- [00:00:00.000]Horse racing is on the rise in the Husker State.
- [00:00:02.640]A program from Nebraska Extension is now helping boost the future of that industry,
- [00:00:07.340]bringing together youth, owners, and breeders to explore all aspects of the equine sector.
- [00:00:13.480]Dr. Kathy Anderson with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln joined us now for a closer look.
- [00:00:18.800]Good to have you with us, Kathy.
- [00:00:20.520]Let's start with the big picture here.
- [00:00:22.840]What is Race Nebraska, and why was it created?
- [00:00:26.920]Well, this is really what we consider an extension program, but it's an outreach educational kind of program.
- [00:00:31.980]And when the bill was passed in 2020 to expand gambling, we realized that we needed to do something to help the racing industry.
- [00:00:39.840]And so it really is bridging the gap between all segments of youth, adults, whomever,
- [00:00:45.680]to try to invigorate more folks to be involved in the horse racing industry here in our state.
- [00:00:49.640]And I understand that racing has really taken off in Nebraska recently, hasn't it?
- [00:00:55.020]Yes, it certainly has.
- [00:00:56.840]And a lot of that is due to the way that the statute, the state statute, has been put together.
- [00:01:02.600]And so from up until 20, so we currently have five thoroughbred racetracks in the state.
- [00:01:07.960]We also have one quarter horse track that is coming in the western part of the state.
- [00:01:12.200]That one's under construction.
- [00:01:13.340]So for those tracks that are currently there, the rules are up until this year,
- [00:01:18.560]they had to have at least one race meet a day or one day of racing a year.
- [00:01:23.140]Then for the next five years, they actually have to have,
- [00:01:26.360]five live days of racing or 15 races.
- [00:01:30.300]Then, excuse me, let me fix that.
- [00:01:32.580]15 live races, 15 days of races, and 50 live races.
- [00:01:36.870]Then coming after that about 31 then it expands to needing 50 race days and 120 live races.
- [00:01:44.870]Now the track that's coming on out in western Nebraska that clock will start ticking once that track is up and functioning.
- [00:01:50.870]The other segment of this that's very important to understand is that of those race days they are required to have one race day per day,
- [00:01:58.870]one race per day that is designated for Nebraska bred horses.
- [00:02:02.870]So what does it take to qualify as Nebraska bred?
- [00:02:06.870]Yeah, that's part of our issue and why we're really pushing to help expand.
- [00:02:10.870]Because for a horse to be Nebraska bred eligible, the mare has to foal out, so deliver that foal here in the state.
- [00:02:16.870]And she needs to be in the state at least 90 days before she foals.
- [00:02:20.870]Or if she was bought at a nationally recognized sale, then that is a little bit different.
- [00:02:25.870]There are various incentives, and there are higher incentives if she's actually bred to a stallion that's standing in the state.
- [00:02:30.870]They can also breed to stallion.
- [00:02:32.870]And then there's horses that are outside the state.
- [00:02:34.870]So that's part of our push is to expand the number of horses that we do have in the state for that Nebraska bred requirement.
- [00:02:41.870]Yeah, that does sound like a huge undertaking.
- [00:02:43.870]So what does Race Nebraska do to support all that?
- [00:02:47.870]Well, really what we're doing is we're having seminars teaching about, you know, raising horses, all different kinds of things,
- [00:02:54.870]both in the spring and the fall and a variety of other different educational kind of outreach things to help teach people about the racing industry.
- [00:03:01.870]All right.
- [00:03:02.870]We look forward to all of that.
- [00:03:03.870]Keep us posted.
- [00:03:04.870]That's Dr. Kathy Anderson with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:03:07.870]Appreciate your time today.
- [00:03:09.870]Thank you.
