- [00:00:00.000]Hello, I am Stephen McCoy. I am the Recruiting Operations Officer here at the Army ROTC program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:10.520]I'm going to cover all the options and benefits you will gain from joining the Army ROTC program.
- [00:00:16.620]What is the Army ROTC program?
- [00:00:23.560]The Reserve Training Officer Corps, or ROTC, allows college students to receive their four-year degree while simultaneously taking leadership classes that enables them to commission a second lieutenant's following graduation.
- [00:00:33.300]There is no contractual obligation until junior year. No basic training, complete training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:41.480]You do not have to join basic training to join the ROTC and commission as a lieutenant in the Army.
- [00:00:47.660]You can do all the training here throughout the four years you're at college and you're great.
- [00:00:51.760]You're a freshman.
- [00:00:53.440]And the sophomore classes have no obligation required to take them.
- [00:00:56.540]So even if you do choose not to go that route, you can still take the classes.
- [00:00:59.940]You must be contracted to fulfill your military obligations to take the MS 300s or 400 level classes.
- [00:01:08.300]And if you're an out-of-state student and you're enrolled in the ROTC program,
- [00:01:13.440]you have a minimum of 12 credit hours you're eligible to receive in-state tuition through the Husker Salute Program.
- [00:01:19.480]Here are some opportunities that the ROTC will offer.
- [00:01:26.100]We have some four-year scholarships.
- [00:01:28.000]And in addition to that for national scholarships, we have two, three-year options as well,
- [00:01:35.500]based on the time remaining to complete your degree.
- [00:01:37.400]So if you come in with credits already and it transfers over,
- [00:01:41.140]we can offer you a two- or three-year degree, depending on how many credits you've already earned.
- [00:01:45.000]We also have scholarships for the Army Nursing Program.
- [00:01:48.220]It gives you
- [00:01:49.420]guaranteed placement in the Nursing Corps.
- [00:01:50.920]As well as the Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarships, or the GRFD.
- [00:01:55.700]They also offer two, three, or four-year scholarship options for the National Guard and Reserve.
- [00:02:00.440]If you choose that route, you cannot go active duty.
- [00:02:03.880]You'll either be National Guard or Reserve, respectively.
- [00:02:06.380]What do the scholarships cover?
- [00:02:11.320]We can cover full 100% tuition fees for years here.
- [00:02:15.160]We can also offer room and board.
- [00:02:19.080]That pays $12,000 per year to the students, $6,000 per semester.
- [00:02:23.420]You have to choose one or the other.
- [00:02:25.280]You can't do both.
- [00:02:26.060]We can give you a yearly book stipend of $1,200 per school year.
- [00:02:30.200]If you're going to the nursing program, you'll get that up front.
- [00:02:33.720]For monthly spending stipend, there's $420 per month for the 10-month academic year.
- [00:02:39.380]So every month, with the exception of summer months, you're out for summer break,
- [00:02:44.080]you'll get that $420 per month stipend.
- [00:02:46.480]And as again,
- [00:02:49.020]we have the two, three, four-year scholarship options.
- [00:02:51.540]If you go the four-year route, the first year will be probationary.
- [00:02:56.920]What that means is you can try the ROTC program to see if it's fit for you.
- [00:03:01.660]If you decide to do something else or choose another career path, that's fine.
- [00:03:05.060]You let us know, and you won't owe anything back.
- [00:03:07.800]The requirements for the scholarships, you must be a U.S. citizen,
- [00:03:12.060]be at least 17 years old and under the age of 31 by the time you commission.
- [00:03:16.660]You got to have a high school diploma or equivalent
- [00:03:18.800]and for your high school GPA, it must be at least a 2.5.
- [00:03:23.480]If you're still in high school while applying, you're going to be unweighted.
- [00:03:27.600]By the time you accept the scholarship,
- [00:03:32.260]you must meet the physical weight and height requirements.
- [00:03:34.600]You have to agree to commission and serve in the U.S. Army,
- [00:03:38.740]whether it's active duty, the Reserve, or National Guard.
- [00:03:41.220]And you must be enrolled as a full-time student in ROTC with 12 credits or more.
- [00:03:45.340]For the nursing scholarships, it's generally the same options.
- [00:03:54.380]The only difference is you've got to maintain a GPA of 3.3 per term in accumulative.
- [00:04:00.920]You've got to maintain a healthy lifestyle,
- [00:04:03.280]and you must have guaranteed placement at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
- [00:04:10.480]The height and weight requirements
- [00:04:15.320]and the commission to serve are still the same.
- [00:04:17.440]Here are the numbers of scholarships we have given out,
- [00:04:24.600]as well as cadets that commission without scholarship.
- [00:04:30.320]Some events you can do is the Army ROTC is the color guard for all the Husker football games.
- [00:04:38.620]We do have that stipulation in there.
- [00:04:43.200]If you volunteer or serve in the color guard,
- [00:04:45.300]you will meet recruiting hours or volunteer hours, depending on degree level.
