- [00:00:38.120]just wanted to say good morning. Welcome. We're on the session three here and looking forward to
- [00:00:43.920]the dialogue between that we have between NRCS and UNL extension educators. But, you know,
- [00:00:50.820]just to set the stage again, I'm excited that we have this agreement. You know, the overall purpose
- [00:00:56.540]of the webinar series is to increase our capacity to promote and plan cover crops in Nebraska.
- [00:01:04.240]As a state, we are invested in the science of soil health and the outreach that's needed
- [00:01:11.400]to have conversations with producers about soil health and how it fits into their management
- [00:01:16.780]systems. So we also, like I mentioned, we want to create this space for UNL extension educators to
- [00:01:23.380]meet with their NRCS counterparts.
- [00:01:26.260]Across the state and discuss the challenges and successes of soil health practices in their
- [00:01:32.040]regions, specific to their regions. And that's it. That's exciting to be able to do that.
- [00:01:36.740]And recognizing that we, the success that we've had with these webinars,
- [00:01:41.480]we're already strategizing to offer more webinars to further empower our staffs.

- [00:06:39.820]that has been on my mind to kind of put together in a presentation.
- [00:06:43.960]So I was glad to have this opportunity because it is really a common question about cover crops.
- [00:06:49.280]How do they pay?
- [00:06:50.500]This is, you know, we really built this series around with water, with yield,
- [00:06:55.180]you know, these really common questions that we hear to just try to empower people with resources and some knowledge.
- [00:07:00.720]So what does the research tell us?
- [00:07:02.660]What are some reports and information here about how cover crops can return on investment?
- [00:07:06.820]So what I want to actually start with is just a quick refresh of some of the summaries that we have from our first two sessions for yield and water.
- [00:07:14.920]And then I'm going to talk a little bit about what partial budgeting is and give you some resources to utilize if they would be helpful.
- [00:07:25.100]And then I've got some nice research and some different reports from publications about this question of cover crops pay and it is, it is a little complicated right so I want to make the caveat to I'm an agronomist, and I'm not trained in all the methods of economics
- [00:07:38.760]but I think that what you can see from the reports is a sense of the dollars and cents and the additions and subtractions and the categories that we include that is does not require a lot of necessarily fancy methods or tools it's really just like keeping track
- [00:07:55.020]and and how big do we make our circle and what our budget includes so I'm going to show you some research evidence reports there and then I've got a summary for you and then we'll move into our breakout room so we should be doing that in about 30 to 35 minutes so starting with our first two sessions so what did we talk about in October to start so Vash put together a really nice presentation that talked some of the really specific processes the ways that cover crops can impact cash crop yields but one of the components of this was the fact that
- [00:08:24.940]across a range of scales of research so if we look at work that's been done on farms if we look
- [00:08:30.200]at work that's been done on experimentation smaller plots if we look at farmer surveys
- [00:08:35.700]we see a general trend that demonstrates that when we think about different crops
- [00:08:42.320]cover different cover crop species that we actually see kind of neutral cover crop
- [00:08:49.480]effects so we sometimes hear about the negative effects but really in totality we look
- [00:08:54.860]at all the research the effects kind of overall are fairly neutral of course there's a lot
- [00:08:59.080]of caveats in here and I'll go into some more detail so there's been some good work
- [00:09:04.180]that has synthesized the impact of cover crops on corn yields when you follow corn with a
- [00:09:10.580]legume species or a mixture usually that leads to an increase in yields grass species especially
- [00:09:18.180]when terminated later before corn can lead to slight reductions in yields especially
- [00:09:24.780]in drier years we know that's not uncommon for us with the variability we have in rainfall
- [00:09:30.280]and I would say the same principles generally apply for wheat this is studied a bit less
- [00:09:36.020]I would say the same probably for soybean it's been studied a bit less than lots of people want
- [00:09:41.500]to think about what's been the impact of management practices on on corn yields but
- [00:09:46.660]I do feel that from what exists with soybean that we generally cover crops can see a positive
- [00:09:51.900]effect and a lot of that is just the species effect of
- [00:09:54.700]the cereal rye cover crop before soybean seems to be less detrimental as a whole than on
- [00:10:01.140]corn so I would say that kind of for wheat and soybean a little bit less studied but
- [00:10:04.840]these are some general principles from from the work and that our sense really is this
- [00:10:10.800]that once folks can get past the learning curve farmers and researchers and not to say
- [00:10:14.940]that we are perfect in our executions of of cover crop management that really those negative
- [00:10:21.300]yield effects can be limited so the management is really important in getting through that
- [00:10:24.620]learning curve and i'll probably say it's about three more times today but i do really
- [00:10:27.800]feel the cost share opportunities that nrcs can offer is a really valuable tool from an
- [00:10:33.080]economic standpoint to get folks through that learning curve figuring out how cover crops
- [00:10:37.300]can pay on their own operations so i'm not going to go into detail on this slide i just
- [00:10:43.120]want to show you that this is a a little summary of some of the research reports we talked
- [00:10:47.880]about i understand that on your portal you've organized some of the papers that we've shared
