- [00:00:00.000]Coming up, welcome to "AI In The Classroom."
- [00:00:02.631](upbeat music)
- [00:00:07.890]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin,
- [00:00:09.810]and this is, "AI In The Classroom."
- [00:00:11.670]It's a new show that Tech Edge is having
- [00:00:14.580]because we think AI is the next big thing,
- [00:00:17.580]whether we think it's good or bad,
- [00:00:19.800]whether you are wondering if and how
- [00:00:23.250]and when it's going to come into your classroom.
- [00:00:25.500]We're gonna explore this together.
- [00:00:27.000]We intend to make fairly short shows under 15 minutes,
- [00:00:30.750]trying to keep it to one or two things every time,
- [00:00:34.125]making sure that you are informed and you know a little bit
- [00:00:38.580]more about AI every time you come.
- [00:00:40.530]So if people say you need to know more about AI
- [00:00:43.830]and bring it into your classroom
- [00:00:45.210]with the source for that information.
- [00:00:47.670]And let's start with a big distinction that I like to make
- [00:00:51.480]and that is there are two potential uses for AI.
- [00:00:56.430]One of them is in learning.
- [00:00:58.230]This is actually the more complicated one
- [00:01:00.450]and we'll talk about this as we're talking
- [00:01:03.000]about different opportunities and different applications
- [00:01:05.940]of "AI In The Classroom."
- [00:01:07.170]And the easier one is what we're seeing mostly happen
- [00:01:10.350]in schools and that is to use AI
- [00:01:12.240]to do the other tasks of teaching,
- [00:01:14.670]whether it's lesson planning, in some cases,
- [00:01:17.910]grading, in some cases, just paperwork.
- [00:01:21.300]Those are things that can be done fairly easily with AI
- [00:01:23.910]and just reduce the load on a teacher
- [00:01:26.220]so they can focus on the teaching
- [00:01:28.380]and learning that happens in the classroom.
- [00:01:30.060]But as I said, the teaching and learning
- [00:01:32.070]is where most of the promise is.
- [00:01:33.870]It's also where it gets more complicated.
- [00:01:37.650]It is really important that I send this message.
- [00:01:40.680]We're not trying to say you've gotta use AI today
- [00:01:43.800]with your students.
- [00:01:44.820]What we're trying to say is you've got to start
- [00:01:47.430]understanding what AI can and can't do.
- [00:01:50.550]Play with it and start seeing what opportunities might be.
- [00:01:54.330]You can't wait for it because it is here,
- [00:01:57.330]but you need to be aware of who your students are,
- [00:02:01.020]what devices they have, what access they have to start
- [00:02:03.660]judging where it can come in.
- [00:02:05.400]And of course, you've got to know your local policies,
- [00:02:08.130]whether it's a school, a university,
- [00:02:10.080]or even informal education where you have to ask
- [00:02:13.567]the community and parents what they think about AI
- [00:02:17.460]and how much are they willing for their kids to use it.
- [00:02:20.820]Finally, I do want to say that we are highly aware
- [00:02:24.270]of the ethics of AI and it's always top of mind
- [00:02:27.690]and it needs to be on your mind as well.
- [00:02:29.790]There are some concerns that you have to really worry about.
- [00:02:32.700]The first one is privacy.
- [00:02:34.290]And when we are dealing with students, their information,
- [00:02:37.410]their data, we want to make sure
- [00:02:39.750]that that doesn't become common knowledge.
- [00:02:42.120]And we know for example, that in some of the models
- [00:02:45.300]for generative AI, the information
- [00:02:48.090]is used to keep training the model.
- [00:02:50.816]That means that anything you put in there is now
- [00:02:54.210]on that company's that is part of that company's data.
- [00:02:58.410]That means you can't put anything that is identifiable
- [00:03:01.920]about students and you have to check
- [00:03:04.320]what your local policies are about using that for students
- [00:03:10.013]or anything that has to do with students.
- [00:03:12.570]We have clear legislation under FERPA
- [00:03:14.940]and under other legislation
- [00:03:18.641]that may be different in different states,
- [00:03:20.790]but you have to consider that.
- [00:03:22.410]So privacy is the first one. The second one is copyright.
- [00:03:25.200]We are worried about what have they used
- [00:03:27.555]as part of their training and you can check
- [00:03:30.420]with different models what they've used
- [00:03:33.120]and how they've used it.
- [00:03:34.710]And we are waiting for the courts to resolve that.
- [00:03:37.590]But there's definitely a concern, especially with visual AI
- [00:03:41.010]and the work they've done with people's art
- [00:03:44.266]without actually asking for permission.
- [00:03:47.070]Energy use is another concern,
- [00:03:48.869]although that has been dropping off really, really quickly.
- [00:03:52.530]The first few models were very expensive
- [00:03:54.660]and high energy in conduct consumption.
- [00:03:58.740]That has been going down, but that's still a concern
- [00:04:01.290]because we know that all those data centers are expensive.
- [00:04:05.130]They produce a lot of heat
- [00:04:06.720]and they are not normally distributed around the country.
- [00:04:09.900]They tend to be around communities
- [00:04:13.200]that usually suffer from poverty
- [00:04:15.480]and from other ways of being taken advantage of.
- [00:04:22.230]So we are concerned about that and of course
- [00:04:25.710]really concerned about the unforeseen consequences of AI.
- [00:04:30.510]So there are some things that we know are going to happen.
- [00:04:33.240]My analog is usually social media.
- [00:04:36.090]We were super excited about social media when it showed up,
- [00:04:39.060]but now that we know what are some of the outcomes
- [00:04:41.700]of social media with encouraging extremism,
- [00:04:44.814]with the impact on teen mental health,
- [00:04:49.710]we have a more balanced view of what social media can do,
- [00:04:54.420]and what might be the dangers.
- [00:04:56.160]We don't know what the in those impacts
- [00:05:00.891]of AI are going to be, but we know they are going to come
- [00:05:04.380]and we need to be wary
- [00:05:06.000]and consider those and check all the time.
- [00:05:09.750]So it's going to be a really exciting season
- [00:05:12.000]in "AI In The Classroom," and I'll see you next time.
- [00:05:14.531](upbeat music)
