- [00:00:00.000]Welcome to the University Honors Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:10.220]I'm Dr. Tammy Burnett, Director of Operations for Honors.
- [00:00:14.160]If you've already applied and been admitted to Honors, congratulations!
- [00:00:18.200]We look forward to welcoming you in the fall and having you become part of the Nebraska
- [00:00:22.240]Honors community.
- [00:00:24.080]If you're not yet a member of the program and are interested in the future in getting
- [00:00:27.600]involved, we would welcome an application from you at the end of the first semester
- [00:00:32.200]or first year of college.
- [00:00:34.280]We have many students who join us as on-campus scholars after they've already completed
- [00:00:38.960]some of their college experience.
- [00:00:42.240]The Honors program is first and foremost an academic community of scholars who are interested
- [00:00:48.160]in a common commitment to academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and exploring a wide
- [00:00:54.080]range of interdisciplinary options.
- [00:00:57.020]We have approximately 2,000 students across all four years of Honors who represent every
- [00:01:02.180]undergraduate college at the University.
- [00:01:05.080]We also have students in more than 100 different majors.
- [00:01:09.180]Importantly, Honors is an academic program that is flexible enough to work with any major,
- [00:01:15.240]and if you complete our curricular requirements, you will earn special recognition and an academic
- [00:01:20.260]credential on your diploma upon graduating from the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:26.440]Today, I'm going to be sharing a little bit about first-year requirements for Honors students
- [00:01:31.960]to help you prepare to enroll in Honors classes for the fall semester.
- [00:01:36.880]Each student in the Honors program takes a 189H seminar during the fall semester.
- [00:01:42.660]These seminars are three credit hour classes that fulfill ACE, or General Education, requirements
- [00:01:48.040]at the University, and they cover a wide range of unique topics, from the neuroscience of
- [00:01:53.280]zombies to 21st century sports ethics,
- [00:01:55.860]to how to listen to pop music, and many, many more.
- [00:02:00.380]Each of these seminars is designed to be engaging, discussion-based introduction to the Honors
- [00:02:05.180]program in a small classroom setting.
- [00:02:08.320]During the enrollment process, your advisor will help you identify the seminar that's
- [00:02:11.900]the right fit for you, based on your major requirements, the existing ACE credits that
- [00:02:16.720]you've already earned, your scheduling needs, and your unique interests.
- [00:02:21.400]The Honors programs allocate seats in each seminar throughout the summer to ensure that,
- [00:02:25.280]regardless of when you enroll, you'll have the opportunity to enroll in a seminar that
- [00:02:29.480]fits your unique needs.
- [00:02:31.780]Now keep in mind that your top preference in terms of topic may not be the seminar that
- [00:02:35.880]is the best fit for you, so we recommend you pick out several that interest you before
- [00:02:40.120]you meet with your advisor this summer.
- [00:02:44.200]The other Honors course that you should plan for this fall semester is UON 101H: Honors
- [00:02:49.100]Community.
- [00:02:50.540]This one credit hour course is tied to our Peer Mentoring program and is required for
- [00:02:54.700]all first-year students during the fall semester, unless you have a conflicting seminar for
- [00:02:59.780]a scholarship-based program.
- [00:03:01.640]Your advisor will know if this applies to you.
- [00:03:04.600]However, if this is the case, you are still more than welcome to enroll in the UON 101H
- [00:03:09.740]course and take advantage of all that it has to offer.
- [00:03:12.680]Historically, we've found that most students in this situation do choose to take the course
- [00:03:17.480]because they want to be part of building that community.
- [00:03:21.300]One of the unique things about this course is that it's designed and funded by the
- [00:03:24.120]upper class honors students who have given special thought to what it would be most helpful
- [00:03:29.940]to learn as a first-year student.
