- [00:00:00.000]Hello, thanks for taking time to watch the College of Education and Human Sciences session for New Student Enrollment for incoming students who are joining us in the 2025 academic year, as well as their guests.
- [00:00:18.400]At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, there are several different colleges that make up the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:26.880]Each college will be a little different in regards to what the faculty there teach and research and what type of jobs students might plan for based on the nature of the college that they're in.
- [00:00:38.500]The College of Education and Human Sciences is a medium-sized college.
- [00:00:42.820]We usually have about 450 incoming freshmen, and we have usually about 2,400 undergrad students who are pursuing their bachelor's degree with us.
- [00:00:52.580]We are a college that really is focused on preparing people
- [00:00:56.860]to become educators, healthcare providers, and entrepreneurs.
- [00:01:00.380]We think about our college as the people's college, and really how we impact people throughout their lives in really positive ways.
- [00:01:08.600]All the way from early childhood up to medical care for those at later stages in their life.
- [00:01:16.640]Here you can see some of the areas that our focus is on with our research and our teaching.
- [00:01:23.320]Thriving young children, comprehensive health and well-being,
- [00:01:27.320]and helping build strong communities.
- [00:01:29.280]Each college is going to have different majors or degree programs that students might study.
- [00:01:35.840]At our college, we have four different areas where students can find their right fit major for them based on what they're interested in doing.
- [00:01:43.060]So we have many different programs in the area of teacher education.
- [00:01:46.920]Preparing students to work with some of our youngest learners
- [00:01:49.960]all the way through secondary education.
- [00:01:52.560]In human sciences, we have some programs where students can learn to do their own thing.
- [00:01:56.820]Students might be working in a field similar to social work,
- [00:02:00.820]they might be interested in becoming a licensed mental health practitioner,
- [00:02:04.600]or they might be in the hospitality area, for example.
- [00:02:08.800]Health and well-being is a pretty big area within our college as well.
- [00:02:12.920]You'll find in our nutrition department, we have a lot of students who are also pursuing a pre-health pathway.
- [00:02:18.960]And then textiles, merchandising, and fashion design is a department that has anything from the design aspect
- [00:02:26.800]of the textile industry to the marketing of textiles and the science behind textile science.
- [00:02:35.660]No matter what major you're studying within the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:02:41.540]or here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, most degrees are going to have some of the same components.
- [00:02:47.420]Most of our degrees at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are 120 credit hours,
- [00:02:52.520]with 30 credit hours being what we call ACE, Achievement Center Education,
- [00:02:57.620]at UNL, that's what we refer to as our general education.
- [00:03:00.540]One thing I really like about our ACE program is it is infused throughout a student's degree program,
- [00:03:05.940]which means while you will have some Gen Ed or ACE classes in your first semester,
- [00:03:10.080]you'll also have time for those major specific classes,
- [00:03:12.880]because your ACE courses are kind of spread out throughout your degree program here
- [00:03:17.340]within the College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:03:20.040]Most of your coursework is going to be related to your specific major that you want to study,
- [00:03:24.940]and then you're going to have some supporting courses,
- [00:03:26.760]coursework to meet those 120 credit hours to earn your degree.
- [00:03:30.720]When you meet with your advisor along the way, as you get started here at the university,
- [00:03:35.480]you'll learn about all your specific degree requirements,
- [00:03:38.140]but that's just a brief overview of the different components of a degree here
- [00:03:42.680]in the College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:03:44.880]We know everyone who's coming to college has already seen academic success.
- [00:03:51.020]Maybe you are coming in as a transfer student from a different university or community college,
- [00:03:57.360]and maybe, like most of you, you just graduated high school and you're going to start your
- [00:04:01.280]college career with us.
- [00:04:02.320]So we know, you know, how to be successful in the classroom.
- [00:04:06.340]We do want to remind you as you come to college, especially if you are coming straight from
- [00:04:10.360]high school, there are going to be some transitions in how you spend your time.
- [00:04:15.880]Oftentimes in college, it feels like you have more time because you're in class less
- [00:04:20.380]and that means you actually do more classwork outside of your actual course meeting times
- [00:04:26.300]compared to
- [00:04:26.720]maybe you did in high school for some of you.
- [00:04:28.540]So some key principles to being successful in college are being a full-time student,
- [00:04:35.600]staying in good academic standing, and on-time graduation.
- [00:04:39.360]So being a full-time student, to be a full-time student, you have to be enrolled in 12 credit
- [00:04:46.900]hours.
