[00:00:00.000]Research from black light traps across Nebraska has several decades worth of data on the western bean cutworm and how the pest's flight patterns are getting longer.
[00:00:09.300]From the mid-80s to the 2020s, Julie Peterson, Nebraska Extension entomologist, explains more on the lengthening flight affecting crops.
[00:00:18.220]Moths coming in and laying more eggs like ongoing later in the season are harder to control.
[00:00:25.580]There's not like one perfect time to spray as much anymore, and then the kind of the flight patterns of that insect,
[00:00:34.000]some things with timing with insecticide applications and using economic thresholds and scouting
[00:00:40.920]to help make decisions about, you know, economically beneficial treatments for this insect pest.
[00:00:47.720]Those later laid egg masses can come in and still cause injury to the crop.
[00:00:53.280]But we're optimistic because that is something that our natural enemies, our good beneficial insects that are out there like lady beetles, can help with.
[00:01:03.570]So we're recommending in a lot of cases that it will give you an economic return to spend a little more money on an insecticide like chlorantraniliprol that's more selective for your pest.
[00:01:18.430]It works really well at killing western bean cutworm, but it's not as toxic to lady beetles and other beneficial insects.
[00:01:24.430]So then you can keep your beneficials in the field.
[00:01:27.330]They can help you to eat and kind of clean up those later laid egg masses that come in from those kind of later flying moths.
