- [00:03:44.000]the May 2025 Dr. Nicole Frerich Spirit Award.
- [00:03:51.060]Hello, everyone.
- [00:03:59.700]We all fit in the room.
- [00:04:01.360]I'm so excited about this.
- [00:04:03.680]So at every salute, I have the pleasure of presenting the Dr. Nicole Frerich's Award.
- [00:04:09.760]This is an award that we started in 2021 to honor a former colleague and friend and an
- [00:04:17.060]incredible mentor, Dr. Nicole Frerich, who passed away.
- [00:04:20.680]She passed away from breast cancer in 2021 at the age of 35.
- [00:04:26.540]She was an incredible person who cared about students.
- [00:04:32.480]She put students first and was available to students all the time.
- [00:04:37.940]And hers is a legacy that we just all strive to achieve.
- [00:04:43.620]So I have the pleasure of presenting this year's Dr. Nicole Frerich's Award.
- [00:04:50.300]Casner's Spirit Award and this year the award will go to Trey Lamb-Kittens.
- [00:04:58.660]Trey, I'm going to ask Trey to come up on stage with me.
- [00:05:10.140]So here's just a little bit about Trey for all of you.
- [00:05:12.640]Trey's made a lasting impression on the Casner and broader UNL community through its leadership,
- [00:05:18.920]service,
- [00:05:19.920]and delivering resilience.
- [00:05:21.760]Trey faced -- or Trey overcame significant challenges during his college career, including
- [00:05:28.740]the loss of his mom to lung cancer just days before his junior year.
- [00:05:34.140]Trey's determination -- and, yes, he made it to school that first day that year.
- [00:05:38.900]Trey's determination and optimism served as a springboard to push through the difficult
- [00:05:44.300]times, keep going, and complete his bachelor's degree within four years.
- [00:05:49.040]Trey's contribution,
- [00:05:49.540]contributions to the college and to UNL are significant.
- [00:05:54.180]He's been involved in several student organizations, participated on student panels, held two student
- [00:06:00.820]worker positions, volunteered in our community, served as the president of the CASNR Student
- [00:06:06.140]Advisory Board, and participated in fundraising for cancer research.
- [00:06:11.100]But I have to say one of Trey's most meaningful contributions to UNL is founding Husker Cancer
- [00:06:18.160]Support,
- [00:06:19.160]a campus-wide initiative providing community and outreach for those affected by cancer.
- [00:06:27.040]Through his experience, Trey became aware of many other students, faculty, and staff
- [00:06:31.620]on campus who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis either directly or indirectly.
- [00:06:38.040]He was inspired to create an event that could bring people together and build a network
- [00:06:43.320]of support.
- [00:06:44.840]Now in its third year, the event has grown significantly and become
- [00:06:48.780]a UNL tradition.
- [00:06:51.080]Trey embodies the belief that every person and every interaction matters, and there's
- [00:06:56.420]no doubt that he will continue to make a profound difference in the world.
- [00:07:00.880]Congratulations, Trey.
- [00:07:01.960]Many of our
- [00:07:29.760]CASNR graduates
- [00:07:31.580]will be graduating with honors during tomorrow's commencement.
- [00:07:35.980]We would like to take a moment to recognize their accomplishments.
- [00:07:39.180]So, 26 CASNR students are graduating with distinction, which means that they have achieved
- [00:07:45.860]a cumulative GPA of 3.8 to 3.849.
- [00:07:52.100]Since we have the students in the room, if you are one of those individuals, could you
- [00:07:56.220]please stand?
- [00:08:01.200]We have 61 students that are graduating with high distinction and achieved a cumulative
- [00:08:18.020]GPA of 3.85 to 3.919.
- [00:08:23.340]Could those students please stand?
- [00:08:30.820]And 14 CASNR students are graduating with highest distinction.
- [00:08:41.240]They have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.92 to 4.0 and have completed a senior thesis.
- [00:08:49.300]Could those students please stand?
- [00:09:00.440]16 of our students have participated all four years in the university's honors program.
- [00:09:08.840]And then the Chancellor's Scholar.
- [00:09:10.900]This award is designated for students who have received an A on all of their graded
- [00:09:16.560]coursework at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:09:20.460]And this distinction is shared by only 110 students that will be graduating tomorrow.
- [00:09:27.420]And I'm really proud that of those 110 students.
- [00:09:30.060]113 of them are CASNR graduates.
- [00:09:32.960]So if we have any of our Chancellor's Scholars, can you please stand.
- [00:09:46.220]We also have a few of our graduate students who just participated in our graduate commencement
- [00:09:53.140]right before this event.
- [00:09:55.000]And they are also joining us this evening too, so you will get to congratulate them
- [00:09:59.280]as they walk across the stage.
- [00:09:59.680]And then finally, we recognize that each of our graduates has their unique talents and
- [00:10:08.220]gifts.
- [00:10:09.220]They have overcome challenges and leveraged the opportunities provided to them.

- [00:10:49.000]and we decided we needed to build a bigger room to fit everybody, so it's exciting.
- [00:10:54.040]At IANR, we are about the people, the food, the water, and the natural resources.