- [00:04:49.460]When we do physical fitness, we sometimes have game days or fun activities like this picture here.
- [00:04:59.880]We had PT on the same day as Halloween, so we chose to do a theme sport competition
- [00:05:06.360]between basketball and dodgeball with every class having a dress theme.
- [00:05:15.280]Here are the military science courses and requirements you will have throughout the semester.
- [00:05:23.930]For 100, 200 level, you have to do all the classes as well as the leadership labs.
- [00:05:28.770]Part of the leadership lab will be PTs in the morning.
- [00:05:32.290]We do PT three times a week, Monday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.,
- [00:05:36.650]and lab will be Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
- [00:05:39.810]You must also take a United States military history course.
- [00:05:43.410]UNL offers the course listed on the screen, and we also do one and done online through Blackboard.
- [00:05:50.110]You can enroll in either, but they must be done by the time you commission.
- [00:05:53.330]For the military science 300-400 level, we have the 300-400 level classes with leadership labs.
- [00:06:00.830]There's also the advanced camp at Cadet Summer Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
- [00:06:05.090]Advanced camps, 35 days.
- [00:06:07.250]That's where you'll go and test your leadership abilities and get evaluated to become placed to see if you can get your dream job or component that you wish to choose.
- [00:06:15.370]Military science leadership labs.
- [00:06:21.530]Here's a picture demonstrating what they do at Labs.
- [00:06:23.350]What you see right here is a cadet giving his op order brief while getting ready for a mission.
- [00:06:29.990]He's got his information given from higher.
- [00:06:32.870]He's conducting it to his leaders so they can start rehearsing, they can start planning, and they go execute said mission.
- [00:06:38.890]All this will be done within two hours on Thursdays, as well as FTX.
- [00:06:43.050]That'll occur once per semester.
- [00:06:44.610]The field training exercises or FTX occurs once per semester.
- [00:06:52.670]They consist of a weekend-long training in which a cadet learns valuable Army skills such as marksmanship, land navigation, and patrolling operations.
- [00:07:00.710]During fall FTX, cadets have extra opportunity to perform in obstacle courses and field leadership reaction courses,
- [00:07:06.070]as well as going down a rappel tower, whether it be the 25-foot incline tower or the 50-foot tower.
- [00:07:14.870]The cadet summer training
- [00:07:22.650]Is a 35-day training event designed to develop cadets' critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- [00:07:27.030]and to forge them into tough, adaptable leaders who can thrive into the biggest and complex environments.
- [00:07:31.830]Cadets are evaluated on their ability to lead squad and platoon levels, both in garrison and tactical environments.
- [00:07:37.670]So you'll be placed in charge of a platoon worth of cadets across the nation.
- [00:07:41.990]You will be evaluated by other cadre members from across the nation.
- [00:07:45.370]They will determine your ability to lead, communicate, and your knowledge,
- [00:07:51.170]both in and out of the field
- [00:07:52.630]in technical environment, and in garrison when it's just conducting PT
- [00:07:55.790]or doing routine day-to-day business.
- [00:07:57.590]This is a requirement in order to commission in the Army.
- [00:08:02.930]You have to do advanced camp and cadet summer training.
- [00:08:06.390]Generally, it's done between your junior and senior year of college.
- [00:08:09.790]Exceptions were made where we have to do them in between the sophomore and junior year
- [00:08:14.890]or during the summer after your senior year.
- [00:08:17.510]Case by case varies.
- [00:08:19.330]The nurse summer training program.
- [00:08:26.570]Cadets with an academic major in nursing are the only cadets eligible to apply for this program.
- [00:08:30.710]Cadets are assigned to the Army medical facilities both in the continental United States
- [00:08:34.950]and outside of continental United States, including Europe.
- [00:08:37.190]The NSTP provides nursing cadets with opportunities to develop and practice leadership in a clinical environment.
- [00:08:43.330]Cadets work side-by-side with an Army nurse core officer receptor.
- [00:08:47.490]Qualified cadets
- [00:08:49.310]must submit an application packet through their brigade nurse counselor to the cadet command chief nurse.
- [00:08:54.750]So what that is, you'll do clinicals at various military Army hospitals.
- [00:09:01.550]For example, Walter Reed in Washington, D.C., or you can go to Womack Army Medical in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
- [00:09:09.850]You can even go as far as Germany or Italy to work at those hospitals.
- [00:09:14.530]You will have to submit a packet, which will go through your cadre.
- [00:09:19.290]and chain of command to myself, and I'll submit it to our brigade nurse,
- [00:09:23.510]and it will send it up to command when approved.
- [00:09:26.470]Generally, those internships are about 30 days.
- [00:09:29.990]In summary, we do have many scholarship options for you at the ROTC program.
- [00:09:46.150]You can do a two-, three-, four-year where there's national scholarship.
- [00:09:49.270]We can offer you the Husker salute for out-of-state students that enroll in the program.
- [00:09:53.130]We do have options for Chapter 33 or Chapter 35 benefit receivers that are coming as well.
