- [00:00:00.000]with that I want to introduce you if you're not familiar with it to the project core website
- [00:00:16.100]oh I think did I just click and take us there or was that you you did you did oh that's exciting
- [00:00:21.980]okay I didn't realize I could do other stuff we're learning to today presentation mode okay so let me
- [00:00:28.140]try to navigate through this let's see how this goes so project core is a grant-funded program
- [00:00:36.780]all of their resources are free so anything you see on here is free and what I want us to look at
- [00:00:44.960]first is the tab that says universal core and so universal core came from you know whatever
- [00:00:56.900]research study
- [00:00:58.040]that was funded to do this and their studies looked at of the core words what are the 36
- [00:01:05.420]most useful words to to communicate in daily life and so from that they came up with 36 of those
- [00:01:14.720]words which are the same ones that we just looked at in that activity that we did sorry there's a
- [00:01:22.700]little bit of a lag here as we go and what I want to show you is if you were like looking
- [00:01:27.940]for something that I'm going to print and take back tomorrow and start working on after our
- [00:01:33.080]time together today if we scroll very slow scrolling to the bottom of this they have these
- [00:01:43.740]free to print so you do not need to figure out you know like make your own board
- [00:01:47.860]come up with your own stuff these are free freely available so I'm going to come back to this 3d
- [00:01:54.280]symbol thing because I think it's really cool but I want to talk about the other things first
- [00:01:57.840]so this first one in the middle here is just a 36 location universal core communication board
- [00:02:04.980]so this is very much what we just looked like looked at in our activity and what I want to
- [00:02:12.820]point out scrolling down is that when you look at these PDF and board maker options
- [00:02:22.000]they give you a bunch of different symbols so PCS symbols versus symbol sticks
- [00:02:27.740]versus widget and so all of this vocabulary is the same word in the same location
- [00:02:34.920]but they use different symbols based on different symbol options
- [00:02:41.000]and so if you had a student who is using a device or a board
- [00:02:45.580]and you wanted just a low-tech version of that you could match the symbol
- [00:02:49.580]so we can keep the symbols the same
- [00:02:51.700]so if we just clicked on like this widget symbol one
- [00:02:57.640]I don't know
- [00:03:02.840]oh I can even get into that
- [00:03:05.880]here's here's what the widget symbols look like
- [00:03:08.780]and so the this is the exact order
- [00:03:11.180]the exact words of the cough drop app we just looked at
- [00:03:14.420]but you can see these symbols are are different
- [00:03:17.120]so these are widget symbols
- [00:03:18.660]like want get make good more
- [00:03:20.880]you can see that those symbols just look a little bit different
- [00:03:25.300]same thing if I looked at
- [00:03:27.540]the PCS symbols
- [00:03:28.920]like want get make good more
- [00:03:36.540]same words same location
- [00:03:38.700]different symbols
- [00:03:40.360]so those are all of the options there
- [00:03:43.100]with different symbols
- [00:03:45.320]so you can check those out
- [00:03:46.780]they also have a file that's a core poster
- [00:03:53.540]and so this is a great strategy
- [00:03:56.040]we have a video later of
- [00:03:57.440]how a preschool teacher or a young
- [00:04:00.160]maybe it was preschool or kindergarten
- [00:04:02.720]I'm not sure
- [00:04:03.280]young child teacher
- [00:04:04.680]anyway was using a poster in the room
- [00:04:07.880]to provide some language support and modeling
- [00:04:11.040]so there's a poster version
- [00:04:13.100]and then as we scroll down
- [00:04:15.360]remember we just talked about feature matching
- [00:04:17.360]and one of the considerations
- [00:04:19.700]is how many things can they access
- [00:04:21.420]or look at or process at a time
- [00:04:23.100]and so maybe 36 at once
- [00:04:25.320]is too much for your learner
- [00:04:27.340]so if we scroll down
- [00:04:28.520]we have nine pages with four each
- [00:04:32.020]we have four pages with nine each
- [00:04:34.640]four in a square
- [00:04:37.180]four in a line
- [00:04:38.560]all of these also have the option
- [00:04:42.900]where there's a black background
- [00:04:44.120]so if you're working with a student
- [00:04:45.420]with visual needs
- [00:04:46.380]and they need a dark background
- [00:04:47.660]those are an option
- [00:04:49.300]six pages of six
- [00:04:51.620]six in a line
- [00:04:53.080]so regardless of the best presentation method
- [00:04:56.220]for that there are a lot
- [00:04:57.240]of options here for you
- [00:04:59.240]one of the other things
- [00:05:03.100]that I think is super cool
- [00:05:04.480]is this one that's 3D symbols
- [00:05:07.280]and so this is
- [00:05:09.260]if you have access
- [00:05:11.280]to a 3D printer
- [00:05:13.540]and I'm talking
- [00:05:15.380]a vocabulary that I don't know about
- [00:05:17.160]3D printing is
- [00:05:18.840]definitely part of that
- [00:05:20.280]but if you go to these
- [00:05:22.840]they have whatever file
- [00:05:25.970]to file type that 3D printers read to 3D print all 36 of the core words.
