- [00:00:01.940]Winter is here, and while the cold weather may have you tempted to hibernate,
- [00:00:04.940]it doesn’t mean you have to hit pause on your fitness goals.
- [00:00:07.900]I’m Brittany Spieker, your Food, Nutrition, and Health Extension Educator
- [00:00:11.440]covering Cherry, Brown, Rock, Keya Paha, Holt, and Boyd Counties,
- [00:00:15.240]and I’m here with some easy and practical ways to stay active,
- [00:00:18.680]even during our long, cold Nebraska winters.
- [00:00:21.880]Now when the weather keeps you indoors,
- [00:00:23.670]there are still plenty of ways to stay active.
- [00:00:25.880]Local community or fitness centers may offer indoor walking areas,
- [00:00:29.280]gym access, or fitness classes – like my tai chi for health sessions.
- [00:00:33.880]Alternatively, you can create a home workout space with a yoga mat,
- [00:00:37.880]dumbbells, or even using your own body weight.
- [00:00:40.560]Thank you, gravity!
- [00:00:42.920]But if you don’t mind a little fresh air, winter is the perfect time
- [00:00:46.060]to enjoy some of Nebraska’s beautiful outdoors –
- [00:00:48.440]just be sure to dress appropriately!
- [00:00:51.180]A brisk walk through the winter wonderland or a snowshoe trek
- [00:00:54.460]can be just as effective as a gym workout.
- [00:00:57.120]But you know, Nebraska's weather can change quickly,
- [00:01:01.220]so make sure to layer up with moisture-wicking clothing, wear those warm socks,
- [00:01:04.800]and invest in a good pair of winter hiking boots.
- [00:01:07.760]But want to make it even more fun?
- [00:01:09.560]Consider bringing your family, your close friends, or your neighbors along.
- [00:01:13.480]Walking or, if you feel up to the challenge,
- [00:01:16.153]cross-country skiing can make for a great outing.
- [00:01:19.853]Plus, it’s a good way to catch up with your favorite people,
- [00:01:22.773]all while keeping your body on the move.
- [00:01:25.273]Or, for a little bit of a nostalgic winter workout,
- [00:01:28.480]grab a sled and head to a local hill.
- [00:01:31.180]Sledding is a great way to get your heart pumping
- [00:01:33.159]as you climb up for another run –
- [00:01:34.891]a fun, energy-burning activity that works your legs and core.
- [00:01:38.800]Or get creative with yard work – shoveling snow can give you
- [00:01:42.800]a serious workout while keeping your sidewalks and driveway clear and safe.
- [00:01:48.340]So here’s the main takeaway today:
- [00:01:50.620]Set realistic body movement goals that fit your busy winter schedule.
- [00:01:54.760]Whether it’s committing to 20-minute workout a few times a week
- [00:01:57.420]or simply walking your dog every day, staying consistent
- [00:02:01.160]is the key to keeping your body moving all winter long.
- [00:02:04.800]Make it part of your daily routine, and soon enough,
- [00:02:07.780]you’ll notice the benefits – both physically and mentally!
- [00:02:11.780]All that to say—whether you’re bundled up for a walk,
- [00:02:14.650]braving the treadmill, or staying cozy with a quick workout indoors,
- [00:02:18.500]make time for your health – make time for you.
- [00:02:21.060]Nebraska winters may be cold, but your activity level doesn’t have to freeze up.
- [00:02:25.960]Stay active, stay healthy, and enjoy this winter season!