- [00:10:52.540]here so so you should have
- [00:10:54.540]these as a resource so these are all experiments with cover crops and and yield impacts in
- [00:11:00.860]the state of nebraska okay and so that was october in november we moved into one of my
- [00:11:09.900]favorite topics which is cover crop impacts on water which again another very common thing that
- [00:11:14.300]comes up that folks can be hesitant about using cover crops because they're worried about the
- [00:11:18.860]impact of uh water use especially that they will that will use too much water ahead of
- [00:11:24.460]cash crop planting or for their cash crop growing season and it does turn out of course
- [00:11:29.660]cover crops impact water right uh they can impact all elements of the water cycle so
- [00:11:34.940]that's how i started my presentation if you had the opportunity to join or the opportunity to
- [00:11:38.700]watch later if we think about the whole aspects of the water cycle what's happening in the soil
- [00:11:43.980]what's happening with how much evaporation could be reduced or infiltration can be improved
- [00:11:50.780]so this does to some extent complicate what the effect is
- [00:11:54.380]of a cover crop on on water and then crop yields and there's a lot of positives here some of the
- [00:12:00.460]things i've already mentioned that we see a lot of evidence something that researchers seem to love
- [00:12:05.900]to study there's a lot of data out there about how cover crops can impact things like runoff
- [00:12:09.900]infiltration water storage elements of soil hydrology with the potential to improve water
- [00:12:15.020]storage so these seem to really point to a positive aspect of cover crop effects
- [00:12:21.100]in terms of water and that research just
- [00:12:24.300]generally holds true so that's like bigger picture and when we zoom into Nebraska there's
- [00:12:27.560]obviously kind of less work than than what exists globally so we do see that cover crops can
- [00:12:32.520]increase infiltration we've seen that on farms and work that we did that was supported by another
- [00:12:37.140]NRCS agreement that we've we've talked with this group about in the past one issue though is these
- [00:12:43.500]drier years that we can see some declines following a cover crop in cash crops and
- [00:12:50.320]drier years now is that directly effect of water could it be other elements like
- [00:12:54.220]we talked about in the first video if you think about just the biophysics of what's happening
- [00:12:58.220]out in the environment right it could that be contributing to
- [00:13:01.740]nitrogen immobilization could that be about pests or other things it could be it could be about
- [00:13:08.460]water right so that's kind of how I think about there's all these categories of ways that cover
- [00:13:11.820]crops could impact cash crop yields but we do see this greater effect in some dry years in
- [00:13:18.220]terms of negative cash crop yield effects so I would say too just from the work that we
- [00:13:24.140]presented on that webinar that the bigger risks are in drier years with later termination
- [00:13:29.660]a reminder about the importance of management but I would also add a positive here too that
- [00:13:36.860]water use in a wetter spring or a wetter season could be a real benefit right so this fall was a
- [00:13:43.580]bit unusual we did not have a lot of rain really from late summer until almost November but once we
- [00:13:48.540]got to November it was still warm and we did get several rain events right where having that soil cover
- [00:13:54.060]having those seeds in the ground to really take off at that point would be beneficial so
- [00:13:58.220]so it's more complicated than just the cover crop using water I hope that's something you would take
- [00:14:03.480]from from this session that we had in November but there can be positives and then you know some
- [00:14:09.260]challenges when we have drier seasons or potentially later terminated cover crops and again here is
- [00:14:16.420]just a bit of a summary from the research that we presented in the webinar in November so we have
- [00:14:23.980]tried to again organize those resources for you and I'm not going to go through all of them but
- [00:14:28.660]again this is just hitting the finer points that I just emphasized with respect to some of the
- [00:14:34.680]positives or more complex story of cover crops and water okay so that's my summary of our first
- [00:14:45.440]two webinars and now I want to get into kind of the main event for the day which is thinking about
- [00:14:52.360]cover crops return on investment
- [00:14:53.900]and the first place I wanted to start just something that I talk about with my 200 level
- [00:14:58.540]students something that we talk about with our cover crop course which is this idea of what are
- [00:15:04.020]the tools that we can use to understand the effects that cover crops can have on a budget
- [00:15:11.660]right so one thing is a partial budget partial budget analysis so partial budget analysis
- [00:15:16.580]is exactly what it sounds like right it is an estimate of partial costs
- [00:15:23.820]and there's a lot that can go into a complete budget so I'll get into a complete budget next
- [00:15:29.000]I have a tool to help with that but when we think about a partial budget it's an estimate of our
- [00:15:33.100]partial costs and I really love this diagram because I think it does a really nice job summarizing
- [00:15:38.460]the costs and the potential revenue for both having additions and subtractions being specific
- [00:15:46.700]to cover crops so essentially all the work that I'm going to talk about for the rest of my presentation is related
- [00:15:53.740]to this partial budget approach and so as I'll show you there's many ways that reports and
- [00:15:59.180]research try to organize a partial budget so I'm showing you these categories here that I'm going
- [00:16:04.240]to come back to a number of times so the the positives here for costs which means like adding
- [00:16:10.580]costs I shouldn't say positive just say additions and subtractions so the additions of costs could
