- [00:00:00.000]Hello, welcome to the presentation for learning and themed communities at the University of Nebraska. I'm Abby Groth and I work with Residence Life. I'll be sharing a little bit today about what it means to be in a learning and a themed community, to help you get prepped and ready to go for what to expect this summer and then when you come back in the fall for move-in.
- [00:00:27.000]So you've chosen to be in a learning or a themed community, which was a great decision.
- [00:00:32.000]We're really excited to provide this opportunity for you to meet people who have something in common with you from the very first day you step on campus.
- [00:00:40.000]Having that social network and the academic support system is so important for thriving in your first year of college.
- [00:00:47.000]And so you really put yourself in a good position to get off on a good foot and make the most of your first year.
- [00:00:55.000]All of our learning communities at Nebraska and our theme communities as well operate under three principles of live, learn, connect.
- [00:01:03.000]So when you're in one of our communities, that means you'll be living amongst other people in that same community.
- [00:01:08.000]Your roommate is most likely going to be a person in that same community, as well as your neighbors on the floor.
- [00:01:14.000]So it's a great way to meet people right away on day one when you move in and you're kind of looking up and down the hall and meeting new people for the first time.
- [00:01:22.000]These are going to be folks that have something in common with you.
- [00:01:23.000]Whether that's a major or a pre-professional path or a program association or an interest in our identity, you're going to be surrounded by people who have some common goals and interests, really make it easy to build that social network.
- [00:01:41.000]You'll also be learning together throughout the year.
- [00:01:44.000]For our learning community students, this happens in a more formal manner.
- [00:01:47.000]You'll be taking shared courses together.
- [00:01:49.000]These courses will be part of your
- [00:01:51.000]schedule when you meet with your advisor.
- [00:01:52.000]Whether you've done that already or whether that's still on the horizon
- [00:01:58.000]Just know that you'll be taking some shared courses with your learning community peers.
- [00:02:02.000]And that means that what you learn in the classroom, you're bringing back to the halls and you can build study groups together,
- [00:02:08.000]work on group projects and really have a sense of camaraderie and collaboration as you pursue your first college courses.
- [00:02:16.000]For our theme community students, you're not taking formal classes together, but you're definitely still learning together.
- [00:02:22.000]Whether you're learning what it means to be an ROTC member or learning all of the outdoor adventures that Lincoln has to offer,
- [00:02:30.000]you're going to be learning in the more wide classroom of the world.
- [00:02:37.000]And then lastly, all of our students connect together with peer mentors, with our faculty and staff sponsors, and of course, with each other.
- [00:02:45.000]As a member of one of our communities,
- [00:02:46.000]you'll have the opportunity to participate in exclusive events throughout the year planned by your peer mentor and your sponsors.
- [00:02:55.000]And these are sometimes social in nature and sometimes they're tied to the focus of your learning community.
- [00:03:01.000]So lots of opportunities to meet friends, have a good time together,
- [00:03:07.000]but then also opportunities to network and start exploring what it means to be in your major and think about different career paths that are available to you.
- [00:03:15.000]This summer, you're going to have a
- [00:03:15.000]few things to keep an eye out for.
- [00:03:24.680]The first is to be checking your email, whether that's the email that you used in your housing
- [00:03:30.920]application or your Husker's email if you've already received that. You're going to be
- [00:03:35.240]receiving a newsletter from us on a bi-weekly basis that will provide a little bit more
- [00:03:39.880]information about campus, about our program, learning and themed communities. You'll get
- [00:03:46.260]a bit of an introduction to your peer mentors, your faculty and staff sponsors, and some
- [00:03:51.440]other fun tips and tricks of how to prepare for college.
- [00:03:55.160]We definitely encourage you to reach out to your roommate. It's never too early to start
- [00:03:58.480]that conversation about what you expect out of that roommate relationship, how you want
- [00:04:03.460]to pursue your year together and then of course you know think about logistical items too like
- [00:04:08.970]who's bringing the microwave or a futon or how you want to entertain guests or hours of waking
- [00:04:16.410]and sleeping and things like that. We also want to hear your t-shirt size and collect some
- [00:04:23.490]information for our learning community themed community yearbook. So this is a fun piece that
- [00:04:28.430]we put together so you get to see names and faces of everyone in our program. We'll have a QR code
- [00:04:33.290]at the end of the presentation that will take you to a form where you can provide that information.
