- [00:00:00.000]And earlier I said, when we think about symbol features, what symbol does the user understand?
- [00:00:20.760]So I hope we'll see if I have enough slides here in the participant folder.
- [00:00:28.560]Megan Lantis is setting you guys up with breakout rooms.
- [00:00:31.640]So one of the things that we want to think about is that our systems, whatever we decide, should support literacy, but not require literacy to be to be used, to be navigated, to be understood.
- [00:00:44.680]And so this is a fun little activity.
- [00:00:47.260]I copied and pasted just.
- [00:00:50.480]A communication board here from a common a common name in the AAC world.
- [00:00:58.740]And I'll tell you guys what that is later.
- [00:01:01.180]But what I've done is I've taken and like blocked out the text.
- [00:01:05.960]And I hope from this activity, what it has you thinking through is how much do we rely on the text as literate individuals to expect our users to know what that symbol means?
- [00:01:20.460]So some symbols are very obvious, you know, like if you look in the bottom right, that stop sign that that communication button or selection obviously means stop.
- [00:01:32.300]So some of them are very obvious. But then when you start to look at some of these other things, it seems obvious if the text is there, but it does not seem obvious if you don't have access to the text.
- [00:01:43.880]And so in your groups, here are the instructions.
- [00:01:47.740]Megan will have you in break.
- [00:01:50.440]And I have 20 slides in here so far.
- [00:01:53.500]If we need more slides, I can sure add some.
- [00:01:56.820]You're going to look in your group at this communication board.
- [00:02:03.200]And off to the left, there are blue boxes that say word.
- [00:02:06.320]And what you're going to do is put whatever word you think that symbol is.
- [00:02:14.440]Let me go to slide one here so you can see.
- [00:02:19.680]So.
- [00:02:19.940]Here I am.
- [00:02:22.240]So if I know that probably the word in the bottom right is stop.
- [00:02:26.860]I will change the word in here to stop.
- [00:02:31.600]And just drag it over here.
- [00:02:33.820]So hopefully that updates.
- [00:02:35.960]You guys can see how that updated in Megan's screen.
- [00:02:38.100]And so you have enough words off to the left to take.
- [00:02:41.080]your best educated guess at what that symbol might mean. Change the word in the box and click
- [00:02:47.670]and drag it to the box and we'll see. We'll see how you do. So don't start yet because we don't
- [00:02:54.130]know what group you're in. I see some people going for it, but you might not be in group one. So don't
- [00:02:58.790]don't give group one the advantage if you think you know. So Megan, are you ready? Yeah. So what
- [00:03:08.670]one thing I want to say is I know there were multiple groups of you that joined as a team.
- [00:03:14.390]So I tried my very best to put you in a team together. However, there were some singletons
- [00:03:19.350]as well. So I put you in a group as well. And I wonder just thinking with all the people on this
- [00:03:27.710]slide, if each group only had like one person messing with it, if it wouldn't overwhelm the
- [00:03:32.670]slide deck instead of everyone, you know, multiple people trying to to go in and move
- [00:03:38.650]it, if that might help. But how how long do we want to have them in there, Miss Jessica,
- [00:03:43.690]in the breakout rooms? What do you think, Megan? Is this five minutes? Is this 10 minutes?
- [00:03:50.750]I think we have the luxury of 10 minutes. OK, we'll we'll kind of keep track. And if you guys
- [00:03:57.230]are getting it done sooner, then we can end sooner. But let's go with about 10 minutes.
- [00:04:02.270]OK, so to to review directions, we'll have 10 minutes. You will be put into breakout
- [00:04:08.630]rooms. Once you get to your breakout rooms, your instructions are to
- [00:04:13.530]decide who will be the person manipulating the computer. Thank you, Megan. I think that's a really
- [00:04:18.950]good point. So pick one person who will essentially be your recorder for this activity
- [00:04:24.210]that will be changing the words and moving the words. So we aren't having a bunch of people on
- [00:04:29.010]and then get as many of these done as you can in 10 minutes. And then we'll come back and kind of
- [00:04:35.310]have some discussion about about this activity.
- [00:04:38.610]In general, so I think you will just pick whatever slide your breakout room number is. So if you're
- [00:04:47.330]in breakout room seven, you will navigate to the slide that says group seven. If you're in 12,
- [00:04:52.730]you will be working on the slide that says group 12. Okay. Any questions before we do that?
- [00:04:58.510]All right. Okay. We'll see you in 10 minutes. Okay.
- [00:05:08.590]Bye.
- [00:05:10.590]Bye.
