- [00:15:28.000]Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to the May 2025 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Graduate Commencement.
- [00:15:38.000]I'm Rodney Bennett,
- [00:15:40.000]Chancellor of Nebraska's
- [00:15:42.000]Land-Grant Flagship Big Ten University.
- [00:15:46.000]Thank you for joining us today in Pinnacle Bank Arena
- [00:15:50.000]and live on our website around the world
- [00:15:54.000]for this special moment in the lives of our graduates and
- [00:15:58.000]in the life of our university. Please
- [00:16:02.000]rise, if you're able to do so, as Sylvia
- [00:16:06.000]O'Neill, a Master of Music candidate in the
- [00:16:10.000]Glenn Korff School of Music, leads us in singing
- [00:16:14.000]our national anthem. As Sylvia
- [00:16:18.000]makes her way to the podium, I'd like to recognize that today
- [00:16:22.000]is Sylvia's birthday. So traditionally, we would
- [00:16:26.000]sing to Sylvia, but instead she is going to lead us in
- [00:16:30.000]singing our national anthem. Sylvia, happy birthday.

- [00:24:59.000]Each member is listed in your program.
- [00:25:02.000]They provide leadership in all facets
- [00:25:05.000]of University operations,
- [00:25:07.000]and even though it may be invisible to you,
- [00:25:11.000]each of you today has been affected
- [00:25:14.000]by the hard work and dedication
- [00:25:16.000]of these outstanding servant leaders.
- [00:25:19.000]I would ask them to please stand

- [00:25:24.000]It is now my privilege to welcome to the podium

- [00:25:38.000]President Gold has held several roles

- [00:25:51.000]Chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha,
- [00:25:55.000]and Executive Vice President and Provost.
- [00:25:59.000]Most recently, President Gold was selected
- [00:26:02.000]by the Board of Regents to serve as the President
- [00:26:05.000]of the University of Nebraska system,
- [00:26:08.000]a role that he began last summer.
- [00:26:12.000]Please help me welcome to the podium
- [00:26:14.000]our System President, President Jeffrey Gold.
- [00:26:18.000]Well, thank you, Chancellor Bennett.
- [00:26:29.000]It's so great to welcome you here today
- [00:26:31.000]on behalf of the entire University of Nebraska system.
- [00:26:35.000]To our faculty and staff who made this day possible,
- [00:26:40.000]our deepest thanks and our congratulations to you,
- [00:26:43.000]to the leadership of the Lincoln campus,
- [00:26:46.000]just an amazing group of human beings,
- [00:26:49.000]to the family, friends, and loved ones of our graduates,
- [00:26:53.000]thank you for being here, and most importantly,
- [00:26:56.000]thank you for making this journey possible.
- [00:26:59.000]But my few words today, originally I thought I had 35 minutes,
- [00:27:03.000]and then they told me it was 325 minutes,
- [00:27:07.000]so I will keep it very brief.
- [00:27:10.000]But my words today are to you,
- [00:27:12.000]our graduates.
- [00:27:14.000]First and foremost, congratulations.
- [00:27:17.000]Achieving any academic degree,
- [00:27:19.000]but particularly achieving a graduate degree
- [00:27:22.000]at the master's, doctoral, or professional levels
- [00:27:26.000]is an amazing achievement.
- [00:27:28.000]It's a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of effort,
- [00:27:31.000]a lot of joy, a lot of frustration,
- [00:27:34.000]and all of the above mixed up in ways
- [00:27:36.000]that are very hard to predict.
- [00:27:38.000]So you have made it.
- [00:27:40.000]And I will tell you
- [00:27:41.000]that your education,
- [00:27:44.000]the experiences that you have had
- [00:27:46.000]both in the classroom
- [00:27:47.000]and in the research laboratories,
- [00:27:49.000]in the communities in extension,
- [00:27:51.000]across rural and urban parts of our state
- [00:27:53.000]and around the world,
- [00:27:55.000]are invaluable.
