- [00:00:00.000]Hello, everyone. Thank you for taking the time to review this resources provided to
- [00:00:05.640]you in collaboration with New Student Enrollment. My name is Joey Lynch, and I am the Director
- [00:00:11.400]of University Advising in the Explore Center. I'm really excited to welcome you and your
- [00:00:15.720]student to the Husker community this fall. It's my pleasure to introduce you to the Exploratory
- [00:00:20.500]and Pre-Professional Advising Center, commonly known as the Explore Center.
- [00:00:27.720]So what we're going to do today is we're going to talk a little bit more about who the Explore
- [00:00:33.360]Center is, including the services that we provide. And after that, I'll speak more in depth into how
- [00:00:38.200]we support you. And I'll introduce you to the tools and resources we'll use to take you from
- [00:00:42.860]deciding to really thriving in your future major and career. And then next, you'll learn about the
- [00:00:50.440]roles in our office and the people ready to partner with you to ensure your success as a
- [00:00:56.920]student on campus.
- [00:00:57.700]And finally, we'll spend some time helping you prepare to get the most out of your academic
- [00:01:01.460]advising appointment that's coming up this summer. So let's go ahead and get started. So who are we?
- [00:01:06.520]Well, in the Explore Center, our mission is all centered on your success. We exist to empower the
- [00:01:11.480]deciding and pre-professional student to thrive academically and cultivate career readiness.
- [00:01:16.640]Beyond that, we are the advising home for students who are deciding. And so that means about a
- [00:01:24.880]quarter of the incoming class
- [00:01:26.420]comes in
- [00:01:27.680]to the Explore Center. And we also know that nationally about 50 to 70 percent of students
- [00:01:33.700]change their major at some point in time of their undergraduate career. And so we also support
- [00:01:39.260]those students. You know, in the Explore Center, we really don't think that you have to have it
- [00:01:45.120]all figured out at the time that you start. And so we really look at deciding students as
- [00:01:51.220]having a lot of courage and also a lot of potential and really being able to unlock
- [00:01:57.660]of what they're really interested in and what they like. We're experts at helping students
- [00:02:03.020]navigate undecidedness, but also academic programs, professional school admission requirements,
- [00:02:07.960]student support services, community resources. And so we work really closely with pre-health
- [00:02:18.260]schools, pre-law schools, and we also have a cohort of students that are pre-engineering.
- [00:02:23.100]So we work really closely with the College of Engineering to help students declare majors, within them
- [00:02:27.640]as well. So I'm going to talk a little bit about how we support each of these cohorts that we work
- [00:02:36.420]with. So let's start with undecided students or undeclared students. So some students are
- [00:02:41.720]undeclared because they're blank slates and they don't know what they want to study and they need
- [00:02:46.500]help identifying just what's available to them. Some might be narrowed down to a few and might
- [00:02:51.340]be deciding between one major or another. And some students are undeclared because they plan
- [00:02:57.620]to declare into a college but need to meet some of the additional requirements that they need to
- [00:03:04.180]get into. So we're really here to support all of them exactly where they're at. And our approach
- [00:03:09.460]really kind of works with everyone. We really focus on individualizing our services to students
- [00:03:16.780]and trying to understand what you need from us and helping you get that.
- [00:03:21.300]So here's part of how we'll do that. We'll help you explore and identify majors. We know
- [00:03:27.600]we're trained on all 150 majors that exist on our campus, and we're really adept at building
- [00:03:34.560]schedules and plans that can keep options open if that's something that you need. But we're also
- [00:03:40.800]really well-versed in helping students unpack their interest skills and values and how those
- [00:03:45.900]might relate to a potential career or a potential major. So we'll probably spend a lot of time
- [00:03:51.320]helping you self-reflect and goal-setting and trying to help you connect your major with
- [00:03:57.580]a future career. So some of you might already know what career you want and that it's in a
- [00:04:04.760]health arena, and you might need to know what you might want to major in. So in the Explore Center,
- [00:04:11.920]we're here to help you do that as well. We advise on 20 pre-health areas, including pre-mortuary
- [00:04:19.060]science, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-nursing, and all of our advisors are trained on all of the prerequisites
- [00:04:27.560]for those health schools. We spend a lot of time connecting admissions professionals at those
- [00:04:33.600]health schools with advisors through what we call our professional school visitor program.
- [00:04:38.120]And we also spend a lot of time working with students on understanding the application process.
- [00:04:44.880]So part of that's shadowing and volunteering. Part of that might be mock interviews or writing
- [00:04:50.120]essays for your application. It might be working on preparing to take some professional admission
- [00:04:56.320]exams.
- [00:04:57.540]So just like undecided, every pre-health student, depending on what pre-health area they're
- [00:05:02.680]looking at and what their interests are, looks a little bit different. And so once again,
- [00:05:08.400]our advisors are trained on all these areas to really kind of customize the work that
- [00:05:13.520]they do with you to best suit your students' needs. For those considering a career in law,
- [00:05:22.240]we also help prepare for admission into law school. So during at UNL, you'll focus
- [00:05:27.520]a lot of your time on developing and demonstrating on your writing, your communication, and your
- [00:05:32.140]critical thinking skills. And similarly to pre-health, law students can major in anything.
