- [00:00:00.000]What is functional for our students?
- [00:00:11.600]Remember, we're going to take it beyond requesting today.
- [00:00:15.300]So when we look at the importance of functional language, we are looking at what vocabulary,
- [00:00:22.680]what words do I have within my personal dictionary to be able to maybe ask for help?
- [00:00:32.080]Should I need help?
- [00:00:33.360]So if you had a flat tire and you call 911 and say black circle, they may or may not
- [00:00:40.800]understand.
- [00:00:41.800]However, if you could say help, broken, stuck, hurt, then emergency responders might know
- [00:00:50.860]that something is wrong.
- [00:00:52.660]So we want to give them more vocabulary to be able to have functional language.
- [00:01:03.460]So when we consider functional language, we want to consider the different ways that they
- [00:01:12.480]can communicate.
- [00:01:14.160]So we can model disgust because sometimes we need to say that is gross or that smells
- [00:01:20.920]bad.
- [00:01:22.640]I'm feeling a lot of kiddos might tell us that they don't love the smells in our rooms.
- [00:01:28.840]We might need to help them to express disappointment or sadness or anger or frustration.
- [00:01:39.700]There's a lot of different ways that we can help them to be able to get their emotions
- [00:01:46.140]out in a much more effective and safe way.
- [00:01:52.620]So often I come in, I'm the behavior analyst, and so often I come in and they're like,
- [00:02:00.240]"The kid's exploding.
- [00:02:02.460]It's not safe.
- [00:02:03.460]He's throwing things or biting himself."
- [00:02:08.740]But do they have any way at all to express themselves?
- [00:02:15.100]So this is the way that they have learned.
- [00:02:17.560]This is how they finally understand me when I'm feeling frustrated.
- [00:02:22.600]Or sad.
- [00:02:23.600]Or upset.
- [00:02:24.840]Or beyond my breaking point.
- [00:02:27.600]Like I just had it.
- [00:02:29.400]And so we don't want that for them.
- [00:02:32.590]We want to build in functional communication so that they can start to have actual words to express themselves.
- [00:02:40.350]So functional is just total communication approach.
- [00:02:47.230]So everyone uses a variety of means to communicate.
- [00:02:52.630]If you consider really quick in chat, tell me at least three different ways that you have communicated today.
- [00:03:00.850]What are three different ways that you have communicated today?
- [00:03:05.790]Right now I'm speaking to you, but I also have a visual form that I am presenting to you.
- [00:03:13.170]So I have typed all of this up for you.
- [00:03:16.050]And I have sent out texts today.
- [00:03:22.030]I find myself, I don't know why, I use my hands a lot.
- [00:03:27.210]So I have a gestural going on.
- [00:03:30.330]Let me see.
- [00:03:34.770]Texts, phone calls, visuals, tone of voice, love it.
- [00:03:40.530]Facial expressions, body language, verbal texts, emails.
- [00:03:44.250]You and I are absolutely using many, many forms.
- [00:03:51.430]Right?
- [00:03:51.910]So the best forms are contextual.
- [00:03:55.690]We have to consider the situation.
- [00:03:58.090]We need to consider the person, the people that we're talking with.
- [00:04:02.310]We have to consider that environment.
- [00:04:04.190]So context, context, context.
- [00:04:06.630]Thank you.
- [00:04:08.410]Absolutely.
- [00:04:09.210]You and I use all of these different ways.
- [00:04:12.190]And we want for our students to understand that as well.
- [00:04:16.070]That it's not just AAC.
- [00:04:19.630]And it's not just.
- [00:04:21.890]Sign or, or pecs, but it's, it's about their body.
- [00:04:27.510]It's about what they're, what they're doing with their faces.
- [00:04:31.010]How are they using their hands?
- [00:04:33.110]Are we still working on their, their pitch, their vocal tone?
- [00:04:37.890]All of those things matter.
- [00:04:40.610]And the audience matters as well.
- [00:04:43.770]Thank you.