- [00:04:47.360]Those 12 credit hours could be four different classes that are three credit hours each.
- [00:04:54.600]Students can take more
- [00:04:56.700]than 12 credit hours a semester.
- [00:04:58.540]Oftentimes, students will take more than those 12 credit hours a semester.
- [00:05:02.740]Like I said earlier, our degree programs are 120 credit hours.
- [00:05:06.660]And so if you only take 12 credits each semester, you won't hit that 120 credit hours in four
- [00:05:12.240]years.
- [00:05:12.660]Most students, once they have their footing here at the university, are going to take
- [00:05:16.320]between 15, 16 credit hours a semester.
- [00:05:18.700]So if you try to earn 15 hours in the fall, 15 hours in the spring, 30 hours a year, over
- [00:05:25.540]four years, that neatly
- [00:05:26.680]meets that 120 credit hours.
- [00:05:28.600]So your first semester, probably what's more important than how many credit hours you're
- [00:05:33.380]in is just to be full-time at 12 credit hours.
- [00:05:36.380]And if you want to have additional credit hours, that is great.
- [00:05:40.180]We do see students perform a little bit better academically with a higher GPA if they take
- [00:05:46.220]more credit hours, but definitely you want to balance that with the transition you're
- [00:05:50.460]going to experience coming into college.
- [00:05:52.680]Full-time student status matters for a lot of reasons.
- [00:05:56.280]So again, most of our students are going to
- [00:05:56.660]have at least 12 credit hours.
- [00:05:59.140]That matters for living on campus, most importantly, scholarships and financial aid, and some other
- [00:06:06.160]kind of factors to consider as you move into college.
- [00:06:09.200]Good academic standing,
- [00:06:11.300]like I said, I know everyone's building upon some academic success to be admitted to the
- [00:06:15.700]university, so we know you've seen success and you can be successful here.
- [00:06:19.380]At the university, good academic success, our standing is defined as a specific grade
- [00:06:26.060]point average.
- [00:06:26.640]And so that minimum grade point average for good academic standing is a 2.0 semester and
- [00:06:33.520]or cumulative GPA.
- [00:06:34.820]Now that 2.0 kind of translates into a C average.
- [00:06:38.960]And so I'm sure most of you have ambitions of having much higher grades than that in
- [00:06:44.920]each class and every semester.
- [00:06:46.660]And in our college, it is pretty likely that students are graduating with a GPA much higher
- [00:06:52.440]than that, right?
- [00:06:53.120]Most of our students are graduating between a 3.5 and a 4.0.
- [00:06:56.620]So you're definitely joining a college where there's a lot of commitment to academic excellence.
- [00:07:03.800]But it's important to know that there is that baseline of at least a 2.0 to continue to
- [00:07:08.960]move through the university.
- [00:07:09.820]If you are a student or you have a student who struggles in a semester and drops below
- [00:07:16.160]that 2.0, there is a process where academic advising is going to work a little bit closer
- [00:07:21.320]with that student to kind of fine tune maybe course choices,
- [00:07:26.600]major selection, sequence of courses, think about what's impacting your academics outside
- [00:07:32.620]of your actual academics, things like, you know, working a job, making sure that you're
- [00:07:40.560]taking good care of yourself.
- [00:07:42.020]And so if you do struggle academically, we want to make sure we can have your goals of
- [00:07:50.380]recovering your academics cleared up as soon as possible.
- [00:07:53.720]So we'll work really closely with you
- [00:07:56.580]and we'll work closely with you on that.
- [00:07:58.980]Keep in mind, being a full-time student, signing up for 15, 16 credit hours a semester, and
- [00:08:06.000]then earning great grades, that's really what leads to on-time graduation.
- [00:08:09.720]Most of our degree programs, students will aim to complete in four years, and that is
- [00:08:16.620]really easy to do when you work closely with your academic advisor.
- [00:08:20.040]But keep in mind, if you choose to be here a little bit longer, that is fine.
- [00:08:26.560]It isn't impossible for a student to graduate a semester early, especially bringing in transfer work and things like
- [00:08:30.920]that.
- [00:08:31.160]But it's always great to be talking with your academic advisor about your goal for when
- [00:08:35.580]you see your graduation happening.
- [00:08:37.860]While we know you all can be successful here, we do have lots of folks that are committed
- [00:08:44.760]to your success and really care for you while you're a student here in the College of Education
- [00:08:49.380]and Human Sciences.
- [00:08:50.360]So here are some of those folks who are going to help you along the way.
