- [00:00:00.160]Hi and welcome to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences
- [00:00:06.160]and Natural Resources. We are so excited that you are here today for our new student enrollment
- [00:00:12.560]session. So to get us started we love to introduce you to a few people you're going to be seeing on
- [00:00:18.400]campus when you get here and the first is Dr. Tom Burkey who as of June 1st is our Interim Dean
- [00:00:24.640]in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources or CASNR for short. Dr. Burkey
- [00:00:31.200]is located in 103 Ag Hall which is where our Dean's office is and that is on East Campus
- [00:00:37.200]and the phone number is there and he would welcome any of you reaching out at any time. You will see
- [00:00:42.400]Tom bumping around campus and probably stopping to chat as you go through. And then we have this
- [00:00:48.480]great team that is part of our Student Success Center. Three fabulous individuals who you will
- [00:00:53.520]see, who you'll get emails from. They run several very signature programs that are an important part
- [00:00:59.600]of our college. So through the student support lens, they are a person for you to reach out to,
- [00:01:06.860]a person for you to contact for a lot of reasons. So if there's a family emergency and you can't
- [00:01:12.000]attend class, that's a great reason to reach out. Maybe you don't know which service at the
- [00:01:18.320]university you need. They are a great resource for you if you're struggling a little,
- [00:01:23.140]they're happy to chat with you, refer you as needed. So they're a great resource, often have
- [00:01:30.260]candy in their offices, they've gotten into popcorn lately, so we would love to connect you
- [00:01:34.900]with them. And just let us know if you're interested in talking with one of them, you can
- [00:01:39.940]reach out. And then they may also reach out to you, which is a part of it. It might be related
- [00:01:45.880]to something that relates to signing up for classes, with registration, maybe support in
- [00:01:51.280]coursework. Maybe they will text you with a question about academic standing or something
- [00:01:56.860]that you're doing, maybe missed a deadline. They are the ones who are going to reach out. So
- [00:02:02.240]be looking forward to hearing more from them as well. They also are your one-stop shop. If you
- [00:02:09.380]have any questions during office hours, outside of office hours, we always want to have one person
- [00:02:15.200]and one phone number that you can save. So save this one. It's 402-472-2201.
- [00:02:21.260]And by all means, parents, students, guardians, spouses, supporters,
- [00:02:28.660]feel free to reach out at any time with any questions at this number.
- [00:02:33.940]And our student success team also is responsible for the great course that is AGRI 042 or
- [00:02:41.760]CASNR Start Smart. And CASNR Start Smart is all set on the Husker Student Power Framework. And
- [00:02:48.200]I'm sure you've heard more about that today already. But if you haven't,
- [00:02:51.240]you will be. And our CASNR Start Smart is required for all of our incoming students,
- [00:02:57.160]transfers, first-time freshmen. It is a pass, no pass class. And it costs, it's zero credits,
- [00:03:03.720]which Lindsay always likes to say is zero dollars, which is awesome. It's just going to help connect
- [00:03:09.360]you with resources at the university and in our college, resources, upcoming deadlines,
- [00:03:14.840]things like that. And Lindsay and Carly are the two that oversee that program. And you should
- [00:03:19.880]feel free to reach out to them with any questions that you have. We also have our CASNR Career
- [00:03:25.960]Center. So we have help getting in. We have help while you're here. And then we have help as you're
- [00:03:30.720]looking forward to all your next steps. But they always like to say this is not a resource to reach
- [00:03:35.460]out to at the last minute when you're worried about as a senior graduating. They want a career
- [00:03:39.920]plan with you all along, help you get experience, connect you with internships, make sure you're
- [00:03:44.660]ready for all the next steps that go with the job search. So usually,
- [00:03:48.520]our fall career fair is only a few weeks into the semester, and it's not too young as a freshman
- [00:03:53.360]or a first-time student on campus to get started there. And they do also oversee our Ensuring Your
- [00:04:02.420]Future program, and this is where we guarantee that you'll have a job offer within six months
- [00:04:08.240]of graduation, or we will pay to retrain you. So some of you may have heard about this on your
- [00:04:13.020]campus visit, and there's three parts to this program. There's the academic side, the involvement
- [00:04:18.360]side, and the experience side. So we want you to go to class. We want you to do well in class
- [00:04:22.840]because that's what employers want to see. But they also, employers want to see leadership
- [00:04:27.320]in our students. And so getting involved, getting some great experience that way,
- [00:04:32.460]and then also getting some real world experience hands-on in whatever job field you're interested
- [00:04:39.100]in, whether it's an internship or another kind of experience. And the CASNR Career Center
- [00:04:43.540]is here to help with that as well. So we do like to talk
- [00:04:48.200]as you make this transition about student success and how you can be make sure you're
- [00:04:54.040]setting forward with both feet in the right direction. For example, academic advising.
