- [00:00:00.960]All right. Well, welcome everyone to Filing the FAFSA webinar. My name is Kayla Tupper. On behalf
- [00:00:07.640]of the Office of Admissions, we are so excited to host you tonight. We really appreciate you
- [00:00:12.420]joining us from wherever you may be. We know as you navigate senior year, you may have questions
- [00:00:18.200]and thoughts. We are here to help you along the way. And hopefully, eventually, we'll help you
- [00:00:23.780]all the way to Lincoln, Nebraska, next fall. Now for tonight's webinar, it will last 30 minutes,
- [00:00:30.020]we'll try to end at 7:30. Mainly because after this webinar, we'll be hosting a variety of
- [00:00:35.560]different academic webinars, as well as our honors program. So tonight's not over at 7:30.
- [00:00:41.440]If you want to learn a little bit more about our academic programs, our university honors program,
- [00:00:45.600]we have a variety of webinars later on tonight that we will host. Now tonight's session will
- [00:00:51.100]be recorded and then posted to our admitted students.
- [00:00:53.760]So if you missed something tonight, you'll have that information for you.
- [00:00:58.860]Also during the webinar, if you do have a question or you need clarity on something we talked about,
- [00:01:04.280]please use the Q&A function. You will see that at the bottom of your Zoom window.
- [00:01:09.380]We will not be using chat to ask questions. We're only using the Q&A function.
- [00:01:15.140]Now throughout this whole entire presentation, if you do ask a question,
- [00:01:19.320]we have experts on the back end who are going to help answer those
- [00:01:23.520]questions.
- [00:01:23.740]Our goal is to make sure that you get all of your questions answered by the
- [00:01:28.700]time that we end the webinar.
- [00:01:29.940]Now some of the questions that you may ask are going to be so good that we
- [00:01:34.040]want to save them to answer them live.
- [00:01:35.720]So if we don't get to your question right away,
- [00:01:37.340]it's just because it's such a good question that we're going to wait until
- [00:01:40.180]towards the end and answer that throughout the whole live for everybody too.
- [00:01:44.180]Last but not least, also for the session,
- [00:01:46.880]we'll be posting some links actually in the chat.
- [00:01:49.820]That's how we're going to use the chat function tonight.
- [00:01:51.700]These links are going to be to webpages,
- [00:01:53.700]that we think are going to be helpful for you tonight.
- [00:01:55.880]All right.
- [00:01:57.360]Well, that's all I have for you all here.
- [00:01:58.900]I'm happy to introduce the expert of experts,
- [00:02:01.640]Kristy Saunders with Husker Hub.
- [00:02:03.640]Hi, everyone.
- [00:02:05.940]So as Kayla said, my name is Kristy Saunders.
- [00:02:08.700]I'm the Associate Director of Husker Hub.
- [00:02:10.780]And you will be working with us a lot during your time at UNL.
- [00:02:15.180]Husker Hub is the one-stop shop for all things financial aid,
- [00:02:20.020]registrar, your student billing,
- [00:02:22.500]basically anything that you need to know
- [00:02:23.680]about your scholarships, financial aid,
- [00:02:26.080]and how to pay your bill while you are in school.
- [00:02:28.000]But today what we're going to be chatting about
- [00:02:30.220]is filing your FAFSA form
- [00:02:31.980]because that is coming up here pretty quick
- [00:02:34.560]when that will be open for you to access.
- [00:02:36.480]So just to get started,
- [00:02:40.520]I always have to highlight what FAFSA stands for
- [00:02:43.940]because it's kind of one of those terms
- [00:02:45.980]that we throw around a lot,
- [00:02:47.160]but many people lose what the acronym actually is for.
- [00:02:49.540]It's the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
- [00:02:53.660]And the reason why I bring this up
- [00:02:55.200]is because of that first F, free.
- [00:02:57.580]You should never pay to file the FAFSA.
- [00:03:00.900]Around this time of year,
- [00:03:02.620]there's a lot of businesses, ads that say like,
- [00:03:07.320]pay us $50 and we'll file your FAFSA for you
- [00:03:10.060]and guarantee X, Y, and Z.
- [00:03:11.960]Never ever pay to file your FAFSA.
- [00:03:15.260]It is a free application by design.
- [00:03:18.320]So the FAFSA form is your key
- [00:03:21.160]to need-based financial aid consideration.
- [00:03:23.640]And that is the type of aid
- [00:03:26.420]that we want to see you get,
- [00:03:27.800]which is our grants and aid
- [00:03:30.140]that you don't need to pay back.
- [00:03:31.620]We'll talk a little bit more about that in a minute.
- [00:03:33.560]But this can include financial support
- [00:03:36.320]from the government and other sources
- [00:03:38.380]to help you afford college.
- [00:03:40.300]The FAFSA form opens in December this year
- [00:03:43.480]and financial aid is offered
- [00:03:45.180]on a first-come, first-served basis.
