- [00:00:00.000]Hello and welcome to our session on how to help your students engage beyond the classroom.
- [00:00:24.680]We are so excited that you're here with us today and that you're engaging in this process
- [00:00:29.120]as your students start their journey at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:32.360]Today, we are going to share with you a few ways that can assist your students during
- [00:00:36.720]their involvement journey here at Nebraska.
- [00:00:39.400]There are numerous ways for your students to get connected across campus and in the
- [00:00:43.000]Lincoln community, and we will cover these resources throughout this presentation as
- [00:00:47.640]well as share with you some helpful tools and other resources.
- [00:00:54.780]Our mission here in the Student Leadership Involvement and Community Engagement Office
- [00:00:59.120]or SLICE is to help your students find ways to get engaged here on campus.
- [00:01:05.700]These involvement and volunteer opportunities will help your students make friends, find
- [00:01:09.660]their community and apply what they are learning in the classroom and give them the skills
- [00:01:14.300]needed for their future career.
- [00:01:16.660]92% of students who are involved in an organization on campus report that their satisfaction with
- [00:01:22.620]their college experience has improved.
- [00:01:25.440]Over 90% of students involved on campus say their leadership,
- [00:01:29.120]teamwork, and communication skills have all improved.
- [00:01:35.540]The SLICE team is made up of a few different areas which provide opportunities for your
- [00:01:39.240]students to get involved.
- [00:01:41.260]Our first area is Recognized Student Organizations, or as we call them, RSOs, and leadership.
- [00:01:49.080]We will help your students gain personal and professional development.
- [00:01:53.220]We have 500+ clubs and organizations that range in purpose and interest.
- [00:01:58.240]We will dive into specifics on how your students can get involved in RSOs later in this presentation.
- [00:02:05.640]Our next area is Campus Nightlife, or as we call it, CNL, along with weekend and international
- [00:02:12.000]programs.
- [00:02:13.460]They provide engagement opportunities specifically during late nights or on the weekends.
- [00:02:18.920]They provide everything and host game nights and global activities, all with the intent
- [00:02:23.680]of helping your students find their community.
- [00:02:27.360]Another area is Dance Marathon.
- [00:02:29.740]It's a philanthropic student club dedicated to raising funds for Children's Nebraska
- [00:02:33.820]and Omaha through numerous activities including Husker-Thon.
- [00:02:38.740]The University Program Council, or UPC Nebraska, is a student programming board that works
- [00:02:44.300]to provide events and programs that are appealing to your students and across campus.
- [00:02:49.820]They bring in speakers, provide make-and-takes, and coordinate concerts through the school
- [00:02:53.960]year, all of which are free for your students to attend.
- [00:02:57.340]Our final area is Community Engagement, and they provide opportunities that extend beyond
- [00:03:03.780]the boundaries of campus.
- [00:03:06.280]Our team is here to help connect your students to volunteer opportunities at local nonprofits
- [00:03:11.560]and get them registered to vote!
- [00:03:16.100]Because there are so many opportunities for your students to be involved in, they may
- [00:03:21.100]feel overwhelmed and do not know where to start.
- [00:03:23.840]To ease this feeling and simplify the process of getting involved,
- [00:03:27.320]we break down the involvement journey into three easy steps.
- [00:03:32.440]The first step is to show up.
- [00:03:35.080]Because how will your students know if they like something if they don't show up and
- [00:03:38.700]try it for themselves?
- [00:03:40.480]We encourage your students to get out of their rooms and show up to events and activities
- [00:03:44.720]across the campus.
- [00:03:46.980]Your students could show up for large events like Party at the Union, attend meetings for
- [00:03:51.540]an hour so that they might be interested in joining, or network with local nonprofits.
- [00:03:57.300]There are many students that the number one reason they don't attend events is because
- [00:04:02.020]they don't want to go alone.
- [00:04:03.920]So we encourage and challenge your students to invite their roommates, classmates, and
- [00:04:09.460]friends to join them in attending events and accept invitations from other students as
- [00:04:13.740]well.
- [00:04:17.880]There are several event calendars available to help your students find events and activities
- [00:04:22.100]that they can attend.
- [00:04:23.100]We'll show you a few of the main events in view on the main event calendar.
