- [00:00:00.420]Coming up on "AI In the Classroom,"
- [00:00:02.340]I learn about Grammarly.
- [00:00:04.450](upbeat music)
- [00:00:09.540]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin, a professor at UNL.
- [00:00:12.480]And I'm Williams, a grad student at UNL as well.
- [00:00:15.840]And today, we're going to talk about Grammarly.
- [00:00:18.090]I have been using Grammarly for a long time.
- [00:00:20.220]It's an AI driven application that helps,
- [00:00:26.730]surprisingly, to work on grammar.
- [00:00:29.730]My first language is not English,
- [00:00:31.650]and therefore I need some help
- [00:00:33.480]with getting my grammar correct, punctuation,
- [00:00:36.750]and making sure everything works.
- [00:00:39.690]And Grammarly has been tremendously helpful.
- [00:00:42.540]And in the last year or so,
- [00:00:44.400]Grammarly has added a few components.
- [00:00:46.620]One of them is a rewrite function
- [00:00:49.710]inside their grammar checker.
- [00:00:53.310]So you can ask to replace or to get suggestions
- [00:00:56.340]about how the text might sound better.
- [00:00:58.920]And the last one was, they've actually created a platform
- [00:01:03.360]that will allow you to track everything you're doing
- [00:01:05.880]while you're writing, so you know exactly what came from AI
- [00:01:09.450]and what came from other sources.
- [00:01:11.010]And when we think about the ethics of plagiarizing,
- [00:01:15.960]and making sure your resources are correct, and all of that,
- [00:01:18.930]that is an important thing to do.
- [00:01:22.020]I will, right now I have Grammarly deployed
- [00:01:25.770]across my devices.
- [00:01:26.790]So you can use it on your iPhone even for writing,
- [00:01:29.850]for example, an email.
- [00:01:32.070]You can have it on your Chrome.
- [00:01:35.070]Right now, in my Chrome extension.
- [00:01:36.810]So everything I write will get feedback from Grammarly.
- [00:01:40.200]So, where is Grammarly?
- [00:01:41.160]This is right now a Google doc
- [00:01:42.810]that I've created for publication.
- [00:01:45.180]Grammarly shows up in the bottom right corner.
- [00:01:47.520]So right now it's not visible,
- [00:01:49.890]but if I want to see what corrections it might have,
- [00:01:52.890]I can click,
- [00:01:53.820]and now I'm getting the things that it's finding problematic
- [00:01:57.480]on the side.
- [00:01:58.313]And you can see that it offers all of the suggestions,
- [00:02:00.540]but you can actually choose by category.
- [00:02:02.580]So you can look at correctness, at clarity, at engagement,
- [00:02:06.000]and at delivery.
- [00:02:07.230]Those are different levels of errors.
- [00:02:08.760]So obviously correctness
- [00:02:10.050]is the first thing I'm interested in.
- [00:02:12.060]And so this says, oh,
- [00:02:13.927]"Here are some things you might want to consider."
- [00:02:16.710]And this is about punctuation.
- [00:02:18.270]So I can click on it and then it shows me the sentence,
- [00:02:22.290]it shows me the sentence in the article,
- [00:02:24.930]and it shows me here.
- [00:02:26.250]Now, I can dismiss this, I can say,
- [00:02:27.877]"No, actually Grammarly, this is a nice suggestion.
- [00:02:31.380]Thank you, but no, because this is my style,
- [00:02:34.470]or something about the decision that I made."
- [00:02:36.420]Or sometimes it just doesn't understand
- [00:02:38.040]what you're trying to do.
- [00:02:39.420]But in other places I can say,
- [00:02:40.777]"Yes, please accept this correction."
- [00:02:43.050]And then it jumps to the next one,
- [00:02:44.820]and it says, "You need a comma here."
- [00:02:47.220]Now, I'm very bad at commas, although I am getting better,
- [00:02:50.040]and I'll get to in a second to why.
- [00:02:52.140]But I often says,
- [00:02:54.180]yeah, that makes sense that we need a comma here.
- [00:02:56.400]And it jumps to the next one.
- [00:02:57.600]And you can see that it goes through all of these.
- [00:02:59.760]But I can also go to clarity.
- [00:03:02.010]And what I love about this is it doesn't
- [00:03:04.230]just give you what it thinks it's wrong,
- [00:03:06.390]it's actually trying to give you another version.
- [00:03:10.350]And it can also do it for you, or it can say to you,
- [00:03:15.967]"This is a problem, try to find another way to say this."
- [00:03:18.540]So you don't have to accept Grammarly suggestions.
- [00:03:21.390]And actually, I've had my children use Grammarly
- [00:03:24.240]for some of the work they've done.
- [00:03:25.500]And their teachers always knew they've overused Grammarly
- [00:03:28.140]because their text started sounding very mechanical.