- [00:05:34.910]So if you are working with a very hands-on learner,
- [00:05:38.050]if you're working with a learner who has a visual impairment,
- [00:05:40.790]who is blind or partially sighted,
- [00:05:43.030]then they have options that do not require visual processing.
- [00:05:48.030]It's all tactile processing.
- [00:05:51.930]And they have different, there we go.
- [00:05:56.690]So just like we talked earlier about the colors being different word classes,
- [00:06:01.610]they've also organized these 3D symbols in that way.
- [00:06:05.910]So if something's a pronoun, it's shaped like a hexagon.
- [00:06:08.750]It has a certain crosshatch texture on the edge,
- [00:06:13.250]and it's white when you 3D print it.
- [00:06:15.290]They say print this in white.
- [00:06:16.370]If something's a noun, it's shaped like a trapezoid.
- [00:06:19.310]It has horizontal wavy grooves along the edge.
- [00:06:21.910]And it's the color orange.
- [00:06:23.610]So if they have some partial sight and can see the color, great.
- [00:06:26.710]If they are beginning Braille readers, the Braille symbol is on there.
- [00:06:32.470]Or if they are not able to do either of those things yet,
- [00:06:36.390]they can base that on feeling the edges or based on the shape of those.
- [00:06:43.290]So I just think those are so cool.
- [00:06:45.830]And you can see then if we go back to,
- [00:06:50.690]this is just what they look like when they get printed.
- [00:06:53.090]And they're probably like that big, that big.
- [00:06:56.530]So this word like, it's shaped like a triangle.
- [00:07:01.270]It has the word on it.
- [00:07:02.350]It has a certain texture around the edge.
- [00:07:03.970]It has the braille.
- [00:07:04.750]And they also have like this kind of hoop thing on the top.
- [00:07:08.690]So you could string them like on a lanyard or something.
- [00:07:11.110]So even for some of our most complex or involved learners
- [00:07:15.390]or those who have different visual needs, that's an option too.
- [00:07:19.670]So I love that website.
- [00:07:21.470]There are just a ton of resources there.
- [00:07:26.330]Along with that, you can look at this communication apps
- [00:07:35.730]and speech generating devices.
- [00:07:38.050]They have universal core vocabulary keys.
- [00:07:41.750]And so these each tell you, so like, for example,
- [00:07:45.630]if you're using a VOS,
- [00:07:49.270]this is a document that will show you where you can find each
- [00:07:54.050]of these 36 core words in that program.
- [00:07:57.190]So let's see if I can get this to open.
- [00:08:02.730]Maybe.
- [00:08:05.910]Oh, I don't know what that is, Megan.
- [00:08:10.490]Sorry.
- [00:08:11.070]I clicked on the document version instead of the PDF version.
- [00:08:17.410]I bet that's not.
- [00:08:18.190]Okay.
- [00:08:18.870]Um, and so if you're using the Avaz app, um, and you're looking for the universal word
- [00:08:25.270]go, you would go to level three actions go.
- [00:08:28.730]So it tells you exactly where to find each of those court words.
- [00:08:32.110]And most of the big name, um, communication devices have this option too.
- [00:08:36.810]And finally, um, we're talking about this a little bit today, but if this is something
- [00:08:44.910]that you're like, oh, I need to, I need to learn more about this.
- [00:08:47.790]I want to learn more.
- [00:08:48.750]I want to learn more about this and how to use it.
- [00:08:50.190]Um, they also have free professional development available.
- [00:08:54.570]So they have different modules, um, about what is project core, how to use universal
- [00:09:00.910]core vocabulary, um, aided language input, which is something we're going to talk about
- [00:09:07.230]later, how to work with beginning communicators.
- [00:09:09.570]So there's all types of like more professional development.
- [00:09:12.550]If this is, um, an area that you want to learn more about specifically.
- [00:09:17.410]Great resource.
- [00:09:20.690]Great.
- [00:09:21.230]Jessica, one of the, one of the biggest barriers that we come up against, I, um, when we are
- [00:09:27.070]working to, to teach in, um, a different mode of communication is just lack of understanding.
- [00:09:34.090]And we just don't, right.
- [00:09:36.370]If, if I consider back when I went through grad school, I may have had a single course,
- [00:09:42.750]um, that helped me to understand AAC a little bit better.
- [00:09:47.130]Um, and so what an awesome resource that project core is making available.
- [00:09:54.310]And I know as an SLP, I would always prefer that my paras had additional knowledge and
- [00:10:00.330]understanding too.
- [00:10:01.230]So beautiful resource that they have provided with, with free training, free professional
- [00:10:08.810]development.
- [00:10:09.410]And for parents too, you know, so often, um, parents are like, yes, whatever you think
- [00:10:15.450]is best, uh, do it.
- [00:10:17.050]And I want to do it and I want to learn about it.
- [00:10:19.190]So, um, anything, you know, you are all very busy people as we know.
- [00:10:23.550]So anything we can give you, that's like, yes, check out this website or do this module
- [00:10:28.170]or watch this video or whatever that is, um, as a support for the other professionals you're
- [00:10:33.110]working with and the parents and the family.
- [00:10:34.910]Wonderful.
- [00:10:36.170]Thank you.
- [00:10:36.910]Thank you.