- [00:03:47.420]So the reason why I bring that up
- [00:03:49.540]is so that way once this opens for you in December,
- [00:03:52.900]it's important for you to know
- [00:03:53.620]that you file it as soon as possible
- [00:03:57.220]so that way you meet our priority deadline,
- [00:03:59.620]which is May 1st.
- [00:04:01.620]For those who file their FAFSA
- [00:04:04.260]by the priority deadline,
- [00:04:05.520]that means you are first in line
- [00:04:07.680]for our need-based funding
- [00:04:09.500]and that way we can make sure
- [00:04:11.440]you get every single grant dollar
- [00:04:13.880]you're eligible for.
- [00:04:15.080]If just say for whatever reason
- [00:04:17.160]you do not meet that May 1st deadline,
- [00:04:19.940]it does not mean that you won't receive any grant aid.
- [00:04:22.800]That is not what I'm saying.
- [00:04:23.600]However, if you want to maximize your aid available,
- [00:04:29.020]file it by that priority deadline.
- [00:04:31.140]So our financial aid offers
- [00:04:33.720]are expected to begin on February 12th.
- [00:04:36.560]So if you apply for admission
- [00:04:38.400]by our application priority deadline of November 1st
- [00:04:42.640]and file your FAFSA form by February 1st,
- [00:04:45.340]you very well may have a comprehensive aid package
- [00:04:49.240]available to you at that February 12th announcement.
- [00:04:53.580]So like I've been saying a lot,
- [00:04:56.260]I've been saying this terminology of need-based aid.
- [00:04:59.020]So what does this mean?
- [00:05:00.700]So need-based aid refers to grants,
- [00:05:04.840]which is free money to help you earn your degree
- [00:05:07.800]with no repayment required.
- [00:05:09.480]And most grants can come from federal, state,
- [00:05:12.740]and institutional-based offers,
- [00:05:14.500]and they're based on financial need
- [00:05:17.180]as determined by the FAFSA.
- [00:05:18.820]Another type of need-based aid
- [00:05:21.240]is actually federal student loans.
- [00:05:23.560]And a lot of people are surprised by that
- [00:05:25.540]because they're like,
- [00:05:26.020]you have to pay loans back, right?
- [00:05:27.860]So you can borrow a federal loan
- [00:05:30.260]to help pay for your education.
- [00:05:31.880]They often do not require repayment
- [00:05:34.860]until after you graduate,
- [00:05:36.280]and they offer very reasonable interest rates.
- [00:05:39.040]However, these loans must be repaid with interest.
- [00:05:42.080]Why this is considered a need-based aid option
- [00:05:45.120]is that there are actually
- [00:05:46.000]two different loan options for students.
- [00:05:48.200]There's subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans.
- [00:05:51.940]Subsidized loans,
- [00:05:53.540]are our need-based loan option.
- [00:05:55.860]And the reason why is because subsidized loans
- [00:05:58.820]do not accrue interest while you are enrolled in school.
- [00:06:01.900]Whereas unsubsidized loans do accrue interest
- [00:06:06.000]while you are enrolled.
- [00:06:07.200]So if you are offered both an unsubsidized
- [00:06:10.440]and a subsidized loan,
- [00:06:11.760]you always want to start with subsidized loans first
- [00:06:15.120]if you need them,
- [00:06:16.060]since that is the more friendly option
- [00:06:19.700]since you don't accrue interest while you are enrolled.
- [00:06:23.520]Finally, the other need-based aid
- [00:06:26.060]that you will see from the FAFSA process
- [00:06:28.000]is federal work-study.
- [00:06:29.540]This is the opportunity to gain work experience
- [00:06:33.300]through part-time jobs for those who have financial need
- [00:06:36.300]and desire to earn part of their educational expenses
- [00:06:39.220]through wages.
- [00:06:39.800]These jobs average between 10 to 20 hours per week,
- [00:06:43.460]and they can be on or off campus.
- [00:06:45.720]One of the best benefits
- [00:06:47.720]of these federal work-study positions
- [00:06:49.760]is that me as an employer of federal work-study
- [00:06:53.500]students, I cannot ever schedule you during class.
- [00:06:58.560]I cannot schedule you during finals.
- [00:07:01.020]And there is this kind of built-in partnership
- [00:07:04.080]between the student and the employer,
- [00:07:05.720]because in order for me to keep you on
- [00:07:08.100]as a work-study student,
- [00:07:09.620]you need to be successful in school.
- [00:07:11.580]So in order for you to be successful,
- [00:07:14.500]if you need more study time,
- [00:07:16.120]if you need to have your schedule change
- [00:07:19.700]in order to make sure that you are meeting
- [00:07:21.900]with your professors or having more study time,
- [00:07:23.480]it is at both of our best interests
- [00:07:26.340]to make sure you can have those schedule changes.
