- [00:00:00.000]I just want you to please understand, like, just like you and I can answer a question
- [00:00:15.940]in many, many, many ways, that we are going to go multimodal and we're going to accept
- [00:00:21.940]answers from our student, even if they use an AAC device, a speech-generated device or
- [00:00:27.320]sign. If they give us an answer, we're going to accept the answer if we are outside of
- [00:00:34.060]teaching or therapy time, okay? We want to accept all forms of communication.
- [00:00:40.460]I think that is a great point to start building off of because I have heard often in my time
- [00:00:51.020]observing classrooms or complex learners that they might have signed for something,
- [00:00:57.300]or said no, or vocalized, or done whatever. And then I hear somebody come back with,
- [00:01:02.960]oh, tell me on your talker. And I just think, you know, as we can treat all of our students,
- [00:01:10.760]how we would want to be treated. If I sent Megan a text about something, and she said, oh, can you
- [00:01:16.280]tell me that with your verbal language? I would be like, come on, Megan, that is annoying. And so
- [00:01:20.780]thanks for that point about what, regardless of how they're communicating, we're going to accept
- [00:01:26.960]it.
- [00:01:27.700]And we want to be working with that throughout our entire day.
- [00:01:31.660]There are specific times when we are really focusing in on teaching during our therapy time or whatever that looks
- [00:01:37.100]like. But throughout the day, we want to just build on any and all communication.
- [00:01:41.660]So this communication modality section goes through some different
- [00:01:47.040]types of communication. Some of the ones that you guys referenced in the chat will be included
- [00:01:51.880]here. So when we are talking about aided versus unaided, that's
- [00:01:56.920]what the next two slides are about. So unaided communication is something that does not
- [00:02:02.180]require any other thing. It doesn't require a device. It doesn't require a book. It doesn't
- [00:02:08.180]require a board. It doesn't require a switch. None of those things. These are just things that
- [00:02:13.140]we can do without any other type of support. So these are things like sign language. We don't
- [00:02:18.580]need anything else besides our hands for those verbal speech, finger spelling, how we're using
- [00:02:23.520]our facial expressions and body language and gestures and eye gaze and all of those nonverbal
- [00:02:28.460]things. And then as we get into aided communication, these are the things that do
- [00:02:38.040]require something else in order to communicate. So, excuse me, sorry. This might be an app that
- [00:02:47.000]you have on a tablet or a device. It might be the switch or the scanning software and button
- [00:02:55.780]access that some learners need to access their device.
- [00:02:58.440]Things that are low-tech, communication books, picture exchange systems,
- [00:03:03.180]all the way up to those high-tech dedicated devices. And so, any of our modalities could
- [00:03:09.320]include any of these things, not just for learners, but also for ourselves. So, if we're thinking
- [00:03:14.940]about I, every day, use facial expressions, potentially a little bit too much sometimes,
- [00:03:21.840]to convey a message. I use my body language, I use my vocalization, but then I am also
- [00:03:28.000]emailing and texting, and so I am all the time using both aided and unaided. So, we
- [00:03:33.440]want to support our learners in learning multiple modalities of communication, because it's
- [00:03:38.920]what we do as adults and as folks who are using all different types of communication.