- [00:27:57.000]And they have never been more important.
- [00:27:59.000]Of all of the things that you will ever
- [00:28:01.000]acquire in your life,
- [00:28:03.000]be it possessions, relationships,
- [00:28:05.000]and so much more,
- [00:28:07.000]your education is something
- [00:28:09.000]that no one can ever take away from you.
- [00:28:10.000]Indeed,
- [00:28:12.000]if you go back to the very fundamental words
- [00:28:14.000]of Thomas Jefferson,
- [00:28:16.000]our true democracy
- [00:28:18.000]depends upon
- [00:28:20.000]an educated electorate.
- [00:28:22.000]And for each of you
- [00:28:24.000]who will be granted a degree
- [00:28:26.000]with the rights and privileges
- [00:28:28.000]and the responsibilities
- [00:28:30.000]in just a few minutes,
- [00:28:32.000]your degree,
- [00:28:34.000]your educational experiences
- [00:28:36.000]have been never more important
- [00:28:38.000]than they are today.
- [00:28:39.000]The second point
- [00:28:41.000]that I would like to briefly make
- [00:28:43.000]is that time is something
- [00:28:45.000]that we can never re-achieve.
- [00:28:47.000]Once the pages
- [00:28:49.000]fall off the calendar,
- [00:28:51.000]it is almost impossible,
- [00:28:53.000]at least to the best of my knowledge,
- [00:28:55.000]spending 25 years as a practicing physician
- [00:28:57.000]to ever put them back.
- [00:28:59.000]I guess someday it may be possible.
- [00:29:01.000]You can retrieve
- [00:29:03.000]a lot of different things in your life,
- [00:29:05.000]you can change your careers,
- [00:29:07.000]you can change where you live,
- [00:29:08.000]what you do,
- [00:29:09.000]and so much more.
- [00:29:11.000]You can go on for additional education
- [00:29:13.000]and have any limited number of experiences.
- [00:29:16.000]But time is incredibly precious.
- [00:29:19.000]And there is no time like the present
- [00:29:22.000]to use your knowledge and your experience
- [00:29:25.000]for the betterment of the communities
- [00:29:27.000]that you will serve
- [00:29:29.000]and that we serve together here in Nebraska.
- [00:29:31.000]We need you.
- [00:29:33.000]We need you to stay here, work here,
- [00:29:35.000]have a family here,
- [00:29:37.000]set down your roots here,
- [00:29:39.000]and be part of the future
- [00:29:41.000]of this wonderful state.
- [00:29:43.000]We need your voices.
- [00:29:45.000]We need your intellect.
- [00:29:47.000]We need you to be part of our future.
- [00:29:49.000]And so with that,
- [00:29:51.000]I once more choose to congratulate you,
- [00:29:53.000]wish you the very best
- [00:29:55.000]in your journey,
- [00:29:57.000]and look forward to seeing you
- [00:29:59.000]at future events.
- [00:30:01.000]Thank you so much, and Godspeed in your journey.
- [00:30:03.000]I'd like to just thank President Gold for those remarks,
- [00:30:12.000]and also for the hard work that he's doing
- [00:30:15.000]in advancing public higher education
- [00:30:17.000]across the state of Nebraska and beyond.
- [00:30:19.000]We really appreciate everything that you do
- [00:30:22.000]for our universities, for our state,
- [00:30:25.000]and for our students.
- [00:30:27.000]It is now my pleasure to welcome to the podium
- [00:30:29.000]Regent Tim Clare,
- [00:30:31.000]who will be followed by
- [00:30:33.000]General Regent and immediate
- [00:30:35.000]past president of the Association
- [00:30:37.000]of Students for the
- [00:30:39.000]University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:30:41.000]Elizabeth Herbin. Regent Clare.
- [00:30:43.000]Well, I too was told three to five minutes,
- [00:30:52.000]but they didn't correct it and say three to five.
- [00:30:55.000]So I got--no, I'm just kidding.