- [00:04:27.280]Our first one is the Big Red Welcome calendar.
- [00:04:42.540]The Big Red Welcome website is a calendar and it's a great place to see what's going
- [00:04:46.740]on during the first few weeks of school.
- [00:04:49.760]It will help your students learn campus locations and it includes events specifically created
- [00:04:55.120]to help your students meet each other.
- [00:04:57.260]And right now you can see we've got a couple of things listed in here.
- [00:05:02.400]Things that are coming up.
- [00:05:03.720]Play Fair, Tunnel Walk, Party at the Union, the Involvement Fair, Urban Plunge.
- [00:05:09.500]There's so many events happening that your students can check out and you yourself can
- [00:05:15.320]check out.
- [00:05:16.880]All right.
- [00:05:20.840]So then we have the student events calendar.
- [00:05:23.120]So let me pull that one over as well.
- [00:05:25.940]So when you click on the link.
- [00:05:27.240]That's what you'll see.
- [00:05:28.240]It's right here.
- [00:05:29.860]The student events calendar is another great resource to see what is happening across campus.
- [00:05:34.140]It shows events that are specifically planned for your students.
- [00:05:37.540]It includes big and small events, but also opportunities like workshops, informational
- [00:05:41.900]sessions, support groups and study sessions.
- [00:05:44.360]As you can see here, you can you can either check by the day, you could scroll through
- [00:05:48.540]the months to see what's happening.
- [00:05:51.740]And it's all there for your students.
- [00:05:57.220]So next.
- [00:06:06.700]So we have Handshake, which is a great resource for your students where they can locate volunteer
- [00:06:11.580]opportunities.
- [00:06:12.780]So if you click on this, we'll actually take you to this page.
- [00:06:17.780]All right, so if your students are interested in volunteering at local nonprofits or any
- [00:06:26.820]other sites.
- [00:06:27.200]Then they can log into Handshake using their MyRED credentials.
- [00:06:31.940]There is a video here, we're not going to show it now, but there is one here that'll
- [00:06:35.140]show your students how to search for these opportunities by keyword or organization name
- [00:06:39.800]and sign up to volunteer all within the same platform.
- [00:06:42.740]Let's go ahead and scroll down so you can see.
- [00:06:46.060]And then there's a, if you need to, there's also a transcript to follow along.
- [00:06:50.520]All right, and then the last calendar we have is the NvolveU calendar of events.
- [00:06:57.180]Let me pull that over.
- [00:07:01.140]All right.
- [00:07:04.780]So NvolveU is a website that contains the portals of 500 plus student organizations
- [00:07:11.940]and the event that those RSOs are hosting.
- [00:07:14.860]Your students can get to this calendar of events by clicking NvolveU and then using
- [00:07:20.080]their My Red credentials to log on and click on the calendar icon in the upper left-hand
- [00:07:24.560]screen.
- [00:07:27.160]So, in the left-hand corner of the screen.
- [00:07:29.060]And then this calendar will then pop up and it'll show your students all the events that
- [00:07:33.040]are happening on campus.
- [00:07:36.200]And your students can see anything from meetings to fundraisers, sport practices, and then
- [00:07:41.100]events.
- [00:07:42.100]And they can, all the search options here on the left side will help them out through
- [00:07:46.340]that process.
- [00:07:48.260]All right, okay, so once your students have found something
- [00:07:57.140]that they're interested in, they must be encouraged to sign up.
- [00:08:01.380]Your students can sign up to be a member of an RSO, an intramural sports team, a fraternity
- [00:08:06.540]or sorority, or even sign up to participate in Engage Lincoln monthly opportunities.
- [00:08:12.380]Our SLICE office is frequently asked, is it possible to be over-involved?
- [00:08:17.440]While that is certainly a possibility, we suggest your students start by signing up
- [00:08:22.380]for two RSOs related to their purpose.
- [00:08:26.120]One should be related.
- [00:08:27.120]One should be related to your student's field of study or their career goals, and the other
- [00:08:30.780]to their passions or their interests.
- [00:08:34.000]Exploring organizations that are tied to a specific degree program or professional association
- [00:08:39.780]is a great way to learn more about a particular field of study.
