- [00:00:00.000]Welcome back. Countdown to kickoff. Huskers today against the USC Trojans out here in Los Angeles.
- [00:00:07.460]But before we get to the game, a chance to sit down with the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Rodney Bennett.
- [00:00:12.640]Always good to see you, sir.
- [00:00:13.840]Greg, hard to believe that we're in California. We're not in Lincoln, California. Sunny California.
- [00:00:20.780]Never rains.
- [00:00:22.720]It never rains.
- [00:00:24.420]Southern California.
- [00:00:25.780]There was a song about that, wasn't there? It never rains in Southern California.
- [00:00:29.340]I believe so.
- [00:00:30.220]Yeah, I think back in the day it was maybe on the top 100 list, maybe top 25 list. I don't know. I just remember it was a good song.
- [00:00:36.400]Remember the Big Ten conferences? This league stretches coast to coast, and here we are playing a fellow league member.
- [00:00:42.140]We have to remember that. I'm really looking forward to today's game and watching the Huskers compete with our new rivals across the Big Ten.
- [00:00:49.940]It's also great to have two-storied programs with huge legacies like USC and Nebraska united in the same athletic conversation.
- [00:00:59.140]As well as the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
- [00:01:03.100]As you know, and our listeners know, growing the athletic and academic strength of our conference really benefits all of us.
- [00:01:12.660]No doubt. Speaking of growth, Chancellor, I know that there have been a lot of exciting developments around the university in the past couple of weeks.
- [00:01:18.420]Walk us through some of those things.
- [00:01:20.020]Yeah, you're actually right. There's been a lot going on recently.
- [00:01:22.400]There's been so much excitement and momentum around the university over the past few weeks.
- [00:01:28.840]And really, when I think back over the entire semester, I know I've previously mentioned enrollment, retention, and graduation rates are all rising.
- [00:01:40.160]Private giving is increasing, and we are experiencing gains in external funding for research and creative activity.
- [00:01:49.280]But most recently, we have a couple of really exciting announcements.
- [00:01:55.000]A record nine Husker faculty members.
- [00:01:58.540]These faculty members have earned the National Science Foundation's Early Career Awards,
- [00:02:03.300]which places us in the top 25 in the country.
- [00:02:07.340]In addition to that, 180 UNL faculty members were just featured in the 2024 list by Stanford.
- [00:02:16.700]Of the top, check this out, the top 2% of the world's most influential researchers.
- [00:02:25.340]That really speaks to the strength of the UNL faculty.
- [00:02:28.240]Of the academic academy here at UNL.
- [00:02:31.400]Boy, that's incredible.
- [00:02:32.740]Thank you for sharing that with us today.
- [00:02:34.080]A lot to celebrate.
- [00:02:34.940]Which brings us to this amazing student who's joining us today.
- [00:02:38.880]Who, as I understand, has created a very unique tool for Husker celebration that's been catching on.
- [00:02:44.440]And I cannot wait for you to visit with Carrie.
- [00:02:47.900]Carrie is an amazing student.
- [00:02:49.960]Happy that she's here with us today.
- [00:02:52.240]Carrie is a senior child, youth, and family studies student.
- [00:02:57.940]From Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:02:59.620]And she is the creator of the Corn Glove, which has taken the student section by storm.
- [00:03:07.780]And we're very excited about her entrepreneurial spirit and creativity and the fact that she is with us today.
- [00:03:17.160]And I cannot wait to hear her talk through how she came up with this bright idea.
- [00:03:22.560]I would note, Greg, that all of this started from her residence hall room.
- [00:03:28.180]Here on campus.
- [00:03:29.740]So it says a lot about the out-of-classroom experiential opportunities that take place across the campus to include the value of living in a residence hall in a residential community.
- [00:03:42.760]And Carrie is going to tell us all about it.
- [00:03:45.280]Love it.
- [00:03:45.700]Carrie, welcome.
- [00:03:46.620]Thank you so much for being here with us today.
- [00:03:48.120]I am so fascinated by this story.
- [00:03:49.780]Tell our listeners about this really fun corn-themed glove that you've created.
- [00:03:54.900]And how did you come up with the idea?
- [00:03:57.340]Yeah, thank you so much for having me.
- [00:03:59.460]It's super exciting to be here with you, Greg and Chancellor Bennett.
- [00:04:02.860]Yeah, the corn gloves first began in the summer of 2022.
- [00:04:08.560]My cousin Jada and I were both students here at the university.
