- [00:00:01.201]Hey, everybody.
- [00:00:01.685]Interim Dean Nick Pace here.
- [00:00:03.186]And I am with Kamryn Buchanan.
- [00:00:06.306]Hello, Kamryn. Hello.
- [00:00:08.191]Third year PhD student
- [00:00:09.909]in Counseling Psychology.
- [00:00:11.728]Yes.
- [00:00:12.445]And where's home?
- [00:00:13.880]Omaha, Nebraska.
- [00:00:15.031]Okay.
- [00:00:15.448]And you were here as an undergrad?
- [00:00:17.967]Yes.
- [00:00:18.418]And stuck around.
- [00:00:19.252]I did.
- [00:00:19.886]Awesome. Love it.
- [00:00:20.970]Why did you stay?
- [00:00:22.255]I made really great connections.
- [00:00:24.140]And then I had a professor
- [00:00:25.709]who showed me
- [00:00:27.093]the ropes of the PhD program
- [00:00:29.012]and master's program here.
- [00:00:30.747]So I just felt like
- [00:00:32.766]there were a lot of people
- [00:00:33.533]who wanted me to succeed and stay around.
- [00:00:36.052]And my family's here, too, so.
- [00:00:38.938]Love it.
- [00:00:39.989]And so there's something else
- [00:00:42.058]that, folks,
- [00:00:43.043]something else about you
- [00:00:44.461]that folks might recognize you
- [00:00:45.995]from or be interested in.
- [00:00:47.664]Tell us that side of Kamryn.
- [00:00:49.182]Yes.
- [00:00:49.799]So I decided to do
- [00:00:51.201]Miss Nebraska USA, last year.
- [00:00:53.937]It was my first pageant ever
- [00:00:56.122]to compete in and I ended up winning.
- [00:00:58.708]So I'm currently the Miss Nebraska USA for 2024. And congratulations.
- [00:01:02.395]So, Thank you.
- [00:01:03.346]how does somebody just say,
- [00:01:05.965]you know what,
- [00:01:06.416]I think I'm going to give this a try
- [00:01:07.650]and then win it.
- [00:01:08.785]Is that unusual?
- [00:01:10.620]I mean be chosen first time through? I would say so.
- [00:01:13.373]Yes, I would say so.
- [00:01:14.574]There's a lot of preparation
- [00:01:15.742]that goes into it.
- [00:01:17.610]Former Miss Nebraska USA
- [00:01:19.846]was Mimi Wood
- [00:01:20.964]she was my freshman year
- [00:01:22.048]roommate here in the Suites.
- [00:01:23.666]Okay.
- [00:01:24.267]And she came to me,
- [00:01:25.502]and she thought I'd be a good
- [00:01:27.904]candidate to compete.
- [00:01:30.240]And so I listened to her
- [00:01:31.791]and here we are. So that's where it started.
- [00:01:33.393]Yes.
- [00:01:33.877]Okay.
- [00:01:34.594]So what's the what's the intersection
- [00:01:39.082]of your PhD program and
- [00:01:42.352]your experiences as Miss Nebraska.
- [00:01:44.404]And
- [00:01:46.473]five years from now, ten years from now,
- [00:01:48.241]what do you want to be doing?
- [00:01:49.826]Women's empowerment.
- [00:01:51.177]I want to focus on
- [00:01:52.712]women's mental health,
- [00:01:53.980]women's physical health
- [00:01:55.365]and women's research.
- [00:01:57.300]So I plan to open my private practice
- [00:01:59.752]in counseling psychology
- [00:02:01.554]and do the research
- [00:02:03.223]and help women with confidence,
- [00:02:05.525]physical health, mental health.
- [00:02:07.060]Okay.
- [00:02:07.794]And if
- [00:02:09.696]if you were talking to your former self
- [00:02:13.817]would, would that be right in line
- [00:02:16.052]with what you've always kind of
- [00:02:17.187]been thinking about?