- [00:08:53.620]Our faculty are really fantastic.
- [00:08:56.540]Our college, like I said earlier, is often referred to as the people's college.
- [00:09:00.300]Students will call us the College of Really Nice People.
- [00:09:02.880]You know, we're trying to make the world a better place by training people to be teachers
- [00:09:07.140]and health care providers and important roles within their communities.
- [00:09:11.000]So by nature of what our faculty teach and research, they're really great, nice, caring
- [00:09:16.360]people.
- [00:09:16.780]And you're going to find that in the classroom, too.
- [00:09:18.940]So if you're struggling, I know sometimes it's hard to ask for help or it might feel
- [00:09:23.060]a little intimidating, but I have to tell you, our faculty are always
- [00:09:26.520]so caring and concerned about our students.
- [00:09:28.700]I'm one of the people of a faculty call if they're concerned about a student.
- [00:09:32.240]And so trust me, they are thinking about you and they want to make sure you're well
- [00:09:37.500]and want to be part of your success.
- [00:09:39.680]In our college, everyone has an assigned academic advisor.
- [00:09:43.360]So generally, you're going to be with the same advisor the whole way through your degree
- [00:09:46.680]program, as long as you don't radically change your degree program.
- [00:09:49.720]It isn't impossible that we have an advisor leave from time to time, go off onto a new
- [00:09:55.020]role within the university or outside.
- [00:09:56.500]But we'll always make sure that you have someone who is there to work with you every
- [00:10:03.240]step of the way.
- [00:10:03.980]Our college also has what we call career coaches.
- [00:10:06.960]And so while you're just starting college and you think, gosh, I'm not ready to start
- [00:10:10.800]planning my career, it's actually not too soon to start working with our career coaches.
- [00:10:14.920]They can talk to you about shadowing opportunities, internships, part-time jobs on campus,
- [00:10:21.360]lots of different things.
- [00:10:22.940]And so they'll also be here as you get ready to apply
- [00:10:26.480]for professional school, graduate school, or for those first jobs right out of college.
- [00:10:32.280]The other person we have on our team to support students is our academic navigator.
- [00:10:36.480]Our academic navigator will reach out to primarily first-year students
- [00:10:41.100]to see how they are performing with their transition from high school to college.
- [00:10:47.140]They have access to some information about how students are progressing in classes.
- [00:10:52.220]And so if they see a student isn't progressing at the same level as other students,
- [00:10:56.460]it's not impossible that you might not hear from your academic navigator to say,
- [00:10:59.720]"Hey, looks like you might be struggling in this. How can we help you?"
- [00:11:02.960]In addition to having
- [00:11:04.780]having people there to support you. We're going to have lots of different activities along the way.
- [00:11:09.500]One thing you'll do in your first semester, even before classes start, we have an orientation class
- [00:11:15.360]that will teach you kind of how to be a student and how to manage the technology of being a student.
- [00:11:19.920]That's called Start Smart. So that'll be a class that actually starts online before you even come
- [00:11:25.640]to campus. We also will have some sessions for you during Big Red Welcome. That's that orientation
- [00:11:31.860]week before classes start. So there'll be a college session that you can pop in and see
- [00:11:36.340]our entire team. We're here for you that first week of class, and so if you are struggling
- [00:11:42.980]getting to a place on time or how your schedule was built, or you're in a class and you feel like
- [00:11:48.100]this feels familiar to something I might already have college credit for, great time to pop in and
- [00:11:52.800]talk with your advisor and make a change in that first week. So you can be successful in all the
- [00:11:57.340]classes that you're going to take that semester. We're also going to really encourage you,
- [00:12:01.840]in that first four weeks, you need to go to every class, be really attentive to when your
- [00:12:06.460]assignments are due. That first four weeks is going to be a really important foundation for
- [00:12:11.480]your academic success. The other thing in regards to your transition to college we always want
- [00:12:17.560]students to think about is your online presence. I know there's a lot in our society about social
- [00:12:22.800]media and, you know, your image and presence online. As you are getting ready to prepare for a career in
- [00:12:31.820]teaching or healthcare or entrepreneurship, it is important to know that your online presence is
- [00:12:38.900]being built and that there are future employers or people in the communities you might be moving
- [00:12:44.880]into who might be looking for learning more about you. And so to be really thoughtful about that
- [00:12:51.500]online presence that you're putting out there for others. As I mentioned earlier, one of those key
- [00:12:58.060]people to help you with your success here in the College of Education and
- [00:13:01.800]Human Sciences is going to be your academic advisor. So based on your major and your last
- [00:13:07.080]name, you'll be assigned an academic advisor. You're going to work with them every semester
- [00:13:11.960]to check in and share how your current classes are going, as well as plan for your classes for
- [00:13:18.520]the next semester and build that long range plan. You can see your advisor for things besides class
- [00:13:25.580]registration. Like I said, developing that long range plan when you want things to happen,
- [00:13:30.720]especially if you're thinking about
- [00:13:31.780]something like education abroad or when to time an internship, things like that.