- [00:16:14.840]be things like seed planting extra inputs the reductions in costs could be if you are improving
- [00:16:23.660]nitrogen reducing tillage lowering herbicide use right so we can think about how costs could be
- [00:16:29.580]added or subtracted we think about revenue we could think about things like higher yields or
- [00:16:35.260]getting money from from grazing from a cover crop or cost share programs right if we think about
- [00:16:41.360]declines in revenue we might think about some negative impact on on cash crop yield so it's
- [00:16:46.580]just a way for us to organize and estimate partial costs through partial budget analysis and
- [00:16:53.580]I also want to point to a really great resource to help us kind of organize in something that you
- [00:16:58.780]might want to refer to which is the Nebraska crop budget platform which is a a platform for lack of
- [00:17:06.980]a better way to describe it it's really incredible if you are unsure of costs so this is developed
- [00:17:12.060]over the year by ag economists and agronomists and extension they put this really detailed
- [00:17:17.700]pdf of many many many slides excel document of many many many worksheets that
- [00:17:23.500]include some of the following things so i'm just showing you a snapshot of what this resource
- [00:17:27.980]includes a table of contents so they include a detailed budget you could think about it as
- [00:17:34.940]partial or or much more complete than the partial budget that i just showed in that diagram so
- [00:17:40.880]what this resource includes are different crops different environments different locations of
- [00:17:49.340]nebraska different really scenarios so to speak and what you can do is
- [00:17:53.420]pick one to get started with that might most closely resemble your environment or the
- [00:17:58.780]environment of someone that you want to help and so when i say if you're unsure of cost
- [00:18:01.840]i have found it kind of difficult to come up with what are estimates of costs for well seed for
- [00:18:08.760]cover crops is maybe not as complicated if you're looking at websites for seed but other things like
- [00:18:13.060]herbicides and you know what are common rates that people might use it's all embedded in the
- [00:18:18.820]worksheet so when you dig down into the spreadsheets in more detail i'm just showing you a
- [00:18:23.340]quick snapshot here and you can just look at that website or google unl crop budgets and play around
- [00:18:27.960]with this you can see a lot of detail and again what i might consider a more complete budget
- [00:18:32.460]because it's not just about materials and inputs right it's which is what you see kind of in the
- [00:18:38.640]middle part of the screen here it's also about field operations and equipment so that's what
- [00:18:43.300]you see at the top so you see those field operations there are numbered and those numbers correspond so
- [00:18:48.540]you see the numbers right here for field operations and they correspond to different inputs
- [00:18:53.260]so different products that people would use but it also includes at the bottom overhead costs like
- [00:18:59.460]taxes right so they do a nice job of doing an estimate of what this is a dry land environment
- [00:19:06.060]in eastern Nebraska no-till corn soybean rotation they're estimating 195 bushel yield
- [00:19:11.900]and so if these were all your costs what would that come out to is your cash cost which is just
- [00:19:16.840]everything except for ownership operating and your cost of production per bushel which
- [00:19:23.180]is such an important number to have a sense of and so these are just great resources to
- [00:19:29.260]as I've noted here at the bottom of the slide compare changes in management if you only
- [00:19:33.240]want to consider one element of your budget be it a more partial budget which is exactly
- [00:19:37.120]what we think about with my agronomy students that we might think about especially the materials
- [00:19:42.820]and services you know how does using more or less of a fertilizer herbicide or fungicide
- [00:19:47.780]how much does that impact yield how much does that impact our cost of production this budget
- [00:19:53.100]really trying to go beyond that encompassing your field operations overhead costs and
- [00:19:59.120]I just as I was putting this together I just keep thinking about you know like what's the
- [00:20:03.080]circle that we draw around our budget right it's hard to get some numbers for the whole
- [00:20:07.120]thing you don't have to think about the whole thing necessarily the reports and research
- [00:20:12.340]I'm sharing with you today they all draw the circle in different ways but this is a nice
- [00:20:18.180]resource to help you think about you know what might be included what are common rates
- [00:20:23.020]and costs they do this every year it's just again a great resource and then I did you
- [00:20:29.120]know with equipment just one thing that I came across in preparing for today I found
- [00:20:34.020]a nice resource written by some extension folks at the University of Missouri and we'll
- [00:20:39.120]include this in our resources for everyone which is you know this question of how do
- [00:20:42.860]we estimate or understand what are the equipment needs and costs for cover crops at least for
- [00:20:47.140]me that can be sometimes a bit of a challenge and so this is just a really nice guide it
- [00:20:51.680]talks about what would be a
- [00:20:52.940]especially with respect to planting equipment needs and they discuss some of the pros and
- [00:20:58.720]cons of different equipment they also include some ideas about economics they have ideas
- [00:21:05.580]for you know modifying equipment or sharing equipment so it's just a nice resource again
- [00:21:10.520]if you're thinking about how you might give someone some advice or just even educate yourself
- [00:21:15.300]about what's a what are some approaches that people might use I thought this was a great
- [00:21:18.900]equipment related resource that did include some economics.
