- [00:00:00.420]Hello, my name is Rachel Larson,
- [00:00:02.400]and I'm the Assistant Dean
- [00:00:03.540]of Academic and Career Development
- [00:00:05.100]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business.
- [00:00:07.980]One of the best parts of my job is working with students
- [00:00:10.980]and their career paths after graduation
- [00:00:13.350]and while they're in school as well.
- [00:00:15.240]Today, I am joined by Cassidy June,
- [00:00:17.640]who is here to tell us a little bit
- [00:00:19.080]about her internship experiences
- [00:00:20.670]while she's been a College of Business student.
- [00:00:22.710]Welcome, Cassidy.
- [00:00:23.787]Oh, thank you so much for having me.
- [00:00:25.680]Of course. How are you doing?
- [00:00:27.210]I'm doing pretty good.
- [00:00:28.410]It's a Friday, so I can't complain.
- [00:00:31.410]Just getting ready for the weekend.
- [00:00:32.880]Excellent.
- [00:00:33.750]Well, tell us a little bit about you.
- [00:00:35.100]Where are you from? What are you majoring in?
- [00:00:36.810]Yeah, so I'm from Milford, Nebraska.
- [00:00:38.820]It's a smaller town, about 45 minutes outside of Lincoln,
- [00:00:43.590]so not too far from home.
- [00:00:45.090]I can go home if I want to and see my pets.
- [00:00:47.550]Yeah.
- [00:00:48.383]I am a Business and Law major
- [00:00:50.640]with minors in Political Science and Management.
- [00:00:53.790]And as a Business and Law major,
- [00:00:55.410]it's one of our newest majors.
- [00:00:56.760]And I know that you've had some pretty cool internships
- [00:00:59.130]related to both business and law.
- [00:01:01.050]Tell us a little bit about your internships
- [00:01:02.670]and what you did as an intern.
- [00:01:03.960]Oh, yeah, so I've had two
- [00:01:05.820]that are related to the business law area so far.
- [00:01:09.180]One of them was over the summer.
- [00:01:11.100]I was an Audit and Risk Intern at First State Bank Nebraska
- [00:01:15.900]during their like Summer Internship Program.
- [00:01:18.750]And then right now,
- [00:01:20.250]I am also a Legal Intern for Bruning Law Group,
- [00:01:23.880]and that's a law firm in like Downtown Lincoln area.
- [00:01:26.610]So, one internship that's very business-oriented,
- [00:01:28.890]the other one that's more legal-oriented.
- [00:01:30.720]Yes. Very good.
- [00:01:31.553]I wanted to get like an idea
- [00:01:33.810]of both the business side and the legal side,
- [00:01:35.743]and that's what I did.
- [00:01:37.140]What's a project that you're really proud of
- [00:01:39.060]that you've been doing?
- [00:01:39.893]Oh, yeah, so in my audit and risk internship at the bank,
- [00:01:44.610]I did a lot of learning banking regulations
- [00:01:47.610]and then figuring out how to go through our like loan files,
- [00:01:51.240]our banking records,
- [00:01:52.500]and make sure that we're in compliance
- [00:01:54.090]with all the regulations
- [00:01:55.380]that we need to be in compliance with.
- [00:01:57.870]And then at my legal internship at the law firm,
- [00:02:00.780]I do a lot of research on attorney general
- [00:02:04.770]and gubernatorial races all throughout the country,
- [00:02:07.950]and then I create databases for them
- [00:02:09.690]and give them to the attorneys for them to use.
- [00:02:12.630]How did you find these internships?
- [00:02:14.820]Well, people always say it's about who you know,
- [00:02:16.890]and I'll say that's very true for me.
- [00:02:20.040]For the legal internship at the law firm,
- [00:02:23.160]I actually knew someone from like my small town area.
- [00:02:26.370]So they were in a small town similar to my small town,
- [00:02:30.750]and I connected with an attorney at the law firm
- [00:02:34.200]for a job shadow back in high school.
- [00:02:36.840]And so when I came to the College of Business,
- [00:02:39.540]I had to do this interview
- [00:02:41.580]with someone from a field I wanted to go into.
- [00:02:44.010]I reached out, and then she was impressed
- [00:02:46.740]during that interview of her,
- [00:02:48.600]and then said, "If you'd like to apply for an internship,
- [00:02:52.170]go ahead, we'd love to have you."
