- [00:00:00.000]Thank you for attending our session today. My name is Ronesha Love and I'm the Director of University Career Services.
- [00:00:08.000]Today, your students have been learning about the POWER Framework.
- [00:00:11.000]Throughout this presentation, we will discuss how your students can engage with professionals in the Career Development Network,
- [00:00:17.000]receive career planning tailored to their purpose, a range of opportunities to network and gain skills they need to take ownership of their experiences,
- [00:00:26.000]and ways they can build relationships with alumni and employers.
- [00:00:34.000]The Career Development Network is a group of professionals located across campus who provide personalized support and have expertise in career preparation.
- [00:00:41.000]There are professionals such as career coaches located within each of the colleges who work with all students,
- [00:00:47.000]as well as other professionals who have a focused population in non-academic locations,
- [00:00:52.000]such as the Military Veteran Success Center
- [00:00:55.000]and Athletics Life Skills.
- [00:00:57.000]Students are encouraged to work with career coaches early and often to develop their career plans
- [00:01:02.000]and identify opportunities to gain the skills and expertise they need.
- [00:01:06.000]Professionals are available to meet students wherever they are in their career journey.
- [00:01:10.000]No matter if they're an incoming freshman, preparing for graduation, or alumni,
- [00:01:15.000]there are resources for all Huskers.
- [00:01:19.000]Students are encouraged to take advantage of the number of opportunities and resources available to them
- [00:01:24.000]to build confidence for their unique career journey.
- [00:01:27.000]Some of these include career coaching, access to Handshake, and attending career fairs and events.
- [00:01:33.000]Although there are some resources that are not available for alumni,
- [00:01:37.000]there are still resources they can take advantage of.
- [00:01:40.000]The Alumni Association does provide resources on their website.
- [00:01:44.000]Alumni can also request to meet with a career coach if they'd like assistance with updating their resume
- [00:01:49.000]or preparing for interviews.
- [00:01:51.000]Alumni will retain access to their Handshake account.
- [00:01:53.000]And are able to participate in career fairs and events as an attendee.
- [00:01:59.000]We also encourage alumni to participate in our fairs and events on campus to support undergraduates.
- [00:02:04.000]This may be attending a career fair as a recruiter or participating in a niche event within a college,
- [00:02:09.000]which might include networking or panel discussion.
- [00:02:14.000]As we briefly mentioned, having students meet with their career coach for career planning is to help with
- [00:02:22.000]their purpose is something that students are encouraged to do.
- [00:02:26.000]This can include, but not limited to, assistance with building their resume, interview preparation, career exploration,
- [00:02:33.000]job shadow or conducting an informational interview. Coaches may also help with preparing students for a graduate school or networking with professionals
- [00:02:42.000]in the student's career field of interest.
- [00:02:46.000]Career coaches also provide guidance on how to apply for different opportunities, such as full or part time employment,
- [00:02:51.000]and internships. The Career Development Network provides multiple career fairs and networking events across campus for students to participate in.
- [00:03:01.000]We have many resources on campus that students can use to help in their career journey.
- [00:03:08.000]Handshake is one of them and is an online platform that students can job search for to connect with employers.
- [00:03:17.000]Students can update their profile and add their experiences and academic accomplishments as a way to connect with employers or apply or positions.
- [00:03:20.000]Students can also use handshake to register for events and fairs offered on campus or virtually.
- [00:03:33.000]Additional online resources available for students include interview, which not only assists with interview prep, but resume creation, focus 2 assessments, and what can I do with this major, which students can use both to help with career exploration.
- [00:03:49.000]We also have self-serve headshot stations located in both the city and East Campus unions, where students can receive a free headshot and a career closet located in the College of Business, where students can select up to 3 professional business outfits.
- [00:04:09.000]Career fairs are designed to connect your students with employers to learn about different career opportunities that are available in the skills that employers are looking for.
- [00:04:18.000]As mentioned, there are many fairs and events offered throughout the year for students to attend.
- [00:04:22.000]Our university career internship fair is offered in both fall and spring semesters.
- [00:04:26.000]These fairs are multiple days and are hosted on both East and City campus.
- [00:04:31.000]There can be an upwards of 150 employers who attend on any given day.
- [00:04:35.000]Many employers prefer to speak with freshmen as this gives them an opportunity to start preparing for future opportunities.
- [00:04:42.000]Students are able to meet with coaches prior to attending the fair to help them feel comfortable
- [00:04:47.000]about walking in and starting to network with employers.
