because the soil has plenty of
- [00:14:18.890]it in Nebraska.
- [00:14:20.040]We had a lot of phosphorus in
- [00:14:22.100]our soil.
- [00:14:23.040]So, that's what you get.
- [00:14:25.040]So, does not require so much
- [00:14:27.680]irrigation like corn.
- [00:14:30.040]Does not require also as much
- [00:14:34.700]nitrogen as corn.
- [00:14:38.040]This slide here, we have the
- [00:14:40.010]one, the CBD I showed you.
- [00:14:42.040]And we have 2 plantings.
- [00:14:45.040]One June 7.
- [00:14:46.040]One June 27.
- [00:14:48.040]The one in the red is June 27.
- [00:14:51.040]The one in the white is June 7.
- [00:14:54.040]And you could see that when you
- [00:14:57.630]plant that early, you have more
- [00:15:01.270]biomass, higher yield in terms
- [00:15:04.630]of the total plants and the
- [00:15:07.230]stem.
- [00:15:08.040]But also, you are going to have
- [00:15:10.760]more seed on the plant.
- [00:15:13.040]This is CBD plant.
- [00:15:15.040]Because we have lots of ditchweed
- [00:15:18.030]in here.
- [00:15:19.040]We have a high percentage of
- [00:15:21.720]seed set on the plant.
- [00:15:24.040]And that's, as I mentioned,
- [00:15:25.040]reduce the CBD concentration.
- [00:15:29.040]If you plant late, then the
- [00:15:32.510]amount of seed set is lower.
- [00:15:34.040]Because the higher
- [00:15:35.540]concentration of pollen in
- [00:15:37.340]Nebraska starts middle of June
- [00:15:39.550]all the way until the end of
- [00:15:41.390]July.
- [00:15:42.040]So, if you want to plant late,
- [00:15:42.440]you have to wait until the end
- [00:15:42.820]of July.
- [00:15:43.040]So, if you want to plant late,
- [00:15:43.490]you have to wait until the end
- [00:15:43.820]of July.
- [00:15:44.040]So, if you want to plant hemp
- [00:15:46.190]for CBD, you have to try to
- [00:15:48.160]manipulate your planting to
- [00:15:50.310]avoid the higher concentration
- [00:15:52.730]of the pollen.
- [00:15:54.040]So, you could either plant end
- [00:15:57.120]of June, or if you could plant
- [00:15:59.650]very early in May, you may be
- [00:16:02.290]able to escape the pollen.
- [00:16:05.040]Or you could plant also what we
- [00:16:06.450]call it now, auto-flowering.
- [00:16:08.040]There are species or varieties
- [00:16:11.520]of...
- [00:16:13.040]cannabis or the hemp called
- [00:16:16.130]auto-flowering that flower
- [00:16:19.250]within 60 days.
- [00:16:21.040]And it's not dependent on the
- [00:16:23.790]day length.
- [00:16:25.040]So...
- [00:16:28.040]Ismael, can you tell me how
- [00:16:30.300]long does each of those
- [00:16:31.930]different crops take to grow?
- [00:16:34.040]So, if it's for CBD, when is
- [00:16:37.630]that harvested?
- [00:16:39.040]So, you could see here on this
- [00:16:40.930]slide for CBD.
- [00:16:42.040]So, you could see here on this
- [00:16:44.610]slide for CBD.
- [00:16:46.040]These are different, seven
- [00:16:47.280]different varieties of hemp for
- [00:16:48.680]CBD.
- [00:16:49.040]These are different, seven
- [00:16:51.110]different varieties of hemp for
- [00:16:53.540]CBD.
- [00:16:54.040]The last five are hybrids and
- [00:16:55.400]the first two are not hybrids.
- [00:16:57.040]The last five are hybrids and
- [00:16:57.440]the first two are not hybrids.
- [00:16:58.040]It starts flowering within 85
- [00:17:01.360]to 100 days.
- [00:17:03.040]And then you need to add about
- [00:17:05.410]four weeks after that for
- [00:17:06.860]harvesting.
- [00:17:08.040]And then you need to add about
- [00:17:08.420]four weeks after that for
- [00:17:08.750]harvesting.
- [00:17:09.040]So, that would be 130 days.
- [00:17:10.040]So, that would be 130 days.
- [00:17:11.040]So, that would be 130 days.
- [00:17:12.040]Four months, four and a half
- [00:17:12.580]months to harvest.
- [00:17:13.040]Four months, four and a half
- [00:17:13.580]months to harvest.
- [00:17:14.040]And also that depends on the
- [00:17:14.680]varieties.
- [00:17:15.040]And also that depends on the
- [00:17:15.660]varieties.
- [00:17:16.040]And also that depends on the
- [00:17:16.910]varieties.
- [00:17:17.040]Some varieties are shorter than
- [00:17:17.740]the other, like you see in here.
- [00:17:18.040]Some varieties are shorter than
- [00:17:18.560]the other, like you see in here.
