- [00:00:00.000]Hi everyone, my name is Kate Reyome and I serve as the Associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:09.000]I also serve as the Interfraternity Counsel Advisor and today we'll be talking a little bit more about fraternity chapter living arrangements, what the process is, what to expect once you're living in the facility, etc.
- [00:00:24.000]So again, for today's agenda, we'll be talking about University Approved Housing, or UAH for short, what the contract process looks like for switching over from university housing over to fraternity housing.
- [00:00:36.000]I'll cover some information about costs and amenities that come with living in a fraternity facility. And then I'll also have some information at the end for where you can direct any follow up questions that you might have too.
- [00:00:48.000]So first and foremost, the University of Nebraska Lincoln has a first- year student
- [00:00:53.000]or freshman student
- [00:00:53.000]...
- [00:00:53.000]...
- [00:00:53.000]on-campus housing requirement. So this means that all of our first-year students are required to
- [00:00:57.880]live in university residence halls here on campus. There's one exception with university-approved
- [00:01:04.100]housing, which I'll touch on in the next slide, but with this on-campus residency requirement,
- [00:01:08.820]every student must complete one of the following actions by August 1st in their MyRed account. So
- [00:01:15.040]either completing a housing application to live in the residence halls here on campus,
- [00:01:19.760]or confirming if you'll be living in a university-approved Greek house or fraternity house,
- [00:01:25.080]or submitting a request for exemption from the on-campus housing requirement. So something quick
- [00:01:31.740]to know is to just to prevent any additional fees from the housing process, please take action on
- [00:01:38.100]your MyRed housing portal by August 1st so we can notify our housing folks and let them know that
- [00:01:43.860]they can prepare for you or if you've made other arrangements that you've been approved for instead.
- [00:01:47.700]If you go to
- [00:01:49.200]go.unl.edu/ocrr, which stands for on-campus residency requirement, you can view all of the
- [00:01:56.160]on-campus housing requirements and then also a full list of the exemptions as well, one of
- [00:02:01.620]them being fraternity housing, which we'll get into a little bit more today. So our fraternity
- [00:02:07.500]chapter facilities are university-approved housing units. So again, UNL has a first-year
- [00:02:13.740]on-campus residency requirement that requires our first-year students to live in a university-owned
- [00:02:18.640]residence hall or other university-approved living units, i.e. fraternity facilities.
- [00:02:25.040]Something really important to note is that not all of our IFC or Interfraternity Council
- [00:02:31.120]fraternity chapters operate a facility. 17 of the 24 IFC fraternities that we have here on campus
- [00:02:38.580]do have a facility that their first-year students can live in, but also just keep in mind that not
- [00:02:44.320]all of them will require their first-year students to live in. Not all of them might
- [00:02:48.080]have capacity for all of their first-year students to live in the house, but also you
- [00:02:52.560]might be joining an IFC chapter that doesn't operate a facility as well, which is still a
- [00:02:56.660]fantastic experience, but just something to keep in mind that this might not actually be something
- [00:03:01.080]you even need to worry about. For IFC chapters who are wanting their first-year students to live in
- [00:03:06.360]the facility, they must be compliant with the university-approved housing process. So these 17
- [00:03:12.340]fraternity chapters have applied for university-approved housing. They have a contract between
- [00:03:17.520]university housing, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, and the individual fraternity,
- [00:03:21.900]essentially agreeing that they will be compliant with this list of things. So
- [00:03:25.940]first and foremost is that they must employ a live-in full-time house director or advisor.
- [00:03:32.160]So this is a full-time live-in adult that typically has their own apartment space or
- [00:03:37.380]separate living space normally on the first floor that's really accessible for any students living
- [00:03:42.580]in the facility if there's any emergencies. But they also
- [00:03:46.960]often do a lot of things like facility management, working with external vendors like
- [00:03:53.120]cleaning staff or food staff etc. So all of our chapters that have university approved housing and
- [00:04:00.240]would like for first-year students to live in must employ this full-time live-in advisor house
- [00:04:05.360]director. They also must maintain appropriate property and liability insurance. They also need
- [00:04:11.520]to pass health safety and fire inspections for the facility. So again if first-year students are going
- [00:04:16.400]to be living in a fraternity facility as opposed to university-owned residence halls, we want to
- [00:04:21.760]make sure that it's a safe clean healthy environment for them to be in. They also must
- [00:04:26.640]follow all university alcohol, drug, and weapons policies. We are an alcohol, drug, and weapon-free
- [00:04:33.120]campus and so this also extends to our university-approved housing units
- [00:04:38.320]and our fraternity facilities. So none of these pieces should be found or utilized
- [00:04:42.400]within fraternity facilities on our campus. We take that really seriously.