- [00:13:37.780]Your advisor, you'll have access to their calendar so you can schedule an in-person or Zoom meeting
- [00:13:44.860]with them whenever it works for you. And then during some of our busier times when everyone's
- [00:13:49.820]trying to register, we'll have additional drop-in hours where you can just pop on in
- [00:13:53.920]to our waiting room and see your advisor as soon as they're available. Your degree program,
- [00:14:01.760]and your academic experience is really unique to you. So it's great to ask friends in the same
- [00:14:07.920]major or family members and people you might get to know about what their academic experience has
- [00:14:15.420]been. But keep in mind, your academic experience requirements are unique to you. So we'd always
- [00:14:21.560]encourage you to reach out to your advisor before adding a class, removing a class, things like that,
- [00:14:27.880]just so we can make sure that you're making a well-informed decision.
- [00:14:31.740]In our college, we have a huge commitment to education abroad. With our majors, you might
- [00:14:38.580]not think of education abroad within them, but we have great programs that often happen
- [00:14:44.680]over winter break, spring break, or at the beginning of summer. And in these pictures,
- [00:14:51.520]you are not only seeing students, but there's actually faculty and staff who are traveling
- [00:14:56.440]along with students to make sure that that experience to go abroad can be related not
- [00:15:01.720]only to you growing as a person, having these amazing experiences, but you also earning class
- [00:15:07.920]credit related to your specific degree. A number of our programs, students are earning scholarships
- [00:15:13.720]more from the college as well as the university. And so sometimes the education abroad experience
- [00:15:19.880]is a little more financially accessible than students and families might normally think.
- [00:15:24.420]We really encourage students to make campus your home. So whether if you're living on campus,
- [00:15:31.700]or you're commuting to campus, it can't be all work and no play, right? You have to find people
- [00:15:38.020]who you can build connections with, and have fun with, and study with, and go to as you have bumps
- [00:15:46.700]along the road, things like that. And so we definitely encourage you to find ways to get
- [00:15:50.940]involved. So here's some cute pics of some of our events that we've had this past year with
- [00:15:57.600]students just kind of having fun together, blowing off steam. And there'll be lots of these
- [00:16:01.680]opportunities within the college. There's great student organizations within the college where
- [00:16:05.700]you can meet students who are studying the same thing as you and really kind of build community
- [00:16:09.440]with them. But it's also just great to get involved in different activities, even outside
- [00:16:14.460]of the college here on campus. So some of you have maybe already signed up for classes for fall 25.
- [00:16:23.780]And if you haven't, I want to share with you kind of what to expect as you sign up for classes for
- [00:16:31.660]fall 2025. So you can't sign up for classes on your own as an incoming student. And so you will
- [00:16:39.920]sign up for your advising appointment through MyRed this one time. So you'll sign up for your
- [00:16:46.000]NSE advising appointment. That actual appointment, it can be in person or it can be online.
- [00:16:51.280]And it can happen before or after your new student enrollment orientation.
- [00:16:56.540]There will be some things you have to do before you can actually pick your advising appointment
- [00:17:01.640]day and time, and if that appointment's online or in person. And that would be things like an
- [00:17:07.200]advising inventory, math placement exam, and modern language exam. So everyone's going to
- [00:17:12.960]take the advising inventory. One thing about the advising inventory that's super important
- [00:17:17.100]is that is your tool to tell your academic advisor about any of the possible classes
- [00:17:23.100]that you might have college credit for. So if you have done dual credit with a community college
- [00:17:28.440]or university, even if you've taken classes already,
- [00:17:31.620]through Nebraska Now here at University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:17:33.980]or if you have earned scores from your AP tests,
- [00:17:38.360]or you're even waiting to see what your AP test scores are,
- [00:17:41.940]you'll put all that information on your advising inventory just so we make sure
- [00:17:45.840]that we understand any possible coursework that you have.
- [00:17:49.160]The math placement exam, there is a great pre-test,
- [00:17:53.260]I always encourage students to read up on how to take the math placement exam before you take it.