- [00:04:59.500]This is when you sign up for classes that's going to happen as part of new student enrollment,
- [00:05:03.920]but it's also going to happen every semester after this. Our academic advisors are amazing.
- [00:05:09.680]We do have individualized advising, whether that's staff advisors or faculty advisors,
- [00:05:14.300]but they know the curriculum very well. They know what you need to do to be successful
- [00:05:18.040]and they are going to help you get there. So that's pretty awesome. The student that
- [00:05:22.360]you have for new student enrollment or the advisor that you have for new student enrollment
- [00:05:26.380]or NSE may be different than your full time academic advisor who will be assigned for
- [00:05:32.040]sure on the first day of school. But in a lot of cases there is overlap there and your
- [00:05:36.500]advisor will be listed in your MyRed account, which is awesome. So it'll be very easy for
- [00:05:41.700]you to see them and you can make an appointment with them via the Student Success Hub. And then of course
- [00:05:47.880]you'd meet with your advisor and pick classes. They're awesome at knowing the back and forth
- [00:05:51.580]between the multiple campuses. They'll help you know what the requirements are to graduate
- [00:05:56.860]in a timely manner. They'll make sure that you're making the most of your education.
- [00:06:00.840]So please make sure that you use your academic advisor. And we also like to talk about classes.
- [00:06:07.180]I know you're shocked to learn that we are encouraging you to show up for classes in
- [00:06:11.120]college, but this is a really great opportunity to see and talk with professors and instructors.
- [00:06:17.720]You want to make sure that you're not missing out on any of the fun or the learning that
- [00:06:21.080]happens in the classroom or outside the classroom, as the pictures indicate. You want to make
- [00:06:25.940]sure that you take advantage of office hours, so making sure that you stop in and talk with
- [00:06:30.800]your instructor. They set that time aside for you, so it's really good to make sure
- [00:06:37.240]that they know who you are and you can feel free asking any questions of them. And it's
- [00:06:41.940]always nice to do that before you really have a problem or if you would happen to struggle
- [00:06:46.340]in that class, you've already got that
- [00:06:47.560]relationship. Definitely get to know your faculty and just remember that plagiarism
- [00:06:54.220]and academic dishonesty are not tolerated.
- [00:06:57.300]All right, so this is my favorite part, talking about getting organized. We can always all
- [00:07:03.360]do better with that. College is going to hit you fast and hard with all the different deadlines
- [00:07:08.320]and so forth. So figure out what works for you as a student, whether that's a planner,
- [00:07:13.720]paper or electronic. I like my electronic one because I can take it
- [00:07:17.400]with me everywhere, but it's what works best for you. Whether it's a Google Calendar where
- [00:07:22.060]you can color code it and it sends you reminders, your Apple Watch, whatever you need.
- [00:07:26.580]Another important part is often in classes in college, you will get a syllabus at the beginning
- [00:07:32.700]of the semester with all the assignments, due dates, quizzes, papers due for the whole semester,
- [00:07:37.440]and it may never be mentioned again, right? Instructors assume you can read it. So put
- [00:07:42.680]those dates in your calendar, in your planner right away so that you're not forgetting anything
- [00:07:47.240]and there's nothing worse than going, oh, I missed that assignment. I totally spaced it off. So keep
- [00:07:52.100]that in mind. And then also make sure you look on the university's academic calendar because guess
- [00:07:57.580]what? We get a couple days off in the fall for fall break. You want to know when you're going
- [00:08:01.680]home for Thanksgiving break or winter break, when classes start back in January, all those important
- [00:08:06.500]dates. So we don't want you to miss any. Make sure you go to that site and put everything in
- [00:08:10.940]your planner right away. And then you're going to have a brand new email as our latest Huskers.
- [00:08:18.340]And once you have signed up for new student, once you've gone through new student enrollment
- [00:08:22.340]and got your classes, then your Huskers email will work.
- [00:08:24.860]Magically, once you become a student by signing up for classes, everything is sent to that
- [00:08:30.380]new Huskers account.
- [00:08:31.620]So you're going to want to make sure that you get that all set up because every communication
- [00:08:37.380]is going to go there and everything from the university from that time forward is going
- [00:08:41.540]to go to that account.
- [00:08:42.360]So you might have had a different account on record before.
- [00:08:44.920]Once you're a student, everything goes there and you don't want to miss an announcement
- [00:08:49.380]from a faculty member, a professor.
- [00:08:51.140]There might be something cool that's happening.
- [00:08:54.620]CASNR loves to give away free ice cream.
- [00:08:57.440]That comes via email.
- [00:08:58.820]There could be scholarship information in there and so forth.
- [00:09:01.700]So make sure you're reading all of that and make sure that you're not losing any email
- [00:09:05.620]by knowing to go to your Huskers account.
