- [00:00:04.530]Yeah, hi, my name is Emmeline Watson.
- [00:00:06.360]I'm one of the professors at the Durham School.
- [00:00:09.360]Today we are building 10 sheds.
- [00:00:11.910]Actually, nine sheds and a dog house.
- [00:00:14.970]Our students in vertical construction
- [00:00:16.740]learn everything related to construction,
- [00:00:19.050]to materials from the foundation,
- [00:00:20.520]all the way to the roofing.
- [00:00:22.380]And then we are finishing the project
- [00:00:24.240]or the semester with this project
- [00:00:26.040]where they're building sheds and a dog house.
- [00:00:29.190]They can apply everything they learned in the semester,
- [00:00:31.290]they get some hand-on experience.
- [00:00:33.600]They were training to use all the types of tools
- [00:00:38.040]and power tools that they needed.
- [00:00:39.859](hammer pounding)
- [00:00:42.330]I'm Hallie Hamilton.
- [00:00:43.470]I'm a sophomore construction management major.
- [00:00:47.250]I'm Ashley Gerard, I'm also a sophomore
- [00:00:49.350]construction management major.
- [00:00:51.000]I think this project in general
- [00:00:53.250]is kind of both of our first time getting our hands dirty.
- [00:00:57.000]This summer, we both have internships,
- [00:00:58.560]so this is kind of our first time
- [00:01:00.150]getting to be on a job site technically
- [00:01:02.670]and learning kind of the ropes
- [00:01:04.350]of what every day is going to look like for us.
- [00:01:06.660]And it's also nice because this is kind of
- [00:01:08.790]more like actual labor work
- [00:01:10.530]that we wouldn't really get more from internships
- [00:01:14.190]because we're doing like project manager-type stuff.
- [00:01:15.990]So we actually get to learn
- [00:01:17.730]what we're watching over the summer,
- [00:01:19.260]which is really cool, that we get to do
- [00:01:20.849]lots of hands-on stuff.
- [00:01:22.680]We have partners not only help with the students,
- [00:01:25.650]with foreman and carpenters,
- [00:01:27.570]but also people that came to train them for safety,
- [00:01:33.180]came to train them how to put the windows
- [00:01:35.520]and the electrical part.
- [00:01:36.570]And they got support all around
- [00:01:39.210]because we are very, very blessed to have
- [00:01:41.100]an amazing community from, you know,
- [00:01:42.930]contractors around here.
- [00:01:45.120]Hi, I'm Jada Jeffries. I'm a junior here at the college.
- [00:01:48.150]I've getting my bachelor's in construction management.
- [00:01:51.210]We did have to collaborate as a team to decide
- [00:01:54.150]the different dimensions as well as the materials used.
- [00:01:56.790]And we had to make these schedules on time
- [00:02:00.570]and make sure that we get the project done,
- [00:02:02.850]which is this Friday.
- [00:02:04.050]It was definitely an experience
- [00:02:05.760]to know how much work goes into making them
- [00:02:08.460]and making sure they're correct.
- [00:02:09.450]Because if you make them and something is wrong out here,
- [00:02:11.940]that could cause a big delay and money issue.
- [00:02:14.760]So, I definitely appreciate how well plans are made
- [00:02:17.820]now that I've had to make my own.
- [00:02:20.070]And I also really enjoy the fact
- [00:02:21.720]that we get to be out here and we get to be learning this.
- [00:02:25.290]We can't learn all this being in a classroom
- [00:02:28.290]and looking at our books.
- [00:02:29.790]My name is Cameron Lenhardt,
- [00:02:30.930]I'm a sophomore construction management major.
- [00:02:33.930]We just finished some framing,
- [00:02:35.370]now we're putting up some OSB up on the walls,
- [00:02:38.730]putting some trusses up on the roof,
- [00:02:40.380]and things like that.
- [00:02:41.490]So, what we got going on today, it's a fun little project,
- [00:02:44.940]you know, learning a lot from vertical construction,
- [00:02:47.310]just from like foundation up.
- [00:02:49.530]So being able to come out here today
- [00:02:50.790]and putting it to life, you know,
- [00:02:54.000]build the shed is pretty cool.
- [00:02:55.792](hammer pounding)
- [00:02:58.770]This is just teaching me how to be in a team,
- [00:03:01.230]have good teamwork, as well as, you know,
- [00:03:03.780]being able to coordinate and keep a schedule,
- [00:03:05.580]which is important for the construction management career.
- [00:03:08.730]And it definitely helps and makes one feel better
- [00:03:11.640]when they're giving back to the community.
- [00:03:13.380]So as part of the complete engineer,
- [00:03:14.880]we want to make sure that students leave here
- [00:03:16.830]being all-around engineer, all-around human beings.
- [00:03:20.220]So we actually, we are selling all the sheds,
- [00:03:24.300]and all the money is going to go
- [00:03:25.981]to raise to go to Hope Village.
- [00:03:30.234](hammer pounding)
- [00:03:41.817](power tool whirring)
- [00:03:44.340]I think it's really exciting
- [00:03:45.270]that we get to be a part of it
- [00:03:46.380]because not only is it this whole thing helping us learn,
- [00:03:49.290]but it also goes out and helps the community.
- [00:03:52.230]And I think it's nice to know
- [00:03:53.400]that somebody is getting a home out of this,
- [00:03:55.380]somebody is gaining something from this,
- [00:03:57.390]and that I got to be a part of it.
- [00:03:58.800]And I think that's really cool,
- [00:04:00.240]that I get to give back to the Lincoln community.
