- [00:00:00.000]Well, the UNL School of Natural Resources is training the next generation of conservationists
- [00:00:05.980]and land managers, giving students hands-on experience in livestock and wildlife stewardship.
- [00:00:11.080]Department Head Larkin Powell joins us now for an update. Larkin, thanks for being here.
- [00:00:15.820]Let's start with a little background on the program's mission and really the opportunities
- [00:00:20.160]for your students. Sure, it's a pleasure to be with you this morning. Our School of Natural
- [00:00:26.320]Resources is all about first understanding and then managing our natural world. And so
- [00:00:32.700]we have 85 faculty, that's a big place, 400 students in our program, and they're focused
- [00:00:38.620]on everything from climate to water and soils and then biodiversity of our fisheries and
- [00:00:44.720]wildlife and plants in that natural world. And in Nebraska, that context is our working
- [00:00:50.660]landscapes. So we try to get students out as quickly as possible away from the classroom
- [00:00:56.040]out into the field to see what kind of practical experiences they can get to help them with
- [00:01:01.840]their careers. That is so, so important, right? Get out of the classroom. And boy, it sounds
- [00:01:06.420]like you guys cover a wide range of topics and subjects, but standout programs, maybe
- [00:01:11.880]that make this program maybe more unique. Sure. A couple of things. Right now, we're
- [00:01:18.840]excited to launch a new certificate, a wildlife habitat management certificate. The unique thing about this,
- [00:01:25.760]credential is it's a standalone 18 credit credential. And that's something that our students can take as
- [00:01:32.420]they go through their program, work that into their degree for their graduation requirements. But
- [00:01:36.640]but it's also something that a professional can do
- [00:01:39.270]once they've graduated, they can come back,
- [00:01:41.470]rather than do a whole second degree program,
- [00:01:44.070]they can come back just for that 18 credit credential
- [00:01:46.870]to add to their portfolio.
- [00:01:48.610]And we hope that that's useful to people working
- [00:01:51.470]in agencies like USDA, NRCS,
- [00:01:54.010]or our state wildlife agency, for example.
- [00:01:57.610]- That's incredible. - Second thing
- [00:01:58.450]that I'd like to emphasize this morning,
- [00:02:00.530]we've got a new regional and conservation,
- [00:02:04.290]regional and community forestry program.
- [00:02:06.530]And that program focuses on our students
- [00:02:09.430]that are working with cities
- [00:02:11.130]and focusing our urban greenscapes.
- [00:02:14.430]- So really, there's a lot here
- [00:02:16.030]for people that you said working in urban landscapes.
- [00:02:18.410]And this school really sounds like it offers
- [00:02:20.470]just incredible experiences,
- [00:02:22.070]a little more for maybe somebody on the fence
- [00:02:24.050]and watching right now and thinking about
- [00:02:26.250]entering into the School of Natural Resources,
- [00:02:28.650]the hands-on experience.
- [00:02:30.990]That really is, I think, a big selling point
- [00:02:33.890]as to what you guys do.
- [00:02:34.890]Maybe you speak a little bit more about that.
- [00:02:36.430]Sure.
- [00:02:38.270]It's something that we think a lot about.
- [00:02:40.330]We have six study abroad trips, for example,
- [00:02:43.170]that our faculty have created.
- [00:02:45.210]They go to countries like Namibia, Puerto Rico,
- [00:02:48.410]part of the United States, obviously, Bahamas.
- [00:02:51.210]But we're trying to get students out there
- [00:02:53.010]for those experiences.
- [00:02:54.450]That is incredible.
- [00:02:55.250]Where can people go to learn more, Larkin?
- [00:02:58.450]Let's have them go to snr.unl.edu,
- [00:03:01.230]and we'd like to engage anybody.
- [00:03:03.030]Wow, it's so incredible.
- [00:03:04.390]Great information.
- [00:03:05.250]Thank you so much.
- [00:03:06.330]Thank you to all that you do there.
- [00:03:08.570]Larkin Powell with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:03:10.810]School of Natural Resources.
- [00:03:12.210]Great stuff.