- [00:21:22.860]And then when we just think about you know the kind of direct costs associated with
- [00:21:29.800]what does it take to grow a cover crop we have to at a minimum account for seed planting and
- [00:21:37.260]termination right there's probably a lot of other things we might want to consider I'm just showing
- [00:21:41.400]you here some ranges from the one of the more recent SARE CTIC surveys so they survey farmers
- [00:21:48.900]who are working with cover crops they've got some great information over the years in their survey
- [00:21:52.780]but this is one about cost of seeding cover crops you can see there's always a range that's one thing
- [00:21:59.200]that makes this tricky to consider how do we come up with these costs I do really like to think
- [00:22:05.120]about ranges as medians and averages can be valuable but ranges are really valuable too
- [00:22:09.180]so cost of seed $10 to $50 seeding costs you can see what termination costs can be they might have
- [00:22:17.320]a zero there especially if someone is not doing anything additional if they're already planting an herbicide
- [00:22:22.700]pass that would terminate the cover crop or be kind of a burn down pre-season so that would be a zero
- [00:22:29.500]so really depends on how people are managing right and I've also noted some other considerations here
- [00:22:35.180]about you know is equipment needing to be custom hired is the equipment already owned
- [00:22:40.860]you know seeding rates can be a great way to think about keeping
- [00:22:45.020]costs reasonable for cover crops. If you are, you know, thinking about what your goals are,
- [00:22:50.080]you may be able to seed less. If you are planting earlier, if you are drilling, you might have lower
- [00:22:56.680]seeding rates. So costs, species, goals, planting method, all are going to come into play when
- [00:23:02.360]you're thinking about what are the direct costs for seeding, planting, terminating cover crops.
- [00:23:09.800]So this is just a range. There are other resources that are out there. I think this is a nice starting
- [00:23:14.120]point. And I know Nathan has had some resources as well. So this is not including even cost share,
- [00:23:18.900]but I imagine many of you are pretty familiar with what the cost share rates would be.
- [00:23:23.440]And they do vary from year to year, as you all know far better than I do. But really some of
- [00:23:30.560]those costs that you have for cost share, you can see here how they would easily be able to offset
- [00:23:35.840]most or all of these initial and direct costs for getting started with cover crops.
- [00:23:42.020]Okay, so that's what I wanted to share. We're just thinking about, you know, how do we approach
- [00:23:50.400]this question? What are tools we can use? And what are some of the categories or elements that
- [00:23:56.460]we want to include with respect to direct costs? I want to move next to what are some of the things
- [00:24:04.040]that have been done to try to understand this question of what are cover crop returns on
- [00:24:09.680]investment? And
- [00:24:11.600]I thought I might start with something that my team and I did that is not an official publication.
- [00:24:16.740]I put this little snapshot here that I'm showing you together for a field day that I participated
- [00:24:22.000]in in 2021. So again, I'm approaching this question as an agronomist who finds it important
- [00:24:29.320]to really think about numbers. And again, not an economist, I always feel there's a little bit of
- [00:24:34.800]consternation or frustration or discussion around how would we put numbers to the things that we
- [00:24:39.920]find valuable?
- [00:24:41.180]In the soil, they can be really hard to quantify or budget for. But what my team and I did, and
- [00:24:49.540]actually just, you know, a side note of, you know, how our work evolves. We had a visiting scholar
- [00:24:54.240]working with us in 2020. She arrived in February. And of course we remember what happened in March
- [00:24:59.980]of 2020, right? So we had lots of lab and field projects planned for her and we ended up having
- [00:25:04.840]to pivot her work to be more remote. And so she helped with this project. And I just, we wanted
- [00:25:10.760]to kind of build a bit of just a template of what are some of the ways that cover crops can pay.
- [00:25:18.000]And we started by just doing a search of what reports are out there, what news stories are
- [00:25:24.100]out there, what have people talked about with respect to what are the categories that are
- [00:25:29.400]included in different aspects of this question, and then what are some of the ranges of the costs.
- [00:25:35.780]And so here's what we did. We just wanted to create, again, a spreadsheet that,
- [00:25:40.540]would think about some of these costs and then returns on investments. And we had a number of
- [00:25:45.840]reports in our mind that we had already been familiar with. And then Damian, our visiting
- [00:25:50.960]scholar at that time, she did a keyword search with Google Scholar that included some of the
- [00:25:54.740]words I'm showing you here, just to get a sense of what is out there, try to summarize all this.
- [00:26:00.540]Again, this was a couple of years back now, but what is interesting as I was building this
- [00:26:05.300]presentation, I see that a lot of the categories and ranges are pretty similar to what we
- [00:26:10.320]were able to find a few years ago.