- [00:05:44.140]So we also work a lot with pre-law students on helping them choose what major might best
- [00:05:49.720]complement their pre-law career. There aren't any specific courses that law school students
- [00:05:57.500]need to take. So we really focus a lot on major exploration and trying to
- [00:06:03.680]affirm that law is the route that you want to go down. Now I'm going to step up or back a little
- [00:06:09.880]bit and talk about another subset of pre-health students that are a little bit unique for the
- [00:06:16.560]Explore Center, and that's pre-health areas that don't require a bachelor's degree.
- [00:06:21.200]So some of our pre-health students might be pursuing a major that won't require them to
- [00:06:27.480]declare something else. So for instance, pre-nursing spends two years here fulfilling
- [00:06:36.800]prerequisite requirements before transferring to a nursing school. So there are a handful of
- [00:06:43.000]health areas that might not need to declare majors. For instance, dental hygiene, pre-nursing,
- [00:06:50.580]pre-radiation science. And so these majors, we really are focused on making sure you
- [00:06:57.460]are meeting the prerequisites and then helping you with the application process
- [00:07:02.300]to eventually transfer to those schools. So that's something that you and your advisor
- [00:07:06.280]would talk about if you're in one of those health areas at your new student enrollment
- [00:07:10.780]advising appointment. So our fourth cohort is pre-engineering. So
- [00:07:20.380]pre-engineering students are working to declare eventually -- they know what major they want.
- [00:07:25.420]They want to go into the College of Engineering and they're working to eventually declare that.
- [00:07:27.440]So we help those students start making progress on their College of Engineering degree right
- [00:07:35.220]away. We put them in the similar courses for their first semester. We connect
- [00:07:40.620]them with engineering student organizations and competitive teams. And then we're also working on
- [00:07:45.610]them to help them meet some of the entrance requirements to declare into the College of
- [00:07:49.230]Engineering, even as soon as they're at the completion of their first semester.
- [00:07:53.930]So as a student in the Explorer Center, we're going to gauge you in our proven process. And
- [00:08:01.190]this is our commitment to a partnership with you to get you on track and keep you on track towards
- [00:08:05.470]your own success. So this is a process that has helped students find the right major and graduate
- [00:08:10.510]on time. So if you remember, our mission is to empower the deciding and pre-professional student
- [00:08:15.310]to thrive academically and cultivate career-ready confidence. So we work with you to establish
- [00:08:21.110]PACE. And PACE is our customized plan for academic and career exploration.
- [00:08:25.410]It helps keep us moving towards your academic and career goals. And it's initiated with an
- [00:08:33.030]advising hold on your account that you'll need to come in before enrolling in the next semester
- [00:08:40.410]classes. So essentially, it's required advising for all Explore Center students. And we would
- [00:08:45.910]like to meet with you twice a semester. And it's really to help you self-reflect, identify
- [00:08:51.870]what you want your time here at UNL to look like, and trying to set goals and how we can
- [00:08:58.870]accomplish that. At the same time, we want to help address any roadblocks that you might be
- [00:09:03.950]experiencing, as well as planning your courses to make sure you're
- [00:09:10.310]moving towards a four-year graduation.
- [00:09:12.510]So I want to talk a little bit about who our team is and who we are. So this is our team,
- [00:09:19.290]and we've got a few different components of your success team. So during your time in the
- [00:09:27.150]Explorer Center, you'll partner with a team of professionals, and they're really your expert
- [00:09:30.590]generalists, your connection to campus resources, your guides along the way. They'll connect you to
- [00:09:35.910]the greater community, the university community, and the Lincoln community, and they'll really
- [00:09:40.210]kind of give you the kind of the inside scoop on what it takes to get to professional school
- [00:09:44.650]or to declare a major. So the first part of your team includes your academic advisor. So each
- [00:09:51.290]Explorer Center student is assigned to an academic advisor, and your academic advisor is the key
- [00:09:55.910]player in providing you support on your academic progress. This includes course planning, maybe
- [00:10:00.890]it's navigating academic policies. They're the ones that you're going to meet with for your
- [00:10:04.730]PACE meeting. And so they're really a go-to resource to make sure you're moving
- [00:10:10.110]towards graduation or to admission into professional school. So another key player
- [00:10:16.450]that's going to be assigned to your team is your academic navigator. And so academic navigators
- [00:10:21.230]focus on helping you navigate the bends and twists in the road that sometimes catch students off
- [00:10:26.270]guard. So they're kind of monitoring student progress, making sure you're doing okay in classes
- [00:10:31.230]and trying to help anticipate anything that might be coming down
- [00:10:35.030]or any potential roadblocks that might kind of deter you
- [00:10:40.010]in your path here. So as you navigate your first few years at UNL,
- [00:10:43.910]you should know that this team of individuals might reach out to you if you notice something
- [00:10:47.950]that might be presenting a barrier to you or whether you're struggling in a certain course
- [00:10:51.990]or maybe you have something that might delay your
- [00:10:55.990]registration in upcoming semesters. And so there's a good chance
- [00:11:00.170]that you might hear from them. And just remember that those are the
- [00:11:04.070]moments that they're wanting to help and help make sure you understand your options
- [00:11:09.910]and they've got your best interests in mind. So parents, guardians, if you're wondering how your student
- [00:11:13.950]is going to handle the unforeseen, there's support here for them. And students,
- [00:11:18.050]if you're feeling at all anxious about anything or
- [00:11:21.930]feeling like you might not know how to navigate a certain situation, we have help for you.
