- [00:00:00.000]Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, whatever time of the day it is that you are
- [00:00:07.840]tuning into this session. My name is Kerra Russell, and I am the Senior Associate Director in the
- [00:00:14.760]Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center in the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services.
- [00:00:20.140]Today, I will be talking to you about finding belonging through intercultural connections.
- [00:00:28.580]This session will discuss how students can find a sense of belonging at the Jackie Gaughan
- [00:00:33.580]Multicultural Center through OASIS, as well as some of our recognized student organizations.
- [00:00:39.640]Before I begin, I'd like to start with a land grant acknowledgement, which is a formal statement
- [00:00:48.260]to recognize and show respect to Indigenous peoples as traditional stewards of this land.
- [00:00:54.060]The University of Nebraska is a public land grant institution,
- [00:00:58.520]with campuses and programs across the state that reside on the past, present, and future homelands
- [00:01:05.020]of the Pawnee, Ponca, Oto-Missouria, Omaha, Dakota, Lakota, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Kaw peoples,
- [00:01:15.200]as well as the relocated Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), Iowa, and Sac and Fox peoples.
- [00:01:20.720]Now, I would like you to use your imagination,
- [00:01:26.160]close your eyes,
- [00:01:28.260]and
- [00:01:28.500]picture a tree,
- [00:01:29.560]strong, deeply rooted,
- [00:01:32.340]and ever-growing.
- [00:01:33.800]Its branches stretch outward,
- [00:01:36.080]offering shade and shelter.
- [00:01:37.920]Its roots run deep,
- [00:01:40.120]drawing strength from the rich soil
- [00:01:42.480]of knowledge, experiences,
- [00:01:44.240]and shared stories.
- [00:01:45.560]This tree doesn't just stand,
- [00:01:48.400]it nurtures, connects,
- [00:01:50.420]and supports everything around it.
- [00:01:52.840]This is OASIS.
- [00:01:56.160]Like a tree, we are a
- [00:01:58.480]foundation for students to plant their
- [00:02:00.520]ambitions, find support,
- [00:02:02.720]and reach new heights.
- [00:02:03.920]Our branches extend in many directions,
- [00:02:06.900]academic support,
- [00:02:08.320]mentorship, cultural
- [00:02:10.560]exploration, and leadership opportunities,
- [00:02:12.900]each one providing
- [00:02:14.760]the nourishment needed to grow.
- [00:02:16.400]And just as every leaf adds
- [00:02:18.760]to the beauty of the tree,
- [00:02:20.060]every student who steps
- [00:02:22.500]into the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center
- [00:02:24.740]becomes part of something greater.
- [00:02:26.480]A thriving,
- [00:02:28.460]interconnected community
- [00:02:29.740]where no one stands alone.
- [00:02:31.500]Today, I invite you to step
- [00:02:35.220]under the canopy of OASIS
- [00:02:37.120]to explore the roots that anchor us,
- [00:02:40.020]the branches that uplift us,
- [00:02:42.040]and the possibilities that await.
- [00:02:43.920]Because here, growth
- [00:02:46.080]is not just encouraged,
- [00:02:47.520]it's inevitable.
- [00:02:48.600]OASIS is a unit
- [00:02:52.680]within the Student Affairs Division
- [00:02:54.460]located in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center
- [00:02:57.380]on the first floor
- [00:02:58.440]with the William H. Thompson Scholars.
- [00:03:00.700]We have several offices,
- [00:03:02.700]a lounge,
- [00:03:04.140]there's a lobby where students
- [00:03:06.840]like to study and hang out.
- [00:03:09.120]Our second floor consists
- [00:03:11.060]of meeting rooms and study areas.
- [00:03:13.700]And on our third floor,
- [00:03:15.340]we have the Kawasaki Reading Room,
- [00:03:17.540]as well as other meeting rooms
- [00:03:20.620]and offices
- [00:03:21.940]for some of our multicultural
- [00:03:24.180]student organizations.
- [00:03:28.420]So what makes a community
- [00:03:32.080]truly connected?
- [00:03:33.260]At the Jackie Gaughan
- [00:03:35.080]Multicultural Center,
- [00:03:36.100]our mission is to work
- [00:03:37.520]collaboratively with others
- [00:03:39.240]to transform the campus
- [00:03:40.720]into a community
- [00:03:41.780]where members engage
- [00:03:43.520]and build relationships
- [00:03:44.900]through learned experiences.
- [00:03:46.660]We bring people together.
- [00:03:51.640]We create a space
- [00:03:53.120]where students don't just coexist.
- [00:03:54.900]They engage,
- [00:03:56.260]learn from one another,
- [00:03:58.400]and build lasting relationships.
- [00:04:00.400]But we don't stop there.
- [00:04:03.040]Our goal is to shape
- [00:04:05.220]an environment
- [00:04:05.900]where students develop skills
- [00:04:07.740]that will serve them for life,
- [00:04:09.520]helping them understand,
- [00:04:11.360]collaborate,
- [00:04:12.240]and excel in a world
- [00:04:14.280]that is constantly evolving.
- [00:04:16.180]Here, you don't just grow academically.
- [00:04:20.960]You grow as a person
- [00:04:22.940]and you help others
- [00:04:24.120]grow along the way.
- [00:04:28.380]At OASIS, we provide support
- [00:04:32.120]for students who may feel isolated
- [00:04:34.200]because of traits,
- [00:04:35.240]beliefs, or backgrounds.
- [00:04:36.720]We are a place
- [00:04:38.740]that everyone can feel safe.
- [00:04:40.300]The Husker Student Power Framework
- [00:04:42.920]is aligned with all of our programs
- [00:04:45.900]and events.
