- [00:00:00.840]Good afternoon. My name is Marnie Nelson, and I'm the Director of the Global Experiences Office.
- [00:00:06.720]I'm recording this presentation from Louise Pound Hall 130, the headquarters of the Global Experiences Office.
- [00:00:14.760]Today I'm going to share details about the Global Experiences Office with you, and hopefully answer all or some of your questions.
- [00:00:22.820]So let's begin.
- [00:00:27.240]The Global Experiences Office is the central office for all things study abroad, intern abroad, research abroad, and service learning opportunities outside of the United States.
- [00:00:38.660]We work with all eight undergraduate colleges and the College of Law to build unique experiences off campus, abroad, for students who are earning credit for their coursework on these programs.
- [00:00:55.160]Meet the team.
- [00:00:57.060]I'm Marnie.
- [00:00:58.500]Sabrina is our assistant director.
- [00:01:00.900]Ashley is one of our coordinators for architecture, journalism, and mass communications and the Explore Center.
- [00:01:08.580]Abdulai works with the College of Business.
- [00:01:12.080]Rebecca coordinates the Peace Corps Prep Program, an awesome opportunity for students that are looking to pursue the Peace Corps after graduation.
- [00:01:21.460]Renee works with the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:01:24.720]Sook Young with Education and Humanities.
- [00:01:26.980]Trish with Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and Engineering.
- [00:01:32.820]Alicia with Fine and Performing Arts and Honors as well.
- [00:01:37.940]This is the team.
- [00:01:39.940]The coordinators work closely with students, advise students, work with students, talk with students from their unique colleges.
- [00:01:49.100]So again, if your student perhaps is a student in the College of Education and Human Sciences, please direct your student to contact
- [00:01:56.900]Suk Young for any questions or next steps.
- [00:01:59.980]As an example.
- [00:02:03.940]An overview of our office and the programs we offer.
- [00:02:06.940]Again, we offer faculty-led programs.
- [00:02:08.940]A UNL faculty member takes a group of students abroad, and the students often earn UNL credit.
- [00:02:15.940]Affiliate programs.
- [00:02:16.940]We work with organizations and other universities around the United States to send students on programs abroad.
- [00:02:23.940]These are likely where students are earning transfer.
- [00:02:26.820]They can also earn transfer credit from a host university abroad.
- [00:02:29.780]For example, students can study at Westminster University in London and transfer those credits back to the United States and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:02:41.780]Exchange programs are relationships we have with universities abroad.
- [00:02:45.780]One of our most popular exchange programs is Monash University, based in Australia.
- [00:02:51.780]This helps us send students abroad for long-term experiences.
- [00:02:56.740]Students can go abroad for a semester, an academic year.
- [00:03:03.740]We have spring break programs, so 9 or 10 days abroad.
- [00:03:07.740]Winter break programs are usually in early January before the spring semester begins.
- [00:03:13.740]They are tied to a spring semester course.
- [00:03:17.740]Summer programs from as short as two weeks up until 10 to 12 weeks are the length of the summer.
- [00:03:26.660]The experience is not limited to just one semester.
- [00:03:29.660]It is also limited to students who are participating on credit-bearing experiences.
- [00:03:35.660]Finances Abroad, a common question we have from students and families.
- [00:03:39.580]We support students with budgeting and financial preparation.
- [00:03:42.580]We can review different programs.
- [00:03:45.580]For example, a flight to Costa Rica is different than the cost of a flight to Australia, which builds a different budget.
- [00:03:50.580]So we think about those elements when building a budget and considering a program with students.
- [00:03:56.580]We have scholarships available in our office, including a $2,000 planning scholarship, MAPS, which is one scholarship application for a variety of awards that we monitor and support.
- [00:04:09.500]The Edith Weber Scholarship is for students pursuing a language abroad.
- [00:04:13.500]And this is built in Edith's memory, who was very much a linguist and dedicated to language learning.