- [00:07:28.420]So it is a very student-centered role
- [00:07:31.640]that is really, really, really wonderful,
- [00:07:33.920]especially if you are just entering the workforce
- [00:07:36.900]for the first time,
- [00:07:37.940]like you haven't had a whole lot of work prior.
- [00:07:40.160]So I'd like to highlight this
- [00:07:44.760]since I know that a lot of folks are not sure
- [00:07:47.280]how many people actually receive grants and scholarships.
- [00:07:49.760]And so when we're looking at our own student body,
- [00:07:53.040]we see that we have a lot of students
- [00:07:53.460]and we see that 96% of our first-year students
- [00:07:56.420]are offered a scholarship or grant to attend Nebraska.
- [00:07:59.460]And I don't want any of you to be in that 4%
- [00:08:04.220]that do not receive a scholarship or grant.
- [00:08:06.200]And one of the best ways to prevent that
- [00:08:08.420]is to file your FAFSA to maximize your aid opportunities.
- [00:08:11.980]So let's get started talking about
- [00:08:15.320]how do we file this FAFSA.
- [00:08:16.920]So the first step is creating a federal student aid account.
- [00:08:21.300]Now, if you've ever filed a FAFSA,
- [00:08:23.440]or if you are a parent who had another child
- [00:08:26.500]who's ever filed a FAFSA,
- [00:08:27.660]you very well may already have a federal student aid account.
- [00:08:31.620]However, you've never filed one before,
- [00:08:33.920]then you're going to have to create this
- [00:08:36.260]prior to you starting your FAFSA.
- [00:08:38.560]Now, this is just kind of a fancy term
- [00:08:40.860]for login information.
- [00:08:42.280]So a lot of it's going to seem very familiar to you.
- [00:08:44.600]So you need to have a username and password
- [00:08:46.980]to gain access to all of these
- [00:08:48.780]Department of Education online systems.
- [00:08:50.740]It usually takes about a few minutes
- [00:08:52.980]and it takes about a minute to get to the system.
- [00:08:53.420]It definitely expedites the process
- [00:08:55.160]if you start this well before
- [00:08:57.500]you actually get to the point of filing a FAFSA.
- [00:09:00.400]Both the student and their parent
- [00:09:03.120]will need to each create their own account.
- [00:09:05.220]And just note that parents
- [00:09:07.740]without a social security number or an ITIN,
- [00:09:10.200]you still can absolutely create an account.
- [00:09:12.660]However, you won't be able to create one until December.
- [00:09:16.140]So just keep that in mind as we move forward.
- [00:09:18.900]So the student and parent
- [00:09:22.020]will need to provide their name
- [00:09:23.400]date of birth,
- [00:09:24.740]social security number or ITIN if available,
- [00:09:27.420]phone number and an email address.
- [00:09:30.360]So one of the biggest mistakes
- [00:09:33.160]that we're seeing with this new FAFSA
- [00:09:34.960]is if somebody makes a typo
- [00:09:37.880]or doesn't give correct information
- [00:09:40.020]when they create this federal student aid account.
- [00:09:42.180]It is absolutely vital that you make sure
- [00:09:45.180]that there are no typos in there.
- [00:09:47.420]It's an email address that you have access to
- [00:09:50.180]and can log into easily.
- [00:09:51.720]So that way there are no
- [00:09:53.380]issues with this account as you get to the point
- [00:09:55.840]of the FAFSA.
- [00:09:56.480]So some information
- [00:09:59.840]to gather and I
- [00:10:01.120]recommend taking a picture
- [00:10:03.600]of this side if you have a phone with you.
- [00:10:05.840]So once you have that
- [00:10:07.660]federal student aid account and the FAFSA
- [00:10:09.900]opens in December, here's
- [00:10:11.660]everything that you should have handy
- [00:10:13.820]as you file this FAFSA.
- [00:10:15.500]One, of course, your federal
- [00:10:17.740]student aid account ID and password.
- [00:10:19.580]Your social security number
- [00:10:21.520]if applicable or ITIN number
- [00:10:23.360]your 2023
- [00:10:25.260]federal tax information, tax
- [00:10:27.620]returns or wage documents.
- [00:10:29.280]For those who don't know, the FAFSA
- [00:10:31.580]actually uses two years prior
- [00:10:33.600]for your tax
- [00:10:35.480]information, not this current year.
- [00:10:37.200]So if you were worried
- [00:10:39.760]like, oh, I have to go run and file my taxes
- [00:10:41.760]right now. It's okay. You have
- [00:10:43.600]you actually will be using 2023
- [00:10:45.220]tax information. You also
- [00:10:47.740]need your records of untaxed income
- [00:10:49.920]if any. And then
- [00:10:51.800]on the day you file your
- [00:10:53.340]FAFSA, you'll want to make sure that you know
- [00:10:55.620]your cash, savings, and checking account
- [00:10:57.660]balances as of the day you file.
