- [00:00:00.000]Welcome back to Countdown to Kickoff. Matt Coatney with you and as we do every week a chance to check
- [00:00:08.220]in with the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Rodney Bennett. I hope you got
- [00:00:12.800]a little turkey in you yesterday, and I hope you've enjoyed the holiday. You know, I knew you were
- [00:00:18.660]going to ask me about that. I knew the first thing you were going to ask me was about Thanksgiving
- [00:00:23.100]and turkey and desserts, and I promise you that I said I was not going to overdo it.
- [00:00:29.060]I wasn't going to eat more calories than I was burning, but I think that I've gained four pounds.
- [00:00:34.680]Honest to God I put on these pants and I thought you have got to be kidding me.
- [00:00:38.460]Four pounds just by looking at the dessert table. You'll have time to get rid of it. I cannot believe
- [00:00:44.860]how fast this semester has gone by. Once the students get back from this break they are
- [00:00:49.280]they're going to be ready for finals before too long. Yeah, it's,
- [00:00:52.960]it's amazing how fast the semester has gone. You know I just sort of think about where we started
- [00:00:58.260]back in August and we sort of moved through all the seasons and all the things that go on on the
- [00:01:03.480]university campus and now here we are you know last last hoorah of the regular season. So, there,
- [00:01:10.320]there you have it folks you heard it here first. It goes quick. Chancellor we recently spoke about
- [00:01:16.280]the Big Ten expansion and the inclusion of Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA. Today I want
- [00:01:22.820]to ask you about another West Coast university specifically there's an annual list that Stanford
- [00:01:28.320]released which includes great news about Nebraska researchers. Tell us about that. Yeah, I'm really
- [00:01:34.160]glad that you asked me about the list. I think it's really exciting news and news that I'm always
- [00:01:39.500]interested and happy to share and really to brag about as a good chancellor ought to do.
- [00:01:45.460]Stanford releases a list, or has released a list, of the world's most influential
- [00:01:52.680]researchers. And I really want to place emphasis on the world's most influential researchers.
- [00:01:58.700]There are 180 researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who are on that list.
- [00:02:05.900]My goodness. I know it takes your breath away, right? The names, the list names the top two
- [00:02:14.460]percent of the most influential scientists in the world. Using measurements like significance of the
- [00:02:22.540]research and how often the research is cited by other scientists. To have 180 of our faculty
- [00:02:30.780]members across so many disciplines included on this list is really a testament to the
- [00:02:37.500]innovative work occurring on our campuses and the quality of education that our students
- [00:02:43.780]are being offered. We are making a tremendous, huge impact all over, all around the world
- [00:02:52.400]and that work and the work that we do here in Lincoln and across the state of Nebraska
- [00:02:59.180]is just unbelievable in terms of its impact. And we have one of the Husker researchers
- [00:03:04.020]cited on that list here with us today, right? We do. Very happy to welcome to our pre-game
- [00:03:09.740]show, Dr. Robert Woody. Professor Woody is the Distinguished Professor of Music in the
- [00:03:16.560]Glenn Korff School of Music. Dr. Woody specializes in music psychology
- [00:03:22.260]and education, and he has conducted really exciting research on improving musical practice
- [00:03:30.640]for students. Dr. Woody, thank you so much for joining us today and congratulations on
- [00:03:35.540]this honor. Thanks. It's great to be here. Obviously, it was amazing to hear that my
- [00:03:39.660]name wound up on a list like this, but to be on there with 179 other colleagues from
- [00:03:44.220]around the university, it's really special. Tell us a little more about the research that
- [00:03:48.580]you're doing here at Nebraska. What is music psychology? Sure. In a nutshell, my work takes
- [00:03:54.060]a research-based approach to music performance and music learning, and then gives people more
- [00:03:58.940]effective strategies for improving their musicality, including when they are practicing
- [00:04:03.320]for performance. Music psychology research is finding that certain types of practice work
- [00:04:08.360]better than others, and my research is driven by a desire to create better musicians and better
- [00:04:13.620]music teachers with that knowledge. Psychology is the study of humanity, and in my view,
- [00:04:18.460]humanity is the most important element of music. After all, music is made by human beings for
- [00:04:24.080]human beings. When I'm at my boldest, I like to say that musicians who take their craft seriously
- [00:04:28.680]cannot afford to ignore the psychology behind it. Fascinating stuff. So, Dr. Woody, you've got
- [00:04:35.680]students in the classroom yourself. How is your research shaping your own approach to teaching?
- [00:04:40.260]Yeah, some of the research I've worked on with students has centered on three
- [00:04:43.600]key cognitive skills that are in play when musicians make music. So, I've started bringing
- [00:04:49.080]these to the attention of university music students. In one research study, I found that
- [00:04:53.540]when student musicians were given simple instructions about these three cognitive skills
- [00:04:57.740]in advance of a practice sessions, they reported using more effective practice strategies and
- [00:05:03.380]having a more productive and meaningful experience practicing, compared to those who were not prompted
- [00:05:08.240]to think about these cognitive skills beforehand. So, equipping musicians to get more out of their
- [00:05:13.580]practicing generates more enjoyment and satisfaction with their musicianship, which
- [00:05:18.220]obviously is what we're after in the end. Well, Dr. Woody, it sure sounds like these
- [00:05:23.000]students are really lucky to have you in class, that they could benefit from this work. I think
- [00:05:27.360]we all wish we had smart researchers like yourself giving us the three keys to success before going
- [00:05:33.500]to work. Right, Chancellor? Absolutely. But I have to tell you, and especially to our listeners,
- [00:05:37.980]Dr. Woody has sort of joked around that when he heard that he was on a list and that
- [00:05:43.560]he had to come to see the Chancellor, I think it made him a little bit nervous about being
- [00:05:48.000]on a list and going to see the Chancellor. But I assured him that he was on a good list,
- [00:05:53.600]there was nothing to worry about, and we are certainly very proud of him, but can definitely
- [00:05:58.960]appreciate a little bit of anxiety of being on the Chancellor's list. But he's a good professor
- [00:06:05.600]and we're very lucky, as you mentioned, to have him. Dr. Woody and his colleagues across the university are conducting
- [00:06:13.540]innovative research, like this everyday research that impacts and strengthens the lives and the
- [00:06:20.380]education of our students. When I look at the names of all of the Husker scientists listed
- [00:06:26.240]on the list, it really inspires me. I think what's evidenced by this list and by Dr. Woody's work
- [00:06:34.520]is that Huskers are leading in so many areas, from sciences of all varieties to musical
- [00:06:43.520]and performing arts. And we're very proud of each and every one of our professors, and especially those
- [00:06:49.300]who are on the list. I know that many of our listeners will be curious, because that's what
- [00:06:54.600]Huskers are, very curious, Will be curious to know who are the other professors on the list.
- [00:07:00.780]So if you are curious in that way, you may view the complete list at news.unl.edu, news.unl.edu.
- [00:07:13.500]for a complete list of all of our outstanding faculty who have been recognized with this very special honor.
- [00:07:21.540]Fantastic. Chancellor Rodney Bennett and Dr. Woody, again, thank you both for being here,
- [00:07:27.740]and congratulations again for all your incredible work to earn this honor.
- [00:07:32.580]We'll come back with the Big Ten Blitz next.