- [00:08:44.420]Another question that our SLICE office is frequently asked is, if I sign up for an RSO,
- [00:08:49.440]am I obligated to participate for the entire semester or the year?
- [00:08:54.900]Absolutely not.
- [00:08:55.900]Figuring out which RSOs are the most important.
- [00:08:57.100]If your students try an RSO but later decide they're no longer interested, that's okay.
- [00:09:06.140]They don't have to continue being involved with that RSO.
- [00:09:09.680]We just encourage them to keep trying until they find the right fit.
- [00:09:16.700]And as mentioned before, there are numerous involvement opportunities for your students
- [00:09:20.420]to be engaged in here at Nebraska, and we want to highlight just a few of them to get
- [00:09:25.080]started.
- [00:09:27.080]NvolveU, which we mentioned earlier.
- [00:09:30.040]NvolveU is our one-stop shop for all things student organizations.
- [00:09:34.400]Your students can now log in using their MyRED credentials.
- [00:09:39.220]So NvolveU is where -- let me pull that over.
- [00:09:42.540]on that. All right. So, NvolveU is where your students can find a current list of all active
- [00:09:51.090]RSOs by clicking organizations or the people icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
- [00:09:57.250]On this page, your students will see a full list of our 500 plus RSOs. On the left-hand side of
- [00:10:04.450]the screen also contains a handy filtering option for your students to narrow down search results.
- [00:10:10.850]Once your students find an organization that looks interesting, they can click into the
- [00:10:15.010]organization portal to find a bit more about the RSO. Your students can check out the description
- [00:10:20.770]and the purpose of the organization, see when and where RSOs are holding their meetings, and
- [00:10:26.210]what kind of events the RSOs will be hosting. All right, so then another opportunity is
- [00:10:34.450]campus recreation. Let me pull that over.
- [00:10:39.170]So, campus recreation provides a great deal of activities for your students to enjoy and
- [00:10:43.890]increase their physical wellness. As you can see, they have the different options here, but another
- [00:10:49.170]opportunity is the outdoor adventure center. It has a rock climbing wall,
- [00:10:56.610]bike shop, outdoor gear rentals, and other amenities.
- [00:11:00.610]They also host adventure trips both in town and out of state. Campus recreation also provides
- [00:11:07.490]intramural sports where your students can play sports against their own peers here in Nebraska,
- [00:11:13.890]or sports clubs which allow your students to compete in regional and national competitions
- [00:11:19.250]against other universities. They also have sport fitness classes that allow your students to work
- [00:11:25.650]out with their peers and try some new forms of exercise. As you can see, there's also aquatics,
- [00:11:32.130]their sport program, youth programs, and then other other types of sports.
- [00:11:35.810]And then other other types of opportunities available as well.
- [00:11:39.090]All right, so next we have involvement fairs, and there are two of them hosted during the first few
- [00:11:51.410]weeks of classes in the fall semester. These are great opportunities for your
- [00:11:55.890]students to interact with club members in person.
- [00:11:58.210]The involvement fairs are hosted in the Nebraska Union here on city campus and in the Nebraska East
- [00:12:05.330]Union on East Campus. If service is up your student's alley, our community engagement team
- [00:12:12.050]can help connect them to volunteer opportunities in Lincoln. Pull that one over. So we plan two-hour,
- [00:12:27.330]all-day, or semester-long service initiatives such as Urban Plunge, Homecoming Blood Drive, MLK
- [00:12:34.850]Day of Service, 9/11 Day of Service, and volunteering at local nonprofits in the
- [00:12:40.610]Lincoln community. As you can see here, there's different places that your students can check out
- [00:12:46.050]and videos to see what's been done in the past. We scroll down, all the different opportunities,
- [00:12:51.970]different databases, engagement maps, and it's all on this page here.
- [00:12:58.370]Your students can also visit our nonprofits and residents multiple times throughout
- [00:13:04.370]the year and they're hosted here in the Nebraska Union. Excuse me. These provide your students with
- [00:13:12.050]opportunities to network with nonprofits, learn about volunteer and internship opportunities as
- [00:13:17.090]well. All right. What? I think I skipped one. Let me go back.
