- [00:00:00.000]and with that I want to talk about the concept of core vocabulary so you can see down on the
- [00:00:16.700]right there are three four different studies that reference core vocabulary or that tell us
- [00:00:23.720]about core vocabulary and the information here and you can see in those different
- [00:00:29.240]bodies of words essentially different people have looked at up to 450 million words so of
- [00:00:37.660]all of the words that we know in our language English has about a hundred thousand or plus words
- [00:00:44.560]and we as educated adults use about 15,000 of these words so there are words that I just have
- [00:00:52.160]never heard of before that I don't use that I don't know what they mean if somebody is in like
- [00:00:58.480]some electrical engineering field they have a whole different vocabulary than I do working in
- [00:01:03.740]an education field so as adults we use about 15,000 of these based on our our knowledge our
- [00:01:10.880]background our history our context core vocabulary studies show about 350 of these words make up
- [00:01:19.760]about 80 percent of speech samples so if you're an SLP in the group you're familiar with a I think
- [00:01:27.720]we're not going to not going to split hairs they're familiar with a language sample and so
- [00:01:33.120]of all of those words there are about 350 of them that make up 80 percent of what we say and so this
- [00:01:41.720]somehow I think there we go this bubble blue bubble here links out to a resource I'm putting
- [00:01:55.540]in the chat as well
- [00:01:56.960]to AAC language lab a list of 100 frequently used core words so I want you to open that link
- [00:02:06.700]and just take a second to look at that list and see what you observe
- [00:02:10.960]so once you've looked at that just put some um something in the chat about what is an observation
- [00:02:39.020]you make about that list of words
- [00:02:41.320]okay do not consist of nouns no nouns no nouns small connector words they're
- [00:02:56.660]small uh they're basic verbs and adjectives they're not unique or individualized words we
- [00:03:05.010]use every day and we don't think about right harder to provide visuals yes yeah literally
- [00:03:13.590]small as in most of them have less than five letters these core words yeah a lot of verbs
- [00:03:21.910]they get you what you need many are on the home page of a communication device yes core words
- [00:03:28.630]that what that activity we did was 36 core words so some of them were there
- [00:03:34.770]and i love that um harney sydney said harder to provide visuals so those are the most frequently
- [00:03:43.890]used core words things that we don't even think about um oh some of the first words we teach kids
- [00:03:50.170]to read
- [00:03:50.710]mm-hmm
- [00:03:51.370]so some of our sight words that we're learning right off the bat
- [00:03:55.610]hard to teach the meaning of thank you velvue and if they don't produce a picture or don't
- [00:04:08.890]represent a thing um and we call them abstract language they are harder to teach what that means
- [00:04:16.150]but after today you guys are gonna
- [00:04:20.970]you guys are gonna
- [00:04:21.350]it's gonna be easier for you that's right so some observations about core words um you guys
- [00:04:28.590]hit the nail on the head there are very few picture producers they're mostly pronouns
- [00:04:33.190]they're mostly verbs descriptors prepositions and very few nouns which means not a lot of
- [00:04:39.990]things that make good pictures and so when we are setting up um communication devices
- [00:04:46.210]like from scratch and we haven't heard of fringe versus core um a lot of the things we go with
- [00:04:51.330]are uh nouns because they're pictures because it's easy to go to the classroom and take a picture of
- [00:04:58.030]their favorite toy their favorite person their favorite activity their favorite sensory item
- [00:05:03.010]whatever that is and start to teach them to request for those items and that is very important
- [00:05:08.430]so please do not hear me saying that that is not important that is very important but that lets us
- [00:05:14.550]um request it doesn't let us do a lot of other things so one of the other things in all the
- [00:05:21.310]words is that they are consistent um regardless of what population we're looking at regardless of
- [00:05:27.590]what activity we're doing where we are what we're talking about what region of the country you live
- [00:05:33.350]in any of those things these are consistently the words that we use all the time
- [00:05:37.710]you
- [00:05:38.270]you
- [00:05:38.890]you
- [00:05:39.510]you
- [00:05:40.130]you
- [00:05:40.750]you
- [00:05:41.370]you
- [00:05:41.990]you
- [00:05:42.610]you
- [00:05:43.230]you
- [00:05:43.850]you
- [00:05:44.470]you
- [00:05:45.090]you
- [00:05:45.710]you
- [00:05:46.330]you
- [00:05:46.830]you
- [00:05:47.330]you
- [00:05:47.950]you
- [00:05:48.570]Thank you.