- [00:11:26.070]And finally, the last key component
- [00:11:29.950]to your success team is going to be a career advisor. And a career
- [00:11:34.110]advisor is here to help kind of take your major exploration to the next level
- [00:11:37.850]and kind of helping you connect
- [00:11:39.810]majors to careers. They might assist you in cover letters
- [00:11:43.910]and resumes and mock interviews. And for our pre-health students, they play a big
- [00:11:48.050]part in helping prepare students for the admission process into professional school.
- [00:11:52.010]And also a big component of your team
- [00:11:55.950]is you, right? You know, you're the most critical player on the team because
- [00:11:59.970]we want you to engage in this process. And no one is more responsible
- [00:12:03.990]for your success than yourself.
- [00:12:06.630]And we are just
- [00:12:09.710]really hoping to encourage you to engage with us. And if you do run into any
- [00:12:14.350]questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to any of the
- [00:12:18.670]people on our team. This is why they work here is because they love helping
- [00:12:22.490]students. Okay. So that was
- [00:12:26.330]the Explore Center and who we are. But before we wrap up,
- [00:12:30.350]I just want to give a few things to help you get the most out of your advising appointment this
- [00:12:34.330]summer. So keep in mind that when you register for your advising
- [00:12:39.610]appointment, you can choose in-person or virtual. Generally, these
- [00:12:44.170]appointments take about anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes. So you're going to want to make sure that
- [00:12:49.350]you prepare and have enough time for that.
- [00:12:53.250]The point of these appointments is really for us to get to know you and what your
- [00:12:59.250]interests are. And we're going to be doing a lot of listening. So hopefully you can prepare to kind of share
- [00:13:03.770]what you're thinking about as far as majors or careers go.
- [00:13:09.510]If you're if you're going to join virtually, please plan to be set up in a quiet space
- [00:13:14.810]and at a laptop or a desktop computer if you can. You know, it's
- [00:13:19.750]it can be kind of difficult if you're trying to do these advising appointments from a phone
- [00:13:24.070]because a lot of it is having to interact with our student
- [00:13:29.650]information system to get you enrolled in classes. And so if you're zooming on your phone and trying to
- [00:13:34.650]use your phone as the computer, it can be pretty tough. Prior to your
- [00:13:39.410]appointment, you're going to want to make sure that you've had time to complete the advising inventory, which is just a little
- [00:13:44.450]questionnaire that helps us understand you better and what you might be interested in so we can prepare
- [00:13:49.670]for our meeting on our end. And also to make sure you take the math placement exam.
- [00:13:54.550]Those are important elements to help us craft an intentional and accurate schedule that is efficient
- [00:13:59.770]for you and so that you can achieve your academic goals as soon as possible.
- [00:14:04.050]You're also going to want to make sure that you can successfully log into your MyRed account.
- [00:14:09.310]And have our Duo, which is our two-step verification sign-in process set up for easy access.
- [00:14:15.510]Also want to make sure that you know what your MyRed password is,
- [00:14:20.370]that can be really helpful as well.
- [00:14:21.930]And once your advising appointment is done, you will be registered for your first semester of classes.
- [00:14:29.590]So your fall classes and you'll officially be a Husker.
- [00:14:32.850]So we can't wait to see you.
- [00:14:35.090]And really, I'm just thrilled that you've chosen UNL
- [00:14:39.210]in the next step in your future.
- [00:14:41.010]You know, it's an honor that we don't take lightly here in the Explore Center.
- [00:14:43.930]We're really excited to help you succeed and we know that you have every chance to do so.
- [00:14:48.990]So whether you're an undecided student, whether you're a student who knows what they want to major in and are working towards that, whether you're wanting a career in health or law, we're really, really excited to get you there.
- [00:15:00.810]So once again, my name is Joey Lynch.
- [00:15:03.030]I'm the Director of University Advising in the Explore Center, and I would invite you if you have any questions or concerns, just
- [00:15:09.110]reach out to us at this contact information on this screen, and with that I'll conclude our presentation and I hope you all are having a great summer.
- [00:15:17.110]Thanks.