- [00:10:59.380]And then for students
- [00:11:01.520]who have to include their parent information,
- [00:11:03.820]you will need your parent's name,
- [00:11:05.820]date of birth, social security
- [00:11:07.620]number if applicable, and email
- [00:11:09.660]address. Once again,
- [00:11:11.360]for the students on this call, it is vital
- [00:11:13.640]that you make sure that information is
- [00:11:15.460]correct as you enter it in and that it's
- [00:11:17.480]an email address that your parents have
- [00:11:19.460]access to. And
- [00:11:21.400]finally, our federal school code for
- [00:11:23.320]getting the FAFSA to us once you file
- [00:11:25.560]it is 002565.
- [00:11:27.740]Now, I'm sure
- [00:11:29.480]all of you have incredible memories, so me saying
- [00:11:31.600]that is going to be in there until
- [00:11:33.480]December. But just so you know, there's
- [00:11:35.460]also a school search function, so you also
- [00:11:37.600]can find us just by searching University of
- [00:11:39.500]Nebraska-Lincoln in the FAFSA and we'll pop right up.
- [00:11:41.640]Now, one of the new
- [00:11:45.440]things with this FAFSA that was just
- [00:11:47.480]implemented this past year is that
- [00:11:49.540]every contributor on the FAFSA
- [00:11:51.580]and that includes the student as
- [00:11:53.300]well as any parents that are
- [00:11:54.620]contributing to the FAFSA, they must
- [00:11:57.420]provide consent to share their
- [00:11:59.320]tax information.
- [00:12:00.260]So, parent and guardians will receive
- [00:12:03.200]an immediate email invitation prompting them
- [00:12:05.220]to complete their portion of the FAFSA form and
- [00:12:07.220]provide that consent. What this
- [00:12:09.280]consent is for is to have an actual
- [00:12:11.360]direct link to the IRS
- [00:12:13.400]to pull that information in
- [00:12:15.360]on your behalf. This is actually
- [00:12:17.480]an incredible tool that is
- [00:12:19.400]the most secure that we've ever
- [00:12:21.260]seen for the FAFSA. For those of you who filed
- [00:12:23.280]it in the past, you maybe saw the
- [00:12:25.120]older, less shiny version of
- [00:12:27.280]this tool. This is
- [00:12:28.980]so incredible because it protects
- [00:12:31.040]your information, but it is also
- [00:12:33.280]far more easy for you
- [00:12:35.400]since you don't have to manually enter
- [00:12:37.240]everything. It goes in, you know
- [00:12:39.140]that it's absolutely accurate because it's coming from your
- [00:12:41.200]tax return with the IRS, and
- [00:12:43.400]you don't have to worry about digging up
- [00:12:45.180]all your materials and typing in each
- [00:12:47.080]line manually.
- [00:12:47.940]So some important
- [00:12:51.440]dates to keep in mind as we're
- [00:12:53.260]talking about the FAFSA. Number one
- [00:12:55.380]is February 1st. This is a very,
- [00:12:57.340]very important date. So for my
- [00:12:59.420]in-state Nebraska resident
- [00:13:01.500]students, all application
- [00:13:03.540]materials for admission
- [00:13:04.720]need to be in by February
- [00:13:07.480]1st to be considered for scholarships.
- [00:13:09.140]For everyone,
- [00:13:11.040]the supplemental scholarship application
- [00:13:13.180]deadline is also February 1st.
- [00:13:15.580]So if you're looking to
- [00:13:17.480]apply for some of those
- [00:13:19.420]leadership, service,
- [00:13:21.140]or some of your academic department
- [00:13:23.240]scholarships, that would be through
- [00:13:25.300]that supplemental scholarship application.
- [00:13:27.200]Next, I want to highlight
- [00:13:29.440]light May 1st. For my non-resident out-of-state students, this is your application for admission
- [00:13:35.760]and for scholarship consideration deadline. For everyone on the call, this is also the enrollment
- [00:13:42.020]deposit deadline. That's that $250 deposit that secures your spot at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:13:48.140]One of the most common questions we get is, do I need to pay this deposit before I know what I'm
- [00:13:54.000]getting for scholarships or for aid? I want to know and make an informed decision. Well,
- [00:13:59.560]if you file your FAFSA when it opens in December, if you apply for admission by November 1st,
- [00:14:07.240]you will hear about your scholarships and your financial aid by February 12th, and that will
- [00:14:13.180]give you until May 1st to have to pay that deposit to be able to understand your full
- [00:14:18.600]financial aid offer to make an informed decision for your enrollment deposit.
- [00:14:23.480]So take that weight off your shoulders.
- [00:14:25.180]You will have some breathing room.
- [00:14:26.720]Just make sure you meet those priority deadlines.
- [00:14:29.000]Finally, for the FAFSA, the FAFSA form priority deadline when we're talking about need-based aid
- [00:14:35.900]is May 1st.