- [00:30:57.000]It won't be 35 minutes.
- [00:30:59.000]Good afternoon, and on behalf of
- [00:31:01.000]Regent Herbin and all of our
- [00:31:03.000]colleagues on the Board of Regents,
- [00:31:05.000]it's my privilege to also congratulate the graduates.
- [00:31:08.000]I'm proud to be here and celebrate
- [00:31:10.000]the Husker Class of 2025.
- [00:31:13.000]Thank you to President Gold and Chancellor Bennett
- [00:31:16.000]for the opportunity to be with the graduates
- [00:31:18.000]and their families and friends.
- [00:31:20.000]Commencement is truly a team effort.
- [00:31:24.000]So I want to congratulate everyone here in the arena
- [00:31:28.000]who played a part in helping our students
- [00:31:30.000]reach this point, this moment,
- [00:31:32.000]this moment belongs to all of you.
- [00:31:35.000]Days like today are the best days
- [00:31:38.000]to serve on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents
- [00:31:42.000]because it's commencement and it reminds us
- [00:31:45.000]of our fundamental mission
- [00:31:47.000]while we're here at the university and that is
- [00:31:49.000]we have the greatest privilege in the world
- [00:31:52.000]helping prepare the next generations of leaders
- [00:31:55.000]for Nebraska and truly transform their lives.
- [00:32:01.000]Looking out at the graduates today
- [00:32:03.000]and seeing the pride and joy on their faces
- [00:32:06.000]along with the pride and joy on the faces
- [00:32:09.000]of their families, friends, the faculty,
- [00:32:13.000]it is clear to me that we're delivering on our mission.
- [00:32:17.000]Today, you've achieved a major milestone in your life.
- [00:32:22.000]Appreciate it.
- [00:32:24.000]Appreciate the work that you've put in,
- [00:32:27.000]the time, effort, energies that you've put in,
- [00:32:30.000]to achieve this major milestone.
- [00:32:35.000]Appreciate also the loved ones that have helped you,
- [00:32:39.000]because without their support and their guidance
- [00:32:42.000]and their just being there to lift you up
- [00:32:45.000]and help you on the lows of the low,
- [00:32:49.000]and also be there to celebrate with you on those high moments,
- [00:32:54.000]without that, I'm not sure that you'd be here as well.
- [00:32:59.000]So appreciate those loved ones.
- [00:33:01.000]Appreciate the great faculty that provided guidance
- [00:33:05.000]and mentorship and support to you to get to this day as well,
- [00:33:10.000]because they're also an integral part in you being here today.
- [00:33:16.000]So appreciate what this day means.
- [00:33:19.000]Enjoy it and appreciate it.
- [00:33:21.000]Our world needs thoughtful, principled leaders
- [00:33:24.000]who understand that they serve a purpose bigger than themselves.
- [00:33:28.000]Leaders like all of you.
- [00:33:31.000]So this is a great day for us in that we get to sit back and say,
- [00:33:36.000]"Gosh, we had a part in making this person who they are
- [00:33:40.000]and what they're bringing to the world."
- [00:33:43.000]And so we're excited to watch you in your next chapter
- [00:33:47.000]and watch you and see how you flourish.
- [00:33:50.000]We all have a responsibility to serve the greater good,
- [00:33:54.000]and we can all do our part no matter what happens.
- [00:33:57.000]No matter what path we choose in terms of our career,
- [00:34:01.000]our family, or community involvement.
- [00:34:04.000]Remember that we rise by lifting up others.
- [00:34:07.000]That investment of helping lift up somebody else,
- [00:34:10.000]that investment is free.
- [00:34:12.000]It's easy to do.
- [00:34:13.000]It doesn't cost you a dime, but the dividends are endless.