- [00:17:58.480]The goal of that test, though, is to get you in
- [00:18:01.600]the right math class as you start.
- [00:18:04.060]Some of your majors might not require the math related to the math placement exam for your degree.
- [00:18:10.760]However, you could be in a science course that does have a math placement exam score connected to it.
- [00:18:17.540]So it's important for all students in our college to take that test.
- [00:18:20.940]The modern language exam, this is optional in our college.
- [00:18:24.160]And so if you're going to be in a major where you want to learn how to teach a language, definitely take the modern language exam.
- [00:18:30.140]If you want to continue,
- [00:18:31.580]or even start a language here at the university, then again, feel free to take that modern language exam.
- [00:18:38.440]And like I said, your appointment, it can be by Zoom or in person.
- [00:18:43.760]If you're on Zoom, we really encourage that you're going to need to be on a computer, not a phone,
- [00:18:48.660]because you as a student will be actually signing up for your classes during your advising appointment.
- [00:18:53.000]And you need to have really good Internet while you're doing that.
- [00:18:56.000]Or you can select to come in campus, on campus and into our offices.
- [00:19:01.560]105 Henzlik Hall and have that in-person advising session.
- [00:19:05.280]The advising session and the decision on which classes will be the best fit classes for you in your first semester
- [00:19:12.440]is really a conversation between the student and the advisor,
- [00:19:15.300]but parents are welcome to be part of that first advising session.
- [00:19:18.940]If you still want to learn more about your student's degree program,
- [00:19:22.120]we definitely welcome you into those spaces as well.
- [00:19:25.120]So some next steps as you get closer.
- [00:19:31.540]To the end of summer and the academic year starting,
- [00:19:35.400]once you have signed up for classes,
- [00:19:37.300]you will have access to your Huskers email account.
- [00:19:40.500]And we'd really encourage you to check that on a weekly basis.
- [00:19:43.940]If there was some reason we needed to contact you
- [00:19:47.540]or something changed with your class schedule,
- [00:19:49.160]that Huskers email is the one that we use.
- [00:19:52.080]When you have your class schedule set with your academic advisor,
- [00:19:57.600]it is up to you if you want to make a change for anything,
- [00:20:01.520]with fall enrollment, if you want to switch a class around.
- [00:20:03.960]You definitely can do that because you're a fully enrolled student at that time.
- [00:20:08.760]I would really encourage you, though,
- [00:20:10.800]if you're going to make a change to reach out to your advisor
- [00:20:13.780]to make that change with them
- [00:20:15.920]or notify them what change you made after you made a change.
- [00:20:19.960]Sometimes it could be something as simple as,
- [00:20:23.620]I was signed up for English 150,
- [00:20:25.600]but my roommate, I found out they're in English 170,
- [00:20:29.080]and so we want to be in the same English.
- [00:20:31.500]And those English classes are actually hitting different requirements based on majors.
- [00:20:36.060]And so sometimes you could might inadvertently make a change,
- [00:20:41.240]not realizing how it might impact you.
- [00:20:43.980]So ultimately your choice,
- [00:20:45.380]but we always encourage you to reach out to your advisor about any of those changes.
- [00:20:48.300]As I mentioned earlier,
- [00:20:50.860]and one of the things we do to support you as you come to the university,
- [00:20:53.780]we will have an online orientation class that you take,
- [00:20:56.400]and it will open up August 1st.
- [00:20:59.540]It does not have to be completed August 1st,
- [00:21:01.480]most students will get components of it done before they come to campus,
- [00:21:05.160]but there will be some components that they get done once they are here,
- [00:21:08.520]and so there'll be messaging that comes out to students in late July about that.
- [00:21:12.420]And then the first day of classes is Monday, August 25th.
- [00:21:16.840]We know it'll be a really great first week of classes,
- [00:21:19.200]and we are here and advising for you that week,
- [00:21:24.580]just kind of on a drop-in basis for anything students might need help with.
- [00:21:28.520]So as we wrap this up, I just want to share with you
- [00:21:31.460]my contact information.
- [00:21:32.680]There is my email and my phone number,
- [00:21:36.300]and you're welcome to give a call to me directly
- [00:21:38.740]or to your academic advisor if you have any questions
- [00:21:43.100]about coming and joining us
- [00:21:47.280]in the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:21:49.180]this next academic year.
- [00:21:51.620]So we're so excited for you to be here
- [00:21:54.380]and to join the Husker community we are all part of.
- [00:22:01.440]Thank you.