- [00:17:19.040]Some varieties are shorter than
- [00:17:19.510]the other, like you see in here.
- [00:17:20.040]Some varieties start blooming
- [00:17:20.760]at 87 days.
- [00:17:21.040]Some varieties start blooming
- [00:17:21.650]at 87 days.
- [00:17:22.040]Some varieties start blooming
- [00:17:22.650]at 87 days.
- [00:17:23.040]And some start blooming 10 days,
- [00:17:23.650]10 days after.
- [00:17:24.040]And some start blooming 10 days,
- [00:17:24.650]10 days after.
- [00:17:25.040]And some start blooming 10 days,
- [00:17:25.650]10 days after.
- [00:17:26.040]So, there are differences in
- [00:17:26.600]terms of variety.
- [00:17:27.040]So, there are differences in
- [00:17:27.600]terms of variety.
- [00:17:28.040]So, there are differences in
- [00:17:28.680]terms of variety.
- [00:17:29.040]after so the differences in
- [00:17:30.970]terms of variety but it's in
- [00:17:32.820]general it's about four months
- [00:17:34.840]to harvest if you are growing
- [00:17:37.240]it for fiber then you'll
- [00:17:39.240]harvest within 70 days
- [00:17:41.560]and what do we how do we
- [00:17:43.760]harvest those or where do we
- [00:17:45.690]take those i guess that my
- [00:17:47.900]my real question is where can
- [00:17:49.570]we process that stuff is there
- [00:17:51.540]anywhere close to us in western
- [00:17:53.000]nebraska colorado as close as
- [00:17:57.350]denver maybe yep yep that's it
- [00:18:00.710]we don't have anything in nebraska
- [00:18:04.580]actually and is there an outlet
- [00:18:07.780]for both the cbd and the fiber
- [00:18:10.930]um to process both of those
- [00:18:13.520]well it's uh you could harvest
- [00:18:16.950]your uh the hemp for cbd on the
- [00:18:20.220]farm there are different ways
- [00:18:22.690]of
- [00:18:22.880]harvesting
- [00:18:22.980]it uh let me see if i have a
- [00:18:26.250]slide in here showing i don't
- [00:18:29.550]know if i do have a slide for
- [00:18:32.240]it or not
- [00:18:32.860]you could if you have a small
- [00:18:36.530]acreage you could harvest these
- [00:18:40.080]plants by hand and process them
- [00:18:43.220]in
- [00:18:43.360]your facilities if you have
- [00:18:46.130]larger acreage then you have
- [00:18:48.860]you have to buy special harvesters
- [00:18:52.510]for
- [00:18:52.960]uh hemp there are special one
- [00:18:56.040]for fiber there are some for
- [00:18:57.880]grain combine and there are
- [00:18:59.940]some for cbd
- [00:19:00.920]uh fish enterprises in github
- [00:19:04.580]nebraska have provide all of
- [00:19:08.040]these you could either rent or
- [00:19:10.720]lease or buy
- [00:19:11.480]them uh unfortunately we don't
- [00:19:14.300]have any processing facilities
- [00:19:16.850]for the fiber or the grain in
- [00:19:20.080]nebraska
- [00:19:20.840]so you have to
- [00:19:22.940]uh take them over to denver or
- [00:19:25.100]oregon or north carolina
- [00:19:27.080]pennsylvania they have uh seed
- [00:19:29.740]processing facilities
- [00:19:31.860]i know they are trying to build
- [00:19:34.550]that one in minnesota for fiber
- [00:19:37.320]some farmers really ship their
- [00:19:41.490]stuff to be processing to canada
- [00:19:44.400]because they have a lot of
- [00:19:46.420]uh hemp growing in canada they
- [00:19:48.730]were about 50 years ahead of us
- [00:19:51.480]so
- [00:19:52.920]they have the uh ability to
- [00:19:56.250]process hemp for uh fiber
- [00:19:59.860]but jump in guys i want you to
- [00:20:03.930]ask the questions that are you're
- [00:20:08.890]thinking about i've got a
- [00:20:11.930]question
- [00:20:12.860]just uh jump in yes um thanks
- [00:20:16.620]ismael so what are the
- [00:20:18.090]applications you had mentioned
- [00:20:20.480]uh the fiber
- [00:20:21.940]and cbd i think most of us know
- [00:20:23.860]what those applications are but
- [00:20:26.370]what are some of the um
- [00:20:28.640]applications for the fiber i've
- [00:20:30.560]heard some people mixing the
- [00:20:32.280]fiber and concrete or what are
- [00:20:35.760]they're okay thank you yeah
- [00:20:37.700]there you go there is uh
- [00:20:39.040]you could uh hemp plant it's
- [00:20:43.290]let me see if i have a picture
- [00:20:46.620]of the stock in here okay
- [00:20:51.920]see that's the hemp for fiber
- [00:20:54.620]the bottom right you could see
- [00:20:57.340]the outside it's the fiber that's
- [00:21:00.320]that's where they extract this