- [00:02:53.940]And so that's how I got that one.
- [00:02:55.680]And then for the internship at the bank,
- [00:02:59.910]what I did was my mom's college roommate
- [00:03:03.630]posted on Facebook about the internship,
- [00:03:06.300]and I said, "That's exactly what I wanna do."
- [00:03:08.610]And then I applied for it,
- [00:03:10.290]and had an interview, and received it.
- [00:03:12.450]So you're really using your hidden network
- [00:03:14.010]and your networking skills
- [00:03:14.970]pretty well. Yes.
- [00:03:15.803]Well, and you mentioned the informational interview
- [00:03:18.000]and networking as well.
- [00:03:19.440]And those are part
- [00:03:20.760]of our Professional Enhancement Program courses, or PrEP,
- [00:03:23.400]what we call for short here in the College of Business.
- [00:03:26.160]So, those are four one credit hour pass,
- [00:03:28.200]no pass classes that are required
- [00:03:29.910]of all College of Business students
- [00:03:31.620]just to make sure that they are prepared,
- [00:03:33.810]they're confident, professional, and connected
- [00:03:35.820]for internships and then life after graduation.
- [00:03:38.730]So in addition to the networking
- [00:03:42.630]and the informational interview,
- [00:03:44.520]what are some things that you've learned
- [00:03:45.630]in your Professional Enhancement Program courses
- [00:03:47.580]that helped you when searching for
- [00:03:49.020]and applying for your internships?
- [00:03:50.970]Well, back in the first one of those courses,
- [00:03:53.070]I know I had a lot of help developing my resume.
- [00:03:56.580]I had just come from high school,
- [00:03:57.960]and so my entire resume
- [00:03:59.220]was all these high school involvements.
- [00:04:01.380]And then when I got to college,
- [00:04:02.580]I was a little nervous 'cause I was like,
- [00:04:04.380]I don't know what people are looking for,
- [00:04:06.510]how exactly to build a resume
- [00:04:08.160]when I don't have the most experience in college so far.
- [00:04:11.970]And so I worked a lot throughout those courses
- [00:04:14.250]on building that resume, getting feedback,
- [00:04:16.680]and tailoring it to what we did.
- [00:04:20.340]And then also, there's a lot of mock interviews
- [00:04:23.250]that helped me develop my skills,
- [00:04:26.040]just being able to sit down and talk to people.
- [00:04:28.650]I was really nervous during them for the class,
- [00:04:30.810]but I actually was very grateful eventually
- [00:04:33.960]when I did an interview for my audit at risk internship.
- [00:04:38.040]I walked in, and there was like a panel of people
- [00:04:40.896]who were waiting to like have an interview with me.
- [00:04:43.740]And without those experiences,
- [00:04:45.150]I don't think I would've been as confident
- [00:04:47.400]and comfortable going into that.
- [00:04:49.020]Yeah.
- [00:04:49.853]When you mentioned interview and talking to people,
- [00:04:52.680]and I know you're part of the mock trial group
- [00:04:54.660]here on campus,
- [00:04:55.740]so how has that experience
- [00:04:57.150]in your other extracurricular activities
- [00:04:59.310]helped you in your internships?
- [00:05:01.230]Well, yeah, the biggest thing it's taught me
- [00:05:03.510]is to take initiative in all the work I'm doing.
- [00:05:06.690]I joined mock trial back in freshman year,
- [00:05:08.850]just trying to make connections
- [00:05:10.620]and get a little bit into the legal side of things.
- [00:05:13.440]And now, I've just taken on so many leadership roles
- [00:05:16.560]that I've learned how to like develop myself
- [00:05:18.480]to become a better leader and really push things forward.
- [00:05:22.080]One of the biggest things I did was last year,
- [00:05:23.997]I was Tournament Director
- [00:05:25.890]and so we hosted a tournament at the UNL College of Law,
- [00:05:28.860]and it was wild to me
- [00:05:30.210]because we were hosting teams all across the country.
- [00:05:33.270]There was a point I was emailing someone in Georgia
- [00:05:35.670]trying to get them to come to our tournament in Nebraska,
- [00:05:39.210]and then this year as president,
- [00:05:40.650]I've done a lot more of the developing
- [00:05:42.180]on the backside of things.
- [00:05:43.710]So taking strategic goals
- [00:05:45.360]and what we wanna learn throughout the year
- [00:05:46.920]and trying to implement them and teaching our new students.
