Description
The University of Graz, which was founded in 1585, is Austria's second oldest university and one of the largest in the country. Many excellent scientists, amongst them six Nobel laureates, have taught and researched here.
With 32,500 students and 4,300 employees the University of Graz contributes significantly to the vibrating life of the Styrian capital. Its location in Europe encourages a lively scientific, economic and cultural exchange with South-East Europe, from which not only the city benefits, but also its educational institutions.

- [00:00:02.100]So welcome, everybody, to our short info session
- [00:00:05.190]about the University of Graz.
- [00:00:08.340]We'd just like to introduce our city a little bit to you,
- [00:00:11.610]our university, and we'll, of course,
- [00:00:14.730]be open to any questions you might have.
- [00:00:17.970]So first off, let me give you an overview
- [00:00:21.330]of where Austria is located.
- [00:00:24.390]Austria, the country our university is located in.
- [00:00:28.200]You can see it on the map of Europe there.
- [00:00:30.870]We like to say that we are in the heart of Europe.
- [00:00:36.630]You can also see that we have about 9 million inhabitants.
- [00:00:42.750]And you can see distances from Graz
- [00:00:46.020]to different other cities,
- [00:00:47.850]mostly cities that our incoming students
- [00:00:52.890]will travel to during their stay very often
- [00:00:57.120]because Graz is definitely a good starting point for trips
- [00:01:02.070]to other countries, to other cities in Europe.
- [00:01:05.490]Quite easy to reach and to learn more about the culture,
- [00:01:09.750]not only of Austria but also of Europe in general
- [00:01:12.960]for students joining us for their exchange.
- [00:01:17.940]The City of Graz is part of UNESCO's World Heritage.
- [00:01:23.310]So the inner city, you can see a picture here
- [00:01:27.390]that's taken from the top of our so-called Schlossberg.
- [00:01:32.400]It's a little hill in the middle of the city
- [00:01:36.210]that students also like to go up on
- [00:01:38.880]to have a good view of Graz.
- [00:01:42.060]Graz was also cultural capital in 2003
- [00:01:46.680]and UNESCO City of Design in 2011.
- [00:01:51.330]And when looking at the architecture of Graz,
- [00:01:54.780]we can certainly see the remnants
- [00:01:57.030]of the cultural capitals a year
- [00:02:00.060]because a lot of new buildings were created
- [00:02:02.940]during that time.
- [00:02:04.380]A lot of them quite modern,
- [00:02:07.020]and we have that in the city of Graz quite often,
- [00:02:10.260]this combination of the old architecture of the old city
- [00:02:13.980]with rather modern architecture which works quite well.
- [00:02:20.014]Graz in total has around 300,000 inhabitants,
- [00:02:24.650]60,000 of which are students.
- [00:02:28.020]So you can see it's a very young city.
- [00:02:30.060]It's a very student-oriented city.
- [00:02:33.270]All in all, there are eight different universities
- [00:02:36.270]and colleges in Graz.
- [00:02:38.810]So the 60,000 students basically are spread
- [00:02:41.910]among those different higher education institutions.
- [00:02:49.710]About a half of the student population of Graz
- [00:02:53.940]are actually students of the University of Graz,
- [00:02:58.320]University of Graz being the biggest university,
- [00:03:01.440]also the most comprehensive university
- [00:03:04.080]and the oldest university in Graz.
- [00:03:08.070]Among those students,
- [00:03:09.600]there is about 19% international students,
- [00:03:13.200]that includes both degree-seeking students
- [00:03:16.290]but also exchange students.
- [00:03:19.440]We also have the numbers of our outgoing
- [00:03:22.350]and incoming students just so you get an idea
- [00:03:25.890]of the international community,
- [00:03:29.250]incoming students will be a part of
- [00:03:31.830]when coming to the University of Graz.
- [00:03:35.160]Those students coming to the University of Graz
- [00:03:37.567]come from around 500
- [00:03:39.690]different partner institutions worldwide.
- [00:03:42.960]Now the largest part of those institutions, of course,
- [00:03:46.320]are within Europe.