- [00:14:37.800]So if you do not file it right away before February,
- [00:14:41.320]just make sure keep May in your mind and have it in by that May 1st deadline.
- [00:14:45.680]So after filing that FAFSA, your next big step is for the student,
- [00:14:52.960]you need to monitor your MyRed account and make sure if we are needing
- [00:14:56.780]any other information from you that you submit any additional requested documents
- [00:15:00.860]to us by June 1st to expedite your process.
- [00:15:04.620]Once you are awarded, you will review that financial aid offer in MyRed
- [00:15:09.220]where you can then accept or decline your awards in MyRed
- [00:15:12.660]to secure your financial aid for next year.
- [00:15:15.040]So now I'm going to chat a bit about some of these programs
- [00:15:19.960]that either might require the FAFSA
- [00:15:22.440]or they are very much, they play very well with the FAFSA
- [00:15:27.060]when you are able to combine the funding.
- [00:15:29.260]So number one, this does require the FAFSA.
- [00:15:32.480]This is for our Nebraska resident students,
- [00:15:34.780]the Nebraska Promise.
- [00:15:36.100]This is a program that covers tuition
- [00:15:38.900]up to 15 credits per semester.
- [00:15:40.800]This does not include the cost of housing and food.
- [00:15:43.620]This is just for the tuition cost.
- [00:15:45.460]But this is for students who have family incomes
- [00:15:48.620]of $65,000 or less and,
- [00:15:51.920]or are Pell Grant eligible as determined by the FAFSA.
- [00:15:55.100]Students will automatically be considered
- [00:15:58.260]once they submit their complete application
- [00:16:00.520]and their FAFSA form.
- [00:16:02.260]So one of the common questions we get is that,
- [00:16:04.980]okay, I made like $70,000 last, like in 2023,
- [00:16:09.300]but we are Pell Grant eligible.
- [00:16:11.620]So am I not eligible?
- [00:16:13.320]No, you absolutely are.
- [00:16:15.000]So if you are over that 65,000,
- [00:16:17.300]but you are Pell Grant eligible, great.
- [00:16:20.220]You are still Nebraska Promise,
- [00:16:21.720]as long as you are a Nebraska resident
- [00:16:24.460]and vice versa, of course.
- [00:16:26.500]So just keep in mind
- [00:16:28.320]that in order to be eligible
- [00:16:29.480]for Nebraska Promise,
- [00:16:30.360]you have to file that FAFSA by May 1st.
- [00:16:33.240]For more information,
- [00:16:34.340]I'm sure Kayla put it in the chat already
- [00:16:36.360]because she's quick,
- [00:16:37.200]but you can always learn more
- [00:16:38.700]at go.unl.edu slash promise.
- [00:16:41.120]Another program that does require you
- [00:16:46.000]to file a FAFSA
- [00:16:46.780]is the Nebraska First Responder Pledge.
- [00:16:49.420]This is also for our Nebraska
- [00:16:51.520]resident students.
- [00:16:52.580]This waives in-state tuition
- [00:16:54.700]for Nebraska undergraduate
- [00:16:56.040]first responders
- [00:16:56.880]and their dependent children
- [00:16:58.440]after calculating
- [00:17:00.000]other scholarships and grants.
- [00:17:01.600]If you yourself are the first responder,
- [00:17:04.160]you would have to enroll
- [00:17:06.300]in an eligible major
- [00:17:07.500]based on your career path.
- [00:17:09.500]So if you're a law enforcement,
- [00:17:10.700]firefighter or firefighter paramedic.
- [00:17:12.720]If your child is going
- [00:17:15.500]to be attending UNL
- [00:17:16.580]and you are dependent
- [00:17:17.720]of a first responder,
- [00:17:19.380]you can choose,
- [00:17:21.320]any major you like,
- [00:17:22.420]that is totally fine.
- [00:17:23.740]However, you do have
- [00:17:25.560]to make a commitment
- [00:17:26.300]to stay in Nebraska
- [00:17:27.340]for five years post-graduation.
- [00:17:29.700]This is still an absolutely
- [00:17:31.880]fantastic program.
- [00:17:32.960]If you are dependent
- [00:17:35.060]of a first responder,
- [00:17:36.540]just keep in mind
- [00:17:37.360]that we determine your dependency
- [00:17:39.620]based on the FAFSA.
- [00:17:40.860]So when you file the FAFSA,
- [00:17:42.200]your first responder parent
- [00:17:44.200]must be a parent on that FAFSA.
- [00:17:45.760]So to learn more,
- [00:17:47.380]you want to go to go.unl
- [00:17:49.340]slash first responder.
- [00:17:52.000]Now for my out-of-state students,
- [00:17:54.120]don't think I forgot about you.
- [00:17:55.800]I promise I would never.
- [00:17:56.980]So for those of you that are saying,
- [00:17:59.160]hey, this stinks.