- [00:21:03.100]one you could use it for making
- [00:21:05.570]robes making clothes
- [00:21:07.520]making uh any textile you need
- [00:21:14.340]any so several applications for
- [00:21:17.140]the fiber
- [00:21:17.920]the outside you could see that
- [00:21:20.170]the fiber in here on the
- [00:21:21.900]in this picture the one in the
- [00:21:24.710]middle it's called herd h-u-r-d
- [00:21:27.980]and this one
- [00:21:29.760]can be grinded at different
- [00:21:33.330]sizes could be used for uh hempcrete
- [00:21:39.010]let me see where's the hempcrete
- [00:21:40.800]in
- [00:21:40.920]here where you take the this
- [00:21:43.980]one here the the one you grind
- [00:21:46.900]and then you mix it with gypsum
- [00:21:48.810]and water
- [00:21:49.520]and you could make building
- [00:21:51.370]blocks
- [00:21:51.880]and you could make building
- [00:21:52.670]blocks
- [00:21:52.900]you could build houses from it
- [00:21:54.380]the egyptian used it 10 000
- [00:21:57.620]years ago
- [00:21:58.340]so it's not new it's been used
- [00:22:01.660]for building in china and
- [00:22:03.740]egypt long long time ago so
- [00:22:08.630]that's one uh outlet for the
- [00:22:11.780]inner part what we call it here
- [00:22:15.460]also what you could use it for
- [00:22:17.770]they grind it and you could use
- [00:22:20.090]it for animal bedding
- [00:22:21.860]okay for absorbent if you want
- [00:22:26.730]to absorb if you have oil
- [00:22:28.850]contamination you could use
- [00:22:30.400]that
- [00:22:30.680]water to absorb all the oil
- [00:22:33.800]from it this is example of
- [00:22:36.880]houses that are made from him
- [00:22:41.440]wood okay and the hempwood is
- [00:22:44.240]supposed to be excellent
- [00:22:46.590]because it's good insulin so
- [00:22:48.740]you could
- [00:22:49.160]isolate the insulation provide
- [00:22:51.120]good insulation for the houses
- [00:22:53.030]so you won't lose
- [00:22:54.100]so much heat or cool air when
- [00:22:57.210]you use it so that's there are
- [00:23:00.560]people who are growing it for
- [00:23:03.340]in china using it for houses
- [00:23:05.450]either the grain you could
- [00:23:07.500]extract the oil from the grain
- [00:23:09.900]and then
- [00:23:10.580]there are several applications
- [00:23:13.410]for it you could use it for
- [00:23:15.590]biodiesel
- [00:23:19.140]you could use it to produce
- [00:23:20.860]paint plastic
- [00:23:23.300]oil for eating shampoos so
- [00:23:28.130]there are thousands and
- [00:23:30.010]thousands of products that you
- [00:23:32.470]could
- [00:23:32.980]make from the hemp oil and the
- [00:23:36.510]hemp seed that you could eat
- [00:23:39.940]you could so yes we've got a
- [00:23:43.800]lot of
- [00:23:44.020]economic development folks on
- [00:23:45.840]the line so i i realize there's
- [00:23:47.590]lots of applications for
- [00:23:49.120]the grain but which ones um
- [00:23:51.720]have proven the most profitable
- [00:23:53.950]i should say uh if you if you
- [00:23:56.880]if you've
- [00:23:57.440]heard which which of these
- [00:23:58.630]applications have proven the
- [00:24:00.000]most profitable well and that's
- [00:24:02.320]it
- [00:24:02.320]depends on if you have a
- [00:24:03.960]processing tool a process the
- [00:24:06.130]seed example to produce shampoo
- [00:24:08.560]and oil and
- [00:24:09.360]if you have processing in the
- [00:24:11.850]basket to extract the oil from
- [00:24:14.440]it that will give you about 50
- [00:24:17.970]to 100 g
- [00:24:19.100]gallons of oil and that's that's
- [00:24:22.300]a about 25 a gallon so that's a
- [00:24:25.680]lot of money uh you could sell
- [00:24:29.740]it as a hemp heart which is
- [00:24:32.100]very easy to do and that's you
- [00:24:35.020]could sell it to about four or
- [00:24:37.640]five
- [00:24:37.980]dollars a down and if you have
- [00:24:41.120]12 to 1500 pounds per acre that's
- [00:24:45.960]good money uh fiber if you are
- [00:24:49.080]a
- [00:24:49.080]growing fiber organic fiber
- [00:24:51.580]that's about three four hundred
- [00:24:54.080]dollars a ton
- [00:24:55.240]i think that the easiest way
- [00:24:58.810]you could say that to prove in
- [00:25:02.090]here it's the hemp heart and
- [00:25:04.600]hemp seed
- [00:25:05.560]for now and if you have a
- [00:25:07.850]breast you could produce hemp
- [00:25:10.890]oil and sell it the health
- [00:25:14.210]markets
- [00:25:19.060]i have an interesting story um