- [00:04:46.800]And this framework
- [00:04:47.920]is a conceptual framework
- [00:04:50.660]that identifies five key elements
- [00:04:53.040]critical to student success.
- [00:04:54.780]Purpose, ownership, well-being,
- [00:04:58.360]engagement, and relationships,
- [00:05:01.040]promoting belonging
- [00:05:02.540]and academic self-efficacy.
- [00:05:04.460]We strive to educate, inform,
- [00:05:11.200]and empower students, faculty,
- [00:05:13.160]and staff at the university
- [00:05:14.840]by promoting awareness, education,
- [00:05:17.600]exploration, community, and adequacy.
- [00:05:20.860]Awareness is promoted
- [00:05:23.920]through multicultural issues
- [00:05:25.460]and celebration
- [00:05:26.340]through events and programs.
- [00:05:29.220]Education offers transformative
- [00:05:30.960]learning, leadership,
- [00:05:32.040]and academic and social support.
- [00:05:34.160]Exploration guides students
- [00:05:37.280]in academics, careers,
- [00:05:39.100]identity, and social justice.
- [00:05:41.080]Community fosters belonging
- [00:05:43.520]and a home away from home
- [00:05:45.040]for all students.
- [00:05:46.240]And advocacy supports
- [00:05:49.120]marginalized groups
- [00:05:50.360]and empowers students
- [00:05:51.520]to advocate for themselves.
- [00:05:52.920]Think about the first time
- [00:05:55.380]you stepped onto a campus.
- [00:05:56.900]I'm sure it was
- [00:05:58.320]overwhelming.
- [00:05:59.280]Now imagine having a guide,
- [00:06:03.700]not just to places,
- [00:06:05.380]but to opportunities
- [00:06:06.640]that shape your future,
- [00:06:07.880]like a GPS.
- [00:06:08.820]Some of the opportunities
- [00:06:14.900]you can take advantage of
- [00:06:16.380]in the Jackie Gaughan
- [00:06:17.580]Multicultural Center
- [00:06:18.680]are our academic excellence reception,
- [00:06:21.060]where we honor students
- [00:06:23.020]who are sophomore standing
- [00:06:24.720]or above that receive
- [00:06:26.520]a 3.5 GPA or higher
- [00:06:29.190]We also honor our OASIS seniors that are graduating at our graduation reception.
- [00:06:35.830]Additionally, you will also be assigned to a professional staff mentor to serve as similar to a high school counselor.
- [00:06:55.330]The Institute for Innovation in Leadership is a program that allows participants to engage in a variety of learning opportunities and apply their insights through internships,
- [00:07:06.590]externships or specialized projects that align with their interests and career goals.
- [00:07:12.430]Students can refine key workplace skills, including communication, self-motivation, leadership, accountability, teamwork, problem solving,
- [00:07:23.430]adaptability and time management.
- [00:07:25.230]Beyond academics, we believe leadership is something you build through experiences.
- [00:07:32.230]Whether it's leading an event or simply speaking up in a discussion.
- [00:07:36.230]Every step you take here strengthens the skills you'll use in your career and beyond.
- [00:07:48.230]Students, faculty and staff can find community at the JGMC and OASIS through dialogue and personal growth.
- [00:07:55.230]Dish It Up is a weekly conversation where individuals can share personal views, learn from others, and engage in civil discussions concerning current events, topics affecting students' lives, and national/international happenings.
- [00:08:12.230]Late Night Dish It Up is a special edition that's held once a month in collaboration with multicultural student organizations to highlight Heritage Month celebrations,
- [00:08:23.230]Black/Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Native American Heritage Month.
- [00:08:32.230]Our monthly Lunch and Learn series is an open and engaging event for all students, faculty, and staff.
- [00:08:39.230]Each month, we bring together a variety of campus departments, resources, and community partners to help students enhance their learning and development.
- [00:08:50.230]Lastly, the UndocuAlly training
- [00:08:51.230]is open to faculty, staff, students, and community members who want to learn about the U.S. immigration systems and current policies.
- [00:09:02.230]We bring in experts, attorneys to discuss best practices for university employees when working with undocumented student populations, guidance on how to be an ally, and the opportunity to discuss challenges and ways to improve campus climate.
- [00:09:20.230]...
- [00:09:21.230]There are several ways to find community through social engagement.
- [00:09:30.230]For example, the OASIS Kickoff welcomes students to campus with live entertainment and booths with information about how to get involved with student organization.
- [00:09:41.230]The OASIS Student Advisory Board is an organization that is led by students, and they host events for students.
- [00:09:50.230]Building confidence, relationships, and overall development through involvement.
- [00:09:57.230]No matter what your identity or background is, there is something for everyone at the JGMC.
- [00:10:10.230]UNL has over 500 registered student organizations on campus. The images on this slide are some of the student organizations
- [00:10:19.230]that hosted a table at the OASIS kickoff or one of our other staple events called Fiesta on the Green,
- [00:10:27.230]which is hosted in September during Hispanic Heritage Month.
- [00:10:31.230]So students come up with their own games and activities for attendees to learn more about their culture and have some fun while doing it.
- [00:10:48.230]At OASIS, we help students find their way not just around campus, but through their academic journey.
- [00:10:54.230]You can discover resources that make college easier and more rewarding.
- [00:10:59.230]College isn't just about classes. It's about experiences that prepare you for what comes next.
- [00:11:06.230]And that's exactly what we do at OASIS. In today's world, being informed is having power.
- [00:11:13.230]We create spaces where students can engage with real world issues.
- [00:11:17.230]So when you graduate, you're not just prepared for a job, you're prepared for life.
- [00:11:27.230]I know I just threw a lot of information at you. No worries, you don't have to memorize everything.