- [00:04:46.400]All live-in members must participate in SARV, which is Sexual Assault Relationship Violence
- [00:04:51.520]Training, Alcohol Education, and Hazing Education programs. So all of our first-year students
- [00:04:57.360]will attend an in-person SARV workshop and then also complete online
- [00:05:02.000]alcohol education and hazing prevention education modules.
- [00:05:05.680]They also must provide contact information for student leaders and alumni who are responsible
- [00:05:10.880]for the maintenance and management of the facility. So again, for in case of emergency
- [00:05:15.520]purposes, but also sometimes for fun things if we have student life staff or alumni who would like
- [00:05:21.040]to connect with them on getting a house tour, seeing the facility, meeting with some current
- [00:05:25.040]students, we just need to know who we can contact for those things. And then finally, they must
- [00:05:30.160]submit all the appropriate University Approved Housing documents and contracts. So this is proving
- [00:05:34.720]that they have property and liability insurance, they've signed the University Approved Housing
- [00:05:38.560]contract for the academic year, we collect a couple other documents from them. But again, all 17 of our
- [00:05:45.200]fraternity chapters that have housing do have a University Approved Housing for this next year.
- [00:05:49.920]Okay, a little bit more about the contract process. This is a slide that I always recommend
- [00:05:56.480]that people either take a screenshot of if you're watching this online or take your phone and just
- [00:06:00.720]take a photo of it. But first and foremost, fraternity housing contracts are between the
- [00:06:06.480]student and the family and the fraternity. So these are private contracts. None of the
- [00:06:11.680]fraternity facilities, although they look like they're on campus,
- [00:06:14.880]they're technically not. They're all individually owned by each individual fraternal organization.
- [00:06:20.480]And so these are private contracts with a private entity outside of the university. So university
- [00:06:25.600]housing, our office, we are in no way a part of this contract process. So just something
- [00:06:30.400]to keep in mind. But if there's anything that comes up with questions or issues or anything
- [00:06:35.120]with your housing contract with a fraternity chapter, it needs to be handled directly with
- [00:06:39.680]the organization. There's no piece that our office or university housing has,
- [00:06:44.560]as a part of the contract process. So just something to keep in mind.
- [00:06:47.360]These contracts are to be signed before the student is moved into the chapter facility.
- [00:06:52.320]So same way if you were signing a lease for an apartment or house throughout the year,
- [00:06:57.280]you need to sign a lease before you move into the facility. And then this is the part, the actual
- [00:07:04.080]cancellation process. So if you have already completed the university housing application
- [00:07:09.040]to live in an on-campus residence hall, and you have now joined a fraternity chapter with a
- [00:07:14.240]faculty, you're interested in moving in, this is how you cancel your university housing
- [00:07:19.600]contract to then let UNL know I'm going to live in a fraternity chapter instead. So
- [00:07:24.080]step number one is to log into your MyRed account. On the right side of the main screen,
- [00:07:28.960]you're going to see a red housing button that will then take you to enter the housing portal.
- [00:07:33.840]On the top ribbon, you'll see 25-26 new student applications. So you're essentially just
- [00:07:39.360]re-entering the university housing contract you've already completed. There'll be a
- [00:07:43.920]column button that says "confirm your fraternity residence" and then you'll complete this 25-26
- [00:07:49.760]residency exemption application where it's one question where you just select the chapter
- [00:07:54.800]facility or which fraternity chapter house you plan to reside in. Once you've submitted
- [00:07:59.600]this form, it then comes to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and our staff
- [00:08:04.160]will verify your fraternity membership and then approve or deny the request.
- [00:08:08.800]As long as the chapter has marked you on our internal system that you are a new member of
- [00:08:13.600]the organization, we'll go ahead and approve the request.
- [00:08:17.720]Often times the only time that we deny these requests are if a student accidentally lists
- [00:08:22.280]the wrong fraternity.
