- [00:00:06.150]Hi, this is CS4NE.
- [00:00:09.060]I'm Guy Trainin, a professor here
- [00:00:10.800]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:12.750]And I'm Kimberly Ingraham-Beck from Gretna Public School.
- [00:00:15.300]And today we're going to talk to Jamie.
- [00:00:18.035]And Jamie is from Southern Public Schools here in Nebraska
- [00:00:22.350]and she is just starting out with computer science.
- [00:00:26.250]So, what do you think we're gonna learn?
- [00:00:28.470]Well, I'm really interested to hear from someone who's,
- [00:00:31.290]you know, brand new to this
- [00:00:32.820]and teaching the standards for the first time.
- [00:00:34.680]So I'm excited to hear what she's gonna be doing.
- [00:00:37.546]All right, let's go to the interview.
- [00:00:40.500]Well, welcome.
- [00:00:41.333]Thank you so much for joining us today.
- [00:00:44.400]Tell me a little bit about yourself
- [00:00:46.440]and your experience in education.
- [00:00:48.300]All right, my name's Jamie Schluter
- [00:00:50.520]and I teach at Southern Public Schools,
- [00:00:53.460]which is in y more Nebraska southeast corner.
- [00:00:57.180]I am our sole 7 through 12 BMT teacher,
- [00:01:00.624]and this is my 11th year.
- [00:01:02.340]All my experience has been at Southern,
- [00:01:03.960]so I received my education.
- [00:01:08.042]I went to SEC and Beatrice first,
- [00:01:09.720]and then got my undergrad at Peru.
- [00:01:11.250]And then I went back through Peru to get my master's.
- [00:01:14.430]Awesome, awesome, awesome.
- [00:01:16.590]So with these new graduation standard requirements,
- [00:01:20.400]how will your school be fulfilling those?
- [00:01:23.250]All right, actually, two years ago in the spring 2023,
- [00:01:28.080]I think, me and my counselor knew
- [00:01:30.360]it was kind of on the radar.
- [00:01:31.470]So the way we decided to add it was I used
- [00:01:35.130]to teach a full-year length of Intro Tech class.
- [00:01:38.340]So I had to condense my Intro Tech course into a semester.
- [00:01:41.100]And then the other half of that year will be
- [00:01:43.947]our computer science and technology class now.
- [00:01:45.964]Okay.
- [00:01:46.797]So, that is how we're implementing it.
- [00:01:48.180]This year's sophomores will be the first group
- [00:01:50.887]that is required for.
- [00:01:53.040]Awesome, all right.
- [00:01:54.570]And so with these new standards
- [00:01:58.170]that you're gonna be teaching, how do you anticipate
- [00:02:00.660]handling moments when students ask questions
- [00:02:03.210]and you don't immediately know the answer to?
- [00:02:06.480]I feel that's probably a tough one for all of us teachers
- [00:02:09.330]'cause we don't like looking incompetent
- [00:02:11.070]up in front of the class.
- [00:02:12.510]But I've learned over my 11 years just to always,
- [00:02:15.077]I don't wanna fake the answer and be wrong.
- [00:02:18.150]I want to tell them, oh, that's a good question.
- [00:02:20.317]It's actually something I don't know right now.
- [00:02:22.110]I'll look into it and get back to you.
- [00:02:23.940]Or I might turn it around on them and say,
- [00:02:25.560]hey, that's something I haven't learned about.
- [00:02:27.300]Go do your own research, bring it back to us.
- [00:02:29.910]So, hope that continues in our computer science class.
- [00:02:33.180]Yeah, I love that.
- [00:02:34.140]And it really helps, I think,
- [00:02:35.310]engage students a little bit more,
- [00:02:36.900]especially when you're honest and kind of vulnerable
- [00:02:39.150]and like, well, you know, I actually don't know
- [00:02:40.650]that if you could help me learn,
- [00:02:42.030]then we can both learn or, you know.
- [00:02:43.710]I love that.
- [00:02:45.600]What strategies are you using to quickly get up
- [00:02:48.300]to speed on these new topics that you'll be teaching?
- [00:02:51.780]I think this has been the toughest one for me
- [00:02:54.270]because I feel so clueless still
- [00:02:55.950]as to where to get started or where to go about it.
- [00:02:58.080]So in that spring of 2023,
- [00:03:01.050]I just started making a note list
- [00:03:04.290]of here's all the different curriculums I've heard
- [00:03:06.240]that might work for this.
- [00:03:07.380]Do your research, look into it,
- [00:03:09.540]in the hopes that NDE would tell me what to do
- [00:03:11.910]before I actually had to start.
- [00:03:13.530]And so I was really excited when they pushed it back a year
- [00:03:16.860]'cause then I could hold out for that NDE course.
- [00:03:18.900]So, basically I made sure to collect my own data
- [00:03:25.860]and tell somebody gave the data for me.
- [00:03:27.570]I was thinking back to this,
- [00:03:29.700]I did take the Code.org, UNL class.
- [00:03:32.490]Awesome.
- [00:03:33.323]But I skipped summer of 2020,
- [00:03:34.350]so it's been a little while.
- [00:03:35.640]Oh
- [00:03:36.473]I had that to fall back on,
- [00:03:37.658]but I didn't, I was gonna have to go back through
- [00:03:40.020]that as well if I was gonna implement that, yeah.