- [00:25:27.810]my son uh we are farmers and
- [00:25:30.150]ranchers and my my son left to
- [00:25:32.170]go to
- [00:25:32.520]the university of vermont um to
- [00:25:35.190]study uh a different type of
- [00:25:37.460]agriculture and so he went and
- [00:25:40.080]he did that for a year and they
- [00:25:42.000]were just on the cusp at the
- [00:25:43.810]university to start their hemp
- [00:25:46.020]research in vermont in 2016 and
- [00:25:46.020]they were just on the cusp at
- [00:25:46.020]the university to start their
- [00:25:46.040]hemp
- [00:25:46.040]research in vermont in 2016 and
- [00:25:47.170]they were just on the cusp at
- [00:25:48.010]the university to start their
- [00:25:48.750]hemp
- [00:25:49.040]after the farm bill so when he
- [00:25:51.240]came home his whole desire was
- [00:25:53.610]to get his dad to start hemp
- [00:25:56.000]farming here in western nebraska
- [00:25:57.890]and his dad's planted better
- [00:25:59.510]every crop so he said i just
- [00:26:00.980]don't
- [00:26:01.460]know if i'm up for this you
- [00:26:03.480]know so it was about a month
- [00:26:05.000]and a half after he got back
- [00:26:07.040]the university
- [00:26:07.680]out here at our research and
- [00:26:09.620]extension center started
- [00:26:11.970]process with seeing if they
- [00:26:13.430]could grow
- [00:26:14.260]some hemp out here so he kind
- [00:26:15.880]of was just behind the curveball
- [00:26:17.540]a little bit but we haven't
- [00:26:19.020]started doing that yet well i
- [00:26:21.390]mean it's not hard to grow it
- [00:26:22.880]you know it's him can grow
- [00:26:24.400]anywhere in
- [00:26:25.580]the world except in the arctic
- [00:26:27.640]you and you could grow it in
- [00:26:29.370]europe it's been grown in china
- [00:26:33.020]russia
- [00:26:33.580]for hundreds and hundreds of
- [00:26:35.780]years europe also we are start
- [00:26:38.220]growing it here in the united
- [00:26:39.930]states
- [00:26:40.540]so it's an easy crop to grow it's
- [00:26:43.430]an excellent grab for rotation
- [00:26:46.460]with cool
- [00:26:49.000]corn and soybean
- [00:26:50.540]this one here to show you that
- [00:26:54.340]it's a hemp seed has about 30
- [00:26:56.890]percent of its oil and about 25
- [00:27:00.260]percent protein so it's an
- [00:27:02.340]excellent food and feed crop we
- [00:27:04.800]are trying to i mean at least
- [00:27:07.340]the
- [00:27:07.680]fda now trying to work on the
- [00:27:10.880]allowing us to use hemp seed
- [00:27:14.110]and hemp biomass for animal
- [00:27:17.330]feed
- [00:27:18.980]they haven't give us the green
- [00:27:21.870]light yet but it's they are
- [00:27:24.000]trying to work on it to see if
- [00:27:27.260]we could
- [00:27:27.660]do research on it so i think
- [00:27:30.700]that's a really great piece
- [00:27:32.600]because you know we're always
- [00:27:34.700]using a different kind of byproduct
- [00:27:36.990]um you know we've fed our
- [00:27:38.640]cattle you know potatoes that
- [00:27:40.420]were
- [00:27:40.700]out out of date i guess you
- [00:27:42.720]would call it well i mean yeah
- [00:27:45.040]so that would be exciting to
- [00:27:47.190]have another
- [00:27:48.060]opportunity for people well
- [00:27:49.330]especially the hemp seed you
- [00:27:50.470]could use it for a chicken feed
- [00:27:52.820]duck and
- [00:27:53.300]chicken feed because it's very
- [00:27:55.430]high in protein and oil that's
- [00:27:57.500]an excellent feed for them and
- [00:28:01.700]also
- [00:28:02.100]hemp seed contain high
- [00:28:04.290]concentration of omega-6 and
- [00:28:07.470]omega-3 in a ratio of two to
- [00:28:10.420]one which is an
- [00:28:11.700]excellent ratio for a human
- [00:28:13.940]food you can't find that's i
- [00:28:16.130]mean in that many crops i mean
- [00:28:18.040]it's not
- [00:28:18.040]an excellent crop so
- [00:28:19.040]so also hemp uh it's being used
- [00:28:30.220]in russia and other uh places
- [00:28:33.580]as a bioremediation crop to
- [00:28:36.640]clean up
- [00:28:37.040]your soil if you have so many
- [00:28:41.160]contaminants in your soil you
- [00:28:43.030]could grow him year in and year
- [00:28:44.890]out and then that will uh
- [00:28:48.020]absorb
- [00:28:48.020]all these uh cadmium and cesium
- [00:28:51.470]and all other contaminants from
- [00:28:54.380]the soil so that's a good an
- [00:28:56.720]excellent bioremediation crop
