- [00:00:00.000]The Scotts Bluff County Courthouse
- [00:00:01.640]Garden in Gering has been
- [00:00:02.920]under construction this spring
- [00:00:04.460]and on May 16th the Nebraska
- [00:00:06.480]Extension Master Gardeners and
- [00:00:08.720]4-H Youth were out updating the
- [00:00:10.600]flowers and plants for the pollinator
- [00:00:12.660]habitat. Laurie Zitterkopf,
- [00:00:14.330]Nebraska Extension Master Gardener
- [00:00:16.320]and coordinator for the event
- [00:00:17.920]explains the need for the
- [00:00:19.270]update. It was in a big need of
- [00:00:23.020]a change over.
- [00:00:24.340]It had vine weed and thistles
- [00:00:27.550]had taken over and so this last
- [00:00:30.080]year growing season the
- [00:00:32.860]employees at the courthouse
- [00:00:34.840]with the county sprayed it to
- [00:00:36.810]kill off the vine weed, kill
- [00:00:38.920]off
- [00:00:39.140]the thistles and of course that
- [00:00:40.250]took care of everything else
- [00:00:41.280]that might have been in here.
- [00:00:42.540]The pollinator garden will have
- [00:00:44.270]nine specific local plants for
- [00:00:45.920]nine local butterflies. We
- [00:00:48.900]did research on the different
- [00:00:50.810]plants and we used the Nebraska
- [00:00:52.790]statewide arboretum
- [00:00:54.220]so we're going to be using the
- [00:00:54.220]Nebraska statewide arboretum.
- [00:00:54.340]Their planting guide of doing a
- [00:00:56.970]tiered layer, less weeds more
- [00:01:00.630]wow and so we have four layers
- [00:01:03.980]of
- [00:01:04.160]plants. We have our anchor
- [00:01:06.000]plants which are our focal
- [00:01:07.700]plants. We have our seasonal
- [00:01:09.700]superstars.
- [00:01:10.800]We have our space holders or
- [00:01:12.910]place holders which are like
- [00:01:15.140]your blue flax and things like
- [00:01:17.450]that that
- [00:01:18.140]and black-eyed susans which
- [00:01:20.230]will move around and fill in
- [00:01:22.230]spaces and then dissipate
- [00:01:24.220]as the other native plants take
- [00:01:26.380]hold because some of our native
- [00:01:28.620]plants will take three plus
- [00:01:30.470]years to
- [00:01:31.040]really shine so we need to have
- [00:01:33.350]other things in place while
- [00:01:35.500]they grow up. Zitterkopf said
- [00:01:38.320]the
- [00:01:38.460]pollinator garden will have a
- [00:01:39.960]different aesthetic next fall
- [00:01:41.540]than other flower beds. The main
- [00:01:43.630]goal for
- [00:01:44.460]taking care of it is just to be
- [00:01:46.860]able to come in, in the
- [00:01:48.850]spring as late as we can just
- [00:01:51.160]break
- [00:01:51.780]off stems and leave them in
- [00:01:53.130]place.
- [00:01:54.100]We don't want to remove the
- [00:01:55.740]stems because there might be
- [00:01:57.530]insects living in them, and
- [00:02:00.420]we don't want to cut those
- [00:02:02.120]stems off too far down because
- [00:02:04.150]actually the insects use that
- [00:02:06.280]second year after you've deadheaded
- [00:02:08.760]it, then the next season they
- [00:02:10.760]use that for their homes
- [00:02:12.380]to overwinter in.
- [00:02:14.980]The maintenance on this will be
- [00:02:17.130]focused on insects, taking care
- [00:02:19.460]of the insects that are
- [00:02:21.140]in our area.
- [00:02:22.560]We will have, one of the kids
- [00:02:24.350]for their 4-H project, making a
- [00:02:26.350]puddling area so that
- [00:02:27.800]we will have places for them to
- [00:02:30.170]get their water and mud and
- [00:02:32.250]stuff like that.
- [00:02:33.860]The Pollinator Garden will be a
- [00:02:35.420]stop on the Nebraska Statewide
- [00:02:36.990]Arboretum's Wildflower
- [00:02:38.360]Week schedule on Friday, June 6th.
- [00:02:41.600]The gardeners will finish
- [00:02:42.850]planting on June 6th, and there
- [00:02:44.480]will be a ribbon cutting at
- [00:02:45.800]10 a.m.
- [00:02:46.800]The public is invited.
- [00:02:48.600]Funds from a Watchable Wildlife
- [00:02:50.680]Grant.
- [00:02:51.340]The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum.
- [00:02:52.540]And Keno funds have been used
- [00:02:54.230]for the Pollinator Garden.
- [00:02:56.940]With the UNL Panhandle Research
- [00:02:58.630]Extension and Education Center,