- [00:03:47.610]So part of the Erasmus program,
- [00:03:49.410]that's around 300 partner institutions,
- [00:03:52.770]but that still leaves quite a number of partners overseas
- [00:03:57.060]outside of the European Union that also like to send
- [00:04:00.720]their students our way to spend a semester
- [00:04:03.630]or a year with us.
- [00:04:05.737]Uni Graz has about 160 different degree programs,
- [00:04:10.650]so that's bachelor programs, master programs,
- [00:04:13.290]doctoral programs.
- [00:04:15.420]And as far as both an academic focus
- [00:04:18.630]but also regional focus goes,
- [00:04:21.060]we have a focus on southeastern Europe.
- [00:04:23.670]So those are countries that is a region our university works
- [00:04:28.110]with quite frequently.
- [00:04:30.600]There is common research going on.
- [00:04:33.420]It also trickles down to teaching, to the courses,
- [00:04:38.400]so that's a very important focus.
- [00:04:42.270]The university has six faculties or schools,
- [00:04:45.990]so let's have a look at those.
- [00:04:48.630]The youngest faculty is the faculty
- [00:04:50.820]of Environmental, Regional & Educational Sciences.
- [00:04:55.920]There is also the School of Business Economics
- [00:04:58.213]& Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities,
- [00:05:02.340]Natural Sciences, Theology, that is Catholic theology,
- [00:05:07.140]and Law.
- [00:05:12.300]So what can students expect when coming
- [00:05:14.940]to the University of Graz as exchange students?
- [00:05:18.330]So we have quite an important welcome culture.
- [00:05:21.870]It's very important for us to make
- [00:05:24.000]our incoming students welcome,
- [00:05:25.890]to support them in getting settled,
- [00:05:28.560]and in hopefully making Graz and the University of Graz
- [00:05:33.000]their second home during this period with us.
- [00:05:36.840]So that includes basically get started
- [00:05:39.870]with the time when students get nominated.
- [00:05:43.560]So we'll then contact them,
- [00:05:45.690]and we are offering applicant sessions throughout the period
- [00:05:50.400]where students are applying in our online system.
- [00:05:53.790]So those are online sessions where we basically go
- [00:05:57.510]through the most important aspects of the application
- [00:06:01.350]but also of the preparation for their stay.
- [00:06:04.980]This has proved to be quite helpful for the students as well
- [00:06:09.060]because it allows them to ask questions
- [00:06:11.460]right then and there
- [00:06:12.810]instead of sending emails back and forth.
- [00:06:17.340]Once students arrive on our campus,
- [00:06:20.850]we offer orientation days which are basically meant
- [00:06:25.110]to help them get settled at the university.
- [00:06:27.930]So take the most important step for them
- [00:06:31.200]to then become students, start their courses
- [00:06:34.800]and be able to focus on their academic work for their stay.
- [00:06:39.780]We also have a group of academic advisors
- [00:06:44.160]who will support the students on an academic level.
- [00:06:47.160]So for any questions on courses,
- [00:06:50.100]for any questions on which courses to choose,
- [00:06:54.330]what is an op-fer, what corresponds to the courses
- [00:06:57.750]they would need to transfer to their home university.
- [00:07:01.620]Those academic advisors are professors.
- [00:07:04.260]So there's one professor per area of study
- [00:07:08.400]who is a contact for the incoming students.
- [00:07:11.490]But not only at the point when students arrive,
- [00:07:14.400]those academic advisors will be available
- [00:07:17.610]even during the period of application
- [00:07:20.640]and then, of course, throughout the entire semester
- [00:07:23.910]for students to contact if they have any academic concerns,
- [00:07:27.750]if they have any questions.
- [00:07:31.830]The orientation days will take place in the month
- [00:07:34.950]of September for the winter semester
- [00:07:37.350]and in the month of February for the summer semester.
- [00:07:40.530]So that's always the month before the actual semester starts
- [00:07:45.630]and that includes the orientation days, academic advising.
- [00:07:49.380]It allows the students to actually take the time
- [00:07:52.110]to get settled and to get all the stuff done
- [00:07:57.570]you need to get done when arriving in a new place,
- [00:08:01.080]when moving in, when getting settled.
- [00:08:04.440]At the same time during this month,
- [00:08:07.077]the university also offers German language courses.