- [00:28:59.380]and also it's uh it's good and
- [00:29:03.040]it's bad it's bad if you are
- [00:29:06.020]growing
- [00:29:06.500]hemp for cbd in a contaminated
- [00:29:08.880]soil the hemp plant is going to
- [00:29:11.270]absorb all this contaminants
- [00:29:13.780]and it's going to be
- [00:29:14.940]concentrated in the flower bud
- [00:29:18.020]you cannot sell the crop like
- [00:29:19.710]this in california because they
- [00:29:21.330]have regulation on
- [00:29:22.460]the amount of cadmium and zinc
- [00:29:26.280]that could be present in the
- [00:29:30.590]flower bud so
- [00:29:31.560]so you're going to make sure
- [00:29:33.970]that before you plant your crop
- [00:29:36.300]to test the soil and see how
- [00:29:38.280]much
- [00:29:38.660]contaminants or herbicide
- [00:29:40.860]residue on it before you plant
- [00:29:43.430]it otherwise you cannot sell it
- [00:29:45.760]really
- [00:29:48.000]in a regulate regulated market
- [00:29:49.700]like california and colorado
- [00:29:52.540]also do you think nebraska is
- [00:29:55.460]getting anywhere close to um
- [00:29:58.700]you know opportunities to have
- [00:30:01.540]it
- [00:30:01.700]being able to be sold for you
- [00:30:04.990]know the cdb and and those
- [00:30:07.150]things or do you have any idea
- [00:30:09.560]well i
- [00:30:09.740]mean i know farmers here in
- [00:30:11.710]blacksmith that they grow him
- [00:30:13.850]for cbd and they process it on
- [00:30:15.990]their farm
- [00:30:16.660]and they are selling it
- [00:30:17.980]so yeah you could grow the hemp
- [00:30:21.660]for cbd
- [00:30:22.620]there are a few farms in here
- [00:30:25.080]they could they processed it
- [00:30:27.320]and then
- [00:30:27.860]and some of them sell it on
- [00:30:29.990]their farm some of it
- [00:30:31.780]after the processing sell it in
- [00:30:35.460]different states but yeah and
- [00:30:38.150]nebraska you could
- [00:30:39.800]grow hemp and process it for cbd
- [00:30:43.040]and sell it
- [00:30:47.960]with for medicinal reason or
- [00:30:50.340]you could use it as a smokable
- [00:30:52.520]him
- [00:30:52.860]very good any other questions
- [00:31:00.260]for ismael very interesting
- [00:31:07.420]um i was wondering if anybody
- [00:31:09.650]on the call went through the
- [00:31:11.910]plant in scott's bluff
- [00:31:13.620]um if if they had what they're
- [00:31:16.640]doing at that point
- [00:31:17.940]scott's bluff i went through it
- [00:31:25.970]um they did have i'm trying to
- [00:31:29.400]remember julia you were there
- [00:31:31.740]too
- [00:31:31.840]they had everything drying and
- [00:31:34.200]they were sorting and pulling
- [00:31:36.570]the seeds off but they
- [00:31:38.020]were primarily growing it for
- [00:31:39.650]seed weren't they julia right
- [00:31:41.280]now they are it seemed like
- [00:31:43.240]yeah
- [00:31:43.460]seed they didn't really i mean
- [00:31:45.320]they didn't detail as much as
- [00:31:46.750]like this as to like the
- [00:31:47.920]like what they were doing with
- [00:31:49.170]it it was mostly like the
- [00:31:50.170]growing process okay this is
- [00:31:52.680]marla and
- [00:31:54.320]they actually have a value-added
- [00:31:56.430]producer grant with us for that
- [00:31:58.490]and the main purpose for their
- [00:32:00.420]project is to coat and certify
- [00:32:03.300]the seed because they are
- [00:32:05.480]trying to get that seed they're
- [00:32:08.340]so small
- [00:32:09.180]and they're adding and they're
- [00:32:10.920]not uniform and so they're
- [00:32:12.390]adding a coating like they do
- [00:32:14.100]to the sugar beet seeds and so
- [00:32:16.360]they can actually
- [00:32:17.900]utilize it in the sugar beet
- [00:32:19.720]planter using that um disc when
- [00:32:22.730]they're planting so that
- [00:32:24.940]it will be an even feed and
- [00:32:26.430]they can plant it more evenly
- [00:32:28.100]oh that's interesting thanks
- [00:32:31.200]thank you guys
- [00:32:31.640]so somebody uh jamie posted the
- [00:32:36.370]article about that scott's
- [00:32:39.300]bluff seed plant if
- [00:32:41.940]folks are interested in all the
- [00:32:44.410]details thank you jamie yeah i
- [00:32:47.000]think it's in
- [00:32:47.880]western nebraska it's much uh
- [00:32:49.880]easier to grow hemp for cbd
- [00:32:52.960]than as i mentioned then in
- [00:32:55.220]here in
- [00:32:55.820]central and north and south