- [00:18:00.500]I'm also dependent of a first responder,
- [00:18:02.600]but I'm an out-of-state student.
- [00:18:04.060]Don't worry.
- [00:18:05.020]We have this for you as well.
- [00:18:06.860]So we also have the
- [00:18:08.060]National First Responder Pledge.
- [00:18:09.580]This waives the undergraduate
- [00:18:11.360]out-of-state portion of tuition,
- [00:18:12.960]providing out-of-state students
- [00:18:14.680]the same net tuition cost
- [00:18:16.280]as Nebraska residents.
- [00:18:17.480]So very similar to our in-state program.
- [00:18:20.920]They have to be a law enforcement officer,
- [00:18:22.500]firefighter, firefighter, paramedic,
- [00:18:24.820]or the dependent of one of those fields.
- [00:18:27.480]And to learn more about this program,
- [00:18:30.300]you have to go to go.unl.edu
- [00:18:32.640]slash first responder
- [00:18:33.920]in the national section.
- [00:18:35.360]Now for my out-of-state students
- [00:18:40.260]who might be military affiliated,
- [00:18:42.200]we also have a program
- [00:18:44.020]that's very similar
- [00:18:44.940]to our National First Responder program.
- [00:18:46.660]It's called the Husker Salute Pledge.
- [00:18:48.520]This waives the out-of-state portion
- [00:18:50.720]of tuition for undergraduate
- [00:18:52.420]first-year military-connected members
- [00:18:54.640]and military spouse or dependents.
- [00:18:57.260]So this includes out-of-state students
- [00:18:59.500]who also might be wanting to join
- [00:19:01.620]our Nebraska ROTC program,
- [00:19:03.640]such as our Army, Navy,
- [00:19:05.040]Marine Corps, or Air Force.
- [00:19:06.700]So if you yourself are military-connected
- [00:19:09.460]and you believe that you might be
- [00:19:11.220]eligible for this Husker Salute Pledge,
- [00:19:13.100]or you've been considering
- [00:19:14.500]joining the Nebraska ROTC,
- [00:19:16.160]definitely go check out this program.
- [00:19:18.180]It's fantastic.
- [00:19:19.220]And also our ROTC
- [00:19:20.860]programs are wonderful.
- [00:19:21.940]We actually have a couple of people
- [00:19:23.580]that work in our office
- [00:19:24.540]that are part of the ROTC programs
- [00:19:26.300]and have received numerous benefits,
- [00:19:28.300]both scholarship as well as personally
- [00:19:30.280]through that program.
- [00:19:31.220]So next I want to talk about
- [00:19:36.180]how you can estimate
- [00:19:37.100]your cost of attendance.
- [00:19:38.160]So as you're going through
- [00:19:40.320]this admission process
- [00:19:41.400]and you're making your college decision,
- [00:19:43.140]one of the greatest tools you have
- [00:19:45.480]is our net price calculator.
- [00:19:47.140]So this calculator,
- [00:19:49.080]not only will it look
- [00:19:50.320]at your academics
- [00:19:52.340]to give you an idea
- [00:19:53.300]of what scholarships
- [00:19:54.120]you could be eligible for,
- [00:19:55.440]but you also can input
- [00:19:56.880]some of your information
- [00:19:57.820]to even get a general estimate
- [00:19:59.980]of what you might be eligible for
- [00:20:01.300]for the FAFSA.
- [00:20:02.100]Of course, this is based
- [00:20:03.720]on prior year data.
- [00:20:05.100]So it is just an estimate.
- [00:20:07.300]So you should definitely go
- [00:20:08.740]through the entire process
- [00:20:09.920]to get your full award in February.
- [00:20:13.520]But this is a great way for you
- [00:20:15.380]in this kind of waiting period
- [00:20:16.780]for December for it to open up
- [00:20:18.340]to kind of get an idea of
- [00:20:20.120]what you might be looking at
- [00:20:21.120]when you come to Nebraska.
- [00:20:22.400]And next, another great tool
- [00:20:26.420]for you to use is us and Husker Hub.
- [00:20:28.420]Like I said before,
- [00:20:29.640]we're integrated services.
- [00:20:30.820]We help with FAFSA forms.
- [00:20:32.760]We help students understand
- [00:20:34.260]their scholarships.
- [00:20:34.900]We go through the different types
- [00:20:37.880]of aid that you could receive.
- [00:20:39.460]And of course, also help you
- [00:20:40.820]with plans for affordability
- [00:20:42.900]in your student bill.
- [00:20:43.800]So we help students
- [00:20:45.980]as their current students,
- [00:20:47.140]but we also are happy to help you now.
- [00:20:48.940]So you can,
- [00:20:49.920]you can come by
- [00:20:50.980]if you would like to
- [00:20:51.880]at Canfield Administration Building.