- [00:03:44.640]Awesome and then what curriculum
- [00:03:47.850]or activities are you currently thinking
- [00:03:49.860]about planning for your students?
- [00:03:51.900]So my final decision is to use
- [00:03:55.005]the NDE Introduction to Computer Science
- [00:03:57.300]and Technology course that they set up.
- [00:03:59.550]Last fall, I was at a workshop
- [00:04:01.710]that they said they were making it and it would be coming.
- [00:04:04.830]And so I was just hoping it was coming
- [00:04:06.750]before I had to actually start.
- [00:04:08.640]And it did.
- [00:04:09.630]My other thought was the Code HS1.
- [00:04:13.500]They aligned theirs to the Nebraska standards too.
- [00:04:15.600]So I had had that on my list
- [00:04:17.034]and I think once I get through one semester of it,
- [00:04:19.957]I'll test some of their stuff out too,
- [00:04:21.840]kind of bounce back and forth.
- [00:04:22.890]But I was very, very thankful that NDE said,
- [00:04:26.857]"We will piece together different pieces for you to follow."
- [00:04:29.970]For all of us feeling very lost at the start.
- [00:04:33.060]Yes, that is awesome.
- [00:04:35.700]And it's kind of nice that you have options too.
- [00:04:38.456]Yes.
- [00:04:39.289]So you're not, you know,
- [00:04:40.122]locked into one specific curriculum,
- [00:04:42.180]but you can kind of float around and see what you like
- [00:04:45.000]and we'll see what the kids like too.
- [00:04:46.560]Yeah, and I'm gonna.
- [00:04:47.670]I kind of reminded myself
- [00:04:49.290]as I was thinking through this next semester.
- [00:04:52.290]It'll definitely be a remember that you're just going
- [00:04:54.780]week-by-week, even day-by-day trialing and error.
- [00:04:58.530]Next year it'll be that much better already, so.
- [00:05:02.160]A first year teacher,
- [00:05:02.993]Jamie wouldn't have been able to say that to myself.
- [00:05:04.560]But in my 11th year I can talk myself through that.
- [00:05:07.710]Awesome, awesome.
- [00:05:09.000]Well, anything else you'd like to share with this?
- [00:05:12.155]I was thinking just one of my biggest shout outs.
- [00:05:14.430]I was at a workshop conference this summer sitting
- [00:05:17.640]with a circle of BMA teachers
- [00:05:19.363]and the girl next to me was stressing about, I have no,
- [00:05:24.450]I don't know anything about coding,
- [00:05:25.560]I don't know anything about programming.
- [00:05:26.670]What the heck am I supposed to do?
- [00:05:28.350]And I said to her,
- [00:05:29.227]"Well, one thing,
- [00:05:30.720]have you actually read through the standards?
- [00:05:32.430]If you look at them, you will feel a little bit of relief
- [00:05:34.890]because there's much more
- [00:05:36.720]than just coding in these new standards."
- [00:05:38.310]It's one unit,
- [00:05:39.450]it's one chunk, but it's not the whole thing.
- [00:05:41.070]So if you can look at all the other pieces are probably
- [00:05:43.350]things you're more comfortable with,
- [00:05:44.280]like digital citizenship and just basic computer literacy
- [00:05:47.490]and how to use the internet
- [00:05:48.720]for research, all that type of stuff.
- [00:05:50.547]And I just saw the relief wash over her face.
- [00:05:52.793]I'm like, okay, well at least I'm to that point
- [00:05:55.530]and I've helped somebody else feel that way.
- [00:05:57.000]Yay.
- [00:05:57.833]That's hopefully if we can all kind
- [00:05:59.640]of help each other through this first year.
- [00:06:01.170]And it's not just programming,
- [00:06:04.380]none of us are programming geniuses
- [00:06:05.970]and neither is intro to computer science and text, so.
- [00:06:09.960]Yeah, well, wonderful.
- [00:06:11.843]Thank you so much, Jamie.
- [00:06:13.500]I really appreciate you taking the time to meet with us.
- [00:06:15.810]Thanks for having me.
- [00:06:17.580]Okay, so that was a really interesting interview
- [00:06:20.850]because we are used to talking
- [00:06:23.160]and we have been thinking about computer science
- [00:06:25.020]for a long time and it's really refreshing thinking about
- [00:06:27.600]what does it feel like when you're a teacher
- [00:06:29.850]just walking into this.
- [00:06:31.170]And Jamie especially didn't think when she was becoming
- [00:06:34.440]a teacher that this would be one of her assignments.
- [00:06:36.930]So, what do you think we learned here?
- [00:06:38.861]Well, I really liked her talking about how she was going
- [00:06:42.240]to be vulnerable with the kids
- [00:06:43.590]and learn along with the kids and have them help her learn.
- [00:06:46.920]I really appreciated that.
- [00:06:48.450]Yeah and taking every opportunity
- [00:06:51.150]to get some professional development that she knows enough
- [00:06:53.850]to get started knowing that there's going
- [00:06:56.280]to be some learning on the go.
- [00:06:57.870]Absolutely.
- [00:06:58.920]Alright, so this was great
- [00:07:01.080]and we'll see you next time on CS4NE.
- [00:07:04.063](gentle music)