- [00:04:19.500]There are college scholarships for students in different colleges.
- [00:04:24.460]looking for programs abroad and support on their programs abroad. There are national scholarships,
- [00:04:30.570]including the Gilman Scholarship for students that may be Pell Grant eligible. And we really
- [00:04:36.610]think and consider and help students think about how elements of their own UNL financial aid or
- [00:04:42.030]grants package may support them in going abroad. Every financial aid package and grant package is
- [00:04:47.910]unique, and we work very closely with Husker Hub to support students in answering their questions.
- [00:04:53.010]What are the benefits of going on an experience abroad? Diversifying your academic experience.
- [00:05:02.590]Students may take classes abroad that simply aren't offered here on campus. They may, you know,
- [00:05:07.890]dive deeper into a specific region, and students can have those unique experiences abroad to
- [00:05:13.830]support, you know, their development in their major or their minor. They're strengthening the personal
- [00:05:19.250]and professional development. They're branching out and learning about different places, cultures,
- [00:05:22.990]and people. They're networking and building professional relationships abroad that might
- [00:05:28.430]help them in the future when they're pursuing a career upon graduation. Health and safety
- [00:05:35.110]is our number one priority on our programs. Students do engage in a health clearance process
- [00:05:42.610]to think about their own health and well-being before going abroad. We encourage students and
- [00:05:48.370]support discussions of cultural elements that host country to help them engage in
- [00:05:52.970]health and well-being. All students are enrolled in international health insurance for the duration
- [00:05:58.490]of their program abroad. Programs do have emergency points of contact for response in the host country
- [00:06:05.450]in addition to resources from campus including myself and the director of health and safety here
- [00:06:11.270]on campus, Dave Long, to support in case of emergency. All students attend a presentation
- [00:06:17.470]on health and safety prior to leaving.
- [00:06:22.950]Way students can start this process and become engaged. We have Huskers Abroad 101 and 102 that is offered every week school is in session or classes are in session.
- [00:06:33.410]It's about 20 to 25 minutes of just learning the first steps about going abroad. Students don't need to register. They can just come and show up.
- [00:06:41.690]And then we have various events like the Gilman Scholarship. We have a writing lab for that to support students who are applying to that scholarship. We have study abroad speed dating. We have
- [00:06:52.930]programming for students going abroad, returnees, alumni of our study abroad programs, and international students on campus. And don't forget about our Global Experiences Fair. That'll be on September 16, 2025. It'll be right in front of the Student Union on City Campus. You can't miss it. And we encourage students to attend. It's from 11 to 2 p.m.
- [00:07:15.350]Here are some student stories about their experiences. And again,
- [00:07:22.910]we're looking at, you know, students from a variety of colleges.
- [00:07:25.870]Megan was an architecture student who went to France and Spain.
- [00:07:29.690]Zuleyna was a Spanish major who went to Morocco to study Arabic studies in addition to Spanish during her time there.
- [00:07:40.110]Jessica, an environmental studies and psychology major, went to Indonesia to study community, nature and conservation.
- [00:07:48.570]Carlos went to France to study at the Sorbonne.
- [00:07:52.890]about graphic design. Again, we have programs to support every major and student interest.
- [00:08:03.470]So contact us. Let us know if you have questions. A question we often get from students is when
- [00:08:08.730]should I start planning? The earlier the better. Six months in advance for short-term programs
- [00:08:14.230]and maybe nine months in advance for longer-term experiences. Excuse me. Follow us on Instagram.
- [00:08:22.790]Reach out and make an appointment. Drop by our office. Call. Ask for questions or email us if
- [00:08:28.970]you have questions. You can never start planning too early and make an appointment with your
- [00:08:33.730]coordinator as well. We're always here to help. Thank you so much for all you do. Thank you for
- [00:08:38.690]all your questions. We're happy to help you and have a wonderful day at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:08:43.750]Welcome.
- [00:08:44.210]Lincoln.
- [00:08:44.710]Thank you.