- [00:04:52.000]Smaller career fairs that are available are the part-time career fair, which is hosted in the beginning of the school year,
- [00:04:58.000]which allows students to apply for positions before the academic year starts, and the just-in-time fair,
- [00:05:03.000]which allows students to meet with employers if they are still looking for positions towards the end of the academic year.
- [00:05:09.000]Both typically have no more than 35 employers who will attend.
- [00:05:13.000]However, it's still a great opportunity for students
- [00:05:16.000]if they are seeking positions during the school year or at the end of the spring semester.
- [00:05:22.000]Colleges also offer other networking events for students to attend.
- [00:05:27.000]Some examples include the College of Business, Employer in Residence, which is offered daily.
- [00:05:31.000]This opportunity allows employers to recruit Nebraska business students to share their opportunities and build brand awareness.
- [00:05:38.000]Another example would be the College of Arts and Sciences CAS at Work series,
- [00:05:42.000]which allows students to engage with Nebraska employers to learn more
- [00:05:45.000]about opportunities available in a variety of fields.
- [00:05:53.000]All right. So a little bit about part time employment.
- [00:05:59.000]Part time employment is a great opportunity for students to gain skills and help prepare them for their career journey.
- [00:06:05.000]However, with that in mind, we do recommend that students work no more than 20 hours a week while they are balancing academic responsibilities,
- [00:06:14.000]as we do not want them to become overwhelmed with all of their responsibilities between their academics and employment.
- [00:06:21.000]A benefit to gaining on campus employment would be the flexibility and closeness to campus. Outside of attending a career fair.
- [00:06:30.000]To build a relationship with employers, students are encouraged to again use their Handshake account to search for positions.
- [00:06:37.000]As mentioned, Handshake is the online job search platform that we use for employers and students to connect.
- [00:06:43.000]Students create their account by using their @huskers.unl.edu email.
- [00:06:49.000]Once their account is created, they can complete their profile and start searching for opportunities.
- [00:06:54.000]For incoming students, they will receive their @huskers.unl.edu email after they have registered for their courses.
- [00:07:05.000]To help in their search, there are multiple filters that students can use to narrow down the opportunities.
- [00:07:12.000]They might look to search for on-campus work study or they may limit the location miles from campus.
- [00:07:19.000]Again, this will help limit the amount of time that they're spending so they can stay closer to that 20 hours per week,
- [00:07:27.000]but also have that flexibility because it could be on or close to campus.
- [00:07:30.640]Once students have found a position that they're interested in they can apply. We'll note that some
- [00:07:38.080]employers allow students to apply directly on Handshake and others may have students go to
- [00:07:43.720]the employers website to actually submit their application. So as we look kind of at student
- [00:07:51.340]employment, so there's two types of pathways that students could take when it comes to student
- [00:07:59.140]employment. So the first would be just student worker employment and the other would be work
- [00:08:05.740]setting employment. Both may be or may look actually very similar, especially as you look at
- [00:08:12.980]the job titles and responsibilities that the student would perform. However, there are some
- [00:08:18.420]differences between them. So if your student is just applying for a student worker employment,
- [00:08:23.780]they have to be enrolled in courses. And regardless,
- [00:08:29.120]of any status or anything like that, the jobs are going to be offered on campus and they're
- [00:08:35.900]able to apply for it. And they would submit an application just as they would with any of their
- [00:08:39.900]job. And if the on-campus employer requests an interview, they would go through that hiring
- [00:08:45.360]process as well. For work-study employment, work-study is a program funded through federal
- [00:08:53.780]financial aid. And these positions can be located on or off campus,
- [00:08:59.100]if it is an off-campus employer, they essentially have to be approved to participate in the program.
- [00:09:04.780]And only students who are awarded work-study as part of their financial aid package are eligible
- [00:09:11.380]for these jobs. So to that point, work-study students earn money by working assigned hours
- [00:09:19.380]and pay through a regular paycheck. So it's not something that they would receive
- [00:09:23.840]as they would maybe as a grant or anything like that and apply
- [00:09:28.920]through academics, they actually would receive a check.