- [00:08:11.520]Those are intensive courses,
- [00:08:14.490]and it allows the students to actually already collect
- [00:08:17.940]six ECTS before the semester even starts.
- [00:08:22.560]Those courses are available for a small fee.
- [00:08:25.320]They are co-funded by our office.
- [00:08:28.650]And of course, then later on during the semester,
- [00:08:31.770]there is also the possibility for students to continue
- [00:08:35.280]with German language courses
- [00:08:37.260]throughout the semester as well.
- [00:08:39.210]Those are not intensive courses anymore during the semester.
- [00:08:42.990]They will take place once a week.
- [00:08:47.790]Of course, there is another part of our support network
- [00:08:51.900]for the students of our welcome network
- [00:08:54.360]and that is the Erasmus Student Network.
- [00:08:57.810]And while they are called a Erasmus Student Network,
- [00:09:01.350]they, of course, take care of all the incoming students,
- [00:09:05.100]irrelevant of which country
- [00:09:07.080]or which continent they come from.
- [00:09:10.530]The one part of their service that's most important
- [00:09:14.190]for our incoming students when they prepare
- [00:09:17.670]to come to Graz when they arrive is the buddy program
- [00:09:21.300]because that is the program they can sign up for
- [00:09:24.540]to have a counterpart who, when they arrive,
- [00:09:29.250]will help them to get settled.
- [00:09:30.990]They can pick them up from the airport
- [00:09:33.300]or the train station in Graz.
- [00:09:35.400]They can pick up their their dorm key
- [00:09:38.130]and then basically help them get settled.
- [00:09:40.980]And in addition to the students, of course, being in contact
- [00:09:44.340]with our international office,
- [00:09:46.260]it's kind of a contact on the same level student to student,
- [00:09:50.220]and I'm sure different additional perspective
- [00:09:53.430]for our newly-arrived incoming students.
- [00:09:57.510]The ESN section will also provide social events
- [00:10:01.770]throughout the entire academic year.
- [00:10:04.380]So that trips, trips to other cities in Austria,
- [00:10:08.940]outside of Austria.
- [00:10:10.920]They actually also collaborate with ESN section
- [00:10:13.980]in neighboring countries and do events together,
- [00:10:18.540]city tours, so all kinds of activities.
- [00:10:23.610]Our office will, of course, support students
- [00:10:26.280]with visa residents permit depending on how long they stay
- [00:10:31.170]if they are non-EU students.
- [00:10:34.530]Students who stay for a full year and are non-EU students
- [00:10:39.570]will need the residence permit
- [00:10:41.310]and will then also need to sign up
- [00:10:43.080]for Austrian health insurance,
- [00:10:45.960]which is also a process we support the students with.
- [00:10:50.220]And at the university, in addition to all of these services
- [00:10:54.990]I've mentioned, we also have an a specific office
- [00:11:00.810]that caters to students with special needs.
- [00:11:03.840]So that is basically everything from psychological support
- [00:11:08.520]if there are mental health issues,
- [00:11:13.250]from support if there is any kind of additional need
- [00:11:17.010]for courses, longer exam times for exams
- [00:11:22.200]or anything like that.
- [00:11:25.740]Our university, as many universities in Austria
- [00:11:29.850]or in Europe, does not have a gym
- [00:11:32.460]that students can make use of.
- [00:11:34.680]But we have USI, so that's the University Sports Institute.
- [00:11:41.250]And they offer sports courses, those are leisure courses,
- [00:11:45.810]not academic courses, so they don't come with ECTS.
- [00:11:50.220]So that's leisure sport courses in all kinds
- [00:11:53.070]of different sports for a very, very small fee,
- [00:11:56.370]especially for students.
- [00:11:58.350]And those courses as well are a really good opportunity
- [00:12:02.130]for the students to network with other students,
- [00:12:06.960]with other international and local students,
- [00:12:09.390]but also with professors and people working
- [00:12:11.550]at the university because we also take those courses.
- [00:12:14.310]So we always advise students to think about that.
- [00:12:21.360]So let me go into academic information
- [00:12:24.450]because that's quite important to know about requirements
- [00:12:29.940]and also to know whether University of Graz is a good match.