- [00:26:11.800]Of course, costs change, costs have gone up for a lot of things, but I still think that
- [00:26:18.540]categories and the ranges are really valuable.
- [00:26:23.400]We put together for changes in costs, so if you have more or less expenses, we found lots
- [00:26:29.400]of reports that talked about changes in field operations, soil health-related benefits,
- [00:26:34.200]as well as changes to inputs.
- [00:26:37.380]And then when we talked about revenue, and this is very similar
- [00:26:40.100]to what we found in other reports, people talk about a couple categories.
- [00:26:43.300]They talk about the value that can result from improving cash crop yields, savings or
- [00:26:50.540]extra revenue from grazing, or a cost share program.
- [00:26:54.060]So there's probably a lot of ways we could think about, you know, costs, revenue.
- [00:26:58.560]You know, here we're thinking about if you're reducing inputs, we're putting that as a lesser
- [00:27:02.120]cost rate.
- [00:27:03.120]So these are some of the categories and the ranges, and there's a lot of information in
- [00:27:06.660]this table.
- [00:27:07.660]We're going to share our slides with you so you can see the
- [00:27:09.880]sources which, again, include a lot more specifics beyond what I had on that last slide.
- [00:27:14.800]And so you can see those categories I just talked about, the changes in field operations,
- [00:27:18.660]the soil health benefits, changes in inputs.
- [00:27:22.820]And the first category, these changes in field operations, just to go into a little bit of
- [00:27:30.160]detail here, they often came from, in the reports that we found, reduced tillage when
- [00:27:36.860]shifting to cover cropping.
- [00:27:39.660]So both benefits are ones that we, conservation-oriented folks in agronomy, always want to see numbers
- [00:27:46.680]put to, but they can be difficult to monetize.
- [00:27:48.720]So I think it's interesting here, if you look at the SARE report that I'm going to
- [00:27:53.600]get to in just a minute, they put a number against what it would cost to reduce tillage
- [00:28:00.080]because your cover crop had reduced compaction.
- [00:28:02.020]I think that's a really interesting example.
- [00:28:03.560]So all of these resources have a lot more detail about how they came up with the
- [00:28:09.440]numbers.
- [00:28:10.140]And then we think about the changes to inputs.
- [00:28:11.960]You can see nitrogen credits from cover crops.
- [00:28:14.860]It's not even something I am dedicating a lot of time to today, but we can obviously
- [00:28:19.220]think about a legume cover crop giving a nitrogen benefit.
- [00:28:21.880]There's some resources out there to come up with estimates.
- [00:28:24.180]If people are doing less fertilizer, for example, some farmers that I interact with talk about
- [00:28:31.980]the benefits they've seen, especially for phosphorus, or maybe even reducing the
- [00:28:39.220]reducing, here's one that's we're talking about reducing treated soybeans.
- [00:28:43.200]So a lot of ways in this changes to inputs.
- [00:28:45.460]I like these examples.
- [00:28:46.560]I think they're valuable.
- [00:28:47.500]Reducing field passes.
- [00:28:48.780]Yeah, the way I kind of think about this, and when I think about some of the farmers
- [00:28:54.440]that I interact with who are really, you know, monetizing cover crops well, it's not just
- [00:28:59.580]about, you know, things like how much nitrogen can we credit from a legume, but it really
- [00:29:05.300]feels to me like these are things that accrue with management.
- [00:29:09.000]And carefully executed management, as well as tracking of costs.
- [00:29:13.140]I think it's a really important point that these are things that are possible, but they
- [00:29:17.100]do accrue with the learning curve, with the, again, carefully executed management and tracking
- [00:29:23.560]of costs.
- [00:29:24.380]This is what I've seen to be the most successful.
- [00:29:26.280]So this is the revenue side of things from the report that we organized, just expanding
- [00:29:33.240]a little bit on some of those categories that we identified, which included grazing, programs,
- [00:29:38.780]the cost share programs, as well as the yield effects.
- [00:29:43.540]So I do want to note really briefly here too, we tried to also note the period that people
- [00:29:49.220]were using cover crops when we did this, because I do think it's not always like extremely
- [00:29:53.440]explicit in all these reports, but that point I made before about the accrual of benefits
- [00:29:59.640]coming from careful management tracking of expenses, you know, this last line here, this
- [00:30:04.660]report I'm going to get into in just a bit.
- [00:30:08.560]This is an average of nine years.
- [00:30:09.800]He did some interviews with Iowa farmers.
- [00:30:11.540]So these are folks who had a lot of experience with cover crops, right?
- [00:30:14.500]So this increase in cash crop yield, not necessarily accruing in the first year.
- [00:30:19.720]So that's what we try to do.
- [00:30:22.340]And I want to point you to a couple more resources here that are highlighting, again, what are
- [00:30:29.740]some of the ranges?
- [00:30:30.320]What are some of the ways that cover crops can pay?
- [00:30:32.480]So this was a really great SARE bulletin that I'm referring to here about cover crop
- [00:30:36.820]economics.