- [00:09:07.720]And then, of course, we have other ways to get connected.
- [00:09:11.440]We have a couple weekly emails, the Insider Connections.
- [00:09:14.900]That our Student Success Team sends.
- [00:09:16.620]And that includes all the cool things that are happening on campus,
- [00:09:19.500]clubs and organizations and where they're meeting and scholarships.
- [00:09:22.620]And then we also have our CASNR Career News,
- [00:09:25.280]which has all the next steps that you need when you're getting ready for the career fair
- [00:09:29.300]or internship opportunities.
- [00:09:31.440]There's always a cool discounted professional clothing shopping experience that happens in the fall.
- [00:09:37.120]So you want to make sure that you're reading through those and not missing it.
- [00:09:40.400]They will both come once a week.
- [00:09:42.180]And then, of course, lots of great info on our CASNR social media sites.
- [00:09:45.900]Make sure you're looking through there and not missing anything.
- [00:09:49.820]And then, of course, we also like to talk about all those other things that are not classrooms, right?
- [00:09:57.320]So we have so many different ways to learn through undergraduate research, experiential learning,
- [00:10:02.600]those internships that students have where they get paid to do something that they love
- [00:10:06.780]or that they learn that they're going to love or not.
- [00:10:09.180]And then clubs and organizations.
- [00:10:11.300]There are so many, over 500 clubs at the university.
- [00:10:13.940]More than 50 is part of our college.
- [00:10:16.620]And then, of course, the great trips that you can go on.
- [00:10:18.880]So all of these are going to build your resume.
- [00:10:21.200]You're going to have great experiences, make great connections with faculty, staff, and other students
- [00:10:26.700]and really see the world.
- [00:10:27.840]So keep this in mind that you'll be getting more information on all of these
- [00:10:32.640]and watch our email and watch your email and our website for all those next steps.
- [00:10:38.340]And I also like to talk a little bit about
- [00:10:41.180]student systems, because there are a lot of them and everything is centered on this myUNL homepage.
- [00:10:46.840]So this is what you can use to navigate all the different student systems and all the instructions and so forth.
- [00:10:54.000]So a big one that we talk about a lot is Canvas and Canvas is home for all your classes.
- [00:10:59.180]So that's where instructors will post syllabi and grades, assignments, any of those next steps.
- [00:11:04.700]So keep that in mind.
- [00:11:05.900]You want to make sure that you know where your grades are posted, how you turn in assignments,
- [00:11:11.120]and so forth, and that CASNR Start Smart Class is going to help you with that a little bit.
- [00:11:14.900]The Student Success Hub is where you schedule appointments.
- [00:11:19.180]That could be with advisors,
- [00:11:20.260]that could be with our student support staff,
- [00:11:22.780]it could be instructors.
- [00:11:23.660]All of that goes through there, and it's so awesome because you can see what times they're
- [00:11:27.460]available.
- [00:11:27.780]You can cross-reference with your calendar or planner and then schedule a time, and you
- [00:11:33.420]don't have to go back and forth with a million emails.
- [00:11:35.480]And then you should all be familiar with MyRed at this point.
- [00:11:39.740]That is where you update contact info.
- [00:11:42.320]It's where you pay your bills.
- [00:11:44.600]It's where you sign up for your classes.
- [00:11:46.260]It is where you've accepted your scholarships.
- [00:11:48.760]So make sure that you are aware of all the functionality in MyRed and all the great info
- [00:11:54.820]you can find there.
- [00:11:55.660]We do like to talk a little bit about residence hall life, whether living on campus or off
- [00:12:02.580]campus, knowing where the move-in dates is important, but it's also important to know
- [00:12:06.900]that you're coming to campus ready to meet people.
- [00:12:09.380]So if you're living on campus, it's pretty easy to do by leaving your door open.
- [00:12:13.200]If you're living off campus, make sure you're getting involved in some clubs and organizations
- [00:12:17.160]because we want you to get connected with other peers right away.
- [00:12:21.360]And then, of course, if you're hungry when you're on campus, which I am almost always
- [00:12:27.000]hungry, there are lots of options for you.
- [00:12:29.260]We have dining centers that have great flexibility these days.
- [00:12:33.460]We have Herbie's Markets where you can get your convenience food, mobile ordering options.
- [00:12:39.020]I love to mobile order on East Campus and I can get my chicken strips and french fries
- [00:12:42.660]really quick.
- [00:12:43.260]And then, of course, Starbucks is on East Campus and City Campus.
- [00:12:47.200]So just make sure there's lots of options whether you have a meal plan or not.
- [00:12:50.780]You are not going to go hungry when you're on campus, I promise.
- [00:12:53.540]And then getting back and forth between campuses is always one of those things that students
- [00:12:59.480]are nervous about.