- [00:08:24.200]similar names, it's okay, it definitely happens sometimes. We'll deny it and then reach out
- [00:08:29.000]to them and say, "Hey, did you actually mean this fraternity instead?" Another reason might
- [00:08:34.140]be that they're not actually a new member of the fraternity. They might just be really
- [00:08:37.680]excited or not quite through the process yet. So you do have to have received and accepted
- [00:08:43.620]a bid to membership in your fraternity to notify us that you are a new member in order
- [00:08:48.200]to be approved for these requests. There is more information about the cancellation fee
- [00:08:53.200]linked here on the housing website, talking a little bit more about the university housing
- [00:08:57.440]contract and the cancellation process. Again, we would like for all students by August 1st
- [00:09:03.500]to have some type of notification of housing within their MyRED, whether that's you're
- [00:09:07.720]living in university housing or Greek residence or you've been exempt from living on campus
- [00:09:13.080]your first year. The housing cancellation fee process does start on July 15th. So we
- [00:09:20.060]would prefer, especially for our fraternity students,
- [00:09:22.980]as soon as you've joined a fraternity and accepted your bid and you've worked out the
- [00:09:26.520]details that you are going to be moving in to go ahead and log into your housing portal
- [00:09:30.500]and let us know that so we can approve you and get you moving along so that we that way
- [00:09:34.720]we can also have plenty of time to notify our friends in university housing as well.
- [00:09:38.880]So as soon as you know you're going to move in, just go ahead and fill out your form and
- [00:09:42.820]we'll get everything moving forward for you.
- [00:09:45.380]Starting July 15th, you get refunded your fall semester housing cost essentially for
- [00:09:51.960]university housing.
- [00:09:52.760]At a slowly decreasing rate by each week.
- [00:09:57.000]So anytime after July 15th, you'll receive a 95% refund up until August 1st, and then
- [00:10:03.080]it slowly gradually goes down and down and down all the way through October.
- [00:10:06.500]I want to say 19th, so you're still able to move into fraternity housing in the first
- [00:10:11.500]month or two of the fall semester.
- [00:10:13.560]Just be aware that you might get a smaller refund from your university housing contract
- [00:10:18.020]than you would have previously to July 15th.
- [00:10:22.540]Okay, so speaking of cost, these are just some average costs for our live-in membership
- [00:10:28.360]but also out-of-house and non-house membership ranges, as well as some common amenities that
- [00:10:33.040]our students will find in fraternity housing.
- [00:10:35.200]So, first and foremost, our live-in membership for IFC fraternities, so again this is amongst
- [00:10:40.500]the 17 with facilities, is anywhere from $8,220 up to $13,600.
- [00:10:49.960]This does include your full room, board,
- [00:10:52.320]meals, Wi-Fi, parking, everything that you would possibly need in your living arrangement,
- [00:10:58.700]plus also the cost of membership.
- [00:11:01.780]Your membership in fraternity and sorority life in your respective organizations does
- [00:11:05.820]have an annual cost.
- [00:11:07.740]And so this is all inclusive of those membership fees, but then also any fees associated with
- [00:11:13.140]living in the facility.
- [00:11:15.160]Some common amenities that students can look forward to in fraternity facilities, firstly
- [00:11:19.820]is a weekday meal plan.
- [00:11:22.100]It really varies depending on the chapter and what meal service they provide, as far
- [00:11:26.480]as if they have a hot breakfast or a toast bar or cereal bar, some more of a cold breakfast
- [00:11:30.860]available, but then often they'll have hot lunch and hot dinner Monday through Friday.
- [00:11:36.520]Some chapters will also have meals provided throughout the weekend, some will not.
- [00:11:42.900]We do have a supplemental meal plan through University Dining.
- [00:11:47.060]So if you go ahead and log on to UNL Dining's website, the gold, silver, and bronze
- [00:11:51.880]plans are specifically made for students in fraternity and sorority life who can help
- [00:11:56.200]supplement some of those missing meals throughout the weekend.
- [00:11:59.020]I will also say all of our meal services through the fraternity facilities are really great
- [00:12:03.840]about making students late plates or keeping leftovers from Thursday and Friday meals into
- [00:12:08.520]the weekend.
- [00:12:09.520]And so typically it's not much of an issue.
- [00:12:11.640]I personally would recommend getting through the first week or two of living in your facility
- [00:12:16.020]and then reassessing to see if or if not an additional meal plan through UNL Dining would
- [00:12:21.000]be necessary.
- [00:12:21.660]You will also get a room in your fraternity facility.
- [00:12:25.500]All of our facilities also have laundry rooms.
- [00:12:29.880]Important question to ask as you're going through the recruitment process or as you're
- [00:12:32.480]signing up to live in your fraternity facility is if the laundry is free or if it's coin
- [00:12:37.120]operated.
- [00:12:38.120]We've kind of got a mixed bag amongst all of the chapters with facilities there.
- [00:12:42.380]Parking is also often an amenity to living in your fraternity facility.
- [00:12:45.620]It's typically included in that live-in membership due, sometimes though parking is given
- [00:12:51.440]based on priority within the fraternity.