- [00:32:58.490]eastern nebraska i mean there
- [00:33:00.910]is you still going to get some
- [00:33:04.240]seed set on your plants because
- [00:33:06.920]even in scott's bluff when they
- [00:33:09.040]grow it they still have some
- [00:33:11.260]seed set on their plants but
- [00:33:13.090]not as much as if you grow it
- [00:33:14.720]down here in lincoln or mead or
- [00:33:17.860]in central nebraska
- [00:33:19.600]so right now the laws are you
- [00:33:23.350]have to be careful when it's
- [00:33:26.200]growing not to exceed
- [00:33:27.680]the 30 thc content 0.3 0.3
- [00:33:32.390]percent point okay yeah that's
- [00:33:34.810]the definition of industrial
- [00:33:36.840]hemp
- [00:33:37.080]that you could grow uh hemp in
- [00:33:39.880]nebraska as long as the thc
- [00:33:42.400]level does not go above 0.3
- [00:33:46.730]percent
- [00:33:47.840]there are some uh uh
- [00:33:50.860]negotiation now to see if they
- [00:33:53.600]could increase the limit to one
- [00:33:55.740]person
- [00:33:56.140]so that would be maybe instead
- [00:33:58.940]of 0.3 one person because if
- [00:34:02.210]you based on the existing law
- [00:34:06.380]if you
- [00:34:06.500]grow your hemp now and the
- [00:34:08.540]state come and test it within
- [00:34:10.880]30 days before harvest and they
- [00:34:14.100]find that
- [00:34:14.700]the thc level is higher than 0.3
- [00:34:18.240]percent they will ask you to
- [00:34:20.840]destroy the crop within a week
- [00:34:24.720]or two
- [00:34:25.160]weeks so that's why last year i
- [00:34:27.520]think about two or three farms
- [00:34:29.870]in nebraska they had to ask to
- [00:34:33.110]destroy
- [00:34:33.440]their crops even though when
- [00:34:35.440]they buy when they bought the
- [00:34:37.430]seed they're supposed to have
- [00:34:39.500]very low
- [00:34:40.160]concentration of thc but you
- [00:34:42.860]see hemp is very sensitive to
- [00:34:45.600]drought if you have very dry
- [00:34:49.930]season
- [00:34:50.880]especially at flowering time
- [00:34:53.570]the thc level is going to go up
- [00:34:56.070]compared if you have a nice and
- [00:34:58.820]cool environment if you have
- [00:35:01.580]low nitrogen if you have insect
- [00:35:04.170]and disease stress on the plant
- [00:35:07.040]the thc level is going to go up
- [00:35:10.160]so that's why farmers here are
- [00:35:13.320]lobbying the state to see if
- [00:35:15.380]they could increase the limit
- [00:35:17.430]of thc to
- [00:35:18.340]one percent instead of 0.3
- [00:35:20.590]percent that's at least the
- [00:35:23.120]definition of hemp in 2014 and
- [00:35:27.080]2018 farm bills
- [00:35:29.720]ishmael how many agencies or
- [00:35:33.460]organizations govern or oversee
- [00:35:37.900]the growing
- [00:35:40.140]of hemp in in nebraska or
- [00:35:42.140]elsewhere
- [00:35:42.540]well in nebraska we are we at
- [00:35:46.760]least if you are a grow hemp
- [00:35:49.460]you have to abide by
- [00:35:50.600]the state of nebraska
- [00:35:52.160]regulation that's it
- [00:35:53.820]i mean i have a license from dea
- [00:35:57.080]but that's obsolete because the
- [00:36:00.340]state said that
- [00:36:01.600]anything you do you have to
- [00:36:04.250]obey the rules and regulation
- [00:36:07.260]of nebraska
- [00:36:10.120]the state of nebraska has to
- [00:36:11.310]take these rules adopt them to
- [00:36:13.580]our growing condition and they
- [00:36:23.160]could
- [00:36:28.600]issue whatever rules they want
- [00:36:30.600]to so we have to abide by the
- [00:36:32.440]one entity which is the state
- [00:36:34.680]of
- [00:36:34.920]nebraska rules and regulation
- [00:36:37.060]so we have to abide by the one
- [00:36:37.060]entity which is the state of nebraska
- [00:36:37.060]rules and regulation
- [00:36:37.160]rules and regulation
- [00:36:37.160]so we have to abide by the one
- [00:36:37.160]entity which is the state of nebraska
- [00:36:37.180]so we have to abide by the one
- [00:36:37.180]entity which is the state of nebraska
- [00:36:37.180]rules and regulation
- [00:36:37.260]so we have to abide by the one
- [00:36:37.270]entity which is the state of nebraska
- [00:36:37.270]rules and regulation
- [00:36:37.400]so we have to abide by the one
- [00:36:38.230]entity which is the state of nebraska
- [00:36:39.340]rules and regulation
- [00:36:40.120]so we have to abide by the one
- [00:36:41.370]entity which is the state of nebraska