- [00:03:33.020]During the 101H course, you will be placed in a small group of
- [00:03:36.060]other first-year students and paired with an upper-class Honors student leader who will
- [00:03:40.810]serve as a mentor throughout the semester to help you get plugged into the Honors community,
- [00:03:45.690]connect to resources on campus, and learn about the Honors program requirements and
- [00:03:49.890]opportunities.
- [00:03:51.730]Most importantly, these mentors will help you find your place and your purpose in the
- [00:03:56.170]University of Nebraska Honors program.
- [00:04:00.450]When you register for classes, there are some other things to keep in mind.
- [00:04:04.210]Some departments offer additional Honors courses that frequently fulfill first or second year
- [00:04:08.530]requirements, such as Honors English or Honors Math.
- [00:04:12.290]You can talk with your advisor about whether enrolling in one of these departmental Honors
- [00:04:15.470]courses is the right fit for your fall schedule.
- [00:04:18.630]If you do enroll in one, we would recommend no more than one in addition to the required
- [00:04:22.970]189H and your 101H.
- [00:04:26.810]If you have questions about enrollment after your advising appointment, or if you need
- [00:04:30.890]to make changes to your previously scheduled Honors courses for the fall semester, you
- [00:04:34.190]can contact the Honors Advisors by emailing honors@unl.edu.
- [00:04:40.270]The Honors Program uses a shared advising model, so it means that you can meet with
- [00:04:44.550]anyone in our office that you would like to meet with to talk about additional support
- [00:04:50.050]for integrating Honors into your academic plan.
- [00:04:54.990]As we look ahead to the fall semester, I'd also like to share with you an important opportunity
- [00:04:59.050]to get connected prior to the start of the academic year.
- [00:05:02.670]The Honors Program will once again be hosting
- [00:05:04.170]our annual Link Up to Lincoln program, which aims to provide students in Honors
- [00:05:09.030]an introduction to the City of Lincoln prior to the start of classes.
- [00:05:13.410]Link Up allows you to explore the community and culture of our city
- [00:05:16.550]through a series of curated activities on or near campus.
- [00:05:21.010]This is a great way to meet other first-year Honors students and move in early
- [00:05:24.430]to start discovering all that Lincoln has to offer.
- [00:05:27.610]Space is limited, however, so visit the link on screen to learn more
- [00:05:31.350]and reserve your spot in this exciting Honors event.
- [00:05:34.150]Finally, mark your calendar to join us for Root Beer Floats on August 22, the Friday
- [00:05:41.510]before classes start, and for Honors Week, which takes place from Sunday, September 7
- [00:05:46.970]to Thursday, September 11 this fall semester.
- [00:05:50.570]During this week, our Honors student organizations will host a variety of activities, from a
- [00:05:55.150]game night to a s'mores night to a pancake feed and more, all aimed at connecting our
- [00:06:00.250]Honors community and providing a fun start to our year.
- [00:06:04.130]We'll email you more information about these events towards the end of summer.
- [00:06:09.890]The Honors program faculty and staff look forward to welcoming you to campus this fall.
- [00:06:14.550]We can't wait to see how you will make your mark and take advantage of the opportunities
- [00:06:18.250]that the University Honors program provides.
- [00:06:21.250]Perhaps you'll design and host an after-school club in one of our Lincoln Elementary schools.
- [00:06:26.190]Maybe you'll intern with a local nonprofit through our Honors Intern Foundry program.
- [00:06:31.170]You might study abroad through one of our Honors-specific education abroad experiences
- [00:06:34.110]such as our pre-health trip to Costa Rica, or you could get involved
- [00:06:38.950]in research, as all of our students do at some point.
- [00:06:42.990]And maybe you'll get involved in one of our student organizations and take on a leadership
- [00:06:46.770]role within the Honors community.
- [00:06:50.730]However you choose to engage with the Honors program, we're glad to have you.
- [00:06:54.870]Please reach out to our office throughout the summer with any questions or concerns.
- [00:06:59.290]We'll see you in August!