- [00:04:37.470]And then in August, which is going to be here before we know it, look out for communication
- [00:04:42.730]from your peer mentor and they'll be sharing more information about our welcome event.
- [00:04:46.690]So what to expect when you move in, when you do come back in August. First, you're going to meet
- [00:04:54.050]your learning community or themed community neighbors on day one. As soon as you walk into
- [00:04:58.410]the hall and you get to your room, you're going to look up and down the hall and you're going to
- [00:05:01.930]see all of those other people.
- [00:05:03.130]In your community, it's going to be a really cool moment where you get to
- [00:05:06.570]meet other pre-health students or other engineering students or other sports
- [00:05:10.810]communication students and it's just going to be a really fun way
- [00:05:13.770]to really start building that that niche and find your people right off the bat.
- [00:05:18.330]We will have tables in university suites, Massengale and Abel Hall where we'll have
- [00:05:25.450]swag for you. We usually have candy and fun little treats and you can meet our
- [00:05:30.650]professional staff or our student ambassadors.
- [00:05:32.970]So, stop by and say hi on your move-in day.
- [00:05:36.090]And then lastly, you'll meet your peer mentor and you'll start building those
- [00:05:40.410]relationships with your community in a more in-depth fashion at our LCTC welcome event.
- [00:05:46.650]And that's going to be on the morning of Friday, August 22nd.
- [00:05:49.850]So, mark your calendars for that date.
- [00:05:52.170]This is our first event of the year where all of our students come together.
- [00:05:55.690]We've got almost 400 students.
- [00:05:57.690]We play games, there's snacks, we have friendly competition.
- [00:06:02.810]It's a great opportunity to really dig into this learning community and theme community experience.
- [00:06:08.010]And then school's going to start and it's going to feel really busy, but hopefully in a good way.
- [00:06:14.970]As part of the community, you're going to have a lot of opportunities to engage.
- [00:06:20.010]Some of those are going to be pretty informal and casual, like our floor hours,
- [00:06:24.330]which are hosted every week, just a casual time to hang out with your peer mentor and
- [00:06:28.410]your other peers in the learning community or theme community. And then we also have
- [00:06:32.650]our more formal events. Some of those happen on campus, some of those are field trip style,
- [00:06:36.810]where you'll be going off campus. If you're part of a learning community,
- [00:06:41.530]you'll be building that academic support system through the courses that you're taking together.
- [00:06:46.090]So dig into that, take advantage of the knowledge of your peers and rely on them
- [00:06:50.410]as you start working on those first assignments and preparing for first exams.
- [00:06:54.650]And then lastly, just put your best foot forward, engage in this opportunity. The more you put
- [00:07:02.490]in the more you'll get out and there's no reason to not try it and see what a learning community
- [00:07:08.010]or a theme community can provide for you. You've opted into this experience so own that and I
- [00:07:15.290]promise it'll be a great opportunity, it'll be a great time for you if you are willing to give it
- [00:07:20.170]a chance. So we hope to see you at our welcome event and then all the subsequent opportunities
- [00:07:25.770]we have after that. Here's the QR code I told you about. If you scan this it'll take you to a
- [00:07:32.330]pretty short form. We definitely want to get your t-shirt size and then we'd love to grab
- [00:07:36.890]a little bit of information about you to provide in our yearbook so that you can start seeing all
- [00:07:42.330]of the different folks in our programs and it's sometimes fun to see people in the other
- [00:07:45.930]learning communities too and who's a part of those groups. So grab that QR code
- [00:07:52.170]and then lastly here's our contact information again. If you need anything over the summer
- [00:07:57.530]please don't hesitate to reach out. Can't wait to see you on campus in August.
- [00:08:02.170]Bye.
- [00:08:02.730]...