- [00:12:35.100]We expect students to have language level B2
- [00:12:39.390]in either German or English,
- [00:12:42.390]depending on which language they wanna take courses in.
- [00:12:47.940]As far as certificates are concerned,
- [00:12:50.670]we, of course, accept general official certificates
- [00:12:55.803]like if we go into English, IELTS, TOEFL and so on.
- [00:12:59.790]But we also accept confirmations
- [00:13:03.060]issued by the home university.
- [00:13:05.610]So if, for example, at your university you have
- [00:13:08.820]a language center and the language center will confirm
- [00:13:12.600]the language level of a student in English or in German,
- [00:13:16.350]we will accept that because we are partners,
- [00:13:19.980]we trust each other.
- [00:13:23.220]We also have a requirement, as far as ECTS goes,
- [00:13:27.150]we require incoming students to take a minimum
- [00:13:30.310]of 16 ECTS credits per semester.
- [00:13:34.740]To give you an idea of how much that is,
- [00:13:37.950]a full workload for international students
- [00:13:42.060]is considered 24 to 30 ECTS, yeah.
- [00:13:46.140]So the minimum we expect students
- [00:13:48.540]to successfully complete is 16.
- [00:13:51.690]Of course, if you as a home university assign more ECTS,
- [00:13:56.370]then the students will follow your instructions
- [00:14:00.180]and your guidelines as far as that is concerned.
- [00:14:05.220]When talking to our incoming students,
- [00:14:07.260]it's always very important to us to make clear to them
- [00:14:12.090]that any decision about credit transfer,
- [00:14:14.940]so the actual decision of which courses
- [00:14:18.330]can transfer to their home university and in which way,
- [00:14:22.650]always lies with the home university.
- [00:14:27.390]One aspect that might be interesting for your students
- [00:14:32.280]is that bachelor-level students can actually take
- [00:14:37.230]bachelor courses across all faculties.
- [00:14:40.920]So while we will enroll a bachelor-level student,
- [00:14:44.010]for example, if it's a (indistinct) student
- [00:14:47.130]in, for example, English and American studies,
- [00:14:49.500]the bachelor program, the student can still reach out
- [00:14:52.950]and take courses in history, in biology,
- [00:14:57.210]in law, too.
- [00:14:59.580]And very often students do that
- [00:15:01.380]to fulfill their general requirements.
- [00:15:03.780]So that's always a possibility on bachelor level.
- [00:15:09.270]There is also one additional opportunity
- [00:15:13.110]that might be interesting and that is co-enrollment
- [00:15:16.710]at other universities in Graz.
- [00:15:20.070]That is basically possible,
- [00:15:22.260]and there is no extra cost linked to that.
- [00:15:25.320]So students are coming in as exchange students
- [00:15:28.110]at the University of Graz can also, via co-enrollment,
- [00:15:32.670]take courses, for example,
- [00:15:34.440]at the technical university in Graz,
- [00:15:36.900]at the medical university in Graz,
- [00:15:39.390]at the University of Music and Performing Arts.
- [00:15:43.260]However, what's important to note is the credits
- [00:15:47.190]that they take at the other university
- [00:15:50.250]will not count towards the credit requirement
- [00:15:53.280]of the University of Graz.
- [00:15:55.200]Those will be on top of the 16 ECTS.
- [00:15:59.910]And if students are interested in this co-enrollment,
- [00:16:02.640]of course, during our orientation days,
- [00:16:05.190]we will give them guidelines on how to go about it,
- [00:16:08.790]how to co-enroll at the other university
- [00:16:12.590]so that they can then enroll in courses there as well.
- [00:16:20.970]Talking about courses, and I've already mentioned
- [00:16:24.570]students might want to take English-taught courses only
- [00:16:29.010]because they don't have the respective German level
- [00:16:32.250]to take German-taught courses.
- [00:16:34.710]That's generally possible.
- [00:16:36.510]However, at Uni Graz,
- [00:16:38.880]not all our bachelor programs do have a large number
- [00:16:42.870]of English-taught courses.
- [00:16:44.790]So some only have the old course,
- [00:16:47.340]like a lot of our natural science bachelors.