- [00:09:31.740]And they can only earn up to the amount of what they're awarded. So if they are only awarded
- [00:09:40.500]$1,500 for the semester, that's the max amount that they can make within that. If they work
- [00:09:49.400]X amount of hours and by November they have hit that $1,500, then the employer
- [00:09:58.740]would have to then hire them in a student worker position because they would no longer
- [00:10:05.400]have that award available for them. So there's this QR code. So if you are wanting to learn a
- [00:10:16.960]little bit more specifically about work-study and the requirements for that, but then also
- [00:10:23.500]a student worker employment, you can always scan that QR code and it will take you to a page that
- [00:10:28.560]will give you more detail on all of that. As I mentioned, students for either type of
- [00:10:34.320]employment would have to be enrolled in classes. It's a good idea for students to look for
- [00:10:39.720]opportunities within their academic department. However, some of those positions may not be
- [00:10:46.440]available immediately. So building relationships with other campus employers. So say they receive
- [00:10:54.240]employment in Campus Rec and networking within Campus Rec so building relationships
- [00:10:58.380]within Campus Rec and the leaders there, that could lead to other opportunities that would
- [00:11:04.140]then get them into their academic department at a later time, or at least build the skills
- [00:11:08.900]to put on their resume. So when a position opens up, they're able to apply for it.
- [00:11:13.660]Okay. So at UNL, we believe in the power of experiential learning for career development.
- [00:11:22.820]That's why all students are required to participate in at least one experiential learning
- [00:11:28.200]experience before they graduate. This requirement can be filled by participating in
- [00:11:33.280]an internship, but it can also be fulfilled by any one of the following on this list. So a co-op,
- [00:11:40.580]case or project-based, research, community engagement, education abroad, field work,
- [00:11:47.760]student teaching, education, practicum, creative activity, or leadership.
- [00:11:53.740]Students can learn more about the opportunities available
- [00:11:58.020]in more information on what these experiences are.
- [00:12:01.080]And they can do this by meeting with their career coach.
- [00:12:04.300]Other ways to engage in leadership activities outside of kind of the classroom would be
- [00:12:12.800]for a student to join a recognized student organization or RSO.
- [00:12:16.480]RSOs are great for students to join to help build community and leadership experience
- [00:12:21.700]that relates to their career or personal interests.
- [00:12:24.400]Students can learn more about joining an RSO
- [00:12:27.840]by visiting the Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement, or SLICE, office.
- [00:12:34.780]So, just on a couple of offerings that we have this coming fall.
- [00:12:43.780]So, we believe in the career development activities that we've created,
- [00:12:48.780]or we, sorry, we value career activities
- [00:12:57.660]that can help your students.
- [00:12:59.660]And so, with that, we have created the Career Scholarship Challenge.
- [00:13:03.660]So, this fall semester, students will have the opportunity
- [00:13:06.660]to participate in the Career Development Scholarship Challenge
- [00:13:10.660]from August 24th to November 30th.
- [00:13:13.660]Students must participate and approve career-related activities to qualify.
- [00:13:19.660]Students who complete five tasks in September, sorry,
- [00:13:23.660]complete their fifth task in September, October, or November
- [00:13:27.480]can enter to win a prize, but they have to at least have
- [00:13:32.480]those five in one of those months to qualify.
- [00:13:35.480]And those prizes could be anywhere from a TV to a cooking set,
- [00:13:39.480]just kind of depends, but they usually all are appropriate
- [00:13:43.480]for what your student might be interested in having.
- [00:13:47.480]Students who complete 10 or more tasks from August to November
- [00:13:50.480]can enter to win money towards their spring tuition.
- [00:13:53.480]So they would have to complete the 10th task by the end
- [00:13:57.300]of November 30th in order to be entered to win.
- [00:14:01.300]As I mentioned, the part-time career fair is a fair that we offer
- [00:14:08.300]at the beginning of the school year.
- [00:14:10.300]So Thursday, August 21st, from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.,
- [00:14:14.300]we will host it at the Union in the Ballroom.
- [00:14:17.300]This opportunity will allow your students to connect with employers
- [00:14:20.300]who are offering part-time positions on and off campus.
- [00:14:23.300]Students are encouraged to attend to learn more about the opportunities available
- [00:14:27.120]to them.
- [00:14:28.120]Even if your student is not ready to apply, the fair will allow them to experience a smaller
- [00:14:32.080]career fair and gives them the chance to learn about the many different employers on or near
- [00:14:37.180]campus so they can apply to those positions when they're ready.
- [00:14:44.760]So if you have any questions, please feel free to visit your student's College Career
- [00:14:49.440]Center.
- [00:14:50.440]Otherwise, you can always email careerservices@unl.edu.
- [00:14:56.940]Thank you.