- [00:30:37.360]It's put together a few years.
- [00:30:38.540]Now, I wouldn't necessarily describe this exactly like a partial budget, but what they
- [00:30:42.960]did was to highlight some of these scenarios or situations where the return on investment
- [00:30:47.960]can be faster.
- [00:30:48.660]So you can see the seven that they list here.
- [00:30:50.580]Some of them were encompassed in the table that I already shared because we didn't include
- [00:30:55.260]this report in our assessment.
- [00:30:57.380]So they talk about things like herbicide resistant weeds being an issue, the soil compaction
- [00:31:02.100]issue, an example, cover crops coinciding to no-till.
- [00:31:08.520]Easing the transition to no-till, incentive payments, et cetera.
- [00:31:11.980]So some examples where cover crops can pay more quickly.
- [00:31:15.940]And in the report, they have kind of a similar table that tried to summarize some of those
- [00:31:21.820]scenarios in terms of just what are opportunities that cover crops can pay.
- [00:31:25.900]I do really like, and you'll notice I'm finding the more you look at reports like this, the
- [00:31:30.920]more they have lots and lots of asterisks and footnotes describing what were some of
- [00:31:35.920]the assumptions that were used, right?
- [00:31:38.500]Uh, let's just look at the first few lines of one of the tables that I've zoomed into
- [00:31:43.500]here.
- [00:31:43.860]I just try to make a little bit larger what some of those assumptions were.
- [00:31:47.340]Again, many assumptions that go into building these budgets because situations can vary
- [00:31:52.680]a lot, but I did really like these in terms of the level of specificity, right?
- [00:31:56.760]So for the fertilizer savings here, they're showing, you know, no savings in the first
- [00:32:01.440]year, some savings in the third year and more savings in the fifth year.
- [00:32:05.300]And here they talk about this example that I just had mentioned about.
- [00:32:08.480]They talk about phosphorus savings, and I've seen that again from hearing that from farmers
- [00:32:13.600]talking about how cover crops can make phosphorus more plant available, and that allows them
- [00:32:16.980]to apply less.
- [00:32:17.860]The weed control example is a similar idea that you have maybe less savings the first
- [00:32:26.240]year, more in the third, more in the fifth, but this comes from an assumption that you
- [00:32:32.060]might either reduce an herbicide pass or eventually be able to use a lesser expensive
- [00:32:38.460]products, right?
- [00:32:39.460]So I just really did like these examples, the specificity that goes into them, a reminder
- [00:32:44.140]of there's lots of assumptions, but I do think that these are based in practicality and people
- [00:32:50.840]who've, again, done that careful management, tracked expenses over time.
- [00:32:55.760]Okay, so that was the SARE report.
- [00:33:01.620]That is, I think, a great resource.
- [00:33:03.020]And then I did want to also point to the link that I'm showing here, which is a
- [00:33:08.440]American Farmland Trust building these soil health case studies.
- [00:33:11.700]These were published initially a few years ago.
- [00:33:14.140]I've noticed, as I was doing my putting the presentation together, that they've
- [00:33:18.740]continued to add to them.
- [00:33:19.920]And they're definitely in the spirit of partial budgets.
- [00:33:24.360]I find them a little bit more kind of scenario-based.
- [00:33:27.960]And I think it's important to note that this is not solely about cover crops.
- [00:33:32.660]This is looking at a farm that's considering a whole soil health management system, right?
- [00:33:38.420]What American Farmland Trust did was they have at this point now 10 states and over
- [00:33:42.480]20 case studies been published or summarized between 2019 and 2022.
- [00:33:47.220]And again, I know that costs change very quickly, but that's why I think that the ranges and
- [00:33:53.500]also what are the categories are valuable in spite of variability in costs, right?
- [00:33:59.340]So what this example found and what they highlight here is that this corn soybean farm
- [00:34:08.400]was saving from their soil health management system.
- [00:34:10.880]Their estimate was $56 per acre improvement in their soil health system.
- [00:34:17.060]So they basically identified, if you look at kind of where that came from, that it came
- [00:34:22.300]from increases in yield, less field passes, and also decreases in costs for seeding, planting,
- [00:34:28.600]and fertilizer, right?
- [00:34:29.700]So I would say this example, at least what they highlight, feels less comprehensive to
- [00:34:34.740]me, but it also highlights, again, what are the categories?
- [00:34:37.920]What are the ways?
- [00:34:38.380]What are the ways that people are able to monetize their soil health system?
- [00:34:42.140]So this is a nice resource.
- [00:34:43.400]I don't believe they have reports specific to Nebraska, but maybe some examples, especially
- [00:34:50.440]some are, imagine that, not corn or soybean or wheat-based, and some are based in other
- [00:34:56.760]crops in other parts of the U.S., but still, I think some examples that can be very relevant
- [00:35:01.780]for us in Nebraska.
- [00:35:04.280]So that was SARE, American Farmland.