- [00:02:17.971]Or is that like, wow,
- [00:02:18.922]how did I end up here?
- [00:02:20.273]Yes, I think my former self
- [00:02:22.325]would appreciate my current self and
- [00:02:25.495]would tell her a lot of things
- [00:02:26.646]that she would wanted to here.
- [00:02:28.081]Just keep going. You'll figure it out.
- [00:02:29.916]Okay, so the Miss Nebraska
- [00:02:32.452]might possibly be a surprise
- [00:02:34.504]to your former self,
- [00:02:35.572]but not the direction
- [00:02:36.890]that you're using
- [00:02:38.525]Yes. your studies and your experiences,
- [00:02:40.360]as Miss Nebraska to know. Yes.
- [00:02:42.729]Yes, I grew up modeling,
- [00:02:44.480]so I started modeling when I was 12.
- [00:02:46.733]Okay.
- [00:02:47.150]So I had the walk
- [00:02:48.868]and some things that I needed
- [00:02:50.136]for Miss Nebraska.
- [00:02:51.387]But pageantry was never something
- [00:02:53.556]I thought about.
- [00:02:54.440]Okay. Isn't it funny how things turn out?
- [00:02:56.926]Yes, yes.
- [00:02:58.261]A lot of things came together,
- [00:02:59.762]which is why I think I'm in the
- [00:03:01.581]position I am in today.
- [00:03:03.032]Okay.
- [00:03:04.834]What.
- [00:03:05.752]Are there specific things
- [00:03:07.353]that have,
- [00:03:08.104]like, pulled you in to women's,
- [00:03:12.375]Women's health,
- [00:03:13.026]Women's mental health that,
- [00:03:16.296]you know, are front and center for you,
- [00:03:18.831]or can you, Yeah.
- [00:03:19.832]can you pinpoint how that field
- [00:03:23.870]and that need
- [00:03:24.988]kind of grabbed a hold of you?
- [00:03:26.639]Yes, I think I was always
- [00:03:27.891]surrounded with women.
- [00:03:29.092]My family is all women.
- [00:03:30.593]I have one male cousin.
- [00:03:32.161]Okay.
- [00:03:32.495]And then coming into psychology,
- [00:03:35.665]there's a huge lack and limitation
- [00:03:38.067]in research and women
- [00:03:39.786]knowing things about their body
- [00:03:41.271]and understanding things.
- [00:03:42.755]And so that's kind of where those
- [00:03:45.291]worlds merged for me
- [00:03:46.826]was to build
- [00:03:47.710]that understanding for everyone.
- [00:03:49.829]Awesome.
- [00:03:50.697]How.
- [00:03:52.148]Best thing about your experiences
- [00:03:55.885]in the Department of Educational Psychology
- [00:03:58.137]and or the
- [00:03:59.005]College of Education and Human Sciences?
- [00:04:00.890]What, what stands out?
- [00:04:01.975]What would you tell other,
- [00:04:04.794]current students advice,
- [00:04:06.296]perspectives students?
- [00:04:07.313]What would.
- [00:04:08.681]What's important for them to hear from you?
- [00:04:10.433]You're never alone.
- [00:04:11.584]There's always someone who's been through
- [00:04:13.202]what you're going through
- [00:04:14.370]or knows how to get through
- [00:04:15.421]what you're going through.
- [00:04:16.656]I think with advising
- [00:04:18.091]and the people around you
- [00:04:19.592]in that environment, it's
- [00:04:20.960]very enriched
- [00:04:22.312]with people
- [00:04:23.429]wanting to support you and get you where
- [00:04:25.865]you want to be.
- [00:04:27.533]Okay.
- [00:04:31.554]Anything specific that
- [00:04:32.939]you would like to tell somebody
- [00:04:34.524]in my role
- [00:04:35.391]as interim dean
- [00:04:36.426]or your faculty members or.
- [00:04:39.762]What, what should we know?
- [00:04:41.247]And what should we be thinking about?
- [00:04:42.682]What do you need us to hear?
