- [00:00:01.000]The NIS Robotics Fellowship is really a program designed
- [00:00:04.250]to connect passionate builders with really all the resources
- [00:00:09.166]that Lincoln and the Southeast Nebraska regional ecosystem have to offer.
- [00:00:15.416]Whether that's materials, equipment,
- [00:00:18.375]coaching, technology or opportunity.
- [00:00:22.000]This is our inaugural pilot program
- [00:00:24.083]and the impact has been incredible.
- [00:00:28.416]-My name is Brooke Brode.
- [00:00:29.916]-Brooke came in here with the prototype.
- [00:00:31.666]And, so much of her work has been more on
- [00:00:35.958]strategy and project management and identifying resources
- [00:00:41.041]to help solve the problems
- [00:00:42.291]that she's facing with her business and with her start up day to day.
- [00:00:45.250]-If you think about, like, the average rancher and the Nebraska Sandhills right
- [00:00:48.458]and they're raising anywhere between like, 40 and, like 2000 head of cattle.
- [00:00:52.458]And for these ranchers
- [00:00:53.541]to manage their hydration of their cattle that are out on the pasture,
- [00:00:56.916]they have to drive to every single tank and look at it. For some of the tanks
- [00:01:01.208]that's, you know, chopping ice, for others, it's fixing broken windmills.
- [00:01:04.916]the project I'm working on for this program is a piece of hardware
- [00:01:09.000]that attaches to the side of the tank,
- [00:01:11.000]that uses a sensor to measure the water level and the water temperature,
- [00:01:14.333]and then sends that over either cellular network or satellite,
- [00:01:18.083]so that a rancher can see the conditions of the tank
- [00:01:21.458]from a website so they don't have to drive to every tank to know what's happening.
- [00:01:24.916]And they also know what's happening at those tanks before they leave.
- [00:01:28.291]I built a prototype of this project last year.
- [00:01:31.250]And it worked really well outdoors for about three weeks.
- [00:01:33.625]And then we put it that with cattle, they destroyed it.
- [00:01:36.000]because they just apply some obscene amount of force.
- [00:01:38.583]And if you cross an elephant
- [00:01:39.875]with a toddler, you get a cow. They chew on everything.
- [00:01:43.791]They push it really hard. They're just really curious,
- [00:01:47.583]What I really liked about the
- [00:01:48.375]program is that I got extended access to the studio.
- [00:01:51.541]I'm primarily only available in the mornings,
- [00:01:53.833]and the studio is primarily open in the afternoons.
- [00:01:56.291]And so I get the chance to come in here
- [00:01:59.583]when it's not technically open yet and work on things and ask a lot of questions.
- [00:02:03.458]If I could give
- [00:02:05.208]any rancher their time and money back so they could spend more time with that,
- [00:02:08.666]you know, their next generation, that they're doing so much more,
- [00:02:11.958]that's really the goal
- [00:02:13.833]of what I'm trying to do here.
