- [00:00:00.000]So not is kind of one of my favorite words.
- [00:00:11.520]We tend to throw in all the things we want them to do first.
- [00:00:17.580]But what we can see is that a lot of times when I am called in to help with a behavior plan,
- [00:00:27.140]it's because a student wants to escape or avoid something.
- [00:00:30.720]And we need to build in their skill set for protest.
- [00:00:34.460]So not allows for that protest.
- [00:00:37.560]Not like, I'm not like that.
- [00:00:39.940]And not is developmentally appropriate before we build in opposites even.
- [00:00:45.500]So it helps us then to automatically take the verbs that we're going to train in
- [00:00:52.820]and have a double meaning really rapidly.
- [00:00:56.280]So it allows for that negative or the opposite in sharing of that information.
- [00:01:02.160]So on your board or your device, or if you are using sign, no, not.
- [00:01:11.600]My kids tease me that I used this all the time when I was in trainings
- [00:01:20.120]and I wanted to communicate with them off screen.
- [00:01:24.220]I would keep my face on.
- [00:01:26.220]On screen and focused on you guys.
- [00:01:28.640]But out of screenshot, I was going, no, no, no, not.
- [00:01:34.160]Don't do that.
- [00:01:35.940]Okay.
- [00:01:36.580]And so I was able to communicate in multiple ways.
- [00:01:40.140]Right.
- [00:01:40.420]And so we want to practice don't or not.
- [00:01:44.500]Right.
- [00:01:45.000]What are three statements or comments?
- [00:01:50.580]Okay.
- [00:01:52.400]It's Halloween.
- [00:01:53.540]I have Snickers.
- [00:01:54.980]I have peanut M.
- [00:01:56.160]And M's.
- [00:01:56.700]What comments could you make for not for not statements or comments?
- [00:02:04.840]Three of them.
- [00:02:05.700]I not like I do not eat at all.
- [00:02:12.120]Like that's a really good.
- [00:02:13.760]Don't eat at all.
- [00:02:16.160]You'll get a stomachache.
- [00:02:17.360]Right.
- [00:02:17.960]Not for me.
- [00:02:20.640]No, not like that.
- [00:02:22.380]I don't need it.
- [00:02:23.340]No, not want.
- [00:02:26.100]I learned the hard way when I started to fill my treasure bucket at school.
- [00:02:33.100]I filled it all with chocolate because that's what I liked.
- [00:02:35.260]Guess what?
- [00:02:36.300]The kids hated it.
- [00:02:37.520]They didn't have any desire to have all the chocolate.
- [00:02:40.020]There might've been one.
- [00:02:41.040]They wanted sour, sour gummies, sour patch kids, sour, sour, sour.
- [00:02:46.400]And so what a beautiful way to let our kids have some control, some power over their life
- [00:02:54.600]by building.
- [00:02:56.040]That ability to protest and let us know what they don't like.
- [00:03:01.060]I just continue to hear advocates to just say, you guys just force us to do everything
- [00:03:06.820]that you wanted.
- [00:03:07.640]And we didn't really get to have a say.
- [00:03:09.320]They didn't learn how to protest well.
- [00:03:11.220]So we want them to be able to protest and say, no, not, not like, I'm not like that.
- [00:03:18.780]I not want, no.
- [00:03:20.760]Okay.
- [00:03:21.460]Very good.
- [00:03:22.560]All right.
- [00:03:23.680]Uh, this is.
- [00:03:25.980]I heard somebody say loud and clear.
- [00:03:28.040]These are hard words to teach and believe me, they are hard, but again, we have amazing
- [00:03:36.320]resources.
- [00:03:37.120]Core word of the day is one of my favorites.
- [00:03:40.160]She has gone in and done some phenomenal work for us.
- [00:03:44.680]She has created these slide decks.
- [00:03:46.760]So this entire slide deck of 19, um, is not, and I actually think that she has updated
- [00:03:54.340]a bunch of her slide decks.
- [00:03:55.920]- Oh, I should probably go in
- [00:03:56.980]check that. This is in your landing page. You guys have access to this, but this is not specifically.
- [00:04:02.820]She has the not pick card and she has some memes and gifs. She has, hey, this is what the adult is
- [00:04:11.500]responsible for. Get the attention of the student. Model the core word. Respond to all student
- [00:04:17.100]attempts to communicate. Don't forget, don't forget their human value. Value all of those
- [00:04:22.440]attempts. The adult will not, this is important, they will not forcefully grab them and use hand
- [00:04:29.620]over hand if there is not student assent. They are not going to place demands on the student.
- [00:04:36.400]They're going to ask the student if they want to and invite them in. They're not going to
- [00:04:42.420]be forceful with them. And the student then will look while the adult models, hopefully. We want
- [00:04:48.440]to build in that ability with them and their willingness to come.
- [00:04:52.420]And then they're going to respond if they want to. Believe me, when you're using their favorite
- [00:04:59.620]things and they are gaining access to some of this cool stuff, and this one helps them get out
- [00:05:08.560]of things that they don't want to do, we see that students are sometimes more readily reinforced by
- [00:05:15.560]negative reinforcement than by positive reinforcement. So not is a very powerful word.
- [00:05:22.240]There it is. She has all of these different core boards that are available. She has video modeling
- [00:05:30.720]of how to do phrases. She has the functions of communication. What functions is it meeting?
- [00:05:38.040]It's going to meet their wants and needs. They're going to be able to gain and share information.
- [00:05:42.220]They're going to build and maintain social relationships with this word. They're going
- [00:05:46.820]to be able to participate in social etiquette in this.
- [00:05:51.980]And then there's internal dialogue. How amazing is that to start to build in
- [00:05:56.700]our students' internal dialogue? We all have stories. We all have words going
- [00:06:01.760]on in our heads all of the time. And so we want our students to start
- [00:06:06.600]to learn this as well. She has beautiful
- [00:06:10.560]book ideas. She has created videos
- [00:06:16.780]and has little videos that pair up with books.
- [00:06:21.720]She has used Tar Heel Reader on this and
- [00:06:26.660]given all of these different examples of not. I do not
- [00:06:31.780]like trash. I do not like all of this dirt.
- [00:06:35.680]I cannot spell hippopotamus. And she has
- [00:06:40.900]videos on that. And Tar Heel Reader is just a phenomenal resource.
- [00:06:45.680]We can make books. There are full songs that have been developed to help us learn
- [00:06:51.460]how to use the word not. So please understand, you guys,
- [00:06:56.640]there are resources. There are phenomenal resources out there that help us
- [00:07:01.780]to train in. You are right. They are hard words to train in. But we have
- [00:07:06.660]great resources here for you that you can have access to.
- [00:07:11.800]And if you guys have resources yourself, we've been adding them
- [00:07:16.400]onto the landing page. So if you have some of those resources,
- [00:07:21.200]to share as well, please let us know. We are happy to pull them
- [00:07:26.100]in. So core word of the day is from, you can find it on Facebook
- [00:07:34.660]and you just sign up and then she'll share all of it with you.
- [00:07:38.740]Thank you.