- [00:13:33.890]All right. Now I'm on the right screen. Sorry, I was. Leveling up. Once your students have signed up for a club and or volunteer opportunity, we challenge them to level up and engage on a regular basis. Your students can take on leadership positions within their organization and involvement across campus and in the community. Another way to level up could also include holding an on-campus job or research position.
- [00:14:03.410]Listed here are a few ways that your students can continue to level up while on campus.
- [00:14:11.150]If your students secure on-campus jobs, they will participate in what's called Husker Grow.
- [00:14:25.010]Husker Grow is also called guided reflection on work.
- [00:14:29.350]This is an intentional conversation between your students and their supervisors to focus
- [00:14:32.930]on connecting what they're learning in the classroom with what they're learning in their
- [00:14:37.530]jobs and with their organizations that they might be a part of.
- [00:14:41.390]Your students will have multiple opportunities to coach or mentor peers as well.
- [00:14:45.930]Go ahead and get it.
- [00:14:47.810]Oh, let me show you Husker Grow real quick.
- [00:14:51.730]Oh, I'm sorry.
- [00:14:54.830]We'll move on.
- [00:14:58.730]So there are opportunities included in mentoring.
- [00:15:02.450]Such as an NHRI mentor, a CliftonStrengths coach, a wellness ambassador, a peer mentor
- [00:15:09.330]with the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services, or OASIS, and so much more.
- [00:15:16.930]Your students can also visit our online registration portal found on our Husker Vote Coalition
- [00:15:21.950]website right here.
- [00:15:28.770]So here, your students can also register to vote in Nebraska
- [00:15:31.970]or in another state.
- [00:15:35.270]And listed here, our Vote Ambassadors will assist your students with registering to vote
- [00:15:39.570]during our upcoming primary or general elections.
- [00:15:43.790]See all the different opportunities available in here as well.
- [00:15:47.930]Videos and all the awards that we've won.
- [00:15:58.070]Internships are also available through Handshake on the Career Services
- [00:16:01.490]website.
- [00:16:02.490]Go ahead and pull that one over.
- [00:16:05.730]Alright.
- [00:16:07.030]Your students can engage with employers and search, apply for internships, co-ops, part-time
- [00:16:12.790]or full-time jobs, work-study, and campus employment.
- [00:16:17.370]See you can scroll through here, all the different opportunities that are available are all right
- [00:16:22.170]there.
- [00:16:24.370]And then finally we have education abroad within global experiences.
- [00:16:29.790]Pull over that page for you.
- [00:16:31.010]Holidays, hooking and dragging, here we go, all right.
- [00:16:39.170]So global experiences provide opportunities for your students to study outside of the
- [00:16:43.510]US for a short term or over an entire semester.
- [00:16:49.250]Scroll through and see the different opportunities that are available, all right there.
- [00:16:59.370]We want to ensure that
- [00:17:00.530]your students have a great experience here at Nebraska.
- [00:17:03.630]We believe that every person and every interaction matter and will strive to take full advantage
- [00:17:09.150]of our time with your students to help them grow, succeed, and feel like they belong.
- [00:17:14.410]We know that even simpler interactions make a large impact and we don't want to take that
- [00:17:20.950]for granted.
- [00:17:22.530]All right, Launch Your Husker Experience is a new initiative for your students to find
- [00:17:30.050]community, grow their leadership, and get connected.
- [00:17:33.050]The QR code on the slide allows your students to sign up for a 30-minute one-on-one with
- [00:17:37.710]a SLICE staff member to help them get involved based on their individual interests.
- [00:17:48.710]We hope the information and resources we provided today will be helpful for you and your students
- [00:17:52.850]when it comes to finding involvement opportunities.
- [00:17:55.830]Feel free to check out our website or find us on social media.
- [00:17:59.570]We'll have one last slide here to show you what our website looks like.
- [00:18:03.410]We've got lots of smiling faces, opportunities that are available that are happening, things
- [00:18:08.990]that have just recently happened, it's all right there.
- [00:18:15.710]We would also love to meet your students in person and help them find the right involvement
- [00:18:20.370]once they arrive on campus.
- [00:18:24.950]If your students have questions about involvement and volunteer opportunities on campus, have
- [00:18:29.090]them stop by our SLICE office located in the Nebraska Union on City Campus and the
- [00:18:33.230]Nebraska East Union on East Campus anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