- [00:16:50.715]Here on the slide, I've listed the areas
- [00:16:53.490]that have really a large number of English-taught courses
- [00:16:57.660]where students can count on taking courses
- [00:17:01.110]just from that field of study
- [00:17:03.030]and be able to fill their requirement
- [00:17:05.640]with English-taught courses.
- [00:17:07.950]So that's English and American studies
- [00:17:10.140]for very obvious reasons, business and economics,
- [00:17:14.370]philosophy, psychology, sociology and law.
- [00:17:19.710]Our law degree also includes human rights,
- [00:17:23.640]political science, so all of that,
- [00:17:26.070]all of those courses are offered under the header of law.
- [00:17:32.400]Now while these fields of study allow the students
- [00:17:36.990]to just take courses from that field
- [00:17:39.300]and be able to work their requirements with English only,
- [00:17:46.800]we do have students come in who have no German knowledge
- [00:17:50.520]or not enough to take German-taught classes
- [00:17:53.310]who are not from those fields of study
- [00:17:55.350]and still come to Uni Graz.
- [00:17:57.780]What they very often do, and that's also possible,
- [00:18:01.200]is that they will take courses
- [00:18:03.840]to fill their general requirements.
- [00:18:06.150]So instead of focusing just on one field of study,
- [00:18:10.290]what they will do on bachelor level is basically branch out,
- [00:18:14.910]as I explained before, to the different faculties
- [00:18:19.080]and take the courses that they still require
- [00:18:22.200]to fill their general requirements.
- [00:18:25.140]And that's, of course, always also a possibility.
- [00:18:30.180]I will provide the presentation after the session.
- [00:18:34.920]And you will have a link here also of how to search
- [00:18:38.760]for courses, both English-taught courses
- [00:18:41.700]and also the overall course guide,
- [00:18:43.980]including German-taught and English-taught courses.
- [00:18:50.070]Now two aspects we are asked about quite often,
- [00:18:53.610]so we've basically put them on a separate slide
- [00:18:57.030]is housing and also meals.
- [00:19:01.410]As far as housing goes, we have quite a wide variety
- [00:19:04.770]of different dorms in Graz that students can choose from.
- [00:19:09.840]Dorms are not university owned,
- [00:19:12.290]so that is something that's very important to know.
- [00:19:15.510]So we as the university do not own the dorm,
- [00:19:18.690]those are privately owned.
- [00:19:22.260]But we have all the information about the different dorms
- [00:19:25.620]on our orientation website
- [00:19:28.200]where students can check them out,
- [00:19:30.540]can contact them and then make a decision
- [00:19:33.090]of which placement they want to go for.
- [00:19:36.720]One difference, especially to American universities,
- [00:19:40.650]might be that in Graz all dorms
- [00:19:44.070]are centrally located in residential areas.
- [00:19:47.790]So while we have like a, by now, kind of an area campus
- [00:19:54.420]for the university that comprises
- [00:19:57.510]all the different departments and faculties and so on,
- [00:20:02.160]the dorms themselves are located in the residential areas
- [00:20:06.150]throughout the city, and all of them are co-ed.
- [00:20:11.310]They usually have an apartment-like set up
- [00:20:14.040]where students have either their own room or a double room
- [00:20:17.430]with another student of the same sex,
- [00:20:19.890]and they have shared facilities like bathroom,
- [00:20:23.160]kitchen and so on.
- [00:20:25.770]As far as meals go, we have, by now,
- [00:20:30.300]a large number of different restaurants
- [00:20:32.460]right around the university, around campus, on campus
- [00:20:35.998]usually also offering discounts for students as well,
- [00:20:41.520]also offering vegetarian, vegan meals.
- [00:20:44.130]So any such needs can be met
- [00:20:47.940]by having a look at the different restaurants
- [00:20:50.730]and the different cafes around.
- [00:20:54.030]University of Graz does not have meal plans
- [00:20:57.030]like many American universities do.
- [00:20:59.640]So students basically either decide
- [00:21:02.910]to make their own meals in their dorms,
- [00:21:06.210]in their dorm apartments or use the restaurants
- [00:21:09.480]and the cafes around, as I mentioned,
- [00:21:12.240]many of them really specifically catering to students
- [00:21:15.150]and giving them discounts with a university card and so on.