- [00:36:43.060]rules and regulation
- [00:36:44.120]i just didn't know if there
- [00:36:45.650]were federal
- [00:36:46.360]i just didn't know if there
- [00:36:46.360]were federal
- [00:36:46.360]i just didn't know if there
- [00:36:46.720]were federal agencies and state
- [00:36:47.780]agencies
- [00:36:48.520]agencies and state agencies
- [00:36:48.520]agencies and state agencies and
- [00:36:48.900]fda agencies everybody that
- [00:36:50.920]gets
- [00:36:51.080]and fda agencies everybody that
- [00:36:51.080]gets
- [00:36:51.080]and fda agencies everybody that
- [00:36:51.620]gets their hand in there
- [00:36:52.040]their hand in there
- [00:36:52.040]their hand in there well that's
- [00:36:53.530]before the farm builds uh
- [00:36:54.680]well that's before the farm
- [00:36:54.680]builds uh
- [00:36:54.680]well that's before the farm
- [00:36:55.580]builds uh best yes they are the
- [00:36:56.450]dea mostly
- [00:36:58.440]best yes they are the dea
- [00:36:58.440]mostly
- [00:36:58.440]best yes they are the dea
- [00:36:59.230]mostly regulated everything i
- [00:37:00.240]have a dia permit
- [00:37:01.880]regulated everything i have a
- [00:37:01.880]dia permit
- [00:37:01.880]regulated everything i have a
- [00:37:02.840]dia permit and when i talked to
- [00:37:03.760]the
- [00:37:03.960]and when i talked to the
- [00:37:03.960]Department of Ag in Nebraska,
- [00:37:05.360]they said that's obsolete. You
- [00:37:07.670]have to obey our regulation and
- [00:37:11.960]rules. So I mean the DA permit
- [00:37:15.980]allowed me to work with the
- [00:37:19.220]Schedule 1 plans which has up
- [00:37:23.160]to 35% THC,
- [00:37:25.560]but the state said no. So we
- [00:37:28.640]have to obey or follow the
- [00:37:31.840]regulation of the Nebraska.
- [00:37:34.840]Oh, in the margins, Mike, he's
- [00:37:43.600]got another article I see where
- [00:37:45.800]he
- [00:37:46.040]talks about regulations for
- [00:37:47.680]fiber and grain.
- [00:37:48.600]Okay.
- [00:37:53.720]Yeah, one thing it's
- [00:37:55.560]important also in hemp because
- [00:37:57.380]we don't really have
- [00:37:58.600]many pesticide register yet for
- [00:38:02.770]hemp. So if you are growing
- [00:38:05.750]hemp, weed is very big problem.
- [00:38:08.280]So at least here we have to
- [00:38:11.110]weed it by hand or cultivate by
- [00:38:14.480]tractor. So you need to be
- [00:38:17.480]aware of that. So you cannot
- [00:38:19.980]use herbicide and hemp so far.
- [00:38:22.760]And you want to make sure that
- [00:38:25.560]you are using the right herbicide
- [00:38:26.570]and make sure that you are
- [00:38:27.560]using the right herbicide to
- [00:38:27.920]avoid drifting from your
- [00:38:30.600]neighbors because hemp is very
- [00:38:33.150]sensitive to herbicide drift.
- [00:38:36.840]So you want to make sure that
- [00:38:39.450]your neighbor is not a big farm
- [00:38:42.720]corn or soybean grower
- [00:38:44.520]who spray every two weeks. So
- [00:38:46.130]you want to make sure.
- [00:38:47.800]And especially if you are
- [00:38:50.770]growing organic hemp, you
- [00:38:52.710]cannot use any of the
- [00:38:55.560]pesticides that are registered
- [00:39:00.550]in any crops.
- [00:39:01.560]Have any of you on the call? I
- [00:39:06.010]mean, I guess I'm going back to
- [00:39:07.850]the business economics,
- [00:39:09.160]the application side of things
- [00:39:10.640]here for if our local
- [00:39:12.140]entrepreneurs can make money or
- [00:39:14.810]put to use.
- [00:39:15.960]Has anybody heard of building
- [00:39:17.380]with or using hemp products
- [00:39:19.420]other than you know food type
- [00:39:21.720]stuff like
- [00:39:22.200]the hempcrete or is there any
- [00:39:24.390]production?
- [00:39:26.520]Of hemp related products in
- [00:39:27.820]Nebraska or selling it?
- [00:39:30.360]Well, I mean, I'm in Nebraska
- [00:39:33.340]because we are not really
- [00:39:36.280]growing hemp yet. I would say
- [00:39:38.650]that.
- [00:39:39.560]I mean, last year you have nine
- [00:39:41.830]farms. Most of them are growing
- [00:39:43.840]hemp in the greenhouse for CBD.
- [00:39:46.120]The year before, maybe we have
- [00:39:48.460]two or three. And because of
- [00:39:50.710]the pandemic last year, there
- [00:39:53.050]is no,
- [00:39:54.360]everybody was nervous about
- [00:39:55.820]growing hemp, even because the
- [00:39:58.580]market was not stable.
