- [00:00:04.083]When I joined the UNL Staff
- [00:00:05.833]Mentorship Program, I wasn't really sure exactly what to expect.
- [00:00:09.666]I knew that it would help me develop in some way.
- [00:00:11.916]I was really excited to join it because I'm so new in my role at UNL.
- [00:00:16.375]I decided to become a mentor for the sole purpose of giving back.
- [00:00:21.166]I had someone in my professional career that stepped up to be my mentor,
- [00:00:26.250]and 25 years in, I'm still in communication with them
- [00:00:29.250]and they played a really big role in my career.
- [00:00:31.500]And so I thought it would make sense to do the same for someone else.
- [00:00:35.250]The ultimate goals of the Staff Mentorship Program
- [00:00:38.541]are to help with employee satisfaction,
- [00:00:41.208]help with employee growth and development.
- [00:00:44.750]Also, it's a transfer of institutional knowledge
- [00:00:47.958]that you don't get from sitting in meetings.
- [00:00:50.458]Like, you get that in one on one talking about your experiences,
- [00:00:54.208]talking about your career, and engaging on a personal level.
- [00:00:58.000]Anyone considering becoming a mentor,
- [00:01:00.041]I'd say don't be afraid. Just go for it.
- [00:01:02.875]There's no pressure to feel like you have to know everything
- [00:01:06.583]and to be able to pass that on.
- [00:01:07.666]That's not the way the program's designed or set up.
- [00:01:09.708]It's really to be able to
- [00:01:11.541]have someone who's been at the university for a while
- [00:01:14.791]help and assist and encourage someone who's either new to the university
- [00:01:19.083]or early career and to really just support them.
- [00:01:22.291]I think people think, “Oh, you're the mentor,
- [00:01:24.250]so I should learn everything from you.
- [00:01:26.208]And I'm the mentee, and I don't know anything.”
- [00:01:28.791]And the reality is
- [00:01:29.791]that I learn as much from my mentee as I hope they're learning from me.
- [00:01:33.625]The most valuable aspect of the UNL Mentoring Program,
- [00:01:37.166]is really just making those connections with people who
- [00:01:40.583]can bring new perspective to what you do,
- [00:01:43.583]and then also meeting other
- [00:01:44.875]mentors and mentees
- [00:01:46.208]across the university who are really
- [00:01:48.208]focused on making UNL a better place.
- [00:01:50.916]As a retiree, the Mentorship Program helps
- [00:01:53.541]you stay a little more connected
- [00:01:56.666]to what's going on in the university,
- [00:01:58.958]which, you know, you can kind of lose touch pretty quick.
- [00:02:03.083]So, I've enjoyed that.
- [00:02:05.958]It's a fun thing to do and not,
- [00:02:08.291]“Oh, no, I have to schedule more classes
- [00:02:10.166]or I have to go to another meeting.”
- [00:02:11.500]It's something I want to do and something that's fun to do.
- [00:02:15.083]I feel like I can go to you for pretty much anything that comes up.
- [00:02:19.458]Kind of a “work mom”
- [00:02:21.041]I would say.
- [00:02:22.666]It’s just a great group of people to be around.
- [00:02:24.208]And I think then
- [00:02:25.291]now when I'm walking, you know, across campus to one of my client meetings,
- [00:02:28.541]I know I have that many more people that I can wave
- [00:02:30.416]and smile at and, you know, talk to them or,
- [00:02:32.208]stop them in a building or on campus and say, “Hey, how are you doing?
- [00:02:35.166]How is your mentorship meetings going?” and things like that.
- [00:02:37.333]So it just makes campus that much more of
- [00:02:40.041]a small, friendly, tightknit community.