- [00:34:17.000]Whether you're entering the workforce,
- [00:34:20.000]whether you choose to start your own business,
- [00:34:23.000]serve in the military, pursue elected office,
- [00:34:26.000]or volunteer in your community,
- [00:34:28.000]we all have a role in making Nebraska
- [00:34:31.000]a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
- [00:34:34.000]Your University of Nebraska education has prepared you well
- [00:34:38.000]for this life of leadership and service.
- [00:34:41.000]In fact, I believe there's never been a better time
- [00:34:44.000]to take a Nebraska degree out into the world.
- [00:34:50.000]You've learned valuable lessons here at UNL,
- [00:34:52.000]both inside and outside the classroom.
- [00:34:55.000]You've learned how to be resilient, compassionate, and curious.
- [00:34:59.000]Our faculty and staff have given you the tools for growth and success.
- [00:35:04.000]These lessons will carry you far.
- [00:35:07.000]And while you're earning your degree today,
- [00:35:10.000]my hope is that it's only one chapter in a lifetime of learning for all of you.
- [00:35:15.000]When you are a student of life, always learning,
- [00:35:19.000]you will always continue to try to learn more.
- [00:35:24.000]You will not only be able to meet the challenge that comes your way,
- [00:35:29.000]but to also lead, impact the people around you,
- [00:35:33.000]and build an even greater future for all of us.
- [00:35:36.000]So congratulations on behalf of the Board of Regents.
- [00:35:40.000]We know you will do big things,
- [00:35:42.000]and we'll be cheering you on every step of the way.
- [00:35:45.000]So dream big, change the world, and go Big Red.
- [00:35:48.000]On behalf of the students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:36:04.000]congratulations, Husker graduates.
- [00:36:06.000]My name is Elizabeth Herben,
- [00:36:08.000]the 2024-2025 Student Body President and Student Regent.
- [00:36:12.000]Today is a monumental achievement in each of your lives
- [00:36:16.000]that you should be proud of yourselves.
- [00:36:18.000]The hard work that each of you have poured into your academics
- [00:36:21.000]is celebrated today by those who have supported you
- [00:36:25.000]and your fellow Huskers.
- [00:36:27.000]As your new journey begins,
- [00:36:29.000]know you carry with you the support and pride of the Husker family.
- [00:36:33.000]The friendships, memories, and lessons you've gathered
- [00:36:37.000]during your time at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:36:40.000]will be foundational for years to come.
- [00:36:42.000]Congratulations again, graduates, and go Big Red.
- [00:36:46.000]Thank you, Regents, for those wonderful remarks.
- [00:36:55.000]I want to say to the students, you guys have been sitting there
- [00:36:58.000]so attentive and quiet and orderly.
- [00:37:02.000]I so appreciate that.
- [00:37:03.000]We are about a minute and a half away from conferring the degrees.
- [00:37:07.000]So let us get through two more paragraphs,
- [00:37:09.000]and then it's on to you coming across the stage.
- [00:37:12.000]I know you're ready for that to occur.
- [00:37:15.000]Thank you.
- [00:37:16.000]The university faculty and staff, as you know,
- [00:37:19.000]form the heart of the university.
- [00:37:22.000]And we are certainly grateful to them for their time and efforts
- [00:37:27.000]in helping our students reach their educational goals.
- [00:37:31.000]Throughout the arena are university marshals in red robes
- [00:37:35.000]assisting with today's ceremony.
- [00:37:39.000]They are faculty and staff volunteers led by our head marshal,
- [00:37:45.000]Dr. Robert Hayden.
- [00:37:46.000]We are so grateful to members of our faculty and staff
- [00:37:50.000]who are attending commencement.
- [00:37:52.000]I'd like to ask all members of our faculty and staff who are here,
- [00:37:56.000]both on the floor, in the audience, on the stage,
- [00:38:00.000]if you might stand so that we could recognize you
- [00:38:03.000]and thank you for your service to the institution.
- [00:38:06.000]Thank you all.
- [00:38:15.000]Thank you. You may be seated.
- [00:38:19.000]And then the final paragraph or so before the conferral of degrees.
