- [00:00:00.100]Nebraska cattlemen are getting a helping hand from UNL's Beef Extension team.
- [00:00:04.720]From calving season support to grazing management and herd health,
- [00:00:08.920]that program works to ensure ranchers have the tools to succeed.
- [00:00:12.660]Extension educator Randy Sainer joined us now for a closer look.
- [00:00:16.660]Randy, good to have you with us.
- [00:00:18.280]So it is so clear that Nebraska's resources give cattle producers a big advantage,
- [00:00:23.300]but ranching still isn't without its challenges.
- [00:00:26.440]How does UNL support producers in managing their operations?
- [00:00:29.740]So Nebraska cattle producers work really hard every day,
- [00:00:36.460]and UNL, we're proud to support them with research, education,
- [00:00:41.020]and hands-on resources to help them stay ahead.
- [00:00:43.040]And, of course, we know that weather always plays a big factor for ranchers,
- [00:00:47.760]especially with drought conditions in parts of that state.
- [00:00:50.680]Let's talk a little bit about how UNL is helping cattle producers
- [00:00:54.260]navigate these challenges.
- [00:00:55.560]So our goal is just to provide science-based,
- [00:00:59.560]based management strategies that help producers improve efficiency,
- [00:01:03.440]profitability, and sustainability.
- [00:01:04.600]We offer several resources, including research on drought management,
- [00:01:08.980]feed efficiency, and genetics to help producers make data-driven decisions.
- [00:01:14.540]Beef Podcast and the Beef Watch newsletter are monthly updates
- [00:01:20.700]on market trends, nutrition, and production practices.
- [00:01:23.500]We have the Nebraska Ranch Practicum that talks about genetics.
- [00:01:27.160]We also talk about managing forage.
- [00:01:29.540]And some drought in that also.
- [00:01:31.180]And that's getting ready to start next year.
- [00:01:33.160]So applications for the next session are opening soon, if you're interested.
- [00:01:36.320]We have field days, webinars, workshops, where cattle producers can learn the latest and best practices in animal health, pasture management, and economic forecasting.
- [00:01:47.210]Our educators and specialists are available across the state, working directly with ranchers and feeders to provide real-world solutions for today's challenges.
- [00:01:56.730]And we know that Nebraska, of course, is a big cattle state, and so this isn't happening just right there in Lincoln.
- [00:02:02.670]You're helping producers all across the state, right?
- [00:02:04.970]Yes, and so like we have the Midwest Practicum, and I mentioned the Ranch Practicum.
- [00:02:10.490]Well, the Midwest is for the eastern part of the state, and it's just started.
- [00:02:13.810]It's a new program we started.
- [00:02:15.070]We talked a little bit about drought, but, again, we're looking at decision management tools that will help producers adjust stocking rates
- [00:02:24.210]because we look like we could have a really dry summer.
- [00:02:27.430]And we've also looked at research on alternative forages and grazing systems to ensure that they have an option if the grass is limited
- [00:02:34.870]and we also do confinement cow feeding programs so if they have to confine those cows, they can.
- [00:02:39.870]At UNL, we're just closely working with producers to develop those practical research-based solutions
- [00:02:44.750]to keep operations both profitable, economically responsible.
- [00:02:48.330]Such a great, well-rounded program.
- [00:02:51.430]Now, for producers watching today who want to take advantage of a lot of these resources, where can they go for more information?
- [00:02:57.630]They can go to our beef.unl.edu website, which contains all our information, and on social media, they can go at UNL Beef.
- [00:03:04.770]All right. We'll be looking for that. That's Nebraska Livestock Systems Program Leader Randy Saner. Thank you so much for joining us today.