- [00:35:08.360]And I want to next talk about two more things to talk about as I wrap up, but the Soul Health
- [00:35:18.080]Institute put together a series of reports based on a series of interviews that they
- [00:35:24.740]did.
- [00:35:24.900]So this was a pretty large effort from Soul Health Institute.
- [00:35:26.840]I actually remember them getting in touch with me way back to look for names of folks
- [00:35:31.680]to interview.
- [00:35:32.100]So it was fun to see this kind of come all the way to fruition.
- [00:35:34.640]So they started interviewing folks in 2019, 2020.
- [00:35:38.340]They published their results 2020, 2021.
- [00:35:40.440]And I'm showing you on this slide, they have a lot of reports.
- [00:35:44.920]They have a lot of nice videos.
- [00:35:45.940]So they've built a lot of resources around their interview project.
- [00:35:49.780]And so here is the way that they categorized their costs and benefits analysis, right?
- [00:35:57.680]So they talked about things like what we've already talked about, reduced expenses, additional
- [00:36:03.520]costs, and revenue changes.
- [00:36:05.840]They kind of grouped things a little differently.
- [00:36:07.260]So again, we're not...
- [00:36:08.320]We're comparing apples to apples, really.
- [00:36:10.340]But again, they interviewed 100 farmers really across Corn Belt states, and they had 12 farmers
- [00:36:15.740]in Nebraska.
- [00:36:16.200]So they have separate reports for the different states and for overall.
- [00:36:19.640]So that first snapshot I showed you is from overall.
- [00:36:21.660]And here I'm showing you some of the highlights from the Nebraska-specific interviews.
- [00:36:25.340]And they showed pretty impressive increases in net farm income from the farmers that they
- [00:36:32.140]spoke to.
- [00:36:32.900]And so I do think it's important to recognize a couple things here in their reports, right?
- [00:36:38.300]That cover crops are not the only change in the interviews.
- [00:36:42.580]It was really, again, like the AFT reports, it was kind of the whole soil health system.
- [00:36:46.880]And again, that's how people are farming anyway.
- [00:36:48.760]But I do want to make the distinction.
- [00:36:50.520]It's not just thinking about how cover crops can pay.
- [00:36:53.920]So the farmers that they interviewed, on average, had been using no-till for about 25 years
- [00:37:00.260]and cover crops for 10 years.
- [00:37:01.580]So we were not talking about people who were just getting started.
- [00:37:04.540]A lot of the people who you probably, and we are probably interacting with.
- [00:37:08.280]And at the university, people who are curious, interested, concerned about costs.
- [00:37:12.540]These are people who have really figured it out already, right?
- [00:37:14.880]So what they estimated overall for Nebraska was a net income of increase, $68 per acre
- [00:37:21.940]for corn, $49 per acre for soybean.
- [00:37:24.100]This is really a huge increase.
- [00:37:27.060]I'm showing you here, too, the geographic range.
- [00:37:30.680]It was largely kind of south-central into eastern Nebraska where the interviews were
- [00:37:35.500]conducted.
- [00:37:38.260]And then I'm showing you the categories they include.
- [00:37:41.040]This was neat because they did actually break this out, their budgets for corn and for soybean,
- [00:37:45.240]which not every report has that level of detail.
- [00:37:49.160]And their savings came from a mix of different categories.
- [00:37:54.560]So it was things like equipment.
- [00:37:57.940]It was things like fertilizer and amendments.
- [00:38:00.760]It was also within the pesticide category as well.
- [00:38:06.200]So they had the reduced expenses.
- [00:38:08.240]They had additional expenses and additional revenues, right?
- [00:38:11.420]So they come up with a really nice number.
- [00:38:14.360]And I did kind of dig more into their methods to try to understand exactly, like, is this
- [00:38:19.980]comparing some of the same things that other reports have?
- [00:38:22.500]And I'm not entirely sure from what I found.
- [00:38:25.140]But I do think that, again, if we think about who is this population of folks that were
- [00:38:28.880]interviewed, you can see really some of the areas in a partial budget that really had
- [00:38:33.140]the opportunity, as I'm highlighting here, to either lead to less expenses.
- [00:38:38.220]Or greater revenue.
- [00:38:39.980]Okay, so the last resource I want to mention to you is maybe not as rosy.
- [00:38:50.320]Maybe it's more realistic.
- [00:38:51.360]I don't know how you want to think about it.
- [00:38:52.880]I think that this is a nice and important resource to highlight for all of you, which
- [00:38:57.080]was an effort that was done by some former colleagues of mine at Iowa State University
- [00:39:01.440]and led by an ag economist named Alejandro Placina.
- [00:39:06.480]And I actually remember when he started at Iowa.
- [00:39:08.200]I was finishing as a student about 10 years ago, and we had a conversation.
- [00:39:11.200]And I think that helped contribute to his acquiring the SARE grant that funded this
- [00:39:16.600]work, right?
- [00:39:17.140]So what they did was to work with about 15 farmers in Iowa to build partial budgets.