- [00:20:53.880]You can email us, call us,
- [00:20:55.860]or join our virtual queue
- [00:20:57.360]once you have an NUID
- [00:20:58.660]anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- [00:21:01.220]So I want to highlight
- [00:21:03.720]a few other webinars
- [00:21:04.720]before we jump into
- [00:21:05.800]some specific questions
- [00:21:07.120]about some of these FAFSA questions
- [00:21:09.100]that I'm sure you may have.
- [00:21:10.140]So tomorrow,
- [00:21:11.200]for our non-resident students
- [00:21:13.120]who want to learn a little bit more
- [00:21:14.260]about scholarships,
- [00:21:14.980]we will have an out-of-state
- [00:21:16.780]scholarships webinar
- [00:21:17.740]same time tomorrow
- [00:21:19.720]for you to learn
- [00:21:20.580]a little bit more about that.
- [00:21:21.580]And we also have webinars
- [00:21:24.200]in the spring,
- [00:21:25.120]which I know you're looking
- [00:21:25.920]at these dates and you're like,
- [00:21:26.920]January, February,
- [00:21:28.100]that's so far away.
- [00:21:29.560]But I promise you
- [00:21:30.660]during this season,
- [00:21:32.120]it goes by fast.
- [00:21:33.180]So feel free to take a picture
- [00:21:35.080]of this as well
- [00:21:36.040]for some of our upcoming ideas.
- [00:21:38.440]But the big one
- [00:21:40.120]I want to highlight
- [00:21:40.840]because I'm biased
- [00:21:41.760]because I'm the one who's running it,
- [00:21:42.980]it's interpreting
- [00:21:44.040]your financial aid offer.
- [00:21:45.440]As you know,
- [00:21:46.420]we will be sending out
- [00:21:48.320]that initial aid offer
- [00:21:49.520]February 12th
- [00:21:50.400]if you meet these priority deadlines.
- [00:21:51.860]And so our goal is that
- [00:21:54.660]you will be able to have
- [00:21:56.440]that financial aid offer in hand
- [00:21:58.240]and we can go through this with you
- [00:22:00.660]during this webinar
- [00:22:01.840]so you can understand
- [00:22:02.700]how to use this tool
- [00:22:04.060]to understand your affordability,
- [00:22:05.800]what your out-of-pocket costs might be,
- [00:22:07.580]and just generally understand
- [00:22:09.040]the awards that you've been offered.
- [00:22:10.320]And so with that,
- [00:22:14.440]I'm going to open it up for questions.
- [00:22:16.060]I'm sure that there's a lot
- [00:22:17.220]of specific financial aid questions
- [00:22:18.840]that you have
- [00:22:19.320]and so I will pass it back to Kayla
- [00:22:23.120]to help with the Q&A.
- [00:22:25.060]First and foremost, thank you, Christy.
- [00:22:27.620]Christy does an amazing job
- [00:22:29.700]for the university
- [00:22:30.480]in helping us understand
- [00:22:31.960]all the complexities of federal aid.
- [00:22:34.700]So she is definitely
- [00:22:35.880]the expert of experts.
- [00:22:37.080]As Christy was presenting,
- [00:22:38.920]you all were adding questions
- [00:22:41.120]to the chat and the Q&A.
- [00:22:42.860]So we were definitely answering those
- [00:22:45.180]as we've gone along.
- [00:22:46.640]Real quick question, Christy,
- [00:22:48.440]you want to just came in,
- [00:22:49.120]can you speak a little bit more
- [00:22:50.080]about Pell Grant eligibility?
- [00:22:52.280]What does that look like
- [00:22:53.400]from the federal government side
- [00:22:55.260]to be eligible for a Pell Grant?
- [00:22:57.020]You're muted.
- [00:23:06.740]Got it.
- [00:23:08.620]OK, so Pell Grant eligibility.
- [00:23:11.140]So this year is actually
- [00:23:12.740]a little different.
- [00:23:13.400]So for those of you who may have
- [00:23:14.660]filed a FAFSA in the past,
- [00:23:15.880]there was, you know,
- [00:23:17.280]a certain range of your
- [00:23:18.920]family contribution,
- [00:23:20.040]the old term that you would
- [00:23:21.740]have to fall into to be
- [00:23:23.140]eligible for the Pell Grant.
- [00:23:24.160]It's a little different now.
- [00:23:25.560]It's actually expanded to be
- [00:23:27.600]for a lot more people
- [00:23:29.020]than it used to be.
- [00:23:29.860]So now the term that we're
- [00:23:31.620]talking about is Student Aid
- [00:23:32.980]Index or SAI.
- [00:23:34.500]And so you can be eligible
- [00:23:36.960]just based on falling within
- [00:23:38.440]a certain range of the SAI.
- [00:23:40.020]So that could be anything
- [00:23:41.600]from like negative fifteen
- [00:23:42.780]hundred up through a couple
- [00:23:44.440]thousand of the SAI.