- [00:04:44.901]That our programs
- [00:04:45.935]doing a really good job,
- [00:04:47.403]and we're working with what we have.
- [00:04:50.523]We have a clinic
- [00:04:51.541]that we would love students to come to
- [00:04:54.560]and would love to advertise that more,
- [00:04:58.014]just in our environment,
- [00:04:59.882]Okay. I think
- [00:05:00.783]So the counseling and psych
- [00:05:02.635]counseling and school psych clinic,
- [00:05:04.370]first floor, garden level
- [00:05:06.105]of Teachers College Hall. Yes.
- [00:05:07.623]That can come down, access Yes.
- [00:05:09.509]services, support,
- [00:05:12.295]that might be an under
- [00:05:13.529]the radar opportunity
- [00:05:14.998]for lots of people on campus,
- [00:05:16.733]I’m thinking. Yes.
- [00:05:17.550]In my undergrad experience,
- [00:05:18.868]I feel like I might have looked it over,
- [00:05:22.722]or brushed through pamphlets or things
- [00:05:24.741]that have it in it, but yes,
- [00:05:27.060]making it known and visible
- [00:05:28.561]for people to use as a resource.
- [00:05:30.747]Very cool.
- [00:05:33.066]When you finish,
- [00:05:34.350]you want to start your practice.
- [00:05:36.803]Where’s that going to be?
- [00:05:37.804]Is that in Nebraska
- [00:05:38.721]for a Nebraska person, or might we?
- [00:05:43.042]I would like to venture off,
- [00:05:44.610]but Nebraska is my home roots.
- [00:05:46.746]My family's here
- [00:05:47.997]and a lot of my schooling has been here,
- [00:05:50.883]so I feel like I owe it to Nebraska
- [00:05:52.702]to stick around. But we'll see. Maybe
- [00:05:55.671]Maybe I’ll end up somewhere warmer.
- [00:05:57.590]Okay.
- [00:05:58.441]As we head into fall.
- [00:05:59.759]It's looking a little gray out there.
- [00:06:01.461]Yeah.
- [00:06:04.313]Letter.
- [00:06:04.864]This so
- [00:06:06.833]Letter to your five year old self
- [00:06:09.902]on the cusp of
- [00:06:11.971]finishing your PhD here
- [00:06:13.506]within the next year or so,
- [00:06:15.308]mm-hmm hopefully.
- [00:06:17.343]What would you tell that little girl
- [00:06:19.679]about the distance traveled,
- [00:06:21.981]about Miss Nebraska,
- [00:06:23.883]and the things that probably you
- [00:06:27.086]maybe couldn't have invisioned
- [00:06:28.621]at that point.
- [00:06:30.006]I would tell her, like,
- [00:06:31.407]look within, the powers within you.
- [00:06:35.311]Don't make anything external
- [00:06:38.848]as big as it should be
- [00:06:40.500]or bigger than yourself,
- [00:06:42.385]because you'll get through
- [00:06:43.386]a lot of things
- [00:06:44.003]turning inward
- [00:06:44.871]and figuring out who you are.
- [00:06:47.123]Nice.
- [00:06:48.357]Talk a lot about impacting
- [00:06:50.443]human condition in our college,
- [00:06:52.345]and I think you just you just nailed it.
- [00:06:54.847]Yeah.
- [00:06:55.248]Awesome.
- [00:06:55.798]Thanks for spending some time with me.
- [00:06:57.500]Yeah,
- [00:06:58.351]I normally carry around
- [00:06:59.519]Dairy Store ice cream tickets
- [00:07:01.220]and I'm fresh out today.
- [00:07:02.488]But I'm going on video Oh no.
- [00:07:03.973]and saying I'm good for it.
- [00:07:04.974]Okay.
- [00:07:05.541]So you will get your ticket.
- [00:07:06.576]Thank you.
- [00:07:07.176]Awesome. Thank you so much.
- [00:07:08.561]Yes.