- [00:39:24.960]So I'm showing you a snapshot of their first page of their publication that's from a few
- [00:39:30.980]years back now.
- [00:39:31.760]So they built partial budgets with farmers using cover crops.
- [00:39:35.800]And what they found...
- [00:39:38.180]is that their annual net returns for cover crops were negative for most participants.
- [00:39:43.320]And so what I think is important to recognize, and they note this in their abstract, is that
- [00:39:48.060]they believe their approach was more accurate because they compared management within the
- [00:39:53.680]same farms, the same costs, right?
- [00:39:55.380]So it was more of a, like, control and treatment kind of set up the way they describe it, okay?
- [00:40:00.260]When I looked a little bit more carefully at what they did and what the Soil Health Institute
- [00:40:05.560]did, it looked like this effort...
- [00:40:08.160]This effort from Iowa had higher seed costs, higher termination costs, lower benefits,
- [00:40:14.660]and they did count cost share.
- [00:40:17.040]So maybe this is actually, like, quite a bit more realistic to people who are getting started
- [00:40:21.160]compared to some of the other reports that tend to focus on people who've had more experience
- [00:40:27.760]and more time.
- [00:40:28.340]So I would say the bottom line of this is it really matters what you count and how much
- [00:40:35.400]you count it.
- [00:40:35.920]And then thinking about those nuances of...
- [00:40:38.140]The amount of time that people have had experience with the system.
- [00:40:42.320]So I did just want to point to this website as well, which is something actually we use
- [00:40:49.060]in our CoverCrop course to do a little lab activity around calculating net returns.
- [00:40:53.720]I think it's a really nice resource.
- [00:40:54.840]So what they did is they turned those interviews and those ranges of costs into a calculator.
- [00:41:01.560]So it's a really simple tool.
- [00:41:04.400]So what you can see here, I just took one quick snapshot of what you do so you
- [00:41:08.120]can enter some basic considerations and then it will populate a spreadsheet with some mean
- [00:41:15.120]and median values that you can pull in or you can add them yourself.
- [00:41:18.500]It's actually just a really simple way to think about some of the net returns.
- [00:41:21.820]And so again, they are showing not always extremely negative net returns, but they're
- [00:41:26.380]not showing plus $56 per acre in production, right?
- [00:41:30.480]So I don't want to end on a negative note, but I think it's important that we are really
- [00:41:35.540]practical about, you know,
- [00:41:38.100]people getting started and what are some of the things that they might be experiencing
- [00:41:42.440]and really from a cost standpoint, but also the value and the importance of the cost share
- [00:41:47.720]programs and what that can provide for people getting started.
- [00:41:51.120]Okay, so let me just try to summarize all of this for you and then we'll get into our
- [00:41:58.440]breakout rooms.
- [00:41:59.340]So what do we know?
- [00:42:00.420]There's a lot of variability in some of these reports, right?
- [00:42:05.220]That they don't only necessarily vary year to year.
- [00:42:08.080]But they vary based on what we put in the big circle of how we try to calculate that
- [00:42:13.080]budget, right?
- [00:42:13.640]In spite of that, I still think that they can give us some reasonable estimates of what
- [00:42:18.800]are costs plus or minus, revenues plus or minus.
- [00:42:22.960]Again, and then what are the categories within all of them?
- [00:42:25.440]And what are the ways that you might start to talk about farmers that come into the office
- [00:42:28.720]or that come to meetings about, well, think about if you could reduce tillage.
- [00:42:32.260]Think about if you could reduce herbicide passes or track field costs, et cetera.
- [00:42:38.880]So we think about what goes into partial budget for cover crops.
- [00:42:43.320]We want to think about seed planting, inputs, how they might increase or decrease.
- [00:42:48.340]Same with labor or equipment.
- [00:42:50.220]And then those same categories seem to come up time over time in these reports in terms
- [00:42:55.740]of yields, grazing, forage, cost share programs as ways that cover crops can pay back faster.
- [00:43:03.220]Again, it makes a big difference how much you include in your
- [00:43:08.040]partial budget, how you try to quantify benefits.
- [00:43:09.920]We can see some big differences, especially in those last two examples that I shared.
- [00:43:13.420]I do think that this temporal piece, this careful tracking of management and your,
- [00:43:18.600]or let's say careful management and accrual of benefits and careful tracking of costs
- [00:43:23.800]all come into play when we think about the positive reports.
- [00:43:26.520]And then finally, here's just a summary of some of the resources that I've put together
- [00:43:32.220]that we will make available to you.
- [00:43:34.000]I didn't mention the ABC calculator tool, but that is another website that if you're
- [00:43:38.020]really interested in looking at numbers or helping someone with the numbers, that tool
- [00:43:42.680]pulls in kind of all that information from the platform.
- [00:43:45.040]So lots of reports and case studies, and then that Iowa State Net Returns Calculator.
- [00:43:50.980]So that's what I wanted to share with you today.
- [00:43:54.720]And with that, I will invite Vash maybe to tell us about the breakout rooms, how we are
