- [00:00:00.000]we are ready to move into the teaching techniques we have
- [00:00:16.140]all right and a half left we can do it we're getting close so we're going to spend the rest
- [00:00:23.420]of the time talking about teaching so we've gone through the types of systems we might be using
- [00:00:30.960]how to choose those systems how to work with those systems what vocabulary we're going to start with
- [00:00:37.040]how to figure out your baseline how to assess your student how to write some goals and now
- [00:00:42.400]like how do we actually teach those skills so we're going to talk about I'm going to talk about
- [00:00:48.260]that for the rest of the afternoon a few things in the chat team Kimball
- [00:00:53.060]like Megan said we're going to talk about that right in this next section so hopefully that
- [00:00:57.080]answers your questions and Skye I love that your SLP is working with the resource teacher and the
- [00:01:04.760]paras during their sessions and what what awesome modeling for you guys to see and to carry through
- [00:01:11.080]all of that so that is that is awesome happy to see that so
- [00:01:17.320]we like I mentioned earlier a lot of people get tied up
- [00:01:22.700]in that I don't know how to teach AAC so our goal is not to teach
- [00:01:27.680]AAC our goal is to make conversations it's to establish and foster relationships
- [00:01:32.860]and capture interest and share interest so that's our goal not how do we teach
- [00:01:39.020]AAC so we'll be talking about that next
- [00:01:44.020]so we've talked a lot about the tools today but we also have to talk about the teaching and I love this this quote from
- [00:01:52.340]Gail Van Tatenhoe that access to technology does not ensure that students
- [00:01:57.940]speaking with AAC are going to receive a free and appropriate public education and that is our mandate
- [00:02:03.140]through federal and state special education law that we are providing students with a free and appropriate
- [00:02:08.040]public education success for school using
- [00:02:13.000]AAC is complex and subtle than other other than just
- [00:02:18.160]we gave them we gave them the thing so now they can use it there has to be that
- [00:02:21.980]training for the student for the teachers for the parent you can think of this as
- [00:02:27.860]you know I have absolutely no musical talent whatsoever myself and it doesn't
- [00:02:32.960]matter if you put the most basic or the fanciest or like the most traditional or
- [00:02:40.260]or the newest keyboard, piano in front of me,
- [00:02:43.640]I am not going to be able to play the piano.
- [00:02:45.940]So regardless of what kind of piano you put in front of me,
- [00:02:49.260]I am not going to be able to play it.
- [00:02:51.380]I, for the life of me, cannot play basketball.
- [00:02:54.980]I am terrible at basketball.
- [00:02:56.100]If you give me a basketball and hoop,
- [00:02:58.140]I am not going to be able to play basketball
- [00:03:00.380]without somebody taking the time to train me
- [00:03:03.300]and teach me to do so.
- [00:03:04.960]So we can't just give kids systems or devices
- [00:03:08.960]and then expect that they will know how to use them.
- [00:03:12.860]And I think this is one of the things
- [00:03:14.580]in my background and experience
- [00:03:19.000]that really made this concept click for me,
- [00:03:22.980]because if your education and training was,
- [00:03:26.000]if your background was as an SLP,
- [00:03:29.080]especially working with maybe patients
- [00:03:32.320]who have had a stroke or something,
- [00:03:34.920]who have a language system,
- [00:03:36.400]and now we just need to figure out
- [00:03:37.560]some other access method
- [00:03:38.840]for that language system,
- [00:03:40.320]that is totally different than working with students
- [00:03:44.100]who have not yet developed any type of language system.
- [00:03:47.400]So we're working on developing that whole thing
- [00:03:49.860]through what we're doing in our teaching
- [00:03:51.680]and training techniques.
- [00:03:53.140]This is straight from Rule 51, screenshot from Rule 51,
- [00:03:58.660]speaking specifically about how we need to have
- [00:04:03.100]both devices and services available to students
- [00:04:07.280]and learners through our school system.
- [00:04:08.720]So they're just a direct link to where that's found
- [00:04:13.720]in the rule and the law, and so not only is it
- [00:04:17.120]our best practice and our best bet for good results,
- [00:04:21.080]it's also right there in our special education law.
- [00:04:24.600]There's also a bullet point at the end about access.
- [00:04:29.400]So sometimes teams will say, well, we can,
- [00:04:34.060]they can use that device in school,
- [00:04:35.680]but administration doesn't really want them to take
- [00:04:38.600]it like to the basketball game or whatever.
- [00:04:40.680]And so there is also part of the law that talks
- [00:04:43.700]specifically about, yes,
- [00:04:44.880]we do need to make it available in those extracurricular
- [00:04:47.580]activities in their, you know,
- [00:04:49.960]their student council or their FCA or their FFA or whatever
- [00:04:54.140]they're involved in.
- [00:04:55.960]We need to make sure that they have that at all times.
- [00:05:00.080]So there's the, there's a reference for that.
- [00:05:02.520]If, if you happen to come up against that.
- [00:05:05.560]If you happen to come up against that you need to make sure that they have that at all
- [00:05:10.000]times.
- [00:05:11.000]If you happen to come up against that you need to make sure that they have that at all
- [00:05:11.980]times.
- [00:05:12.980]If you happen to come up against that you need to make sure that they have that at all
- [00:05:13.980]times.
- [00:05:14.980]If you happen to come up against that you need to make sure that they have that at all
- [00:05:15.980]times.
- [00:05:16.980]If you happen to come up against that you need to make sure that they have that at all
- [00:05:17.980]times.
- [00:05:18.980]If you happen to come up against that you need to make sure that they have that at all