- [00:38:25.000]Graduates seldom does a person accomplish something as important
- [00:38:31.000]and as challenging as earning an academic degree without the support of many people.
- [00:38:38.000]This is our opportunity to thank all the people in your life who share in the limelight
- [00:38:44.000]of this occasion.
- [00:38:47.000]I'd like to ask you if you would stand and turn to your family
- [00:38:51.000]and give them a big round of applause for the amazing support that they've given you
- [00:38:55.000]along this very long and tedious graduate school journey.
- [00:39:01.000]Would you do that please? Thank you.
- [00:39:03.000]Thank you all.
- [00:39:13.000]Dr. Jennifer Wood, our Associate Dean of Graduate Studies,
- [00:39:19.000]will now present the candidates for doctoral degrees.
- [00:39:23.000]The names of the candidates will be read by Mike Zelny.
- [00:39:27.000]Mike serves as our Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance
- [00:39:31.000]as each student crosses the stage.
- [00:39:34.000]Dr. Wood.
- [00:39:35.000]Chancellor Bennett,
- [00:39:42.000]I have the honor to present to you students from the Graduate College

- [00:39:55.000]or Doctor of Audiology.
- [00:39:58.000]These students will be accompanied to the stage by their faculty mentors
- [00:40:02.000]and will receive their doctoral hood and diploma.
- [00:40:06.000]Doctoral degrees are listed in the program beginning on page 14.
- [00:40:11.000]Will these doctoral candidates please stand?
- [00:40:14.000]By the authority of the State of Nebraska,

- [00:40:44.000]according to the particular requirements completed,
- [00:40:47.000]with all the associated privileges, responsibilities, and honors thereunto appertaining.
- [00:40:54.000]Please be seated.
- [00:40:56.000]So, now the fun begins.
- [00:41:06.000]You will be directed by the marshals to cross the stage to receive your diploma.
- [00:41:10.000]Thank you, Dr. Newell.
- [00:41:13.000]Marshals, just before we invite our students to come across the stage,
- [00:41:17.000]I want to just do one quick thing.
- [00:41:19.000]I'd like to ask all those doctoral students to stand again, please, if you don't mind.
- [00:41:25.000]Because I, too, want to offer a conferral of the degrees for each of you today.
- [00:41:31.000]So, by the authority of the state of Nebraska,

- [00:46:45.000]Hey, Mike Zelnick, just hang on just one second.
- [00:46:48.000]Can I see the head marshal, please?
- [00:46:50.000].
- [00:46:54.000].
- [00:47:02.000].
- [00:47:10.000].
- [00:47:16.000].
- [00:47:19.000].
- [00:47:23.000].
- [00:47:25.000]Let me just offer one little bit of explanation of why I asked the line to stop.
- [00:47:29.000]One of the things that the University of Nebraska is so proud of is that we distribute the actual diploma on the day of commencement.
- [00:47:38.000]Unlike most universities across the country that mail it to you two or three weeks after your commencement.
- [00:47:45.000].
- [00:47:46.000].
- [00:47:47.000]sorts with our order and it's really important that our students receive their diploma today so
- [00:47:54.920]that they can post it on Instagram and Snapchat and Facebook and all the platforms. So as Chancellor,
- [00:48:03.200]I really appreciate your patience and understanding. I think the head marshal now has us sort of
- [00:48:08.780]organized and we're ready to go and the rest of the proceedings I hope will be without incident.
- [00:48:13.700]But thank you for understanding and especially to the graduates that I had to stop on the
- [00:48:17.600]stage just for a second.
- [00:48:20.600]Thank you very much.
- [00:48:25.600]Professor Gorman, are we good to proceed?
- [00:48:29.100]No, hold on for a second.
- [00:48:31.100]Okay.
- [00:48:33.100]Thank you.
- [00:48:34.100]Thank you very much.
- [00:48:35.100]Thank you very much.
- [00:48:36.100]Thank you very much.
- [00:48:37.100]Thank you very much.
