- [00:00:15.000]Inclusion to me means ensuring that students have the resources to facilitate their academic success and well-being on campus.
- [00:00:22.000]Inclusion means to me that everybody should not just have a seat at the table, but the systems that have been put in place to restrict access for certain people,
- [00:00:32.000]especially marginalized groups of people, should have not just more access, but easier access.
- [00:00:38.000]Inclusion is having differences, but being able to connect with other people, being in groups, and being able to support others.
- [00:00:46.000]For me, inclusion has been a big aspect of my life, being someone who was adopted into a white family.
- [00:00:52.000]And being told I would be different my whole life.
- [00:00:55.000]So I find inclusion to be valuable in order to make connections and friends.
- [00:00:59.000]Inclusion means being accepting and open to all people, not in spite of their background, but because of it.
- [00:01:07.000]And I think just being open to learning more about who other people are, what makes them them,
- [00:01:12.000]and then just caring about these people and recognizing the value that their identities bring and their experiences bring.
- [00:01:18.000]And what inclusion means to me is when everyone is thriving,
- [00:01:22.000]in joy, abundance, and possibility, especially indigenous folks, black folks,
- [00:01:27.000]migrants, Latinx folks, queer, trans, and two-spirit folks, and other minoritized
- [00:01:32.000]people who have been systematically excluded and pushed out of these spaces,
- [00:01:37.000]such as higher education. It's when everyone is affirmed for
- [00:01:42.000]their humanity and celebrated for their unique experiences and insights and knowledges
- [00:01:47.000]that they bring. I've always appreciated how Audre Lorde puts it.
- [00:01:52.000]She says that we're creating justice between us, and that's what inclusion means to me.
- [00:01:59.000]Fifteen weeks ago when I first started this course, I didn't really think much about inclusion.
- [00:02:04.000]I never realized how important it was to be a part of something bigger than yourself and actually connect with a group.
- [00:02:10.000]And today, I would say that inclusion means to me,
- [00:02:14.380]more than just to like notice someone's differences and accept them but more so
- [00:02:19.900]actively going out of your way to make somebody feel welcome and giving
- [00:02:26.060]everyone a place to like you know like we're all together now we've taken a
- [00:02:31.420]semester so to soak in all of this new knowledge I understand how important it
- [00:02:37.240]is to be included and to find a way to connect and make like connections that
- [00:02:44.140]will last what you do as your life before this class my parents were always
- [00:02:47.920]just like oh just include everyone make sure things included like if you're
- [00:02:52.120]doing group project no one has a partner like just include them make everyone
- [00:02:56.020]feel welcome but after taking this class professor dance said that our
- [00:03:00.180]perspectives were going to change and I was like oh well we'll see like how much
- [00:03:04.960]it changed but it really did change a lot and we had this one guest speaker
- [00:03:08.920]that talked about like white privilege privilege and things like that and just
- [00:03:12.700]kind of like when you look
- [00:03:13.900]out into a crowd you know that there's going to be people of your race and not
- [00:03:18.640]everyone can be like that so just having an open mind like that I think adds on
- [00:03:23.200]to how inclusion is different for other people and how you can include others by
- [00:03:29.220]not just making them feel welcome by just understanding others and what
- [00:03:33.140]inclusion means to me pretty much the welcoming of everybody no matter their
- [00:03:36.860]race their identity their gender whatever they identify as welcoming them
- [00:03:41.020]welcoming them with all with open arms and treating
- [00:03:43.660]everyone the same it means teaching a class like this with a diverse group of
- [00:03:47.740]students and hearing their stories and also
- [00:03:51.420]sharing with them the complexities of the different
- [00:03:55.740]topics that we teach the different ways that people have
- [00:03:58.460]been historically excluded and so inclusion means to me
- [00:04:02.700]understanding that complex history so i enjoy listening to my students
- [00:04:09.340]teaching my students having conversations in class and you've heard
- [00:04:13.420]what my students think about what inclusion means to them
- [00:04:25.500]Thank you.
