- [00:00:00.000]Okay, just as a little preface, after seeing the first reflection I did something a little
- [00:00:10.760]different so I'm just going to read it and hopefully it's good.
- [00:00:16.400]Okay, thank you to the College of Arts and Sciences for asking me to speak here today.
- [00:00:24.240]I was pretty surprised to be asked and about that I had no idea what I had to offer to
- [00:00:31.780]all of you here today.
- [00:00:34.000]Honestly, where I'm at, just kind of aimlessly floating, waiting for graduation and then
- [00:00:39.880]trying to find the next thing to do has helped me realize that we might all have something
- [00:00:43.760]in common.
- [00:00:46.080]Everything is confusing and nothing makes sense.
- [00:00:52.040]If I had a conversation with a 18-year-old
- [00:00:54.100]griff, he would be disappointed if he met me today.
- [00:01:01.040]I honestly thought I would be engaged, but if you can imagine, that's not the case.
- [00:01:09.720]I had all these amazing adults and all these people in my life that seemed to have everything
- [00:01:13.620]figured out and I thought I was going to be just like them after I graduated college because
- [00:01:18.160]they had college degrees and you graduate high school, you go to college and then life
- [00:01:22.220]just makes sense.
- [00:01:23.960]Instead, whenever people ask me the age-old question of, "What are you going to do after
- [00:01:28.540]you graduate?"
- [00:01:29.540]I just tell them that same phrase, "Everything is confusing and nothing makes sense."
- [00:01:34.880]The interesting thing, however, is that during my time at Nebraska, as I grew closer with
- [00:01:39.720]friends and faculty, I realized that nobody, not a student, TA, professor, or even administrator,
- [00:01:47.100]has everything figured out.
- [00:01:49.340]That sounds scary, but I think there's some peace to find in that.
- [00:01:53.820]The obvious question now is, "Griff, if those super cool adults that were in your life didn't
- [00:01:58.440]have everything figured out, what was going on with them?"
- [00:02:02.600]I'm still figuring this out because I just said nobody has everything figured out.
- [00:02:08.560]My best guess is that they show up.
- [00:02:12.320]They show up every day for the people they care about, those that depend on them, and
- [00:02:16.640]then also they show up for themselves.
- [00:02:20.020]For me, showing up means continuing to have faith in what I'm doing and knowing that if
- [00:02:24.240]I keep running into the wall of work or whatever it may be, one day it'll turn into a door.
- [00:02:30.480]But also, everyone has their own definition of what showing up means, and that's open
- [00:02:34.980]to interpretation.
- [00:02:37.920]The one and only Dr. Amanda Williamson recently put this idea of showing up into a really
- [00:02:42.920]succinct sentence that I'm gonna try to replicate.
- [00:02:46.800]She said something to the effect of, "No matter what you choose to do in life, you always
- [00:02:50.400]come back to one question: Am I enough?"
- [00:02:54.720]The only correct answer is yes.
- [00:02:57.520]I hope that resonates with you the same way it did with me.
- [00:03:00.580]If you know me personally, you'd know that I really didn't learn that lesson until about
- [00:03:04.080]a month ago.
- [00:03:05.080]That's not super important, you can come find me after and talk about it if you're really
- [00:03:09.200]interested.
- [00:03:10.200]But anyways, my message to everyone here, you are enough.
- [00:03:16.120]Okay?
- [00:03:16.680]I hope you found people in Nebraska that make you feel this way, that reinforce this.
- [00:03:21.980]If not, I hope you've found those people in life.
- [00:03:28.860]But if you haven't, take this as your sign.
- [00:03:32.140]You are enough because you've shown up not only for others, but for yourselves.
- [00:03:35.360]Students, if you are here today, it means you've invested in yourself and invested in
- [00:03:39.440]your education, which I think is absolutely showing up for yourself.
- [00:03:43.040]In addition to your relationships and experiences outside of the classroom.
- [00:03:46.000]Okay?
- [00:03:46.500]So, to the parents in the audience, you've shown up for at least one child for 20-some
- [00:03:53.100]years, and they're through college, so that's no small feat, and I want to congratulate
- [00:03:58.060]on that.
- [00:03:59.060]And then, also, you have your own careers you're working on, so great job.
- [00:04:04.860]So as some of us prepare to move on after graduation, I want you to remember that you
- [00:04:09.620]can be in any room you want to be in.
- [00:04:13.500]If no one has anything...
- [00:04:14.500]If no one has all the things...
- [00:04:15.820]If no one has all the things figured out, who's to tell you you can't be wherever you
- [00:04:19.380]want to be?
- [00:04:21.640]You've proven that by being here today, and honestly just existing, that you belong wherever
- [00:04:26.560]you choose to belong, because everything is confusing, nothing makes sense, but you are
- [00:04:32.480]enough.
- [00:04:33.480]Thank you.
- [00:04:34.060]Thank you.
- [00:04:34.560]Thank you.
- [00:04:35.060]Thank you.
- [00:04:36.820]Thank you.
