- [00:00:06.420]Hello, and welcome to our June edition
- [00:00:09.450]of "Inside Nebraska Business."
- [00:00:12.120]The momentum at the College of Business continues to grow,
- [00:00:16.170]from record breaking enrollment and national rankings,
- [00:00:19.860]to the launch of our new business analytics major.
- [00:00:23.460]With a new core curriculum starting this fall
- [00:00:26.400]for all new freshmen in the college,
- [00:00:28.860]we're also building new partnerships
- [00:00:31.260]to prepare our students to lead the future of business.
- [00:00:36.150]Our Nebraska business graduates
- [00:00:38.070]are the proof of our success.
- [00:00:40.830]They're leading the future of business
- [00:00:42.780]in extraordinary ways,
- [00:00:44.610]shaping industries, starting new businesses,
- [00:00:47.880]and making a real difference in their communities
- [00:00:51.030]across the nation, and beyond.
- [00:00:54.240]They also give back by mentoring students,
- [00:00:57.450]providing internships and full-time jobs,
- [00:01:00.330]and supporting our new initiatives.
- [00:01:03.390]40 years ago, we started recognizing
- [00:01:06.600]these incredible individuals and partners
- [00:01:09.390]who strengthened the Nebraska business community.
- [00:01:13.080]This spring, we honored three alumni and one company
- [00:01:17.040]at the 40th Annual Advisory Board Awards Luncheon.
- [00:01:22.200]We honored Tom Henning with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
- [00:01:26.940]Any success I've personally had,
- [00:01:29.580]personally, or in business,
- [00:01:31.170]has come about because I've surrounded myself
- [00:01:33.750]with a great team.
- [00:01:35.550]I met Candi when we were undergraduates at UNL.
- [00:01:39.210]You know, Winston Churchill once said,
- [00:01:41.047]"My most brilliant achievement
- [00:01:42.690]was my ability to persuade my wife to marry me."
- [00:01:46.710]Well, ditto for me.
- [00:01:49.650]Right people, right seats,
- [00:01:51.750]it's a well-known formula for success in any endeavor,
- [00:01:54.960]and I was so lucky to have a great personal
- [00:01:58.020]and business team.
- [00:02:01.020]Chris Leitner received
- [00:02:02.760]the Business Leadership Award.
- [00:02:05.160]But every accomplishment I've been a part of
- [00:02:07.680]has come from a group of incredibly smart, dedicated people
- [00:02:12.060]pulling in the same direction.
- [00:02:15.060]I had to be convinced to accept this award,
- [00:02:16.830]because I don't view it as mine alone,
- [00:02:19.650]it's a recognition of collective effort, shared vision,
- [00:02:23.280]and relentless teamwork.
- [00:02:24.930]There's the building we're gathered in,
- [00:02:27.060]a tribute to Howard Hawks,
- [00:02:28.770]the founder of Tenaska,
- [00:02:30.540]and a man whose vision and principles
- [00:02:34.110]have deeply influenced the way I try to lead.
- [00:02:36.870]It's a strange, full-circle moment
- [00:02:40.770]to now serve as the CEO of the company he built.
- [00:02:45.420]And to be honored here, under his name,
- [00:02:48.810]at the institution that helped shape both of us,
- [00:02:51.570]is pretty damn special.
- [00:02:53.460]Mike Young accepted the Corporate Leadership Award
- [00:02:56.820]on behalf of GIX Logistics.
- [00:02:59.940]It was somewhat gratifying
- [00:03:01.260]and somewhat comforting to know
- [00:03:02.340]that GIX received this recognition
- [00:03:04.500]for doing the things that we just do,
- [00:03:07.980]it's just part of our expectation, it's part of what we do,
- [00:03:10.320]we try to show up, we try to be present,
- [00:03:11.970]we try to invest in students at UNL, UNK,
- [00:03:15.690]and really, across the states.
- [00:03:18.150]And the Young Alumni Award
- [00:03:19.650]was presented to Ben Williamson.
- [00:03:22.560]I always say, early stage investing,
- [00:03:24.090]there's only four virtues for the investor,
- [00:03:26.730]which are to be accessible, to be relatable,
- [00:03:30.390]to be transparent and honest to the entrepreneur,
- [00:03:33.960]and also to be extremely demanding,
- [00:03:35.850]but extremely supportive.
- [00:03:37.740]I really hope that that mindset
- [00:03:39.510]and the entrepreneurs we've been able to support
- [00:03:42.030]will encourage a lot more of those entrepreneurs
- [00:03:44.310]to take this stage in the near future,
- [00:03:46.380]because they've been the ones that have gone out
- [00:03:48.090]and created real, enduring value in the world.
- [00:03:51.780]A heartfelt congratulations
- [00:03:53.850]to each of our honorees.
- [00:03:55.770]They joined an esteemed group
- [00:03:57.900]that includes Warren Buffet,
- [00:04:00.360]Alice Dittman,
- [00:04:01.740]Joann Martin,
- [00:04:02.970]and Sid Dinsdale.
- [00:04:04.770]Also, thank you to our 19 event sponsors
- [00:04:08.610]who made this special celebration possible.
- [00:04:11.880]Together, we are building business leaders
- [00:04:14.700]like only Nebraska can.
- [00:04:17.400]Go Big Red.