- [00:03:31.620]So if you overly on something like Grammarly,
- [00:03:34.080]you're gonna get a very mechanical text
- [00:03:35.910]that doesn't have voice.
- [00:03:37.170]You want to have voice in your writing.
- [00:03:38.880]Even academic writing needs voice.
- [00:03:41.010]So those are the things that I'm doing.
- [00:03:45.390]What are some questions you have about Grammarly?
- [00:03:48.270]So, my question has been answered already.
- [00:03:52.440]I thought it was only in the Word document,
- [00:03:55.350]but I know that now it's used in emails
- [00:03:59.160]and different documents.
- [00:04:00.240]I don't know if it can be used in PDFs as well.
- [00:04:02.820]Yes, it can be used in PDFs,
- [00:04:04.680]depending on what program you're running on this.
- [00:04:08.280]You also have a plagiarism and AI checker
- [00:04:11.760]that tries to tell you what text sounds like AI.
- [00:04:14.850]It does not necessarily mean that it was produced by AI.
- [00:04:17.790]And we know that most of AI detectors are not very good.
- [00:04:21.390]They tend to over catch people whose second language
- [00:04:24.480]is English, because they tend to write in formats
- [00:04:28.320]and in ways that seem AI like.
- [00:04:31.470]And it also sometimes under catches people
- [00:04:33.780]who are actually using AI.
- [00:04:35.100]So they're not very good.
- [00:04:36.480]But it does tell you, for example,
- [00:04:38.490]where you might have missed,
- [00:04:40.110]where you're quoting and you might have missed mentioning
- [00:04:43.800]a source.
- [00:04:44.670]So it goes through the text, it analyzes the text,
- [00:04:47.730]and it tells you where it thinks you have done those things.
- [00:04:51.090]So in that way, it's really powerful.
- [00:04:53.460]So you can say, you can see for example,
- [00:04:56.370]oops, this text reminds us of, right, this piece of text.
- [00:05:02.760]And you look at this text and you're saying,
- [00:05:04.657]"Yeah, I don't think that's in any way important here,
- [00:05:09.360]because I do have a citation here.
- [00:05:12.000]So I have given a source for this,
- [00:05:15.450]I'm feeling very confident."
- [00:05:16.830]But in other cases,
- [00:05:17.880]it might point out to something that you're like,
- [00:05:19.717]"Oh yeah, I simply forgot to include the source."
- [00:05:23.040]So it's another way to get a lot of information there.
- [00:05:27.720]And as I said, it can also suggest more complicated rewrites
- [00:05:33.150]as part of this.
- [00:05:35.550]So for example, you can choose to review your text,
- [00:05:43.560]and then it makes AI based suggestions.
- [00:05:47.610]Here, there's too much text for it to analyze,
- [00:05:50.220]so it's having a little bit of a problem focusing on this.
- [00:05:53.820]You need to select a much smaller piece of text
- [00:05:55.980]and then use the AI.
- [00:05:58.770]What other questions do you have about Grammarly?
- [00:06:01.170]Yeah, so basically, I don't have any question for now, so.
- [00:06:05.130]All right, apparently I'm very clear. (laughs)
- [00:06:09.750]I think Grammarly is a great way to use AI.
- [00:06:13.020]Now, if you're using it,
- [00:06:14.640]or if you know your students are using it,
- [00:06:16.890]one of the things that I would urge you to do
- [00:06:19.650]is using the reports.
- [00:06:22.950]And so Grammarly will produce a weekly report
- [00:06:26.220]about your most common mistakes.
- [00:06:27.900]And what you want to encourage students to do
- [00:06:30.330]is start learning from their mistakes.
- [00:06:31.860]So me, as I have used Grammarly,
- [00:06:34.383]I've used Grammarly now for over three years.
- [00:06:37.320]I started seeing what are the patterns of my mistakes
- [00:06:40.110]and I stopped making them.
- [00:06:41.820]Because I've seen them repeatedly, I'm like,
- [00:06:44.347]"Oh, this is where I always forget to put a comma,
- [00:06:48.360]and I can start putting the comma there."
- [00:06:51.120]So it is about doing error analysis,
- [00:06:55.380]and starting to learn and not just rely on it
- [00:07:00.120]as something that will always fix everything I do.
- [00:07:03.060]Yeah.
- [00:07:04.290]It is a way to start thinking about what are the patterns
- [00:07:07.170]of my mistakes, and therefore,
- [00:07:08.790]how can I learn to not do them again?
- [00:07:12.013](upbeat music)
- [00:07:13.590]So today on "AI In the Classroom,"
- [00:07:16.230]we talked about Grammarly and how you can use it.
- [00:07:18.990]And we'll see you next time.