- [00:21:22.590]Quite important when it comes to choosing a host university,
- [00:21:27.300]of course, is the academic calendar, yeah?
- [00:21:30.900]So this is a short overview of what the calendar
- [00:21:34.200]looks like at the University of Graz.
- [00:21:37.290]Our winter semester start at,
- [00:21:42.030]the lecture period of our winter semester goes from October
- [00:21:45.600]beginning of October to end of January.
- [00:21:49.560]I mentioned our orientation days and the German course.
- [00:21:53.640]Those take place in September, so that's the month
- [00:21:56.580]before the start of the lecture period.
- [00:22:01.110]We generally expect students to arrive in September,
- [00:22:04.380]the latest in mid-September
- [00:22:06.600]simply because we find that it is very important
- [00:22:10.110]for students to have time to get settled
- [00:22:13.500]and to take care of any steps that are necessary
- [00:22:17.490]at the beginning of their stay,
- [00:22:19.260]so that once the lecture period starts,
- [00:22:21.690]they can really focus on their academic work
- [00:22:25.020]and on their studies and their student life.
- [00:22:29.310]I mentioned the German intensive course before.
- [00:22:32.010]That's a three-week course that's offered in September.
- [00:22:35.370]So students deciding to join the German course
- [00:22:39.300]will arrive at the beginning of September.
- [00:22:42.900]And, as mentioned before, it's 60 hours
- [00:22:45.570]during those three weeks and carry six ECTS.
- [00:22:49.650]So if you think of the requirement of 16 ECTS,
- [00:22:53.100]that is already almost half of what they need.
- [00:22:59.670]In the summer semester, we have our orientation days,
- [00:23:04.470]the German intensive course in February.
- [00:23:09.690]And then the lecture period goes from March
- [00:23:12.930]to the end of June usually.
- [00:23:15.150]So you see that February is basically our month
- [00:23:18.570]of our semester break between,
- [00:23:21.210]in winter and the summer semester.
- [00:23:23.880]One question we are very often asked is exam periods.
- [00:23:28.800]Now, usually for most of the courses,
- [00:23:31.710]exams will take place throughout the lecture period
- [00:23:35.490]and final exams usually at the end of the lecture period.
- [00:23:40.260]In some rare cases, there might also be exams
- [00:23:43.260]at the beginning of October, so first week of October or so.
- [00:23:47.610]Same in the summer semester,
- [00:23:50.130]usually during the lecture period, but there is cases
- [00:23:53.250]where exams will take place at the beginning of July.
- [00:23:57.000]For this reason, when we talk to students,
- [00:23:58.860]we usually advise them to make sure
- [00:24:01.170]they have flexible travel arrangements.
- [00:24:04.290]The exam dates for specific courses
- [00:24:08.100]are usually discussed in the first session of class.
- [00:24:11.580]That also gives the students an opportunity to discuss
- [00:24:16.020]the exam dates with the other colleagues in class
- [00:24:18.150]and with the professor.
- [00:24:19.950]So that's when their schedule, so to speak, is then settled.
- [00:24:24.570]And having flexible travel arrangements
- [00:24:27.390]will then allow them to, if a change is necessary,
- [00:24:30.540]to make that change at that time.
- [00:24:34.370]Okay, and that takes me to the end of my presentation,
- [00:24:39.030]just giving you my contact details
- [00:24:42.390]and, of course, opening up the session to any questions.
- [00:24:46.950]But if there are any questions later on, I would welcome.
- [00:24:53.105]If you or students would just reach out to me,
- [00:24:55.200]I'm always happy to answer any questions.
- [00:24:57.450]And let me just point out, you have my email address here
- [00:25:00.870]and most importantly also have the web link
- [00:25:04.410]of our orientation website.
- [00:25:06.630]That's the website with all the information
- [00:25:09.630]for our incoming students where they can check out
- [00:25:13.020]different aspects like courses, housing,
- [00:25:15.450]travel, and so on and so forth.
- [00:25:18.450]So thank you very much for your attention.
- [00:25:21.150]And I would just invite everybody to ask any questions
- [00:25:25.560]they might have right away.