- [00:04:12.180]And she had spent the summer working at a summer camp in Texas.
- [00:04:17.140]And a lot of the southern schools have different hand symbols to represent their mascots at their schools.
- [00:04:22.940]And so a lot of her co-workers at the camp were asking her, like, what is Nebraska?
- [00:04:27.040]And Nebraska is a hand symbol.
- [00:04:28.320]And she's like, hmm, we don't really have one.
- [00:04:31.140]And so she was talking to me about this.
- [00:04:33.290]um over over a phone call and we were like we need a hand symbol at Nebraska so we came up with
- [00:04:40.970]corn it you know went through some different tweaking and all of these things but um then I
- [00:04:47.210]realized nobody is going to know what it is if we're holding up our hand unless the person is
- [00:04:52.730]wearing a glove so the corn gloves were born um I started making some and we started wearing them
- [00:04:58.910]to football games and uh yeah that's kind of how it all started was there a moment you're like
- [00:05:04.970]this is catching on did something kind of happen um yes it or a game was there a game that it kind
- [00:05:13.330]of popped up and yeah so slowly as we began people would notice that we were wearing them
- [00:05:19.650]and they're like what is that and we would explain like it's corn we show them the front of the
- [00:05:23.970]glove they're like oh my goodness that is awesome um and some yeah some people would be like oh
- [00:05:28.810]what is that and we would explain like it's corn we show them the front of the glove they're like oh
- [00:05:28.890]like where can i get one i would explain i make them blah blah blah um but it i would say it
- [00:05:35.190]really took off earlier this year um around september um yeah super grateful to have been
- [00:05:42.570]featured in an article um on unl's uh like the daily nebraskan or i don't i don't exactly know
- [00:05:51.310]what it was but an article ran and that kind of gave it a publicity push and things really started
- [00:05:58.870]off from there so what began as just kind of a fun thing a hobby kind of a business now and it's
- [00:06:03.470]right out of your dorm room absolutely yeah um as soon as some major attention started coming to the
- [00:06:10.590]corn gloves i pretty quickly had to move out of my dorm room uh and now i run everything from
- [00:06:15.750]my parents house here in lincoln um we've got a whole setup in the garage i can kind of start
- [00:06:21.950]mass producing we're up to like 40 gloves at a time that we're able to make and so um yeah it's
- [00:06:28.850]i've been able to launch a website where people can buy them and i ship them out nationwide um
- [00:06:36.430]which has been super incredible and just yeah really crazy to have been part of yeah starting
- [00:06:42.730]something new here carrie that is fascinating chancer uh if you've got to get your glove right
- [00:06:47.990]do you have one yet i do i do not have a glove yet but carrie is here with us so i'm hopeful that
- [00:06:53.350]maybe at the end of the interview i will be able to join the student section with my corn glove
- [00:06:58.830]i did want to just say that as carrie was telling her story i'm reminded of how many
- [00:07:05.350]basements and garages of parents have been the launching place and pad of so many innovative
- [00:07:12.310]creative uh companies uh and entrepreneurial opportunities uh that our students and others
- [00:07:19.430]have been able to realize i mean thank goodness for parents who allow students to do all matter
- [00:07:25.490]of things in their garages and their basements so
- [00:07:28.810]carrie's family is certainly a part of that more than anything greg i am just so proud to learn
- [00:07:36.050]about carrie's story and witness her entrepreneurial spirit being a student is demanding work already
- [00:07:43.790]and to start a small business on top of that i think speaks to carrie's work ethic and the work
- [00:07:50.370]ethic that hustler cuskers are showing across our campus beyond carrie's uh enterprising spirit
- [00:07:58.790]nebraska is doing a lot to cultivate other young entrepreneurs i'll highlight just a couple quick
- [00:08:05.790]programs the engler agribusiness entrepreneurship program which has over 230 alumni working and
- [00:08:15.930]growing businesses right here in nebraska and the center for entrepreneurship and the college of
- [00:08:23.250]business are inspiring and giving students all the tools that they need
- [00:08:28.770]to get out in the world and turn their ideas into thriving businesses carrie is so awesome
- [00:08:36.630]and she joins a long legacy of unl students who have gone on to do great things through businesses
- [00:08:44.950]and other entrepreneurial opportunities that we're just so proud of her oh this is so fun
- [00:08:49.930]carrie thank you for sharing your story congratulations on this little idea that
- [00:08:54.130]you've come up with and continued success to you thank you so much thanks for having me chancellor
