- [00:00:00.180]Coming up on "AI in the Classroom," OpenAI Academy.
- [00:00:04.013](upbeat music)
- [00:00:09.420]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin,
- [00:00:11.070]and today I would like to talk about OpenAI Academy.
- [00:00:14.670]OpenAI Academy emerged in really recent weeks
- [00:00:19.590]and what they've done is they've taken a series
- [00:00:23.100]of their videos and trainings
- [00:00:26.460]and put them together in what they call an academy.
- [00:00:29.070]So the first thing to know about this
- [00:00:30.690]is this is completely free,
- [00:00:32.310]so you do have to register,
- [00:00:33.990]but once you register,
- [00:00:35.370]you have access to all of the videos
- [00:00:37.380]and all of the resources for free.
- [00:00:39.690]Really important to know.
- [00:00:41.010]I registered with my Gmail account,
- [00:00:42.930]just making sure it's separate
- [00:00:44.340]from my professional accounts.
- [00:00:45.690]I don't yet know what they do with that data,
- [00:00:48.420]so that's something to think about.
- [00:00:50.040]And what you can immediately see in the academy
- [00:00:52.350]is that they have a collection of things
- [00:00:55.020]and they have two kinds of things.
- [00:00:56.580]They have recordings of old trainings that they've done.
- [00:00:59.430]So there's a collection, for example,
- [00:01:01.110]you can look at the Intro to AI for K-12 Educators,
- [00:01:05.190]but you also have events that keep happening
- [00:01:08.970]and you can register for those events
- [00:01:10.680]and then you can consume them live.
- [00:01:13.050]Why do I love Live events?
- [00:01:14.670]Because often you can do some questions and answer
- [00:01:17.640]and you get the excitement of something in real time,
- [00:01:20.880]but most of the time,
- [00:01:22.560]I don't have time during my day for one more thing.
- [00:01:25.800]So consuming the videos
- [00:01:27.780]when I have short amounts of time in my day
- [00:01:31.140]actually makes a lot of sense for me.
- [00:01:32.880]And I'm thinking especially of teachers
- [00:01:34.890]when we're working with our kids all day,
- [00:01:36.960]so we don't necessarily have time.
- [00:01:38.580]If you do want to explore what it does,
- [00:01:40.710]using those prerecorded things is helpful.
- [00:01:44.130]I love the fact that it's got the dates
- [00:01:46.080]because when you do have the dates,
- [00:01:47.640]you know how up to date it is.
- [00:01:49.380]We don't want to video from a year ago,
- [00:01:51.180]but because ChatGPT from a year ago
- [00:01:53.340]is not ChatGPT from two weeks ago, so that's great.
- [00:01:57.600]The videos, curiously as I was trying them out,
- [00:02:01.170]the videos have kind of two kinds of videos.
- [00:02:06.420]Some videos are showing up
- [00:02:10.500]as the live event
- [00:02:12.630]and you cannot actually
- [00:02:16.860]use any speed except the original speed
- [00:02:19.350]while others actually have that widget
- [00:02:22.290]that allows you to say,
- [00:02:23.257]"I would like to watch this in twice the speed."
- [00:02:27.750]And that is really, really helpful
- [00:02:30.060]because sometimes
- [00:02:33.450]there are lots of things we're not interested in.
- [00:02:35.730]We're interested in something specific,
- [00:02:37.530]so the being able to fast forward,
- [00:02:39.630]being able to play with the speed
- [00:02:41.790]are really features that I'm looking for in training
- [00:02:45.090]when I know what I want to see,
- [00:02:47.250]but it's going to take a little bit of time.
- [00:02:51.480]Let's, for example, look at
- [00:02:55.740]ChatGPT for Academic Success.
- [00:02:58.020]And so you can see that most of what you're going to see,
- [00:03:02.220]which is good for training,
- [00:03:03.720]is the actual ChatGPT window, much like we do.
- [00:03:06.990]So maybe they copied from us,
- [00:03:09.120]but really when I think about this,
- [00:03:12.420]this is the perfect way
- [00:03:13.380]because you see how they're doing the work
- [00:03:15.840]that they're doing
- [00:03:16.710]and then you've got the person in the corner.
- [00:03:18.720]This is very familiar to anybody who's been taking webinars
- [00:03:21.660]anytime in the last five years or so.
- [00:03:24.090]This is very common
- [00:03:26.460]and it does allow us to get a sense of what's going on.
- [00:03:31.020]But again, you can see that it is really,
- [00:03:35.100]you can jump, there are chapters.
- [00:03:36.750]So they do everything
- [00:03:37.800]that we know to do right now with video.
- [00:03:40.890]Again, using chapters,
- [00:03:42.600]being able to actually look at the chapters
- [00:03:45.660]and say, "I'm really interested in deep research reports,
- [00:03:48.510]so I'm going to jump there,"
- [00:03:50.010]and those kind of things.
- [00:03:51.420]So this is right now what's in the OpenAI Academy.
- [00:03:56.820]And really what I'd love for them to do
- [00:03:59.910]as they're developing their products
- [00:04:01.620]is to develop a few worksheets, cheat sheets,
- [00:04:05.520]that actually give you kind of the highlights from that
- [00:04:09.210]that you can follow.
- [00:04:10.290]You can print out or you can just have digitally as a PDF
- [00:04:13.890]that you can consult with
- [00:04:15.360]without going back to the video every time.
- [00:04:17.400]So that those are the kind of tools that I think about
- [00:04:20.230]as an educator,
- [00:04:21.750]and it's very clear
- [00:04:22.680]that they are not truly educators in that sense.
- [00:04:25.950]They have some tools
- [00:04:27.450]and obviously they are conducting all of these webinars
- [00:04:30.060]because it increases usage,
- [00:04:31.950]but there's another layer of educational tools
- [00:04:36.450]that I would love to see emerge
- [00:04:38.310]within this umbrella of OpenAI Academy.
- [00:04:41.010]That being said, of course,
- [00:04:42.540]I love the fact that these are available for free
- [00:04:46.800]from the company that is really investing
- [00:04:49.080]in making the product accessible.
- [00:04:51.000]I did wanna add one more thing about OpenAI,
- [00:04:53.367]and that is OpenAI right now offers
- [00:04:56.190]a product for K-12 education
- [00:04:58.800]that does protect personal data,
- [00:05:02.970]keeps the data locally,
- [00:05:05.280]and really has solutions
- [00:05:08.280]that if schools want to take OpenAI for a spin,
- [00:05:13.080]for an educational spin,
- [00:05:14.820]see how students are using it,
- [00:05:16.740]create boundaries around that and everything,
- [00:05:19.110]that is available.
- [00:05:20.370]And I really suggest, if you're interested,
- [00:05:22.650]especially starting to think about what's going to happen
- [00:05:24.960]with AI next during the next school year,
- [00:05:27.540]taking a look at what products are out there
- [00:05:29.670]is a great opportunity.
- [00:05:32.280]All right, today we talked about OpenAI Academy
- [00:05:35.190]and then we'll see you next time.
- [00:05:36.852](upbeat music)