- [00:05:51.090]Great, so a lot of good initiative
- [00:05:52.470]probably as well. Yes.
- [00:05:53.880]So, thinking about your College of Business courses,
- [00:05:57.270]what have you taken thus far
- [00:05:58.770]that has helped you on your internship path
- [00:06:01.680]or has really given you some good knowledge and skills
- [00:06:04.170]that you've utilized as an intern?
- [00:06:06.420]Well, I've always been a writer.
- [00:06:07.770]That's been one of my biggest passions.
- [00:06:10.740]But I've been really grateful
- [00:06:12.660]to my like freshman business writing class.
- [00:06:15.780]I didn't realize how like efficient you need to be sometimes
- [00:06:18.960]when writing reports.
- [00:06:20.880]When I was an audit risk intern, we had to write reports of,
- [00:06:24.630]you know, the audits that we completed,
- [00:06:26.520]what we conducted and our findings.
- [00:06:29.190]When I sat down to write that,
- [00:06:30.840]I was, at first, just like completely lost
- [00:06:33.750]'cause I'd never done it before.
- [00:06:35.430]And then I realized a lot of the skills
- [00:06:36.820]that they had taught me in that class,
- [00:06:38.970]I actually transferred
- [00:06:40.110]to being able to write a more efficient report
- [00:06:42.690]than I think otherwise,
- [00:06:44.610]and so that's been very helpful.
- [00:06:46.860]And I know that good communication skills,
- [00:06:49.170]whether they're verbal or written,
- [00:06:50.490]are extremely important in a lot of business fields,
- [00:06:53.100]but probably especially for business and law as well.
- [00:06:55.530]Yes it has.
- [00:06:56.730]Even on the legal side of things,
- [00:06:58.950]a lot of the legal world is just,
- [00:07:02.070]you know, how well you can talk to people,
- [00:07:04.260]how well you make your arguments,
- [00:07:06.060]and getting a point across very clear and efficiently.
- [00:07:09.030]So it's been very helpful.
- [00:07:10.500]Excellent.
- [00:07:11.580]So, what skills did you develop as an intern
- [00:07:14.820]that you are hoping to utilize
- [00:07:16.290]in your future career or graduation,
- [00:07:19.050]post-graduation opportunities?
- [00:07:21.120]I think the biggest skill I've taken away
- [00:07:23.190]is being more detail-oriented
- [00:07:25.860]and not getting so distracted by my surroundings.
- [00:07:29.280]When I was like pouring through all these documents,
- [00:07:31.980]trying to check for compliance,
- [00:07:33.870]I realized I couldn't just like skim this quickly
- [00:07:36.990]and then like go through the next one to get done faster.
- [00:07:40.350]There's a lot of having to like check all the details,
- [00:07:43.770]create plans,
- [00:07:44.820]to make sure that you're covering everything you need to do
- [00:07:48.090]and then holding yourself accountable.
- [00:07:50.190]And so that was very eye-opening and helpful to me.
- [00:07:54.000]And I know even now,
- [00:07:55.050]when I'm going into like my other internship
- [00:07:58.200]at the law firm,
- [00:07:59.070]I now know when I'm redoing research,
- [00:08:01.890]I know what to look for
- [00:08:03.150]and to double-check everything I find.
- [00:08:05.070]That's great.
- [00:08:06.120]So, what's next for you?
- [00:08:08.160]Well, right now, I am actually working
- [00:08:10.560]on figuring out the LSATs and trying to apply to law school.
- [00:08:15.420]I am a junior right now,
- [00:08:17.040]so getting started on that studying
- [00:08:19.500]and hopefully to take it next summer,
- [00:08:21.600]and then hopefully to go to law school,
- [00:08:23.220]and eventually employment law.
- [00:08:25.260]Very good.
- [00:08:26.093]Well, we're so excited to have you
- [00:08:28.110]for another couple years here
- [00:08:29.867]at the University of Nebraska and in the College of Business
- [00:08:32.190]because you're just an outstanding student leader
- [00:08:34.170]and one that has already had two fabulous internships,
- [00:08:37.080]and I know you're gonna do even more before you graduate.
- [00:08:39.510]So, thank you so much for joining us, Cassidy.
- [00:08:41.906]Thank you so much for having me.
- [00:08:43.794](uplifting music)