- [00:13:00.420]I promise you, you will figure it out.
- [00:13:02.440]If you want to purchase a parking permit, you can do it online or you can go directly
- [00:13:07.340]to the Parking and
- [00:13:08.660]Transit offices, which is on Stadium Drive.
- [00:13:11.080]Usually the online parking permit works pretty well.
- [00:13:14.460]And so it's going to depend on where your classes are and where you're living, which
- [00:13:19.980]parking permit you want.
- [00:13:21.160]If you need to talk through that, you are always welcome to check in with our student
- [00:13:24.680]success team or me, Sue Ellen, at the East Campus Visitor Center for more questions and
- [00:13:30.440]we can talk through it.
- [00:13:31.220]There's a lovely interactive parking map so you know where you can park.
- [00:13:35.280]And then the bus is awesome.
- [00:13:36.500]You pay for it with your tuition and fees.
- [00:13:38.740]So I always say use the things you pay for.
- [00:13:40.600]You will go back and forth between those campuses, between East Campus and City Campus and Innovation
- [00:13:47.280]Campus through our bus routes.
- [00:13:49.280]So it's very straightforward, especially if you're getting out on East Campus.
- [00:13:53.480]But you'll just need to try it once or twice and it works really well.
- [00:13:58.180]And they'll tell you how to download the bus app as part of your NSE orientation day.
- [00:14:04.860]We also like to address parents,
- [00:14:08.360]guardians, supporters, all those people who are here to help you with your success.
- [00:14:13.020]We know that you care deeply.
- [00:14:15.100]You care deeply about your student success, but we do too.
- [00:14:18.260]Student success is our number one priority.
- [00:14:20.540]And we tend to have students that stay in succeeding CASNR with a really high retention rate.
- [00:14:25.180]We also encourage you to stay in touch with your student when they come to college.
- [00:14:30.900]I've honestly had parents who've said, oh, you know, they're your problem now.
- [00:14:34.600]I sent them off to you.
- [00:14:35.580]Well, we know that it's a joint process and we're going to work
- [00:14:38.160]together on this.
- [00:14:38.860]So make sure you stay in touch with your student.
- [00:14:40.700]Let them know you're thinking of them.
- [00:14:41.940]They may be busy and they may not get right back to you, but that's okay.
- [00:14:46.060]We want them to get busy and interact.
- [00:14:48.260]But we also want them to still have that connection with you at home.
- [00:14:51.600]And then as you have questions, if anything comes up and you're concerned,
- [00:14:55.200]reach out to our CASNR Cares team and the Student Success Center.
- [00:14:57.940]They're here to help.
- [00:14:59.320]And then, of course, trust our advisors.
- [00:15:01.820]These folks know what they're doing.
- [00:15:03.440]They know the puzzle of the multi-campus system, what you need to do to graduate.
- [00:15:07.080]So
- [00:15:07.960]please just know that our advisors have your students' best interests at heart.
- [00:15:12.000]And then we have some big events that will be coming up here on campus.
- [00:15:16.820]I'm always excited.
- [00:15:17.960]"This is CASNR" is our big welcome back.
- [00:15:20.920]Welcome to campus on August 21st.
- [00:15:23.320]It's for all incoming transfer or first-time freshman students.
- [00:15:27.360]We will start that in the Great Plains room of the East Campus Union.
- [00:15:31.360]It's in the afternoon at 2.30.
- [00:15:33.660]And there's always ice cream, fun activities, prizes,
- [00:15:37.760]gifts, all the good things that you could possibly want.
- [00:15:40.080]We also have the Club Fair and East Campus Welcome Back,
- [00:15:43.480]which is the next Thursday, August 28th.
- [00:15:46.000]And it's also in the Great Plains room.
- [00:15:47.980]And that's a lot of fun because it's a really great opportunity.
- [00:15:50.700]All the East Campus-based clubs and organizations are there
- [00:15:54.340]and those that have connections to East Campus.
- [00:15:56.620]So it's really nice because that's a little smaller fair.
- [00:15:59.160]You can really talk with students and student officers,
- [00:16:01.800]really get a feel for everything that's happening
- [00:16:04.180]and what you might be interested in getting involved in.
- [00:16:06.540]And then, of course, lots of websites with events
- [00:16:07.760]So make sure you're checking all those out as well.
- [00:16:10.780]As I mentioned in the beginning, we are so excited to have you,
- [00:16:15.100]have you as part of our CASNR community.
- [00:16:17.120]We're excited for all your next steps and the things that will happen.
- [00:16:20.720]So just let us know as you have questions or if you need anything.
- [00:16:25.260]And, of course, all the links can be found on this site.
- [00:16:29.040]Thank you very much, and I look forward to seeing you on campus very soon!
The screen size you are trying to search captions on is too small!
You can always jump over to MediaHub and check it out there.