- [00:23:45.720]OK, so it's a it's a pretty
- [00:23:47.240]decent range that you can
- [00:23:48.720]fall into, but not just that.
- [00:23:51.180]If just say that you are
- [00:23:53.760]you meet certain criteria
- [00:23:55.500]based on your family size,
- [00:23:57.300]based on your household income
- [00:23:59.120]and some very complex formulas,
- [00:24:03.140]you can still be eligible
- [00:24:05.280]to be Pell Grant eligible,
- [00:24:06.820]even if just say your SAI
- [00:24:08.640]is above the range
- [00:24:09.860]that you would consider
- [00:24:10.780]normally to be like
- [00:24:12.620]within that need based range.
- [00:24:14.100]So that's why this year
- [00:24:15.540]more than ever we tell people,
- [00:24:17.360]even if you don't
- [00:24:18.520]think that you'd be
- [00:24:19.400]eligible for grants,
- [00:24:20.460]just file the FAFSA.
- [00:24:21.800]They completely overhauled
- [00:24:23.660]this formula.
- [00:24:24.860]And so a lot of people
- [00:24:26.220]who had students
- [00:24:27.580]attend college before,
- [00:24:28.820]they're like, oh,
- [00:24:29.660]we only ever got loans before.
- [00:24:31.200]And then this year,
- [00:24:32.280]like, oh my gosh,
- [00:24:33.060]I got Pell Grant
- [00:24:33.720]because they overhauled
- [00:24:35.220]this formula.
- [00:24:35.760]So I definitely say
- [00:24:37.820]it's worth your time.
- [00:24:38.880]And also the FAFSA
- [00:24:41.720]is based on two years
- [00:24:42.880]prior income, right?
- [00:24:44.240]So even if just say
- [00:24:45.640]you file this year
- [00:24:46.760]and you're like, oh, dang,
- [00:24:47.740]we're not going to get
- [00:24:48.320]a Pell Grant,
- [00:24:48.800]it doesn't mean that
- [00:24:49.980]you won't get it in future years,
- [00:24:51.680]depending on what
- [00:24:52.540]your income looks like
- [00:24:53.700]or even depending on
- [00:24:54.760]how the formula may change
- [00:24:56.060]in the future as well.
- [00:24:56.980]So it's always worth your time.
- [00:24:58.960]Awesome.
- [00:25:03.800]Thank you so much, Christy.
- [00:25:05.200]It looks like we're answering
- [00:25:06.640]the questions that we need
- [00:25:07.960]to answer very efficiently.
- [00:25:10.440]So congratulations
- [00:25:11.540]and thank you to our experts
- [00:25:13.500]on the back end.
- [00:25:14.560]They're just doing an amazing job
- [00:25:16.160]of getting those questions
- [00:25:17.060]answered for us.
- [00:25:18.120]In the chat,
- [00:25:19.200]I am going to put though right now
- [00:25:21.140]a supplemental link.
- [00:25:22.500]I mentioned earlier
- [00:25:23.400]that we are hosting
- [00:25:24.440]some sessions at 730
- [00:25:27.620]with our academic partners
- [00:25:29.060]and our honors program.
- [00:25:30.360]So if you all want to learn
- [00:25:32.080]a little bit more
- [00:25:32.780]about some programs
- [00:25:34.920]here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:25:35.840]how you can really push yourself
- [00:25:37.580]academically by joining
- [00:25:38.940]one of our three
- [00:25:39.760]university honors programs.
- [00:25:41.140]Again, that link is right
- [00:25:42.820]there in the chat.
- [00:25:43.580]You can also find that
- [00:25:45.240]on our visit page,
- [00:25:46.280]admissions.unl.edu
- [00:25:47.920]slash visit.
- [00:25:48.980]We're hosting these sessions
- [00:25:51.280]also tomorrow.
- [00:25:52.320]We're doing an out-of-state
- [00:25:53.520]scholarship webinar tomorrow,
- [00:25:54.620]as Christy mentioned,
- [00:25:55.480]but then we're also hosting
- [00:25:57.020]our college sessions
- [00:25:58.040]again tomorrow.
- [00:25:58.940]So if 730 is too late
- [00:26:00.880]for you right now,
- [00:26:01.680]you can join us tomorrow
- [00:26:02.760]at 730.
- [00:26:03.620]But like I mentioned,
- [00:26:05.100]we'll be ending right here
- [00:26:06.240]at 730 sharp.
- [00:26:07.200]So if you do have a few
- [00:26:08.600]last minute questions,
- [00:26:09.800]feel free to put them
- [00:26:10.960]in the Q&A.
- [00:26:11.700]If you don't have any questions,
- [00:26:13.800]you can definitely
- [00:26:14.680]exit the webinar.
- [00:26:15.660]You don't have to stay
- [00:26:16.580]and watch us
- [00:26:17.720]answer questions
- [00:26:18.640]on a screen.
- [00:26:19.480]But again,