- [00:40:01.560]So if you don't have farmers to
- [00:40:06.010]grow it, you're not going to
- [00:40:07.850]have a market. If you are not
- [00:40:09.240]going
- [00:40:09.480]to have the processing, you are
- [00:40:11.540]not going to have farmers to
- [00:40:13.290]grow it. So that's our problem
- [00:40:16.920]here,
- [00:40:17.160]especially in Nebraska. In
- [00:40:18.840]other states like Kentucky,
- [00:40:20.530]they grow thousands of
- [00:40:21.810]thousands of
- [00:40:22.680]acres. Colorado, the same.
- [00:40:24.820]Montana, Oregon, Nebraska,
- [00:40:27.290]maybe we grow a hundred acres.
- [00:40:30.680]So it's not really a big state
- [00:40:34.840]for hemp yet. And still we have
- [00:40:39.030]investors who come in and
- [00:40:41.320]put a processing plant for
- [00:40:43.800]fiber or for grain. If I'm a
- [00:40:46.620]farmer, I'd be hesitant to
- [00:40:49.570]plant
- [00:40:50.840]a large-scale hemp farm because
- [00:40:55.280]I want to make sure that
- [00:40:56.730]somebody at the end of the day
- [00:40:58.360]is going
- [00:40:58.600]to buy it from me. Right, right.
- [00:41:00.200]Okay. Is there any other
- [00:41:07.180]questions for Ismael?
- [00:41:13.880]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:16.590]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:18.760]You're welcome.
- [00:41:19.400]Thank you very much, Ismael.
- [00:41:19.520]You're welcome.
- [00:41:19.640]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:19.640]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:19.720]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:19.720]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:19.800]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:19.800]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:19.880]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:19.880]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:19.960]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:20.040]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:20.200]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:20.200]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:20.200]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:20.200]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:20.280]Thank you very much, Ismael. I
- [00:41:20.280]really appreciate this.
- [00:41:20.280]It's very, very interesting.
- [00:41:21.640]Thank you.
- [00:41:22.440]You're welcome.
- [00:41:23.000]And we have your articles here
- [00:41:25.070]in the chat. So it looks like
- [00:41:27.650]in these articles,
- [00:41:28.600]there's ways to get ahold of
- [00:41:29.660]you if we have more questions.
- [00:41:31.000]Yes, yes. You have my email.
- [00:41:32.680]You could send me an email or
- [00:41:36.350]if you have my phone,
- [00:41:37.240]you could leave me a message. I'd
- [00:41:38.820]be happy to, if you have any
- [00:41:41.300]questions,
- [00:41:41.960]especially now it's a planting
- [00:41:44.120]season, where to get the seed,
- [00:41:46.440]how, I mentioned how
- [00:41:49.720]much nitrogen, phosphorus you
- [00:41:52.310]need, planting density and
- [00:41:54.610]spacing.
- [00:41:55.320]It depends what berber you are
- [00:41:58.820]growing it.
- [00:42:00.120]Soil, you know that it's hemp-like,
- [00:42:04.560]well-drained soil. It doesn't
- [00:42:08.020]like heavy clay soil.
- [00:42:09.400]So that's, these are mostly the
- [00:42:12.920]requirement. If you grow, if
- [00:42:15.730]you can grow corn and soybean,
- [00:42:17.800]you could grow hemp.
- [00:42:19.720]Very good. Well, thank you once
- [00:42:24.600]again, Ismael. And if we have
- [00:42:26.440]questions,
- [00:42:26.760]we know where to find you. I
- [00:42:27.680]thought we've all found this
- [00:42:28.720]very interesting.
- [00:42:29.560]Thank you.
- [00:42:30.200]Hopefully we get some more
- [00:42:31.500]growers and even better than
- [00:42:33.640]the growers is some buyers.
- [00:42:35.000]Yeah, that's what we need. Yeah.
- [00:42:37.080]This is an economic development
- [00:42:38.710]group, so we got to have
- [00:42:40.520]cash flow happening. Otherwise
- [00:42:41.990]it's no good.
- [00:42:42.680]Yeah. I mean, you have to have
- [00:42:44.920]processing. You have to have
- [00:42:47.360]farming.
- [00:42:47.720]Yeah.
- [00:42:48.120]Yeah.
- [00:42:48.520]Yeah.
- [00:42:48.920]Yeah.
- [00:42:49.160]Yeah.
- [00:42:49.720]These go together.
- [00:42:50.680]Very good. For the rest of you,
- [00:42:54.840]I think a couple more weeks is
- [00:42:56.130]the next Rural Voluntary View.
- [00:42:57.510]And
- [00:42:57.640]I hope to see you then. And
- [00:42:59.110]happy Cinco de Mayo to everyone.
- [00:43:01.080]Goodbye, everybody. Happy Cinco
- [00:43:07.000]de Mayo.
- [00:43:08.760]Bye, group. Thank you, Ismael.
- [00:43:11.800]Thanks, John.