- [00:12:53.840]And so if you hold an officer position, if you're chapter president or on the executive
- [00:12:58.320]board, you might have higher priority of getting a parking space, but we also have
- [00:13:04.340]really close parking garages and really nearby proximity to all of our chapter facilities.
- [00:13:10.320]And so if you were needing to buy UNL parking garage pass instead for a slightly or smaller
- [00:13:15.440]additional cost, that would also be another option for parking too.
- [00:13:19.140]So another great question to be asking as you're attending
- [00:13:21.220]recruitment events or getting set up with your chapter's housing for next year.
- [00:13:26.460]You'll have to be supplied with cleaning materials.
- [00:13:28.700]Some of our chapter facilities also hire cleaning services to come in.
- [00:13:32.540]They often do not clean your own personal bedrooms and bathrooms if you have individual
- [00:13:37.360]ones.
- [00:13:38.360]But if you have common or shared bathrooms on each floor, common living room spaces,
- [00:13:42.120]common kitchen spaces, etc, their services that they hire will come in and industrial
- [00:13:46.440]clean those.
- [00:13:47.840]Wi-Fi is often included in your fraternity
- [00:13:51.000]experience as well.
- [00:13:52.000]Obviously, we want our students to be able to do their homework and other things that
- [00:13:56.340]they need to do on their computer while they're at home
- [00:13:58.520]and so Wi-Fi is typically included.
- [00:14:01.200]A lot of our chapter facilities also have study spaces.
- [00:14:03.620]So again, we want to support our students in being academically inclined and getting
- [00:14:07.940]their homework and studying for exams done.
- [00:14:09.960]So typically their study spaces within all of our facilities.
- [00:14:13.700]And then finally, some chapters will also include apparel.
- [00:14:16.760]So if there's a recruitment T-shirt or a philanthropy T-shirt,
- [00:14:20.780]or some type of water bottle for the year that they want to give to all their members.
- [00:14:24.160]A lot of times that's included in the all-inclusive dues that are listed at the top of this slide.
- [00:14:29.220]For our students that are joining chapters that have a housing facility but are not planning
- [00:14:34.120]to live in the house, they're living in university housing,
- [00:14:37.800]or maybe they're a sophomore above and living off campus.
- [00:14:41.880]Their membership ranges anywhere from $2,500 to $4,500 per year.
- [00:14:46.540]Again, this also includes your cost of membership per year.
- [00:14:50.560]Your membership dues, but it also often includes out-of-house meals.
- [00:14:54.620]So if you just want to stop by your fraternity facility for lunch or for dinner, this will
- [00:14:58.960]often include things like that.
- [00:15:00.820]Sometimes temporary parking places are available.
- [00:15:03.440]It really, again, all just depends on the chapter that you've joined.
- [00:15:06.900]But just to kind of give a ballpark range of out-of-house membership dues per year.
- [00:15:11.320]And then for fraternity chapters that are non-house, so they do not have a facility
- [00:15:15.320]that they operate, their dues typically range from $900 to $2,000 per year.
- [00:15:20.340]And again, this is solely for your membership dues or that cost of membership to be a part
- [00:15:25.160]of the organization.
- [00:15:26.840]We highly, highly recommend asking about living accommodations during the recruitment process.
- [00:15:31.680]So as you're attending open recruitment events and getting to know fraternity men and making
- [00:15:36.480]your decision on which chapter you're most interested in joining, we highly recommend
- [00:15:40.700]that you ask questions like, "are first-year freshmen required to live in the facility?"
- [00:15:45.260]"Are executive board members required to live in the facility?" "What's the live-in experience
- [00:15:50.120]like?" "Again, is the laundry free?" "Do I need to bring a bag of quarters with me in the
- [00:15:53.880]fall?" And the current members will definitely be able to answer some of those questions
- [00:15:57.980]for you, but highly recommend, especially if you're looking to join a chapter with a
- [00:16:01.600]facility and live in the first year, that you just ask a lot of questions about what
- [00:16:05.760]their living experience is like, so that can help determine some of your choices, maybe
- [00:16:11.080]on which fraternity you might be most interested in.
- [00:16:15.240]If you have questions on the process, anything that has to do with on-campus residency requirements,
- [00:16:19.900]the contract process, amenities, cost of living in or cost of membership, anything
- [00:16:24.960]under the sun regarding fraternity housing, please reach out to our office.
- [00:16:28.780]Our main phone line is on there too, but you can also find all of our staff contact information
- [00:16:33.220]as well as my own on unl.edu/greek, and then also linked here is a resource site for new
- [00:16:39.120]student enrollment and other resources.
- [00:16:40.780]Thank you all so much for watching today, and Go Big Red!
